Judging by the various tastes in music in the last song thread, there must be some really interesting concerts that have been viewed by members over the years. Let's see some of yours..

It was in the early '90's, & I'm not sure of the line up, but they were great. I've heard of the legendary Tull/Heap tour. Wasn't that the year Tull released Bursting out?

Yessir, it was indeed. It was also the first time I saw Tull. I saw them a total of five times over the years, and enjoyed all the shows from the 70's-80's but when I saw them in 2001 Ian's voice was pretty weak, but Martin's guitar and Ian's flute are still as strong as ever.

I have not been to many shows. None since 93'.
I have seen Sabbath twice,Van Halen, Blue Oyster Cult , Black Oak Arkansas, Metal Church Twice, Trouble , Detective ,Kiss twice , Uriah Heep in 77' ,Exodus , Accept ,Priest twice , Anthrax ,Helloween , Skinny Puppy. Lots of unknown obscure local punk/metal Chicago area bands in the late 80s early 90s.
I used to be a Rebel. Now I'm just a middle class monster loving hermit that cranks 90s death metal pulling into my driveway after work. Gives the neighbors something to think about.

Terry, your list is eerily close to my mine, though I would add a few more hicks and big bands (like Jerry Reed, Willie Nelson, Ray Price, and Buddy Rich, for instance).

BUT, with a lineup like that, I'm a little surprised-no STUNNED...you have never seen The Rev?

Illoman:

Mason Profit was HUGE in my little Iowa hometown back in the early/mid-70's.  Somehow, somebody managed to book them (and Crow) to do a concert at the local high school auditorium.  "Two Hangmen" is still in several local bar's jukeboxes -- or was, last time I was back there.

Man, these are some great sounding concerts!  I didn't get to very many in my younger days, but here are a few I remember, mostly from the past 20 years.

Gordon Lightfoot (four times)
Leon Russell (three times)
Bonnie Koloc (opened for Lightfoot in '77)
John Mellencamp
Jimmy Buffett (twice)
Shirley King (B.B.'s daughter)
Joan Jett (twice)
Steppenwolf (twice)
Aerosmith (twice)
Lynyrd Skynyrd (three times - pre '77 once & post, twice)
Steve Miller Band
Marshall Tucker Band
Little Feat
Charlie Daniels Band (twice - pre christian era & after)
Foghat
Little River Band
Jackyl (lesser known band)
Motley Crue (in '83 or '85)
U2 (with 60,000 other lunatics)
plus, Orleans (remember them?), Gov't. Mule, Los Lobos (twice), The Drifters, The Buckinghams and The McCoys ("Hang On Sloopy")...  and Gary Puckett & The Union Gap, the rehashed recent version of The Byrds, Tom Chapin (Harry's brother), Jerry Reed, Hank Williams Jr., David Allan Coe and The Oak Ridge Boys!
When I was a young'in, my mom & dad would got to this place called Mockingbird Hill Park where I saw country & bluegrass performers like Flatt & Scruggs, Crystal Gayle (yes, I know - she was about 19 then), Buck Owens, etc.

There are probably a few more but I'm done for now.  My wife, daughter & myself are going to see an Irish/American indie band called CEANN this Tuesday night, here in Lafayette at O'Bryan's Nine Irish Brothers Pub & Restaurant.

Oh, and my older sisters saw The Beatles in Indianapolis in 1964.

 Tom Chapin (Harry's brother),

Oh, yeah, I almost forgot: I saw Harry Chapin as well. It was either the year he died or the year before. I remember how riske he was. I thought he was all about Cats in the Cradle, but he told some pretty bawdy stories as well. It was a great concert. he died way too young.

Wow, that's bizarre. People have spent more time in jail for holding certain herbal remedies.  :(
At any rate, the W,B & L show at Georgia Tech was good. They even did a few Cream tunes. Edgar Winter opened for them. Oh, I just remembered: This was in the indoor stadium at Tech and most of the audience, including me, sat on the floor of the basketball court. Prior to the concert a number of frisbees began sailing through the air. At one point I looked up just in time to see a disc (which had apparently been launched from afar) about a foot from my head. A microsecond was not enough time to react, so it beaned me. A pretty hefty hit from a pluto platter!

Oh, I forgot the first Atlanta Pop Festival. It predated Woodstock by a couple of months (I remember someone on the public address system announcing the Woodstock event and listing some of the performers). The Atlanta festival was held at the Atlanta Raceway. The list was extensive, including Led Zeppelin. For most of the event I was pretty far from the stage. On one of the evenings I decided to see how close I could get. So I walked along the edge of the fenced-in area and ended up right next to the stage. A blues band (I think Pacific Gas and Electric) was playing.
Then Janis Joplin took the stage; ironic 'cause I wasn't really a fan. She was dressed in purple satin with lots of necklaces. After every tune she walked over to the side of the stage (near where I had planted myself) and took a big swig off a bottle of JD.
Another close encounter was Siouxsie and the Banshees at the 688 Club. It was a small venue, and I was literally about five feet from the stage (and the "stage" was only about two feet tall). They were in their prime, playing the Juju album in late October. Siouxsie looked fantastic, dressed in black and orange. Wow.

I would have loved to see some of those acts back then, dlhenderson.  We had the International Pop Festival here, which was along those lines too, but I was too young to go.

This was the lineup:

B.B.King, Canned Heat, Chicago, Delaney & Bonnie & Friends,
Freddie King, Grand Funk Railroad, Herbie Mann,
Incredible String Band, James Cotton Blues Band, Janis Joplin,
Johnny Winter, Led Zeppelin, Nazz, The Quarry, Rotary Connection,
Sam & Dave, Santana, Shiva's Headband, Sly & the Family Stone,
Space Opera, Spirit, Sweetwater, Ten Years After and Tony Joe White

Some of those festivals in the late 60's or early 70's were amazing.  The guitar player in my old band was quite a bit older than me and he went to it.  He also saw Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band in the 60's, and tons of other stuff.  I would have eaten all that up.  Did catch that Siouxsie Juju tour in Dallas at the Hot Klub.  I took a few pics but they didn't come out well.  I should scan them anyway.

Oh, yeah, scan those Sioux pix!
They were very touchy about photographs. I remember at another Banshees concert (in a larger venue), Siouxsie actually took a camera away from someone close to the stage, saying: "Let me see that", and away it went!
Your list is damn impressive, Toy Ranch.
What was (or is) the name (or names) of your band (or bands)?

I did some photoshopping and got them a little better than the prints.  The prints are all bright orange, because of the lights they used.

I played in a band called Stick Men With Ray Guns.  We never toured on account of having insane people in the band.  It took 3 vehicles to get us to Austin, lol.  That went for 8 years.  Also played in a band called Graceland, which is actually reforming and we should be playing again soon.

Thanks for posting those great Siouxsie pics, TR.
Here's a handy method of image correction (if you don't already know it): In Photoshop, try shift/command/L (on a Mac) or "auto adjust" from the pull down menu under image (not sure what the PC shortcut is).
It often does wonders. I tried it on a couple of your shots, masking the spotlights to nudge the contrast. It got rid of the pink and brought out the blue and black. Worked pretty well. Cheers!

As a mom of a son who went thru the Wiggles phase..those seats are mighty impressive! And they put on a great show! But just think..this will open the door to better concerts for the kids as they get older. My kid went to his first rock concert at 6 years old. he is now (at 9) a veteran of the all-day music festivals. He makes me soo proud!

Hahaha!!  Yeah, well I think we saw Greg's last performance on stage or at least his last tour.  He had/ has some type of illness that is vertigo-like from what I understand and he was really struggling on stage.  He performed valiantly, though-----I can't believe I'm saying this about 'Greg Wiggle'.... but I was more than impressed with his heart and professionalism.  He has since given his spot on stage away to a replacement.  My 5 year old is now past the Wiggles for the most part, but my 15 month old is just getting warmed up!  Both of my girls like stage performances with music, so maybe they'll be like your son in that regard.

     Thanks for the response, Marsha!

I would be a liar if i didn't say I was disappointed with the recent KISS concert. Paul Stanley has lost it. His voice is fried. Paul has always been the strongest member of KISS, but this time around I felt he was the weakest. His shtick was tired and repetitive. How many times can you say the word "Minneapolis" in a concert? And suprisingly enough, his voice was strained and weak. This was never the case in previous years. You could always depend on Paul to deliver the goods in rock star like fashion. But this time around, he seemed like a parody of himself. And a bad one at that. Most surprisingly was just how strong Gene Simmons was. He truly carried the whole performance. His voice was in top form and he still had all his trademark moves down pat. Eric Singer was adequate as was Tommy Thayer. Tommy is no Ace though.

This was my last KISS concert ever. I made that decision half way through the show. A fan needs to know when it's time to retire just as much as the band does.

You know, I feel the same way about Jethro Tull, one of my all time favorite bands, who I've seen five times in concert. Ian Anderson's voice is shot, he doesn't do his patented flute solos any more, and I really don't like any of their material post 1980. I saw them in 2001 and decided that was the last time. Hearing Ian's voice in this shape is just too disturbing, knowing what it once was.

I recently saw the band UFO in concert and was totally blown away on just how well they sounded. They rocked as if it was still 1978! Phil Mogg was on! Vinnie Morre almost made you forget about Micheal Schenker. Highly recommended! Same age and same era, and still they made KISS look like punks.

Well, the only "older" band I still enjoy seeing live is King Crimson. They continue to reinvent themselves, and it's always a treat to hear Adrian Belew and Robert Fripp assault your senses with their unique brand of guitar abuse.

The Carpenters twice, John Denver, the people that sang Afternoon Delight (they were the warm-up band for John Denver), Beach Boys, Bugs Bunny Symphony (I can't remember the name of it).  They were all really good, especially the Bugs Bunny Symphony.

The Bugs Bunny thing showed the Bugs Bunny classical music as written for the cartoons, then how the real music sounded.  They also showed the same cartoon.  Of course the Rabbit of Seville was in there.  Excellent!  It was a great way of introducing classical music to kids.  I think nowadays kids don't easily get to see Bugs Bunny.  They probably don't even know who he is.   :'(   Zombie Censored   Zombie Mad  Zombie No Smile  >:(

The band you were referring to was Starland Vocal Band. (I have a head for useless knowledge.)

I would have *loved* to have seen that Bugs Bunny show!! Carl Stalling did some stellar arrangements for those cartoons.

Hi Iloman!
That's right, the Starland Vocal Band.  I forgot!  That Bugs Bunny Concert was really good.  They had a full symphony orchestra.  Carl Stalling was definitely great.  He really must've known classical music to be able to use them in the cartoons.  He must have been a genious.

Baron, when and where did you see Harry Chapin? I saw him at memorial Hall in downtown Dayton in 1979 I believe. What a great concert! I had only known him for Cats in the Cradle, and my then-girlfriend wanted to see him. He told lots of bawdy tales and his band was great!!

I saw John Michael Talbot in 1986. His concert was so peaceful I literally thought I could hear my heart beating!! I was concerned it's sound would disrupt the show!! Certainly a unique experience for a concert!

A few more I can't remember. Several small shows whilst drunk at the Metro in Chicago.

Julie Driscoll, Brian Auger and the Trinity
Ray Charles
Elvis Presley
Janis Joplin
Miles Davis
The J. Geils Band (3 times, the 1st time they were still known as The J. Geils Blues Band)
Livingston Taylor
Ran Blake
Van Morrison
Nadja Solerno-Sonnenberg
David Bowie
probably a few more I'm forgetting

I didn't have an opportunity to see Bowie in the '70s, but caught the "Serious Moonlight" tour in '82 and another the "Glass Spider" Tour ion '87. Both were very good although the latter got pretty mixed reviews. I think I liked it more than Bowie himself did.

Here's a review I did of a Tegan & Sara concert at Massey Hall in 2010:

My first exposure to Tegan & Sara was through the purchase of Little Steven's "Halloween A-Go-Go" CD.

The "Walking with a Ghost" track by Tegan & Sara proved to be one of the highlights from the CD.

So when I learned in November that Tegan & Sara were going to play fabled old Massey Hall on Wednesday, January 20th, I resolved to be there. Massey Hall was built in downtown Toronto to accomodate the Toronto Symphony Orchestra in 1892, comfortably seats 2753 concert goers and has splendid acoustics. As such it is absolutely the ideal venue for a concert, particularly in winter!

It's interesting to note that the Cream played Massey Hall in 1968 when ticket prices would have been not much more than $5.00. Just imagine seeing the Cream at their best in such an intimate venue!

Tegan and Sara are identical twin sisters who were born and raised in Calgary but Tegan now lives in Vancouver and Sara in Montreal, although Sara may winter in Vancouver. (I'd spank her ass for being such a wimp if that's the case.) They drew a full house for their concert that night although they were also scheduled to play in the dreadful Kool Haus venue the next day. I'd estimate that about half of the attendees had journeyed from the Isle of Lesbos to see the pair. The other half looked to have more catholic tastes in that regard.

The opening act was An Horse, an Aussie combo very much like the White Stripes consisting of a fellow on drums and a girl with a guitar handing the lead vocals. They politely thanked the assembled multitude for having shown up early enough to take in their show and mentioned that they'd also be making a guest appearance and playing a few songs at Criminal Records on Queen Street West the following evening. I'd characterize their sound as folk rock or light rock and they were pleasant enough.

Tegan and Sara came out to warm applause. Sara is the slighter one. The two girls alternated handling lead vocals depending upon the song. Each girl also had one of those collapsible Hammond(?) organs set up in front of her, and each switched back and forth from an acoustic guitar to an electric guitar to the organ depending on the song they were playing. They were backed by three fellows, a drummer, a guitarist and a bass player. Both the guitarist and the bass player also had collapsible organs set up in front of them which they played when required. In fact, on the second song all four non-percussionists were playing the organ!

The first five songs they played were evidently new ones. After the fifth, Sara thanked the crowd for being patient enough to listen to their new material - and then attacked her acoustic guitar so vigorously that she threw it out of tune within a bar or two! She stopped, laughed, tuned up and launched again into "Walking with a Ghost" which is probably their biggest crowd pleaser. Sara's voice sounds particularly childlike in this number. Her sister has a somewhat deeper voice.

The two girls carried on a steady banter with the crowd. They chatted about things such as playing coffee houses in front of a few of their friends for just the free coffee and tea (Tegan said she doesn't even drink coffee) while growing up in Calgary, going out on a double date at the age of eight with boys that looked just like they did, how tough it was to be a lesbian in high school but tougher yet at the age of eight, and being on their periods that night. The crowd ate it up. My companion observed that they'd be good as hosts of a variety show.

They came out for a five song encore, by themselves for the first three songs before being joined by the three fellows for the last two. All in all, they played for just over two hours and the crowd left well pleased having gotten their money's worth.

I was never much into the live music scene so will come off as a total flyweight amongst you seasoned concert goers. The shows I can remember attending are
The Tubes, Blondie, X, Three Dog Night, Blood Sweat & Tears, Boston, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Metallica, Kenny Loggins, The Fifth Dimension, The Beach Boys,
The Temptations, and a few jazz acts like Manhattan Transfer and Return to Forever. I think that's it.
