Title: Class of 1970 (+/- 3 yrs)- your favorite tunes from high school/ college
Post by: drzeus on July 14, 2010, 07:47:26 PM
Hi Folks.
Was wondering if anyone (graduating high school around 1970 +/- 3 yrs) would be willing to post their favorite/most memorable/nostalgic songs (and WHY if you'd like) from their high school or college years here.
I graduated in '80 and am DJ'ing a gig for a 1970 class reunion next month. I missed most of the GREAT years.
I have access to all the billboard charts of the day, but they don't necessarily include all geographic regions (I'm in central Ohio) or genres. Your suggestions could help out the show immensely.
Thanks for your help...

Hah! That's easy - One of my performing bands is strictly 60s - psychedelic, Motown, British Invasion etc. Don't forget most 70s grads came into music in the 60s. Also anything from Woodstock. My personal faves from 60 - early 70 are Lovin Spoonful, Young Rascals, Beatles, Allmans, old Zep, Wilson Pickett, Credence...some eclectic stuff would be Love, Music Machine, Runt (definitely "We Gotta Get You A Woman"), Cream, old Moody Blues (Ride My Seesaw), early Steely Dan, definitely James Gang!, Poco, old Grand Funk Railroad,   Sly/Family Stone has a ton of super danceable stuff, geez there's way too many! I hope this helps, I'm sure you'll get a TON of other great suggestions! Easy to google Billboard top ten from any year. Have fun and good luck.
Paul, class of 71.

Thank you packy.
Great suggestions because alot of them wouldn't have come to mind. I probably would've ended up strictly with the charts which can be rather boring. There are hundreds of radio stations now a days that play that stuff.
And I really do hope you're right that I get "Tons" of other suggestions.
If I feel I could have posted this in the "General" forum, I probably would have in hopes of getting more feedback!
Would it be proper or permissible to ask a moderator to move this post?

Thanks again.
Steely Dan Rocks!!

'67-'73?
You're looking at (imo) the greatest years in American Rock & Roll history

Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver, Spirit, Johnny Winter, Big Brother (w/Janis Joplin), Jimi Hendrix,
Jethro Tull, Santana, Pink Floyd, Steppenwolf,
Joe Cocker & Leon Russell (Mad Dogs and Englishmen), Rare Earth &
(of course) Frank Zappa & the Mothers of Invention

are some of my favorites from that time period...
most of it's not particularly danceable, though-

Looking through wiki's 'years in music' might help-

My husband graduated in the 70s and he had lots of Beatles records in his collection when I met him. It seems they were in their Sgt. Pepper Band era when my husband was in school and he liked -  You Never Give Me Your Money and Mean Mr. Mustard.

Three great female vocalists still evoke my memories of the 1970s: Joni, Carly, and Carole.

I remember locking my bedroom door and blasting RAW POWER (Iggy & The Stooges), the first New York Dolls album, and three records by Bowie (Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust, and Aladdin Sane). In college, The Sex Pistols, Clash, Elvis Costello, and The Ramones reigned supreme. Many others, as well, but those were special then.
