I got the last one shut down, and for that I apologize. It's important to keep the conversation (and ourselves) alive. Let's try this again, no politics).
-
All schools, restaurants, bars, theaters, entertainment industries are closed. Guidance from the state said no gatherings over 50. Fed says 10. I'm sure we will update, if not have a curfew soon.
-
Even strip clubs are closed, which is horrifying in itself.
-
It's frightening. Where I was worried that the dozens infected in New Rochelle just north of New York City would quickly become several hundred in the state within a week, the current count of 950 is way beyond what I feared. I was expecting cases in Florida to mushroom from under ten and they now stand at 137, but I was stunned to see cases in Louisiana jump from a couple just over a week ago to 114 right now. Even states such as Michigan and Ohio where there were zero cases less than a week ago now have 53 and 50 cases respectively.
And I thought Italy's total was shockingly high when it got to over 5000 just over a week ago on March 7th. Well the case count in Italy has now jumped by over 7087 in the last two days alone and hospitals can't even cope with the critical! Evidently when the first case was encountered in Italy on February 17th, the young fellow wasn't taken seriously and was repeatedly dismissed from the hospital as opposed to being put in isolation. They somehow didn't think a disease erupting in "far off" China could appear in Italy....
Here's where I'm getting my numbers:
Worldwide Infections - Worldometers (https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/)
U.S. Infections - NY Times (https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/us/coronavirus-us-cases.html)
People now need to change their everyday behaviour. It's gone past avoiding planes. We're now getting full-fledged community transmission.
:(

The customers were complaining about having to get their lap dances from six feet away.
Never understood lap dances, myself. Seems to make as much sense as a starving man rolling around in a seven-course meal he is not allowed to consume.

I’m guessing 2020's school year is over. No prom, no nothin'.
I feel sorry for the two girls I babysit 3 times a week. One is 5 and the other turns 12 in a couple days. (Kindergarten and 6th grade.)
The little one loves school and her teacher SO much. She is already crying. When it sinks in that she won't get to have a whole first year, she will be truly crushed.
This is also the year the older one's class was supposed to go to summer camp and she was all excited about that. She got a Polaroid-style camera for her birthday and now she can’t go anywhere to take pictures and have all the memories the older people in her life have been telling her about.
They are both so disappointed.
This may seem like small potatoes in the grand scheme of things to most of us, but this is big stuff in their little lives. I hope they don't get sick on top of everything else. (The 6th grader has asthma and has always been a little fragile.)
Life expectancy for men is 76. I'm already 73. I wouldn't be any great loss. (Don't understand how I made it this far.) But, man I want to keep these kids safe.
All the more frustrating to know there is no treatment for the disease - just the symptoms. That leaves us with two choices: avoid getting it - or, avoiding giving what you have to anyone else, while you wait to see if your body is strong enough to fight it off.
Good luck, everybody.
(Time for me to go spread sunshine among the other people who's lives I touch.)
-

The still make those? Or any film cameras?
-
The still make those? Or any film cameras?
Yep. The one she got has "Intel" on the side. It spits out, thick, wallet-sized prints that slowly develop before your eyes.
Evidently the cameras are like buying home printers. They are really cheap, but the film is really expensive - like a dollar a snap.
Not a practical gift for an 11-year-old with no job. I'm sure it will wind up collecting dust on a closet shelf just like the bulky old Polaroid-Land cameras of Christmases past.
-
I watched The Last Man on Earth, I Am Legend and Outbreak last week just to get me mentally ready for the oncoming Apocalypse. Anyone trying to come after my monster collection needs to simply know, "I'll give you my monsters when you pry them from my cold, dead hands."

I’ve been thinking about how reality plays out so differently from science fiction.
I love sci-fi movies with deserted cities caused by nuclear disasters or major plagues that wipe out everyone but an overpaid star, acting distraught over being left alone - with nary a rotting corpse to befoul his private air supply.
I like to imagine myself being the last guy and not being all that upset by the prospect of not having to share the world with anyone else. I mean, I would be met with a world of plenty. Store shelves would be stocked to bursting with all good things for my sole pleasure.
With no other human to fear, I could move into any house I wanted and decorate it with the whole world’s pickings - including any museum pieces that struck my fancy.
In reality, the still in-place and operating government has ordered all its own citizens to abandoned all public places and imprison themselves in their own homes. They have complied.
And just the anticipation of an impending plague has caused physically contentious Black Friday-type shopping frenzies that have stripped all the stores of toilet paper and SPAM.
So my reality is that, should I risk arrest by sneaking out, I would not be able to move about without suspicious eyes of well-armed denizens peering out from behind the drapes and blinds of nearly every window. And helping myself to things I can’t afford from unattended shops would probably get me shot for looting.
I liked the fiction version better.

Wow, my thoughts exactly. I mean EXACTLY.

They are closing down the big 3 Detroit auto makers.
Any time Americans agree to stop making money it MUST be serious.
I'm feelin' kinda guilty. I'm retired and I never go anywhere, anyway. I'm not feeling this personally at all. My freezer is stocked, I have rice, beans, pasta and plenty of canned goods for several months. Our tap water is just fine, etc.
How are you guys doing? Anyone here laid off, missing classes, whatever? Having difficulty finding anything you really NEED in the stores?
-
I'm in the same boat you're in, Adam. Yes, I do feel some guilt.
-
I was lucky enough to have retired at the end of February, so my situation is ok right now. I feel for everyone else who is getting hit really hard over this. Sending best thoughts, wishes and prayers for all. I am grateful for our board and community of monster lovers here.
-
Yeah, no hardships here. I can't imagine the stores running completely of everything edible. I can just drive up to WM and they will stuff food in my trunk.
The Government is just going to have to step up and take care of people who have been put out of a job!
-
I just lost one of my part time jobs. My regular job is now reaching info the "iffy" zone, and my wife's job is starting to feel the effects. So, it sucks.
-
I just lost one of my part time jobs.
That sucks, Anton. Hope you get some of that Government money!
-
Went to the store last night to pick up a prescription. The shelves were empty. The meat department was empty. There was NOTHING except for some bread they were putting out (Thank goodness!), cookies, chips, and soda (and some dairy). Everything else was gone. Never seen anything like it. Once this starts hitting areas with factories and such harder, I can imagine this will be a running theme throughout the country over the next 18 months.
-
They are already talking about not having enough workers to harvest crops, process the resulting food, etc. Looks like there might me a lot of waste in the fields.
There is also talk about gasoline going to an average of $1.50 a gallon - maybe as low as .99 in a handful of stations. Too bad nobody can go anywhere.
When I say "talk", I mean mainstream Internet articles from major newspapers with reporter bylines - not unidentified sources.

Iceland has instituted a 100% Testing Policy. They are testing everyone, whether or not they show symptoms.
They have made a rather interesting discovery: Fully 50% of all the a-symptomatic people they tested have proven POSITIVE for exposure to the COVID-19 Virus.
Don't assume that people without fevers and coughing are safe to be around. Maintaining as much distance as possible makes sense.
Everyone stay safe and healthy.

Gov. of CA says they expect 50% of residents will get the virus! Now that's scary!
-

More. He expects 25 million of the 40 million that live here.
How do I know it's serious? Most of the casinos in Las Vegas are already shut down. That's gotta look spooky.
What a time to be sneaking shots of all the empty streets for a cheapie sci-fi movie.
-
Los Angeles here... I was able to snag several days' worth of food, but the toilet paper and tissue shortages are re-damned-diculous! I really, really hate hoarders!!
Even Amazon is all out. My work is cool with accepting personal packages, but we just got shuttered. And I fear home delivery will only encourage porch piracy. There's a Target near me so I might try my luck there hyper early in the morning one of these upcoming days.
Scary stuff. Good luck to us all!

Speaking of crumpled up newspaper I had to use just that as toilet paper for about 8 weeks once when I lived in another part of the world. Rub it together vigorously for a bit and it gets quite soft. Don't try flushing it though - the sewer backup will cause bigger issues than the lack of toilet paper...

I don't want there to be things like COVID-19 in the world, but there are. I don't want people to have to die from them, but some will.
As long as those are facts - it might as well be jerks like this. It can only strengthen the gene pool.
Don't they have family and friends they want to keep safe by not catching it and bringing it home?
-
Realistically, how bad could it get?
Italy, with a population of 59 million, just had 793 virus attributed deaths in one day.
The United States has 329 million people.
SPRING BREAK, EVERYBODY!

If any of his relatives served in the War, it would have been his great-grandfather. He's Gen Z after all, which doesn't seem to get much of anything relating to the seriousness of the Corona Virus. Maybe it's their age. Then again, Millennials and Boomers seem to have their share of selfish folks too. The further we get from the Greatest Generation, the more disappointing everyone seems to be. It's really weird being out in society, having two grandfathers who served in WWII, where nobody seems to have any relatives who served in that war or any other. It's kind of surreal. There really should be some kind of national service requirement or community building requirement for young people today. It wouldn't help all of them, but it would go a little way to bringing America back together.

Well you can't say the situation wasn't fully predictable.
Meanwhile we're heading into spring break. The beaches of Florida beckon, and you know how young people are; they're invulnerable or at least they think they are.
There's no way this outbreak is going to be soon contained.

I live kinda near a freeway. When conditions are right, I can hear the traffic, sometimes. I'm not hearing much these days.
The county's biggest airport is pretty far away, but the planes have to swing quite wide when they are in a holding pattern. That brings a lot of really high (mostly silent) planes circling overhead. A lot fewer moving stars these nights.
Kinda reminds me of the days after 9-11. I lived a lot nearer that same airport, then. To have all the skies go silent was really eerie. Pleasant, but strange.
Disneyland is 5 miles away, as a crow flies. At 9:30 each night, I could see the lights from their daily last call fireworks display reflected off the bottoms of low clouds - even hear the loudest ones rumbling like far-off artillery, when the wind was favorable.
Now it is like living out in the country during those periods when the crickets all stop at the same time.

The idiot element though is still flocking to Florida beaches for spring break:...
A quote from a CBS News article:
"At least five students from the University of Tampa have tested positive for coronavirus after traveling with other students from the school for spring break, the university announced on Twitter. This comes after crowds of spring-breakers in Florida were criticized for ignoring social distancing guidelines and packing beaches in complete disregard of the potential risk.
University of Tampa announced on Friday that it learned that one student, who resides off-campus, tested positive for the virus. Just a day later, the school confirmed that five students, who were part of a larger group traveling together during spring break, had tested positive."
Potential candidates in the 2020 Darwin Awards.

Interesting, sober article. I like this because it seems like lately we're only getting two sides: Either kiss your ass goodbye, we're all f*#*%d or everything is awesome! nothing to see here folks, gonna be great!
How about something balanced. Yes we're in a precarious situation and we need to act responsibly, but at same time this isn't the f%$#*^g zombie apocalypse either.

The human race will survive.
As is always the case, one's opinion of the severity of the problem will depend quite a lot on whether they or someone they particularly care about are counted among the dead.

Reporter Number 1: AirTravel jumbo jet 429 crashed in the middle of a Nairobi housing tract last night. All 483 passengers and crew of 19 survived the plane's minute-long plummet from 27 thousand feet and initial impact but, sadly, perished in the resulting fire.
Reporter Number 2: That's horrible.
Reporter Number 1: There were no Americans aboard.
Reporter Number 2: (Somber) Thank the Lord it wasn't any worse ... (Brightening) And, now here's our own Stormy Mountains with your 3-day weekend weather!

In the meantime, we will seek balance between incompetent inaction and National Guard soldiers stationed at each toilet paper outlet to strictly enforce purchase quotas during the inevitable heavily armed, wide-eyed prepper Charmin riots.
Luck to us all. It really will wind down and end - let's hope sooner than later.
I wouldn't buy any stock in toilet paper companies. When sanity returns, the stores' shelves will be resplendent with 3-ply, scented, non allergenic, gluten-free butt swabs in the Super Economy Bundle. Only, who will not already have a lifetime supply in the attic/basement/garage and guestroom? Lacking any widespread dysentery outbreak, new sales will probably suffer for some time.

Social distancing? I've been practicing that for decades, since my mid-teens in fact! That was when I decided not to take up drinking because all the other kids at a party were drinking. Hey, why be like everybody else? You might say I was a pioneer when it came to social distancing.
;)

I thought collecting monster movies & toys was a form of social distancing.

I won't go into detail. We're well past that point. But the numbers coming out of much of Europe as well as the United States now are beyond horrifying. And we've not yet seen a slackening in the geometric rate of increase.
Incidentally I'm highly skeptical of the totals being officially released from China. I think the Chinese regime is grossly understating them to stem panic and save their own necks.

I honestly think most governments are. Maintaining "order" is high on all their lists. How far they go in that pursuit is a matter of conjecture, until we get some more dependable statistics. That will probably not come until this whole emergency is past.
I'll bet we know a lot more today about the 1916 flu pandemic than the people who lived through it ever did.
Meanwhile, do everything you can to stay safe.
You can take up some of your downtime at home by posting at the UMA more often. Maybe now would be a good time to finally take a picture of that toy you've been meaning to share with your fellow troops.
-
I'll bet we know a lot more today about the 1916 flu pandemic than the people who lived through it ever did.
Actually 1918-20.
The Spanish flu, also known as the 1918 flu pandemic, was an unusually deadly influenza pandemic. Lasting from January 1918 to December 1920, it infected 500 million people—about a quarter of the world's population at the time. The death toll is estimated to have been anywhere from 17 million to 50 million, and possibly as high as 100 million, making it one of the deadliest epidemics in human history.
To maintain morale, World War I censors minimized early reports of illness and mortality in Germany, the United Kingdom, France, and the United States. Papers were free to report the epidemic's effects in neutral Spain.....
Spain wasn't even where that strain of flu originated. The strain may have "originated" in China and then mutated near Boston and was then brought to Europe by American soldiers where it spread like wildfire due to barely existent wartime sanitation standards.

I have to go to work (into the office) Monday through Friday and then work at home Sat & Sunday. I am "essential personnel". Every day, all day, I deal with COVID 19 issues (logistical and direct health). I am really growing weary of COVID 19. I have most of my staff working from home (the past 2 weeks).

Much admiration and praise to those who go out and deal with this catastrophic situation. Good luck and stay safe.

Stay safe where you are.

I predict:
That around January 1st, 2021, there will be a massive world-wide spike in human births. This might be a good time to think about when and how you want to adjust your stock portfolio.
Why do I say this? Young, strong (more or less attractive) people who would normally be occupying their days with some sort of toil at least 8 hours a day, are being forced to stay home together with not all that much to do. Being denied all the casual social contacts they are accustomed to will make them rely even more heavily on the intimate relationships in their lives.
The human gestation period is about 280 days. As of March 28, 280 days (40 weeks) would take us to January 2, 2021.
I predict.

I live in Michigan, and our state has really been hit hard with the virus. I think we're in the top five states right now, though the vast majority of the cases are centered in and around Detroit. Last week, the Governor issued a three week stay-at-home order statewide. It allows for essential business to remain open, so we can still get what we need, but it's lead to a lot of confusion over what constitutes 'essential.' I work at a manufacturing plant that has informed its workers that it intends to stay open because we are "essential." We're not, really, but that's their interpretation. We've even been in the local news because of their refusal to shut down. Last week, two employees were sent home with COVID 19 symptoms, and they didn't inform the employees on the floor. They've had dozens of complaints to the attorney general, and we're still waiting to see how that plays out.
Meanwhile, all the office workers are working from home, and it's caused a major us-versus-them mentality. We've got about four hundred employees on the floor here, and if one person gets it, probably everyone will. Many of the workers are in their fifties and sixties. Morale is pretty bad right now and a lot of people are panicking. I always knew that businesses cared more for profits than people, but apparently, this is news to a lot of workers and there's a lot of anger and resentment. Hopefully, they come to their senses pretty soon and start honoring the stay at home order. There's no reason we should be working right now.
-
It's a real mess as far as deciding what "must" stay open, what must close and who has the right to make the decision and force people to respect it.
One problem, is the fact that businesses are so interdependent. Closing down a lot of small businesses means the vital ones lose their lines of supplies and means of shipment - or have open business who can receive those shipments.
It's all very confusing.
Whole states are deciding they rather not participate, thank you.
-
Thank you for that enlightening and useful information.

I know I shouldn't be surprised, but I'm still amazed by the stupidity of some people.
So a couple of organizations tracked the locations of cellphones leaving one particular beach in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and the results were of course predictably frightening. The subsequent track of these cellphones shows very clearly why the epicenter of the outbreak has shifted to the eastern part of the United States.
Now you would think that the reaction of any prudent individual would be "What in hell's name were those idiots doing flying to Florida to party on a beach during a coronavirus outbreak? Have they been living in a cave with no access to news since mid-February?" But no. Some Instagram users were outraged that cellphone locations could and were tracked! Excuse me? Some people don't realize that this is done all the time, particularly by governments? Don't they read detective and spy thrillers where the "bad guys" are tracked through their cell phones? Oh, of course, "students" these days don't read books or any form of print media.... ::)
But the whole Florida march break thing highlights just how slow the authorities have been to respond to the coronavirus. Why were these beaches not closed by March 1? Why were airlines still flying idiots to Florida in March?
Meanwhile the Canadian government just announced yesterday that people with symptoms won't now be allowed to board planes or trains. Just now?!!! I mean had our governments suspended travel to China in mid-January and international travel anywhere in late-February and put citizens returning from those places under quarantine at the time the spread of the virus might still be under control. Now the situation looks dire at best and at worst hopeless.
>:(
And I stick by my previous prediction that Florida will now surpass California within a few days when it comes to case numbers.

I know I am an idiot. I've been aware of it most of my life. Whenever I have temporarily forgotten, there has always been a helpful family member, friend, casual acquaintance or total stranger happy to step up and remind of that fact - usually at the top of their lungs in quite colorful language.
But I still find occasion to be embarrassed by my fellow man's overwhelming stupidity. The only thing that continues to surprise me is my renewed amazement each time.
Stay home. Stay safe.

Here's a fun prediction I missed:
Divorce attorneys are anticipating a surge in business after the Stay-At-Home restrictions are lifted. Already fragile unions are expected to be strained to their limits during these protracted periods of forced intimacy the next few months.
No matter how dire the news, there is always someone who benefits.
Gravestone carvers are quietly stocking up on granite slabs.

Seriously. All those guys running heavy equipment don't exactly gather around in little clumps. Couldn't they maintain their safe distances on the job?

You're kidding right? Everytime I see a construction crew, there's one guy working while the other six are in a group shooting the breeze watching the one guy working.

I'd like to share something on the hopeful side, if I may:
First of all, it's not my intent to minimize COVID-19. I've had bronchitis 2X in 2 months, placing me in a high risk category. It's hard, I wish I didn't have to work. I work in a shelter. We try to keep our numbers down, but we don't know what's going to come thru the door. Some clients aren't taking this seriously & are making bad decisions that could possibly affect the whole place.
However, MOST people who get COVID-19 are recovering. And we don't need doctor or hospital services unless we are experiencing shortness of breath. Also, MOST people who are hospitalized AND on ventilators are recovering. And keep in mind, the news & social media tend to sensationalize everything.
Our best defense IS hand washing/sanitizing & NOT touching your face or other people. Plus the 3-6ft physical distancing. These work. The virus is a wimp to soap, water & sanitizers.
A last note: Many of the front line healthcare workers who've died from COVID-19 were emergency room personnel who came in contact with it before more solid precautions were set into place.
I obtained this info from a recorded video conference featuring a NYC doctor who's been working w/virus patients exclusively for over a month. I can do my best to find it again, if you'd like to see & hear for yourself.

Good post. I know some people who are really losing their s%&# of this, and I try to get them to have some perspective. No doubt this is real, it's serious, it's scary, and we need to act responsibly. But as you point out, we know how this spreads, and how to stop it. We also know the percentages. Yet, I know people who are afraid to walk their dog or go to the grocery store. I feel really bad for the 20% who are infected and experiencing serious health problems. You point out, however, that as long as you cover your face when you sneeze and cough, practice social distancing, wash your hands regularly, and disinfect commonly used surfaces, you greatly, greatly, reduce the probability of being infected.
I don't see a lot of balance out there, but rather two extremes. People who are ignorant, if not defiant, and are making things worse by not practicing social distancing and proper hygiene. And then you have people who think the sky is falling. Problem is that side feeds into mass anxiety, not to mention triggers people hoarding toilet paper and hand sanitizer.
One side needs to wake the F up, and the other side needs to chill the F out. Just my opinion.
-
Geezer, you make some good points too, & thanks! I was in the "sky is falling" group until I came upon this info. It helped me to calm down & see things a little bit differently. By sharing it, I hope it will help others too.

We have a serious supply shortage in the United States. They don't want people running out and getting masks to wear everywhere. Problem is a mask is just as essential as washing your hands. Stay home. Don't visit family, friends, or anyone outside of your house.

Here's an article on this very subject:
U.S. Intelligence Report: China Has Been Cooking the Numbers (https://www.msn.com/en-ca/news/world/china-concealed-extent-of-virus-outbreak-us-intelligence-says/ar-BB121BXX?li=AAggNb9&ocid=mailsignout)
Russia, Iran, Indonesia and North Korea (Surprise, surprise!) are three of the other countries strongly suspected of way under reporting infections.

Is it just me, or has Internet traffic ground to a halt? I used to think that nuisance e-mails were nothing but minor irritants. But, now that even those have dried up, I miss the little diversions they provided.
One thing I'm not missing - cold call sales pitches from idiots who act like I should believe them when they tell me they are following up on an earlier conversation we had where I expressed interest in their service/product. They must have gotten my name from a sucker list made up of "seniors" who might possibly be wealthy retirees suffering from alzheimer's.
Wish I had a big, lazy dog that lives for ear-scratching from his human. He'd keep me company. (I don't have any more use for a cat than they do for people.)
I love quiet, but really this is ridiculous. At least if I lived in the country there would be occasional small wildlife and nightly serenades from the crickets and frogs.
But I am surrounded by my fellow human beings and I don't even hear TV's, radios, stereos - NUTHIN'! I can't remember the last time some idiot opened his car door without first turning off his alarm.
I'm beginning to wonder if I'm living my own Target Earth scenario and everybody was evacuated from the city while I was sleeping?
I can't imagine what it must be like for all of you who still go to work five days a week. How are you adjusting? I hope you are all making it out there.

Truthfully I can't understand why you yourself continue to live wherever you do in California. You're retired meaning you're not tied to a job. You're not tied to any kids. Why don't you blow earthquake country with its expensive real estate and move to a far cheaper locale?, Say a cabin or trailer park in the lovely Catskills or Alleghenies?
Is it the starlets and strip joints that keeps you in California?
???

The hookers. I'd have to leave my favorites.
That, and my friends are here. I'd really like to see how the two girls I babysit 3 times a week grow up - at least as much as i can before I croak. And I hate moving. Promised myself never again.
But, mostly the hookers.

Yep, I've been dreading that milestone. We were at Stater Bros Market this morning. Everything seemed so normal. Some shelves were sparse, but not apocalyptically so. We got everything we needed. Our gardener came by and worked. He was optimistic and cheerful. I haven't lost hope. I hope everyone here is safe and healthy. Keeping our conversations going helps a bit.
Btw, California is paradise and I would never leave. Every time I turn on the news, some states are facing floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, blizzards, etc. I look out my window, and everything is perfect. I've never had any major damage from earthquakes in the 50 plus years I've lived here. Keep your log cabins, I'll take Hollywood, beautiful beaches, movie star quality women, mountains, Sunset Strip, Universal Studios, quality strip joints...need I continue?

This isn't posted to depress members any more than they might be already.
It is intended to give everyone even more incentive to take extra care in avoiding COVID-19.
Medical care givers are telling us:
"Those saved through extreme medical interventions, including being attached to mechanical ventilators for a week or two, often suffer long-term physical, mental and emotional issues, according to a staggering body of medical and scientific studies. Even a year after leaving the intensive care unit, many people experience post-traumatic stress disorder, Alzheimer’s-like cognitive deficits, depression, lost jobs and problems with daily activities such as bathing and eating."
Please stay healthy.

Living in Staten Island, one of the 5 boroughs of New York City, there are over 300 cases of the virus just in my zip code. Only going out for groceries once per week or less. The market we go to has hours for seniors from 6 AM to 7:30 AM. Not crowded and pretty well stocked.Being in New York state with the highest cases of the virus is not what I would start yelling " We're Number One ,We're Number One ". So stay safe folks and I guess we'll be hearing about Social Distancing for awhile .

Revisiting my post from March 16th and comparing today's numbers below to those above that I found "frightening" then:
New York 113,704
Michigan 12,744
Florida 11,111
Louisiana 10,297
Ohio 3312
Italy - from 27, 980 to 119,82
Spain - from 9942 to 124,736
Canada - from 441 to 12,549
Even ten days ago I was looking at the numbers and thinking at least "we" here (wherever) don't have it as bad as they do over there. Now though the "we here" numbers have surpassed what were the over there numbers several fold....
:o

Two of the very fastest growing areas within North America for coronavirus infections in the last three weeks or so have been Michigan and Québec. The reasons behind the rapid growth in infection in these two locales have been rather different.
Michigan did not report its first coronavirus case until March 10th, but it currently has 15,718 behind only New York and New Jersey. This article explains why the virus has spread so rapidly in Michigan, particularly in the Detroit area:
Coronavirus Spread in Michigan - Michigan Health Watch (https://www.bridgemi.com/michigan-health-watch/why-did-coronavirus-spread-so-fast-michigan-compared-neighbors)
Among the possibilities Hutton and others have mentioned for the rapid spread in Michigan:
Detroit Metropolitan Airport, which has a large international hub and flights to Wuhan, China, where the outbreak originated in December and its airport remained open until Jan. 23.
Supply lines between Detroit automakers and Wuhan, a major auto hub and home to five car manufacturers including Dongfeng Motor, one of the biggest in China. General Motors has 15 assembly plants in China with its partners, while Ford has six and Fiat Chrysler has two.
Ties between automakers, particularly FCA, and Italy, which has more than 77,000 cases and 12,000 deaths.
Similarly in Canada Québec did not report its first presumptive case until February 27th and its fourth presumptive case until March 8th. But Québec now has 8580 confirmed cases far and away the most in Canada.
Part of the reaon is that Québec has close contacts with France where the coronavirus infection surfaced earlier than in most of North America and infection rates are far higher than they are here. Moreover the various Jewish communities in Montréal including Hasidic ones have close ties with similar ones in nearby New York City which has been savagely hit by the virus.
The main reason however is that March Break started earlier in Québec than in most other places. The last day of school in Québec prior to March Break was February 28th. The severity of the coronavirus outbreak on this continent did not become apparent for nearly a week so there was nothing much to dissuade students from flying off to Florida where Québecois love to sun themselves during the winter months. So therefore the incubator effect on planes took hold with the subsequent spread of the virus both in Florida and back in Québec upon their return.
Quebec's Coronavirus Cases - Globe and Mail (https://www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/article-why-quebecs-coronavirus-cases-have-skyrocketed/)
The impact of March Break partying in Florida will likely mirror what happened in Louisiana after Mardi Gras. The case count in Louisiana exploded about two weeks after Ash Wednesday on February 26th which marked the end of the Mardi Gras festivities. The first presumptive case in Loisiana was on March 9th and the number of cases has now grown to 14,867.
March Break travel to Florida beaches though is why eastern North America locales such as New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Michigan, Québec, Ontario and of course Florida and Louisiana have taken over from the west coast in the past two weeks as the epicenters of the growth rate of cases in North America. Given the effect of Mardi Gras on infections in the New Orléans vicinity, it's clear to me that there's still going to be hell to pay for the March Break stupidity on Florida beaches until probably late May.

Lost taste and smell, not to mention 12-14 pounds in 16 days
Sever coughing and bone aches, mostly my knees and feet.

I live in California, so today completes our first month of lockdown.
The Governor announced the lockdown on the 19th of March, the 12th birthday of a young friend of mine. As a result, she had a tiny birthday get together of immediate family, grandparents and me.
Tomorrow will be the 19th of April and begin month two. We've already been told the rest of this school year is cancelled. The 5½ year old sister of the aforementioned young friend heard me and her mother talking about when this started and asked her mom, "Will I have a Corona Virus birthday?" (Her birthday is in August.)
The 12 year old was excited about her last year at her elementary school and going to summer camp with the rest of her class. The little one was absolutely loving her first year of school and adored her teacher. They still get assignments via computer. The kindergartner completes all her assignments early and is always asking for more.
With all the hardships staying home is causing some people, I don't know why I feel so bad for these two kids, but I do.
I feel kinda guilty. I am retired, have my Retirement, Social Security and "Stimulus" checks automatically deposited to my bank account, and never go out much, anyway. This whole thing has been like nothing, to me. (Except I don't get to see the girls right now.)
Wonder how I will feel about this on May 19th?

I had to go to the post office today. I passed by a Waffle House that has been shuttered since this started here. They had a crew scouring and doing deep cleaning. My guess is they are preparing for re-opening once the restrictions here begin easing. May 1st we start re-opening an inch at a time here in Ohio, according to the news. Apparently we even had freedom protests today. I wouldn't know. I have barely walked out my door since this crap began.
-
... I wouldn't know. I have barely walked out my door since this crap began.
That's my situation here. I don't get to talk to people around here (don't even see them walking by), so I don't have any idea first hand of what's going on. I haven't been out at all. I've seen pictures of empty store shelves, but haven't been in any stores.
I find a lot more items SOLD OUT online, and had some items from my orders cancelled - that's all. Oh, and some delivery times have been much longer.
I appreciate hearing from real people about what they are experiencing.
Thanks for sharing.

How do you get food and supplies?

How do you get food and supplies?
I order online. I just put an order in for Vons Grocers for next Wednesday (The earliest possible opening.)
Before, I would place my order before 12:30 AM and it could be delivered as early as 8 in the morning, if I chose that time slot. Now it's hard to nail down a time slot - and I will probably have a couple items cancelled.
Target and Walmart are still making limited deliveries. Walgreens and CVS deliver, if I need meds, etc. A lot of restaurants deliver, but I can't have all the salt they put in their food - I pretty much have to cook my own.
I ain't sufferin'. I was doing this by choice before the lockdown.
-

I wouldn't want somebody else picking out my food for me. They'd either bring me the wrong brand (or bring me nothing if they didn't have the brand I wanted), or bring me jelly, instead of jam, or bring me green bananas, or whatever! And I don't wanna write some super detailed shopping list to get what I want. My list just says "soup" and I know what to get.

The Vons order form has a place to check for No Substitutions, etc. and a box for each item to write special instructions like "green" or "full yellow".
Never had any problem - They have their own refrigerated trucks and don't even allow tipping for their delivery people.

You can browse what they have in the same aisle or department - Like just look through Deli Counter, if you don't already know what you want. No hot items - but I can't eat those, anyway (Salt). All I know, is it works for me.

Yes, I still shave for a few reasons. (1) I have to go into the office not infrequently; (2) if I’m not in the office I am doing video conferences 8-10 hours a day; and most important by far (3) my wife hates facial hair and would immediately stop ... making out with me if I didn’t shave every day. I really like making out with her.

The U.S. now has over 50,000 deaths from COVID-19, more than 10,000 of those happened in nursing homes.
People who want to minimize those numbers like to point to the 50,000 a year that die in auto accidents. But the virus deaths are from the last 60 days or so.
It hasn't hit close to me, yet. But, I do know a couple people who have had family members who have died from it.
The worst part, is the helplessness to do anything but try to have zero contact with anyone and wait for medical science to catch up.

The statement by WHO is nothing short of fear mongering and it bothers me quite a bit. I’m not going to get into the specifics of antibodies and T cells and what not, but I am having a hard time finding any justification for that absurd statement by WHO. I can admit that maybe IF this virus is 100% different than all other remotely related viruses it could maybe, possibly but probably not be possible that there is no immunity. But rather than get long winded let me just point out one fact.
Many people (the vast majority) do recover after contracting COVID 19. In order to recover from ANY virus you have to have built up an immunity sufficient to kill off the virus. Otherwise you would continue to suffer the symptoms of the virus for the rest of your life until you died. So, if you obtain sufficient immunity to kill off the virus 1 time then in every known case of virus (at least I am familiar with) you retain significant immunity to the virus, at least for a period of time until the virus mutates (which makes it a different virus so you actually aren’t being reinfected with the same virus).
From everything I know about this particular coronavirus it is actually extremely slow at Replicating and mutating (WAY slower than the normal flu strains) so immunity is likely to be for much longer periods of time. It would also make a vaccine (when developed) much more likely to be effective.
WHO has been extremely irresponsible and frankly incompetent of late. Pro tip: whenever WHO uses the term “there’s no evidence” you can assume they have no clue what they’re talking about. For example when they said in January that there is no evidence of transmission of coronavirus human to human (oops, it had only been transmitting that way in China for over two months at that point). Or the time they said there is no evidence a family pet can catch coronavirus (except they can and have). Or when they repeatedly stated that China was doing a bang-up job controlling the virus and we should all be thankful (except that China covered it up for over a month and then cut off travel from Hubei to the rest of China on January 23, but not from Hubei to the rest of the world for another 2 months). WHO has crapped their pants on this over and over again.
Anyway, my unsolicited thoughts.

Absolutely 100% true. The W.H.O. has acted as nothing but an apologist for the Communist Chinese government since the start of the Wuhan outbreak. The only way the transmission to the rest of the world of the virus could have been slowed was by the rest of the world restricting travel from China in early January. Yet even as late as February the W.H.O. continued to advise against travel restrictions targetting China (probably because the Peking government feared the economic impact of such measures). The W.H.O. actually praised the Chinese government's efforts to "contain" the virus despite the fact that the doctors who had warned of the outbreak in December had been reprimanded for anti-Chinese rumour mongering and the Chinese government had been doing all it could to play down the threat posed by the virus!
Moreover one of the very few (only?) countries to have contained the Wuhan virus so far has been Taiwan. But the W.H.O. refuses to even allow any Taiwanese reps into its offices because of obeisance to the Peking government! The W.H.O. has become nothing but the mouthpiece of the Communist Chinese and should be replaced.

This damned COVID19 has done very little to change my life. Things go on pretty much as before for me - so far. That's why I like to hear about what it is doing to other people. Kind of get a feel for what they are experiencing.
A friend couple, with two kids, has been negatively effected. He is laid off and she now works from home. Both kids are being schooled at home (the teachers deliver and grade assignments) and they have an additional young adult living with them. Makes things cozy in a two-bedroom apartment with NO yard.
The parents threw an indoor picnic for the kids (one 12 and one 5) they put out a spread and ate on the floor. They had all the typical picnic finger foods, etc. I can't imagine my parents ever doing something like that.
I suggested that they have the kids camp out in the living room. They have sleeping bags and can set up a bedsheet tent. They have flameless candles. They can construct a cardboard teepee of "logs" and put one inside to make the fire flicker. Then they can sing campfire songs and tell each other scary tales. (Dad can scratch on the outside of the tent and growl at some point.)
One does what one must.

Been seeing a lot more people walking around the last week or so. Almost all without masks.
This is a very low traffic area and so most of them aren't clustered together, unless they are already living together in the same house, anyway... But this is Southern California and we are supposed to wear masks. I ordered some a long time ago, but they are taking an awful long time to deliver them.
It was kind of charming to see the Vietnamese family across the way enjoying some sun. Their 3 little kids were playing on the lawn and the young wife was giving her husband an at-home haircut. Looked like a modern Norman Rockwell painting. They stayed close to their front door and weren't endangering anyone. (No one else was out at the time.)
Put me in mind of the scene in 1984 when Edmond O'Brien's Winston Smith was enjoying listening to the woman sing while she hung clothes on the line.
Like him, I long for things to be like they were before.
-

I don't see the point in wearing a mask if you're just out for a walk, as long as you are not walking in a big crowd.
I think the TV reporters standing outside, all by themselves, wearing a mask look silly. OK, we get it already!

Yeah. The masks are for when other people are within sneezing distance (27 ft.?)
These people were all living together in the same apartments, anyway - and just walking around in our very large common area that is not frequented by outsiders.
Of course, the mail carrier, UPS, etc. wear masks, when they come through.

Nah, just a pleasant, laid-back Spring day in Southern California.
Where I live, it seems far away from any of the hustle and bustle of all the goings on, going on outside. It is a large collection of townhouses with an expansive central common area. But you almost never see anybody. They almost never use their front doors. When coming and going they enter and leave by the 2-car garages we all have, circling the outside of the complex. And quiet. I must have the quietest neighbors that exist.
We have pool, but it is almost never used by anyone but me - even in normal times. It's like having a private pool 95% of the time. I hope they open it back up soon. Don't they realize I can't catch anything by myself out there?
Governor will be locking down the beaches again. Never liked sand in my crotch, anyway.

Crime has been down, neighbors are quiet, markets are well stocked...all's good in Cali. We are number 5 in COVID-19 cases. Not too bad considering our population. All sensible people are complying (in most cities). Of course, the beach bimbos want out. I guess all that sun does damage to more than skin. Stay safe, everyone.

California has a lot of cases, but a pretty big population - so, on a States List, we are pretty far down the per capita ratings.
Hope we can improve that number.

Went to Wal-Mart yesterday evening. Needed coffee and bread. Should've been a quick in and out shopping experience. Took half an hour. No one was wearing masks. No one social distancing. No one following the "herd traffic" directional stickers on the floors. Place was packed. 4 cashiers, 2 of which were handling the "self checkouts". The gagging smell of body odor and funyons filled the air. The kid behind me in the checkout line kept giving me what I refer to as "grief face". Apparently I was not moving as quickly through the self check out as he would like. Once finished, I entered the parking lot. I was approached by a homeless woman. She says "Excuse me sir, I am homeless and pregnant. Can you donate some money to me?" Then proceeds to raise her shirt clear up to her neck, and rub her belly as if to convince me of her forthcoming "blessed event". I told her I don't carry cash, was sorry for her, and retreated to the safety of my car: where my wife, and our faithful canine companion, awaited me. Leaving the house for groceries now makes me feel like Rod Taylor carrying a torch and fighting back Morlocks. The state may be re-opening, but I think I am gonna put my comings and goings on "impulse power" for a couple months yet. I can hold out that long for a haircut, despite looking like Don King every morning when I wake up. So I guess things are back to **ahem** normal around this neck of the woods. Wasn't exactly normal before though.

I just got another delivery order from Vons.
They delivered everything I asked for except 3 12-packs of soda instead of 4 (They were on sale for $2.50 ea.) and 2 bottled teas instead of 3.
No hassle with the public or the retail personnel, they placed all items on my kitchen counter, just inside the door. And Vons drivers do not accept tips.
I hope it stays this simple for a while longer. I hear horror stories from friends who insist on going to the stores.

After living through this, I am thoroughly convinced that there has never been and there never will be a threat of greater consequence to America than itself.

So frustrating to have to fear something you can't see, hear, feel, taste or smell. You never know where it might be hiding - or if it will kill you, leave you without any symptoms or sneak up much later and get you with blood clots.
Wears on everybody's nerves - especially when they don't even have the normal daily distractions of work and outside leisure activities.
Everyone here stay safe. There are too damned few of us as it is.

I do brother, I do. Top jt off with a Snickers bar and there's your dairy and nuts. Trust me, I'm a real health nut when it comes to eacting. Exercise....i hear you even burn calories while sleeping. Guess I'll just step up my schedule. Two birds, one stone.

What with all the protests, many thousands of people are spending numerous hours in very close proximity, shouting, running, etc. A small percentage of those are being rounded up and placed on buses, where they will be taken to crowded holding tanks for booking and other processing. (Some will stay longer and fill already overcrowded jails.)
Most of them will be sent home to jobless home lockdown - and possibly infect family members.
I really fear this will cause virus spikes in the next 2-3 weeks that could be quite dramatic and overtax the hospitals that have been getting a slight downturn in some areas and are just now gearing up for the normal rush in other areas.
I really hate seeing the numbers going back up in more rural states, already.
The Michigan floods forced a lot of people together in shelters. And hurricane season starts with this month.
California is w-a-a-y overdue for a sizable quake.
(I don't think the comedic movies I've been watching are having the desired effect.)

I agree. And the numbers in D.C., Maryland and Virginia have been growing at a disproportionately rapid rate for several weeks already. Now we can look for another March break type of effect all along the eastern seaboard from Massachusetts right down to Florida well into July.

California has had some fractional lockdown easing and we may be starting to collect our earliest protest dividends.
This from ABC News:
"As of May 31, the portion of Los Angelenos testing positive for the virus was hovering at around 4%, according to Curative's data, which offers a roughly representative snapshot of the county as a whole, according to CEO Fred Turner.
But the portion of positive tests began climbing on June 1, up to 6% by June 2 and jumping again to 8.7% by June 3. Although experts agree there's a two-week lag to see the true impact of social movement on infection rates, the Curative data may offer an early glimpse at what's happening in Los Angeles.
The average person does not develop symptoms until about four or five days after they are exposed to the virus, and some people see symptoms from a range of two days to two weeks after exposure, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention."

Found on the Interwebnet:
"A team of European scientists say they have found two genetic variations that may show who is more likely to get very sick and die from coronavirus, and they say they have also found a link to blood type.
Their findings, published Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine, point to a possible explanation for why some people get so seriously ill with the virus, while most barely show any symptoms at all.
They found people with Type A blood have a higher risk of catching coronavirus and of developing severe symptoms, while people with Type O blood have a lower risk.
"Our genetic data confirm that blood group O is associated with a risk of acquiring Covid-19 that was lower than that in non-O blood groups, whereas blood group A was associated with a higher risk than non-A blood groups," the researchers wrote in their report. They found people with Type A blood had a 45% higher risk of becoming infected than people with other blood types, and people with Type O blood were just 65% as likely to become infected as people with other blood types.
The large international team first published their findings on a non-peer-reviewed preprint server. The report has now been reviewed and published in the widely respected journal."

They could sell little placards to be displayed in the windows.
All the Walmarts in this area are closing at 8:30 PM now. The nearest Walmart actually sits on a huge lot that was a drive-in before they built the Walmart. Highway 39 Drive-in had more than one screen. They used the broadcast sound system where you listen to the movie over your car radio.
It could work - if people would embrace the idea. But with big TV screens and surround sound, I think the novelty would quickly wear off.

Just saw an article announcing that, while the Rose Bowl football game is still tentatively scheduled for 2021, next year's annual Rose Parade has been cancelled, due to COVID-19.
First time the Pasadena parade has been cancelled since WWII.
Probably doesn't mean much to the rest of the country, but in California, that is tantamount to cancelling the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York.

Daily new case numbers have moderated in many states in the northeast from Illinois to Maine, but new case numbers in California and other sunbelt states have continued to rise inexorably. Yesterday's total of 9561 new cases was a new high for California.

We will never know the true numbers and statistics. I'm from CA and the state is testing a record number of people daily (nearly 105,000 per day at present), so naturally, the number of people testing positive is going to sound high, but in actuality, we're still clipping at about a 7.5% positivity rate or so. The problem is (and I've heard it firsthand through people I know who have tested positive and/or work at a testing site) that the numbers are quite skewed in false positives (people who have been given the Flu vaccine within the last year but are totally asymptomatic), people that have tested positive and re-test after few weeks/months to find they are still considered positive (which is counted as a new case, even though it's the same person and they are completely symptom free), etc. In addition, the mortality rates remain extremely low based on CA's population; we are at 18 COVID-related deaths per 100,000 people (.00018%) and even the death numbers are questionable. There have been numerous reports of COVID-19 being misreported as cause of death for people who are already dying from other diseases (cancer, pneumonia, heart failure, etc.) and people in hospice care. I think things are being considerably overblown and sensationalized by our media and politicians. Let's not even get into the collateral damage being done by these shelter in place orders. That being said, I hope all my UMA brothers & sisters remain safe and COVID free.

I know someone who died with COVID as the initial cause, but it was quickly retracted by local health officials, as he was dying of something else before he contracted COVID. So, it happens, but the officials are on top of it and quickly correct the errors. My state has been good about updating the numbers and correcting errors.

So I decided to gear up and go exploring recently. Just to see what life is like outside of my home and the grocery stores these days. I went to some old haunts. 3 comic stores, a flea market, a Halloween novelty store, and a toy shop. The Halloween and novelty shop (pre-covid) was always packed. I mean, elbow to elbow packed. The place is called Foy's in Fairborn, Ohio. Of the comic stores, I was the sole person in 2 of the 3 besides the cashier. I was one of 4 people in the toy store, and the SOLE PERSON in Foy's. Something unheard of before corona. As I walked out of Foy's....the streets of downtown Fairborn were empty. Besides me and some fella I suspect was homeless....it was empty. There were about a dozen cars parked in retail areas, but they weren't in the stores I was in... for the most part. I think we have destroyed ourselves with our reaction to this virus. Everyone seems to be in permanent "stay home" mode now. It's almost as if humans have just decided to go.... nowhere now. I have known about a dozen people who have had covid. Only one has died, but he also was a cancer survivor, and had the beginnings of dementia. He was 83. The rest recovered. I am unsure what exactly the long term effects of human behavior is going to be when this is all over. If its ever all over. Just an observation. No politics implied or intended. Its just a commentary on....fear, maybe? I think the change is more strange... to me, anyway... than the actual virus.

Glad people are staying home by you, because people are out in force over here. They need to stay the h*** home. Stay the h*** home. Don't have family gatherings, which are, by far, the worst spreading events, and keep your kids in the house, because they are the worst spreaders due to their immense social interactions and lack of masks. Just stay the h*** home and keep your kids away from friends. Create social bubbles. You can go to the store, go shopping like you did, but wear a mask, and not go out if you are sneezing or coughing. If everyone did this, we'd have this under control.
-
I don't go out any more. I can order anything I want delivered to my door.
Don't really mind it much for me. But I know some working folks who are having a hard time - with two kids they have to supervise online home-schooling for now.
Mostly, I miss baby-sitting the two girls for about 3 hours, 3 times a week. Really miss the little one's enthusiastic hugs.
I wish this would all pass. The virus, the elections, the demonstrations... I could use some good news for for a change.

Should give us some of those beautiful drone overheads like we have loved here on earth. I hope they can send back movies and not just still. For the first time, they will be sending us sounds from Mars, the wind, the whining motors of the rover, the crunch of the wheels on the dry soil...
Best of all, Perseverance will be selecting and collecting samples for a future un-manned mission to pick up and return home. First time for material from another planet.
I wish I could have lived to see a human walking on Mars. Their return would be cause for the biggest "ticker tape" parade New York has ever seen - enough kindling to burn down the whole damned city.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) say that they expect some 44,000 more deaths in the U.S. during the month of August - bringing the total to about 200,000. So much for the hot weather abatement theory.
Meanwhile, California is having wildfires (suspected arson, or course) in the southern half.
The east coast is beginning what promises to be a robust tropical storm/hurricane season.
We need some major positive/fun distractions to replace going to sporting events, concerts beaches, national parks, schools and jobs.
Any ideas?

Is he like the fourth or fifth head of government to get it? None of them have died. Were any of them as old?

Trump and Melania will be fine, just like approximately 99% of those who have already gotten it. Should things take a turn for the worse, the therapeutics that have been developed over these last 6 months will definitely help the situation. The media tends to sensationalize COVID-19 as if it's a death sentence to anyone who gets it, which is irresponsible and sad.

He's 74 and clinically obese. There is cause to take it a bit more seriously. Some of the survivors spent months on respirators or had unpleasant lingering side effects.

I have a friend. She is also 74. She has a compromised immune system. She recently recovered from cancer. She suffers from clinical depression due to outliving her only child. She is overweight and has renal issues. She got covid. It put her in the hospital for 9 days. She beat it. I think a lot of who beats it and who doesn't has to do with genetics.

I agree. I don’t know if it’s genetics or some other random thing but I’ve known a ton of people who have had COVID. None that I know personally died. Only one went to the hospital and she was 85 and very overweight (is fine now). When one specific person called and told me they were positive I really thought in my own mind they might have a decent chance of not making it. 69 years old. More serious health conditions than I can count. Very much overweight. She ended up having a fever and cough but was totally fine in a few days.
Meanwhile LOTS of other people have very serious complications and die. There has to be something that so causes it to dramatically impact some and not others. Really weird.

People who get it and "recover" have been reported to have serious symptoms much later - like blood clotting, etc.

For Christ's sake Mord you can take your crap and shove it. For one thing it's not allowed here.

And for another if you can't see that the Democrats with their ever bigger government policies are worse, much worse than Donald Trump, you're dumber than a stone. Why can't you get it through your thick head that more government logically entails less individual freedom? "Those who would give up essential Liberty to purchase a little temporary Safety quickly end up with neither."
And even the most cursory look at American history should reveal that it was individual enterprise and not big government that enabled your country to grow and prosper and it's precisely the prosperity thus engendered that continues to attract people to America. Keep removing individual initiative as a motivating factor and not just California but the rest of your country will go the way of Venezuela.
