This little bank belongs to a friend of mine and I've never seen one before. Does anyone have any idea of value or rarity? The Kong winds up, climbs the building and drops a coin that was inserted into the back of his head.

He's marked TPS Made in Japan on the bottom. And he's missing his wind up key.

Saw a couple of versions of this on eBay over the last year, and WANTED IT BADLY. But just didn't have the scratch. I'd be interested in the backstory on this too.

I've seen it on ebay, too.  Think it's price varied from like, 30-150 bucks!  Not sure of it's real value - other than that it's cool!!

Thanks, Mark, that's quite a spread. I don't want to overprice it for my other pal, Mark, but I don't want to undersell it either. Hmmm, a dilemma.

I'll bet it was a tourist item either sold in or outside the ESB.   Being only available in NY (I'm guessing) the price tends to be more than similar non Kong banks like the Dracula version etc..   I loved how they use to always incorporate Kong into ESB history.   I don't think they do anymore.

I've seen four or five in person over the years, from MIB fifteen years ago in New York to a loose this past year at a flea market here on the West coast. The one in NY was $25, the seller over here wanted $50 and cited eBay for the price (which raised my eyebrow and didn't persuade me to spend any money with 'em). Who's the manufacturer?

It absolutely looks like a NY souvenir piece. The bottom is marked T.P.S. Made in Japan with a logo featuring a hand holding up three fingers.

These type Kong souvenir items (sold in NYC) started popping right after the 1976 film. I'm sure these were sold elsewhere without the "Welcome to New York" sticker.

If I was selling one, I would auction it on ebay and let 'er fly. $150 is an absurd number, though- I would predict an auction price of closer to $15-$30.

If it was an actual licensed Kong item the price would be higher.   But as a generic Gorilla I Agree it's a $15-$30 toy.

I have been looking for one of these for a while and would give you $30 for it (plus shipping), I have seen a few but most of them do not seem to wind up too well.
