Welcome to Collection Corner!
This thread is a video/photo showcase of members favorite masks in their collections.
You are welcome to shoot a cellphone (or better) video, or take photos of one mask at a time that you are particularly fond of or find interesting, and tell us something about it. Your post doesn't have to be a history lesson, but can be even just a personal account of where, why or how you acquired it, or why it appeals to you. Feel free to post videos, pics or just comment!
Please participate!

Some of you may remember this thread on the HMA.
When it sadly disappeared, the thread had over 32,000 views and over 700 replies.
I won't try to recreate that thread here, but rather start fresh with my most recent video, below. You can always catch up on my videos on the Collection Corner YouTube channel, where you will even find guest appearances by Ed Edmunds, Dr. Lady, Chris Zephro, Tony Zagone and more!
www.youtube.com/c/CollectionCorner (http://www.youtube.com/c/CollectionCorner)

I'll get this thread started!

Unfortunately, nobody can. Videos stopped working, on this board, a couple of years ago and nobody seems able to fix it.  :(

This is a welcome treat, jupiter2. Your mask critiques were one of our few remaining attractions at the now defunct HMA and I'm happy to see you've made the transition.
I'll be your first contributor with this Don Post classic everyone should recognize >

It was fairly easy to get at the time and beautifully painted but I ended up parting with it because of the eyes.
At some point, Post Studios started widening the eye trims on all their masks which must've made it easier to see out but lessened the creepiness.
Tor looks way better with pinprick pupils which would never pass safety regulation today, but hey ... wasn't that part of the thrill?

So glad you're continuing Collection Corner here, jupiter 2! I subscribed to your channel a long time ago after seeing videos on the HMA.

By the way, the video displays just fine on the site when I use my PC. I'm running Firefox.

PS Here's my Death Studios Tor:

Like the box said, "They were the greatest monster masks of the 1960s". I might add that DP's "Calendar" reissues were also the greatest mask edition
released in modern times. I didn't score mine until well after they were in production but what a thrill to see the GS Frankenstein included after 30+ years.

I foolishly passed on The Wolf Man the year these came out when I found out it was only for display purposes. I was looking for a wearable mask that year and it was much too small for my fat head.

Now you know why I go by the moniker "D'oh!"

It was curled up at one side. I wedged something inside the box to hold it down and it gradually returned to shape.

As to how it got that way in the first place, we can only imagine ...

I'm in the camp of hating the Rob Zombie movies, but did like what they did for the mask in his H1. Frankly, I found the aging more convincing there than in the Halloween 2 reboot from 2018.

Sam McCain was a great painter, one of the best that Don Post Studios ever had. I was never able to get a Frankenstein mask
from that batch he painted back in 1989 (they were only sold at Universal Studios Florida) but based on photos I've seen, yours
looks just like them. Congratulations, vader45.

He was not cheap at $450 but that was a price I was willing to pay. Then the crooks who run Ohio took $33 in internet sales tax. I think that's utterly ridiculous they charge internet tax, where is the money going? Does Ohio have owners stock on the Internet?

But it sure beats out my rotted out copy I had for a few years.

Interesting. That photo looks exactly like the one that just got in the mail. The other has the extra yellow and different hairline. But Sam said he painted that one. IDK now. Lol

One thing to note is, the rotted one has the 1962 copy right stamp while the other has no stamp.

Tag has a Morris Costumes price tag of $70.00. even this mask fetched a premium price back then!

P.S. a simple Google search told me the yellow scar is on the 1983 Frankenstein. The stock photo 100% matches mine. I think Sam was just a little mistaken. Glad that's cleared up!

It's a cool Malone design which I used to see in Halloween stores around town, always liked it until they bloodied it up.
Trick or Treat Studios catalogs it as "Titan Find Thanatoid". I searched that title and found poster art depicting this
character. Was it the intended alien before the movie was repackaged as "Creature"? If anyone here knows Mr Malone
well enough to ask him, inquiring minds want to know. Thanks for the review, jupiter2. I always enjoy them.

No, I was just drawing a parallel to a popular thread in the "Music" forum here.

I should probably be ashamed to admit it but I just watched the "Pickman's Model" episode of
1971's Night Gallery today, for the first time ever. 'Well acted, atmospheric, great suspenseful
build-up to the monster's climactic rampage. The monster itself is literally a patchwork of
other monster suits but its reveal is quite effective in the context of the story.
It got me to reminiscing about the mask I once had back in 1983 >

It was only catalogued and produced that one year by Distortions Unlimited from John Chambers' original mold >

'Seems it left my collection soon afterwards but now that I can relate to the character so much better ...
Oh well, perhaps it will return someday to haunt my cellar ...

I bought 4 Don Post reissue masks from Dennis Druktenis back in the early 2000s. The Creature mask was the only one boxed and I paid $100 for it. Other prices paid were $50 each for Dracula and Metaluna Mutant, and $40 for Mole People, as I recall.

Even those have gotten a bit pricey. I checked evilBay and there's one for $60 plus SH, and the other 4 are over a hun?!  ???

Every time you turn around prices have shot up on something that used to be cheap just the other day, or at least it seems that way. Anymore when I see something I like I just grab it if it's cheap and I've got the dough. Of course, you can't buy everything and sometimes you wait too late- just part of collecting I guess.

While searching for something else, I ran across what may be the very first Distortions Unlimited catalog >

It's an oversized flier, meant to be folded up and mailed, with space for an address label on the reverse side.
It's also the only catalog from which I can proudly claim to have owned copies of every single mask pictured.
The first two I ordered were Mutation I and Were Jaguar. Both arrived in March 1980 and so began my
indulgence as a Distortions collector >

This character debuted as "Alien" in 1975. A fellow collector later dubbed it "905 Alien",
after its Don Post catalog number, to distinguish it from all the other alien masks that
have invaded since.

darker and darker. Being new to our world, perhaps they didn't react well to sunshine >

By 1979 its paint scheme had been revised and I purchased another. It was to be my favorite,
not only for the color but this edition still depicted the original Malonian sculpture >

There's said to be a backstory to all the characters created by Bill Malone and Bob Short at DPS.
Do you suppose it might include how Alien maintains its oral hygiene?

Of the sixteen spooks inside (yes, I remember them all vividly) only three really scared me,
one of which was a gorilla. Today I have a particular fondness for gorilla masks, the hokier
the better, which can be traced directly back to that nostalgic childhood trauma.

Near the top of my favorites list is this awesome ape from Studio Quality Masks >

Back in 1984 I scored an amazing custom ET head, adapted from the movie mold.
It was so big, I could've easily worn it but for its skinny little neck. Trying to work
my head through there probably would've killed me! I owned hundreds of other
masks at the time and was never able to make room for this, nor did it fit in with
the prevailing monster theme. Later that same year, ET "found home" in an east coast collection >

Nowadays I'm quite content with the retail version from Don Post Studios, especially after
having it repainted. For anyone questioning my change of mind on the character, I now
value this more as a DPS mask than a memento from the popular movie >

With its over-the-top expression, coupled with that "denizen-of-a-dark-ride" quality,

This sci fi thriller came along rather late in my classic movie exposure. I didn't watch it for the first time

what it looked like ... and never really did until this mask came along in the late 1980s >

It was the last original version in stock before S.E. redesigned the character for the '80s.
This style remains my all time favorite and featured such custom touches as extended bib,
zippered back slit, and I love the way it smelled (no, not like brimstone).

Nearly all of the Mr HYDE masks I've ever owned have been Don Post versions.
Having missed out on The Halloween Society's edition, my consolation prize was
to be this alternate of the 1931 makeup. Sculpted at Alvarez Wax Models, I bought
one as a raw casting and hired somebody to finish it for me. Several years later, I
finally did score an HS edition and sold this one within months to a collector in Japan.
The HS HYDE may have a more extreme expression but AWM's looks like it had
much darker things on its mind >

Today's terror is actually a new score from earlier this week.  It's my new BALOK mask depicting the alien monster
from a first season Star Trek episode entitled "The Corbomite Maneuver". SNG Studio created it just last month

Dave's Mornak mask makes a brief appearance in the 1983 Disney/Ray Bradbury movie, Something Wicked This Way Comes.  He's one of Mister Dark's minions in the parade through the town.  Dave Ayres also sculpted the Quasimodo Hunchback mask for DPS back in 1975.  Thanks for the memories, Sir!

Thanks for the info, zotzcoin. Somebody once pointed out to me another of David's masks in that scene
but we haven't spotted the Mornac yet.

I've had this mysterious latex bust in my collection for over ten years and am still unsure of its provenance.
The face is said to be that of the Phantom from Universal's Man of a Thousand Faces (1957) but the
neck and ears were added on much later. Its only other known appearance was in a Thriller episode called
"The Purple Room" which I haven't seen yet. The bust remains unfinished pending verification of its identity.

I'm not sure if I'm guessing or remembering...?

As pertains to DPS legend and lore, I'd rate your guesses over most anyone else's.

So it's the "prototype makeup", not the screen-used final? That settles some of the confusion.

There exists a companion piece to this Cagney Phantom, said to be even more rare.
Portions of it may have been incorporated directly onto DP's retail version of the
"Calendar" Hunchback. Thank goodness someone bothered to preserve such artifacts

I scored a first edition CREETON way back then, reportedly cast from the master mold >

Said mold was beset with problems from the start but were ultimately mended, the character
becoming a great favorite of its creator Ed Edmunds and collaborator Jordu Schell.

I only ever owned one of the masks pictured on this page. Can you guess which one?

According to Lee Lambert's book, Ed Edmunds was disappointed with his SYCRON character.
However, I think it's one of the scariest aliens he ever created! I got mine in June 1982,
first year of issue >

It was catalogued for another two years afterwards, then vanished until being resculpted for
Distortions' "Resurrection Series". To me, it never needed any such makeover. That original
version is quite horrific enough.

a cow skull, a pterodactyl, and Giger's Alien >

Last catalogued in the 1980s, I scored my first one (seen above) in June 2008. Ten years later
I got a copy from the metallic edition created exclusively for attendees of MaskFest >

This and the Sycron are hardly more than fossil skulls. 'Makes me wonder what a "fleshed out" version of each would look like.
That might make for an intriguing new mask series from Distortions ...

Can't get enough of those Distortions. Back in the early 1980s they secured licensing to market
wearable products from the sci fi classic ALIEN. The T-shirt was just amazing >

Around the same time, full sized castings of the adult ALIEN mask were also catalogued >

from the screen-used stunt head shown here >

There are several Distortions Unltd masks which never appeared in any catalogues. Among them is
The Evil ZEEZOID, so named because it was produced exclusively for a chain of magic shops called
Zeezo's. Mine retailed for $100 which was quite expensive for a rubber mask back in June 1980.

I had only just started collecting masks from independent artists when this ad first appeared

page, my favorite was the 808 MUMMY >

to wear but I liked it as a departure from previous versions DPS had marketed over the past
decade or so >

I bought those from Dennis Druktenis back around 2002. I can't remember what the Shock Monster cost (probably around $30-$40), but the DPS reissue Dracula was $50 and the DPS reissue Mole People was $40. They have the original tags but no boxes. The DPS Creature mask I bought from him in the same order was $100 and came with the box.

Those cups are from the set of 20  8 oz. Monster cups given away by 7-Eleven in 1976/1977 with the purchase of a drink (Slurpee). They featured cartoony generic monsters and look pretty cool. I like the artwork. Here's a pic of a few I lifted off the interwebbings:

Cool!

Wow, 70 bucks for the Shock Monster. It seems like I gave less than that for it, but I could be wrong. Maybe he cut the price for one of his "Scarehouse" sales. Anyway, I'm sure about the prices I paid him for the DPS reissues- $40 for Mole People, $50 for Dracula, $50 for Metaluna Mutant, and $100 for the Creature. They all came new with tags and the Creature came in the stylized box. Back around that same time I ordered the Kelly Mann reissue of Verne Langdon's Zombie mask from an ad in the back of Scary Monsters. It seems like it was around $140 but I may not be remembering that right. I do remember it being somewhat expensive but I had to have it because I loved the cover of the 1972 Creepy Annual and seeing those Langdon Zombie mask ads from the early '70s. I received #15/30.

I used to buy monster junk from Dennis all the time. I bought a copy of all of his mags, even the limited issues, and bought a lot of stuff at great prices from his "scarehouse" sales. I met him at the 2001 Monster Bash. I have Scary Monsters junk all over the house. I quit buying the mag when it changed ownership though, so I have everything up to issue 100. That was about the time I quit buying new monster mags, except for The Creeps, and now Warrant's new title Vampiress Carmilla.

It's a fun mask, but it should have green highlights on the boils and oozing sores for the chlorophyll poisoning. For TOTS prices though it's pretty cool.

I'm a huge Blood Island fan, having seen Brides Of Blood and Mad Doctor Of Blood Island on Shock Theater (Chattanooga) back in the '70s, uncut.  ;D  Of course the Beast Of Blood or Chlorophyll Monster looked a little different in the movie Beast Of Blood than he did in Mad Doctor Of Blood Island, and it was a totally different monster in Brides, but it's all part of the Blood Island Trilogy. No direct continuity between Brides and Mad Doctor (except for Hemisphere Pictures, John Ashley, and the Island). But Beast is a true sequel to Mad Doctor storywise.

The forty-year-old latex was pretty flimsy so I reinforced it from the inside with insulation tape.
It seems to work well for this purpose with one side really sticky, the other a bendable foil.
There's a layer of foam in-between so it's like a poor man's foam-fill but stiff enough to smooth
out any ripples in the rubber.

Great looking copy of that mask, Sir!  As I recall, Bill Malone sculpted that Spock from scratch, as opposed to using the Nimoy life cast as he did for the '75 version.  The old Spock, like the Captain Kirk mask, was kind of a tight fit for most people's heads.  I think Bill also sculpted the Vulcan, and Jim Leonard sculpted the Klingon.  Congrats on having such a nice piece!

Folklore has it that if a Metaluna Mutant pops up and sees its own reflection, we're in for a nuclear winter!

Relax, I just made that up to scare you but what better lead-in to my discussion of the DPS MUTANT masks I've owned over the years.

First came this one in the early 1970s. It made several appearances in my amateur monster movies of the period >

Later in the decade, another turned up for sale at a Hollywood memorabilia shop. I promptly purchased it, together with the old style claws >

I had a third copy in the early '80s but could only find one old photo of it and not a very good one at that >

Meanwhile, the character had been resculpted for its 1975 re-release from Post Studios. This "Malonian" MUTANT was
not in production for more than a year or two. I had a really nice one for a while which I'd customized with veinage in the eyes >

When Dr Shocker dissolved his House of Horror some years ago, I was fortunate to acquire his exceptional copy of the "Malonian" version.
The paint is all mid-1970s factory stock, no custom touches but for some yellow fabric I used to seal its eye slits >

(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/46/shockermutant.jpg)   (https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/684/blumutantclaws.png)

Twenty years ago Post Studios was marketing their spectacular "Calendar" reissue. The edition was cast using molds developed from
Universal's original. It's quite a privilege owning a movie costume element from 1955's This Island Earth. The head came partially
foam-filled with shiny plastic lenses in both eyes >

Of course, the ultimate Mutant collectible would be a casting direct from Universal's staff shop mold which Post Studios had custody of
since the 1960s. Availability has been extremely limited over the decades and seems to coincide with periods during which DPS is
licensed to market their smaller retail versions. I scored mine in 1999 while production on the "Calendar" reissue was in full swing.
Years later, movie mold claws were offered as an independent edition. It makes for an impressive set but requires extra display space.
Included is a photo of the head with a fellow collector, no small man himself, to give you a sense of its enormity >

I added more Trick Or Treat Studios masks to my collection:

I had to purchase the Hammer Mummy from an eBay seller since it was sold out on the TOTS website. Thanks to David Lady and his "Creepy Cheapies" episode for making this mask a must-have for me.

I also ordered the mask TOTS called the "Blue Banshee" (based on the Gayle House Ghoul) but I received a refund and the explanation that it wasn't available. I checked the TOTS website and there was no sign of the Blue Banshee. I couldn't even find an eBay listing for it. Weird. It's like it just slipped out of existence. Very Twilight Zone-esque.  ???

House of Horror Studios didn't create their FLY masks as exact likenesses of 1958's movie makeup.
They may have offered as many as five different versions but I only ever owned the first three.
Their 1980 premiere model featured separately inserted feelers and vacuum-formed plastic eye lenses,
all for only $38 retail >

As classic sci fi, I respect George Langelaan's story so much that there just had to be some representation
of his title character in my collection. I'll buzz you with the next two HoHS mask versions in a few days.

'Great FLY mask, Doh, even better since you added the appendages.

Version #2 of House of Horror's FLY mask took wing in 1981. Gone were the plastic lenses
but its newly designed eyes gave off an opalescent effect. It was also a full overhead mask
while the previous version had a fabric fur hood.

Nice sculpt and paint, but this thing is stupidly small! It's a half mask with a strap that's supposed to hold it in place -- but I can barely get it on my head. I'd swear it was made for a child. The latex is somewhat thin, too. I'll hold onto it, but honestly not really worth the price.

Doh, that Creepshow "puppet" is scary as hell. Since it doesn't fit you well, it should make a great Halloween prop.
Either that or give it a decent burial.

As to your Fly outfit, seeing the whole ensemble reminds me of the story's deeper message of "science gone wrong".
It could happen to any of us!

Later in 1981, House of Horror Studios released their third and what must've been super-deluxe FLY mask.
It featured extra appendages, more hair tufts, vacuum-formed plastic eyes, plus an extended neck bib >

I remember there being a fourth HoHS Fly produced sometime afterwards but I never got a copy. It wasn't until 1986
that HoH's BUGG mask infested my collection which, although clearly insectoid, was not a Fly >

Pablo Picasso might've saluted the Ed French Studios for creating this wacky mask.
It's been known variously as "Disorganized", "Mixed up face", and "Geek Maggot Bingo"
after a movie in which it appeared. I can't recall where I first saw the above portrait
but it circulated through genre magazines of the early 1980s. By summer '83 I had

independent mask-making.

As a pre-teen kid in the 1960s and desperate to own a Don Post Studios GORILLA mask,
I actually made a facsimile using pastels on construction paper to fill the void on my
monster room shelf >

It wasn't until the early 1970s that the genuine article came along. I had the hands and feet too,
plus my seamstress Auntie stitched together a shaggy ape suit for me.

My mask soon began falling apart from constant use/abuse. Thankfully, the character remained
in production at DPS and available for sale at my three favorite shops through the mid '70s.

I got a second copy while the getting was good ...

... and so for a time nearly fifty years ago, I had two original DPS GORILLA masks >

Both have long since been consigned to ape mask eternity but I still have a really nice copy of the Retro Line version,

Having never been an avid reader of Creepy or Eerie comics, I mainly recognized the two horror hosts
as really cool Don Post masks. They haven't been catalogued together since the 1970s >

All my favorite shops carried them back then, displayed singly and as a team. Can you make out that price tag? Only $14.95!

They were produced with the same quality as DP's high-end masks but retailed for less than half as much.
By summer of 1975, I'd adopted my first pair >

Last Sunday I scored a few masks from the estate sale of our late friend Gory Glenn.
One was his ToTS Beast of Blood which I now consider one of the top three scariest masks in my collection!

Back in the 1990s Paper Magic Group offered a line of masks depicting Universal's classic monsters >

Glenn had the good taste to acquire a few of them including The Mummy, my favorite of the series.
His copy now resides in my collection. That thing on top that looks like a visor is actually its attached header card
showing the Universal Monsters logo, care and safety info, and the retail price: only $14.99 >

(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/924/xFWN3j.jpg)       (https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/924/VVKSUz.jpg)

There was one more mask score from the weekend, related to the above character, which I think was
one of Glenn's prized pieces. I can't reveal it just yet because it's getting sent off for a custom finish.
Once completed, I'll check back in to scare you with it!

This dinky little DEVIL has always been my favorite character from Don Post's 300 line of
thinly cast full-overhead masks. I don't know if production dates back as far as the 1960s
but I scored my first copy in February 1973, likely because it reminded me of that tumescent
Pazuzu statue seen in "The Exorcist".

Versions of it remained in production all through the 1970s and '80s. Back then, they were easy
to spot in novelty shops everywhere >

Glad you're back doing reviews, jupiter!

Fun mask, but I wish they would've gone all-out in the likeness department. Also, what an odd choice to make the face tiny and have you see out the hairline. Still, nice review.

That mask would've definitely caught my eye if I'd ever seen it in a Halloween store.
You're fortunate to have found one, jupiter2. Thanks for the fun review. Whoever conceived it
for DPS must've known and loved "Trilogy of Terror". That movie haunted my dreams for years
after first watching it. A dealer I knew had a replica of the Zuni doll for sale at a convention
but he had trouble all weekend getting it to stay standing on his table. At one point, some fans
were looking at it as it fell over and they all scattered in a panic, screaming "it's alive, it's alive!"

So here it is, the third of my new scores from Gory Glenn's estate sale: a foamed master casting of
The MUMMY, released as a licensed wearable mask by Paper Magic Group in the 1990s >

The existence of an unpainted polyfoam-filled master is very unusual outside of a production facility.
They're meant for in-house use only and typically cast from first generation (master) molds.
The mold itself was likely destroyed after this posterity master was cast. Today it's all that remains
of the sculptor's original vision >

When deciding on a finish for it, I chose the PMG catalog image to submit as reference ...
but that blazing blue eye had to go >

Instead, I asked my painter to recreate the blacked-out glare of Kharis as depicted in 1940's
"The Mummy's Hand". It came out super creepy, dark as the tomb itself >

Mounted on a custom display base it's now quite a show piece, all I could ever want in
a Universal MUMMY monster. Maybe you'll see it at one of my convention exhibits someday.

E X C E L L E N T design choices (!!)

Sculpture-wise, this foam-filled master casting has maybe even More subtle, delicate details (*e.g.: the slicked-back hairline) than the Don Post Calendar classic mask!

Never could I have imagined that Don Post's 800 line SKULL mask would one day become
a sought-after collectible, this by way of its appearance in the Halloween movie series.

Long before that, they were fairly easy to get at retail shops since they only cost $8.95 >

I scored my first one in February 1973. Being cast in durable vinyl, it looks as good now
as it did then >

I got a VERMILLION SKULL at the same time. It's still my favorite of all DP Skull masks >

Four years later, DPS catalogued their premiere line of luminous masks. The old style Skull was
first to be developed for the series. The other characters followed soon after >

I bought three of them including GHOST SKULL. They were super cool and glowed really bright!

For 1998 DPS released something called BLOOD SKULL, adapted from the old molds
but not to be confused with the earlier "Vermillion Skull" because its eyes are withered >

Nowadays the generic white SKULL can be had from Trick or Treat Studios,
still looking as good as DP's originals >

My favorite SKULL mask is currently Illusive Concepts' version. I bid on and won
a master casting which came up for auction back in July 2013. This must be Mario
Chiodo's work since it's sculpted so exquisitely >

I've never owned all of The Halloween Society's mask editions but I wouldn't have wanted to miss out on NOSFERATU.
It only ever appeared in one fanzine ad back in 1989:

I wonder where copy #1 is now. Last I saw, it was in the Ackerman Archives >

As promised in the ad, all copies included a chunk of clay from the original sculpture.
I got an ear. FJA got the face >

They often leave me trying to imagine some backstory into the characters: what evil deeds
they've committed, the dark worlds they inhabit, and especially who I would like to scare

Funny that you should mention that. I didn't think of it until after I completed filming, and wondered if I was the only one who didn't realize it! I would have referenced it in the video, if I had noticed sooner. It does fit in with the Zagone/Be Something fondness of pun-naming some of their masks.

This being my 666th post, we just have to discuss something demonic: Don Post's 900 line DEMON !
I've owned five copies since its debut in their 1976 catalog >

In January of that year, I scored a first edition copy. This is the first pic I ever took of it >

DEMON was my favorite of all those early 900 series characters.

For one shot, I even recreated the DPS catalog image with shaggy tunic and chains >

It was rather thinly cast and only survived a few more years in my possession, counting the abuse
it endured in my amateur monster movies of the 1970s >

(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/534/beastdemon.jpg)       (https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/291/bonniepronedark.jpg)       (https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/800x600q90/535/demonloomstwo.jpg)

It wasn't until 2008 that I scored a second vintage copy through the generosity of Eric Austin at The HMA/MaskFest >

Two years later I got Dr Shocker's personal copy from his House of Horrors, a 1987 version with
alternate paint scheme. It was only in fair condition but these original reds are really scarce >

During 2015/2016 I scored my last two copies in rapid succession,
the first being a 2001 Retro line reissue ...

... but the best was yet to come: within a year, a special collector's edition was made available with
custom Tharp finish! Mine was painted up like my 1987 original red with those creepy blank eyes.
After this, there'll be no need for any more >

I've finally got enough "DEMONs running all through me"!

I've always regarded the monster from this movie as one of
the scariest-looking faces of the 1950s >

As a kid I often confused it with the monster from "War of the Colossal Beast"
even though both are seen clearly and frequently in their respective movies.
Any remaining confusion vanished forever once independent artists began
creating masks of the characters. There's no better way to get familiar with
a monster than while it's right in your face! Come October 1994 I scored my
first CYCLOPS mask, created by one of the fine sculptors at Alvarez Wax Models >

I wore it to a few masquerades and it stood unchallenged in my collection
for twelve years until VXXFX unleashed their version. Upon getting one, I
resolved never to wear it but keep it on prominent display in pristine condition
at all times ... and so it remains to this day >

which debuted in their 1976 catalog >

I actually have a shot of prototypes taken at Post Studios' R & D lab from around that time.

My first edition copy appears on film for the first time, January 1976 >

DPS added hair to their edition, reportedly to avert copyright challenges
from the producers of "7th Voyage" >

The character remained in production for another year then vanished, later to be
reissued as a resized version in 1986 >

I never got one until long after it was re-reissued for the 2000 Retro Line. Oddly enough,
that catalog page was not included at "The Blood-Curdling Blog of Monster Masks" where
I do much of my research. I've reproduced it here for you >

The prototype looked awesome, seen here at DPS in October 1999 >

My copy is custom finished, hairless like the movie original, and remains with me to this day.

Long-time readers of Famous Monsters magazine have got to remember seeing this
horrific deathshead in its pages. If memory serves, one early issue features a pictorial
of its creation from start to finish. I always thought it would make a terror-ific mask
but the few attempts I've seen over the years came up lacking. That was before
Death Studios released their version in the late 1990s >

The exact year must've been '99 since I scored my first edition copy that September.
I found a pair of matching hands and wore it to one wild masquerade party, vowing
afterwards to preserve it for display purposes exclusively. Today, it remains one
of the scariest masks I've ever owned >

^ Here's a new score from earlier this month. I don't know much about its history
since someone else owned it before me but it's a great likeness of Imhotep
created by Daniel Horne, polyfoam-filled and autographed on the inside. I only
own one other mask by him and really should have more. It was a sad day for
collectors when he retired from mask making some years ago.

Nice! It looks like a legit death mask.

(No pun intended. It's a seriously good sculpt.)

A studio like that could inspire any well-rounded monsterkid to greatness. How do you keep those
vintage Topstones in shape? I'd expect them to be falling to pieces by now. Thanks for the tour.

Yes, I spend most of my time in there!
Don't do much with the Topstones, other than keeping them out of direct sunlight. I know some people keep their masks packed away in darkness, but for me, I feel that life is short and I would rather be surrounded by the things that I love while I'm here.  :)
