Ghost and Mr Chicken
« on: July 31, 2010, 10:15:56 PM »
I just watched Ghost and Mr Chicken this evening.  I hadn't watched it in a long time.  It was filmed at Universal Studios.   Was the Old Simmons Place the Norman Bates house?  Not the hotel but the house where Norman's "mother" lived.

Different house.

The MR. CHICKEN house (known as the Allison house) was built in the '40s for the film SO GOES MY LOVE with Don Ameche (as was the Munsters' house). The Allison House has similar characteristics to the PSYCHO house, but it is a different house altogether. Both the Allison house and the Munster house can be seen on the DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES TV show.

"Atta boy, Luther." I believe someone told me the guy who plays Ottis on Andy Griffith does that voice.  Don Knotts is hillarious in this.  "Calm, do murder and calm go together? Calm and murder?"  Not a fan of Andy, but i love this movie.

Here's the Allison house. It was also the Dowd house in "Harvey".

Hal Smith was in the movie (playing a drunk, what else), but the "Atta boy" voice was Everett Greenbaum (sp?), one of the writers.

Not a fan of Andy, but i love this movie.

Andy was an uncredited writer/comedy consultant on "Ghost" (sort of a ghost writer).

ha  ha  ha.  That is so punny.

Bob, I didn't know any of that.  Did any of these houses survive the fire?

The fires didn't burn anything on Colonial Street as far as I know. However, the building you see has been torn up and rebuilt so many times, I doubt little on it is original (maybe the window trim, etc.)

The Munster house is all new and barely resembles its former self.

As it was set for THE MUNSTERS...

One of my favorite photos of the "Munster" house, INSIDE on the soundstage for the filming of SO GOES MY LOVE...

Here is the Allison (HARVEY/MR. CHICKEN) House being built in the mid 1940s...

...and the Munster House being built in the 1940s, again for SO GOES MY LOVE...

Both houses in hundreds of other productions.

I love the pictures, Bob.  I don't like the new Munster house.  It doesn't look anything at all like the original.  The original blueprints must've been lost in the fire, too.   :-[

Actually, as they are sets, the Munster House was remodelled/re-dressed for use on Wisteria Lane, for  "Desparate Housewives". It was not affected by the fire.

You can catch glimpses of the top of the house in the Tom Hanks movie "The 'Burbs".

About two years ago, a couple of Stages and sets, and vaults were ravaged by fire when some newly roofed but not fireproofed material caught fire. Included was the Kongfrontation attraction. Universal replaced the sets and debuted them in June and in July the new Kong attraction. They are selectively replacing lost catalog items and elements on film and tape from movies and TV which were lost. Some things may not be replaced.
