Title: What Horror Board Games Have You Owned?
Post by: The Creeper on May 04, 2009, 10:49:56 PM
When I was a kid I had some cool horror type games I wish I still had, and they were:
Jaws
Superstition
I Vant To Bite Your Finger
Bigfoot
Disney's Haunted Mansion
Which Witch
Beware The Spider
Dungeon ( a D&D board game)

More recent ones I still own are:
Atmosphere
Atmosphere3

Maybe not Horror, but:

Escape From New York.

One of my favorite movies of all time (big fan of Carpenter's movies), Snake Plissken was the man when I was 9 years old (he still is). I remember the crazies creeped me out back then, so there's the Horror!

I also had a game called Ghosts.

Off of the top of my head I can't remember any games from my younger days (for now anyway).  Now I have the Hangman with Vincent Price on the box and the King Kong cartoon game.  I have the Wolf Man game, but the box ix in rough shape.  When I get a chance and check to see what else I have boxed up.  I know that there's a bunch that I WANT, but isn't that always the case?

Ah...I did trade some stuff for a Haunted Mansion board game once, it was really gorgeous.    Way back, I had a Creature Features game, gorgeous, now that was a beautiful thing, and a Shrieks and Creaks, which always amused me with the tape cassette and the "talking tombstone"...

I didnt really play it, I used to get them for the artwork and the stories but D&D had a campaign called Ravenloft which revolved around horror and monsters, cool stuff.

i remember having this jaws thing where you had to pluck items from a shark's mouth before it snapped shut. other than the regular board games, i honestly can't remember the others. i enjoyed making my own games up based around fantasy and a little horror thrown in for good measure. i've seen some here that blows me away.

Of course we had the good old Ouiji board.  I had Kabola also.  I don't remember how it was spelled.  It was really cool!  It had this giant plastic thing that you put Tarot cards in all around the plastic thing.  You put a marble in this slot and you put your hand on either end of the plastic thing.  Then It worked like a Ouiji board.  There might have been letters and numbers on it by the cards.  In the middle and set above the plastic thing was this giant eyeball that was weighted such that the eye would follow the marble.  100% cool!

Hi Artistguy!
I loved that great big eye, too.  That totally made the game.  The bottom part of mine was the same color as the iris of the eye.  The bottom part of this one is a much darker green.

I really like that Voodoo game!
Chatty, just about a year ago i picked up Kabala in an antique store for the grand sum of $11.00! It did not have the cards, but it did have the box. I really like those Trans O Gram glow games - I've also got Green Ghost Game.
Thanks to our buddy Harry Hammock I now have a COMPLETE Barnabas Collins Game!
As a kid I had the Hasbro Frankenstein game as well as the large Frankenstein taerget game - the one with the styrofoam balls.
I've picked up a number of monster related games over the years -  I really like the large graphics. The cover of Milton Bradley's GHOSTS is one of the nicest - a very evocative painting.

I had a really cool KING KONG game from the 60's (not the cartoon version).  It included a Kong cardboard figure whose "footprints" were his spaces.  The other players had their own spaces and had to avoid crossing the big ape's path.  Wow, hadn't thought of that in years.  I'll have to track down an image somewhere.

Wow, finally someone besides me who remembers that Jaws game! Most people I ask about that have no idea what I'm talking about. (Granted, I don't think I ever brought it up here....)

Others I had as a kid were Green Ghost (which I nabbed at an old flea market. I've got the Marx version now) and Monster Mansion. I found a couple of the faces from Monster Mansion at an antique store about a year or so ago and they jogged my memory something fierce. I couldn't remember what they were from for the life of me though and I wasn't gonna pay the $20 each the guy was asking for them either. Glad I didn't since it seems the game isn't that hard to come by or expensive.

Not strictly horror, but one game I had and loved as a kid was the Krull board game. Hey, it's got monsters...

Now, besides the Green Ghost, all I have is the Takara Horror World game, a Tomy "Ghost Ban Ban" (?) monster/yokai game, the Japanese Mech Dracula Coffin Game, the previously mentioned Vampire Game and "The Monster Game".  Oh and the Spanish "Franki" game.

I think if I could have one game that I don't have, I'd want the Karloff game.

I though Ka Bala was just the coolest game.  Much better than a Ouiji board.  I've always loved anything glow in the dark.  I'm reading a book about Marie Curie.  It talks about glow in the dark things.  How cool to have an explanation also!

I've never seen Green Ghost.  I don't remember it.

Your head didn't spin around spitting pea soup like in 'The Exorcist' did it Laura?  I vaguely remember the commercials for the Ka Bola game, and thought how cool that game looked.  Bet it was loads of fun, wish I had had one.  I had a Ouija board, which Mom threw out after reading the true story behind the Exorcist.  I also had a 'Planet of the Apes' board game.  I might try to track down one of those Ka Bola games somewhere.

My sister & I had The Planet of the Apes game. The game pieces were humans, & you took your chances falling into the apes' cage. The box art had a cool family portrait from Battle for the POTA.
I also recall an Addams Family game. True to the spirit of the Addams, the "winner" was the last player to make it around the board. The box art was inspired by original Addams drawings, or the HB cartoon series.

The Hasbro aka Hassenfeld Brothers Mystery games included:

Frankenstein
Dracula
Wolf Man
Creature
Mummy
Phantom of the Opera

There are a couple fantasy versions out there including Bride of Frankenstein and Dr. Jeckyl and Mr. Hyde.  I own Frank, Drac, Wolf Man and the Bride games.  Creature is the most valuable followed by the tough to find Phantom and Mummy games.

Thanks Dracfan!  My stuff is all boxed up and buried in my basement and crawlspace (dry thankfully) as I finish my basement.  It's been a few years since I've seen most  of what I have and so I'm afraid the pics couldn't be part of the equation.  Hopefully soon!

Weeeeeeell--I used the search engine rather than start a new thread. Some folks (on other boards I visit---not here) gripe if you start a new thread when one already exists. Others gripe if you dig an old one up ("necroposting). Cant please everybody...it was a 50/50 shot. 8). But i am glad I did because I saw some neat games. Tell me this: does it not seem that Bama's Aurora art more or less was the template for every other company's designs? Those games look an awful lot like the Aurora boxes, lol.

Plus there were Godzilla and King Kong board games made by Ideal.

I'll tell you precisely that. It was James Bama's Aurora box art that set the template for the look the Universal monsters have had ever since he did those box designs. And that's a very good thing!

Here are some pics of my Hasbro Board games, including a fantasy game of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde I made. The Phantom game is my favorite in the series. I have the Creature game too (not pictured), but have yet to locate a Mummy one. If you have one for sale, or know someone who does, please contact me.

I had the Green Ghost Game.  Loved being able to play a game in the dark!  When I got married, turned out my wife to be also had that game as a kid and she came with it.  Also had Bats in the Belfry.  I remember the Addams Familay card game.  Also had a Hitchcock one that was a lot like Clue?  Later on, I picked up Dungeon.  Loved playing that one as well as Cosmic Encounter.  Not sure if it qualifies but also got into Thieve's World which was RPG and Sanctuary which was a board game.  Still remember one card that went "Bet Stefan he can't do a sleep spell.  Lose 1 turn."

BTW, www.boardgamegeek.com (http://www.boardgamegeek.com) is a great resource site for old games.

And, if you change the search parameter to "Artist" and plug in "Chris White" you can see some of the games I did art for back in the '80s and '90s...

Hi, everyone! Really been enjoying reading this thread. With the mentions of Ideal's "The Game of Jaws," I felt it necessary to toss out a bit of news. Well, maybe news. Anyway, I dined at a Cracker Barrel recently (in Georgia, I think) and they had the Jaws game there for sale in the general store section. Not in the original licensed packaging, and not named Jaws, but it was the exact same game! Same mold for the shark, same pieces.

I realize this might not be of interest to the collector, but perhaps if someone was interested in playing it, one wouldn't have to shell out for the original.

Just a little tidbit for (I hope) new friends!

Thanks Hep...This is in my little backyard studio where i teach guitar. I love surrounding myself with eye candy from my childhood. Gives me something interesting to look at while a student sits there struggling to learn how to hold down a barre chord! Also get a kick out of when a parent comes in for the first time and sees all the stuff i have out there...they instantly revert back to being a kid with comments like ;''COOL...I used to have that when i was a kid!!'' or ''Is this stuff for sale??'

I won a I Vant to Bite Your Finger game for 20.77 shipped, but it never showed up.  The guy didn't have a tracking number but refunded my money.  Wish I had the game though, I was so excited thinking I finally got one of my childhood games at a reasonable price.

I had this game i had to sell when my family was in need and it had 2 kids on the box and it had a spider on it. I wanna say it was from the 60's or 70's but it had great graphics and it was kinda like operation only a spider flew at you. i wanna say it was called the spider's web or spider mountain. SOmething like that.

from the internet of the insides. That's cool you still have them, too bad you don't have the whole thing. Those games will cost you a lot more nowadays.

We still have Nightmare and 13 Dead End Drive. I used to have so much more...

I remember playing that Seance game at a friends. Very cool game. My sister had a Haunted House game, but I don't remember much about it. I don't know what happened to it.

I also had King Kong "Twin Towers" game as well. The game board was the World Trade Centers.

I did just find my old Ideal The Monster game and some of the King Kong game at my Dads house. Thought long gone, I found the box, the slab he lays on, most of the plastic monster parts, but no head! Most of the cardboard monster parts and some game cards. I am hoping I have more of the game parts somewhere in my hoarders nightmare of a basement. If not, I will just offer it up on here to someone needing parts to finish off their game.

So, to give credit where its due: it was DraculaFan who posted the box art of the Frankenstein Mystery Game, then MJAYCox who posted a photo of several of the Mystery Games. thanks, Monolith aka Don for identifying that my scan is actually the left side of the board's spinner.

Saving a search for it on eBay is about the best way to find anything. When one is listed you get an email. Make sure you have the title spelled correctly, and if you are unsure just leave several saved searches, one for each possibility. Simple Google search may turn one up.

My son has The Addams Family game from the movie and Green Ghost and Are You Afraid Of The Dark.  All fun games. A friend of mine had The Land Of The Giants game. That was a really good one. Just managed to get a hold of The Monster Game myself! I had it as a kid and was literally on ebay trying to remember what the game was, and there it was, finishing in a couple of hours! Now I have it and cant wait to play it again, this time with my daughter, but there aren't any instructions and all I can remember is that you had to get all the cardboard pieces before you could crank the body, but I can't remember what the vampire cards do, or the formula. so it's just a lot of cranking at the moment.  If you could post up the instructions, if you have them, It would be so very appreciated by my 7 year old self trying to re-emerge for a couple of hours!

My daughter loves it, but would love to play it properly with her. If anyone knows how to play it, or even has a copy of the ibstuctions that would be absolutely amazing!!!

I bought that same "Dark Shadows" game a few years back at an LA comicbook con, and I still have it.  The only pieces that were missing were the vampire teeth, but to play it with my daughter (when she was seven) it was easy enough to use those cheap plastic vampire teeth you could find at a novelty shop.

Yes.

I haven't played it, I mainly just bought it for the figures, graphics, and because I'm a Hammer nut. It does look like a fun game to actually play, as well as collect as monster eye candy.  ;)

here is a link above to a monster themed board game article that has dozens of old monster games that you may remember.

I have quite a few monster themed games myself now that I think about it,
the real Ghostbusters
Ghostbusters board game (newer)
escape from frankenstein
revenge of dracula
vampire hunter
witch mountain
popomatic Yipes!
Ghosts!
Haunted mansion Life
ghost castle
haunted house
which witch
triple flips monster series
dungeon of doom
It's the great pumpkin charlie brown
cthulhu munchkin card game
Werewolf card game
salem witch card game
not a board game, but a pencil and paper game: Ravenloft AD&D2nd edition campaign, accessories and adventures, it's Dungeons and dragons set in a gothic horror world with vampires, werewolves, ghosts and so forth as the main creature enemies.
I have a whole bunch of monster or Halloween themed puzzles.

They're not common but they can occasionally be found in places such as Ebay or Hake's and Heritage auctions.

When I decided to expand my collecting efforts to board games and lunch boxes circa 2005, I knew I'd have to use a rifle shot approach or else display space would quickly become a very real problem given the size of these items. I wanted to avoid the Rick Polizzi scenario. He started collecting board games after stumbling upon one in a thrift shop in the late eighties that he'd had as a kid. By late 1990 his collection had grown to over 400 board games:

Evidently his collection would continue to grow to well over 1500!

I therefore decided to limit my purchasing to only those board games which looked like they could be new old stock. Still I succeeded in finding some on delightful themes/subjects!

I still have my original Dungeon! game from the mid '70s. Here's a net pic:

My cousins and I played it so much that I hand drew new levels with new cards for monsters and treasures. I also made up several new characters with new rules pertaining to them. I still have all of that extra junk in a big portfolio case in the basement. That was a precursor to fantasy and superhero roleplaying games for me. Later on I played The Fantasy Trip by Steve Jackson for a few years and finally graduated to Champions and Fantasy Hero from Hero Games which I played nearly every weekend for a couple of decades. I remember sending off for a trial issue of a gaming magazine from TSR after buying Dungeon! and they sent me Dragon #1. Haven't gamed for around 10 years, but I did for most of my life. Now I get my gaming fix playing Skyrim occasionally, but no computer game is as much fun as getting together with your friends over a tabletop RPG for several hours.

Where or how did you assemble the group of people with whom you played? Ardent gamers aren't everywhere.

I met most of them through comic book collecting, one at a flea market vendor's booth buying comics, and the rest were people we met through a local comic book/gaming store that went out of business in the '90s. It would usually just be 4 or 5 of us core gamers but occasionally 2 or 3 more would show up for a few hours. We discouraged more than around 6 gamers at a time because it gets too distracting with too many players and kills the fun of the actual game.

One fellow I met in the Army gamed with us in TN for a few years before moving back home to Atlanta. When I was stationed in Egypt for a year I got a group of 4-5 people interested in Champions and we gamed religiously in the barracks every weekend until I came home. It beat going into Tel Aviv getting drunk and maybe getting blowed up by some terrorist's bomb. I also saved some pretty good money that way.

Just post net pics! That's what I usually do since it's quite a bit of trouble to post pics here. You can usually find some pretty good images with a Google search and just hot-link to 'em. I usually try to use pics from Pinterest or a blog because some of them unlink quickly from some sources. Since we have 24 hours to modify our posts I usually replace the pic if it fades.

I've owned a few monster games but never played any of them.  They were acquired in my adult, collecting years.  None of these games existed in the 1950's when I was a kid.

This Escape From Frankenstein game was produced by the U.K. company Waddington in 1983.  I believe the point was to get completely around the board with a key and lock the monster inside the laboratory.

In 1991 two Escape From Frankenstein board games were released.  The one in the U.S was issued by Pressman and the one in the U.K. was made by Peter Pan Playthings.  Essentially the same game, players tried to circle the board before the 6-piece monster could be completely assembled and catch them.

The U.S. version:

Both versions of the game used the same board.

The  U.K. version:

Although both games used identical boards, the game pieces differed.  The U.S. version is the darker green.  The U.K. version looks a little slimmer in his belted coat and wields a torch.  Here they are side-by-side:

I sure like the more menacing monster graphics of the U.K. game:

Even the two kids running away look cooler.

Isn't that the truth? I adore the design of this game and it hits a sweet spot for me nostalgia wise as it was out in 1980, but what a clunker in terms of entertainment. I opened mine, played it a bit just once, and then kept it for collection. Right around the same time I talked my parents into getting the  Aladdin Universal's Movie Monsters lunchbox for me, swearing to my mom I would use it for school lunch, only to promptly keep it hidden any time it's use was called for. My dad understood.  :D

Back in the day, I was tagging along one afternoon as my Mom was running some errands. She decided that we would drop by a local toy store. She spied "Alfred Hitchcock's WHY?" game and picked it up. Then she looked down at me and asked me if I wanted it (!?). I still have the game board and some of the pieces...

I also picked up an Escape From Frankenstein game at this same show last year.

I've seen some collectors frame theirs - when all the cards and pieces are lost or damaged.

Makes a nice wall hanging.

Here are three extremely comprehensive books on board games by super collector Desi Scarpone:

The purple one at the bottom is more commonly found with a green jacket and is merely the revised Edition of the top blue book. I have the top two books and they are indeed drool worthy.

Here are a couple of pictures from Scarpone's collection of over 6000 board games:
