Title: Post your Monarch Models buildups here!
Post by: Hepcat on March 13, 2020, 12:53:56 PM
Monarch Models of London, Ontario wasn't known for releasing kits on a timely basis. Nor was it known for releasing many kits. Monarch was instead known for releasing kits that though rare in number were over-the-top sensational! Here are two:

The Ghost of Castel-Maré (June 2011)

Gorgo (May 2014)

So post your Monarch buildups here!

My dad loves the Forgotten Prisoner. When Ghost was announced, he had me build and paint this one for him. I like how it turned out overall. he loved it. That's the important part. It's a great kit, maybe Monarch's best in my opinion. Although I love all the kits they did. I will see if I can find shots of the Nosferatu I did.

How did you paint the Ghost and what kind of paint did you use?

 ???

Paints I used were Citadel miniature paints and some Testors oils. I went with an off the wall contrasting colors look. My attempt at getting the effect that the torch was all that was illuminating the castle, and to make him appear a tad transparent.

I have two Monarchs in my stash. Their second kit, Sinbad, and their fourth kit, Gorgo. I'm reluctant to build either, as there aren't exactly a lot of them around (with the exception of the Frightening Lightning version of Gorgo). I'm especially reluctant to build my Gorgo, as it's molded in yellow-green, which is supposed to be the rarest of the colors the kit was produced in. The Gorgo kits were notorious for having extra and/or missing parts, and sure enough, mine was missing the clock faces. Monarch sent replacements at no charge.

I wonder how/why Monarch couldn't get this simplest of all details right. Were the kits actually manufactured in China or something?

Here are the Monarch Models kits I have done, I think I have all of Scott's kits.  I met him at a Wonderfest a couple of times around 10 years back.  He is a doctor and did this on the side because of his love of the old Aurora monsters.  Then it got to be too much and he closed the doors about 4 or so years back.  There are rumors he may be preparing to start up, possibly at a lower pace, again and a Fly kit might get released.

How much slower could the revived company be? First time around, their delays of announced kits went on for years. ;) Anyways, I recently read somewhere that the Moon Suit might be next. But I'm not holding my breath.

Truth!

Monarch does deserve full credit for its box art though which is simply fabulous. It's far better than that of the kits produced by Polar Lights or Moebius (unless of course the latter two companies simply reproduced the Aurora box art). Monarch's box art is actually up to the quality of James Bama's Aurora long box originals.

Yes, Monarch's box art was excellent, as were their sculpts (with the exception of the Dracula and Jekyll-Hyde repros).

Those were re-pops of old Aurora Monster of the Movies kits so Scott didn't have anyone sculpt them for him.  Jekyll/Hyde was produced after he had actually terminated operations and he was selling them to people who got notified by model websites.  I bought a box of four but only used two and sold the other two.  He had an attack of the 50' man and the fly in the works before he closed the doors.

Yes, I know they weren't original sculpts. That's why I called them "repros."

Attack of the 50' man? Is that the same as The Amazing Colossal Man? Why bother anyway? The one I'd like to see is Attack of the 50 Ft. Woman:

Also, I'd like to point out to those who criticized Monarch for their slow release schedule, Monarch was ONE guy, whose full time job is a dentist. He did all of it in his spare time with his own money. What he managed to accomplish is nothing short of amazing, and I challenge anyone who thinks they can do better by themselves to put their money where their mouth is.

No problem!  I forgot there is a variant of Gorgo with different box art.

Never knew the exact reason but they did the painting over using another artist.

Never knew the exact reason but they did the painting over using another artist.

Because they're both fabulous and I guess Dr. Scott McKillop couldn't decide between them and decided to let buyers make the choice for themselves. Many of course would have opted for one of each which was so much the better for Monarch!

Incidentally, does anyone have contact info for Dr. McKillop? We're both from London, so why is he ignoring this thread here? It's unseemly if I do say so myself.

 ???

P.S. I've now sent Dr. McKillop an email in my own inimitable style. Maybe that will induce him to post in at least this thread.

I dunno. The picture I remember seeing had a much more varied selection of kits including Ghost of Castel-Maré and Gorgo originals with Frightening Lightning and Glow variants thrown in among the originals.

I agree! Monarch's kits are made from styrene plastic with parts attached to sprues just the  way Aurora's were. The other one man outfits all release models fabricated from resin or at best vinyl. Moreover Monarch's offerings are actually model kits with multiple parts unlike those issued by almost all other one man outfits which issue "kits" with a pathetic two or three parts. In other words, Monarch model kits are real kits in every way and the box art rivals that of the Aurora kits.

But Dr. Scott McKillop is a radiologist not a dentist.

I guess I missed this thread.  I have all the Monarch kits and met Scott a couple of times at Wonderfest some years back.  I don't know it if has been mentioned but there are strong rumors he is planning on some future releases but only rumors so far.  As mentioned he does have a full time job as a doctor or dentist in Canada so this was in his spare time and probably a loss investment but whatever he wasn't going to get rich doing it.  Here's some old Wonderfest photos and one has him sitting in the background.

Are those Dr. McKillop's own builds?

 ???

Mine are spread out. I couldn't even get to the Gorgo kits or the regular Ghost kits.  I think I have around 35.

Have you built any yet?

 ???

And speaking of Gorgo, we also need more pictures of Gorgo builds in this thread! Just the single nice one above by rkoenn isn't enough.

Can anyone venture a guess as to why Dr. McKillop may have opted for black plastic for the Gorgo kit though?

Black is a terrible colour for a kit. Details don't pop out as readily and it requires thicker coats of paint. Kits should be white, cream or light grey. In Gorgo's case perhaps green, but certainly not black.

 ???

Mine is yellow-green. I remember reading somewhere that McKillop really likes colored plastic, and builds models (including his own company's kits) in their molded colors, without painting them. Definitely a different approach to making models, but I can see how an all-black Gorgo would look pretty sharp.

If any kit ought to have been released in transparent neon glow colors, like the Monogram Luminators, it was The Ghost of Castel-Maré.

Monarch making models again would be awesome! I remember them specifically mentioning The Thing from Another World , War of the Worlds and Time Machine being possible licenses they would like to produce. Throw in The Blob and THEM! and I would be a very happy modeler!

My Monarch Nosferatu with Repalcement head.

Cool! Interesting though that both the Monarch Nosferatu build-ups we're seeing in this thread are with replacement heads. I'm wondering whether that indicates that the head included with the original Monarch kit was lacking somehow.

Actually the kit was going to come with two polystyrene heads in the box.But instead Scott went with the one head that came with kit. This one was later released in resin.Aurora did the the same with the PS Giant Mammoth with alternate trunk and front legs. But scrapped the idea due to costs even though the legs and trunk were sculpted. The parts were later released 30yrs later in resin when collector but the extra parts that Aurora sculpted for the Woolly Mammoth.

Thanks! The paint used was Americana Black,Apple Barrel kelly green,Vallejo Dark sand. The skin was based in dark sand then dry-brushed with shade of Kelly green and some black to it while dry-brushing to darken certain scales on the body. The shell on the back was based in black and dry-brushed with kelly green and and dark sand.I do use a airbrush on kits. But this one really calls for the old school dry-brushing method.
