Title: Does anyone know the artists who painted these horror film novelization covers?
Post by: James Burrell on March 18, 2019, 11:14:46 PM
Hi again everyone,

Thanks to everyone to responded to my recent post about James Bama, I really appreciate it.

In addition to Bama, I'm also trying to pin down the names of other artists who have painted/designed covers for other vintage paperback horror movie and TV-show novelizations/tie-in novels. Right now, I am trying to track down who painted the following covers:

DRACULA (First paperback edition from Pocket Books #452, with Bela Lugosi-like artwork on front cover)
HALLOWEEN II by Jack Martin (Dennis Etchison)
DRESSED TO KILL by Campbell Black and Brian De Palma
THE FOG by Dennis Etchison (USA edition, published by Bantam Books)
THE FIRST/SECOND HAMMER HORROR FILM OMNIBUS by John Burke (both 1960s and mid-70s reprints)
THE BRIDES OF DRACULA by Dean Owen (original 1960 edition published by Monarch)
ASYLUM by William Johnston
THE VAULT OF HORROR by Jack Oleck
THE WICKER MAN by Robin Hardy and Anthony Shaffer
IT'S ALIVE! by Richard Woodley
IT LIVES AGAIN! by James Dixon
THE OMEGA MAN (I Am Legend) by Richard Matheson
FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VI: JASON LIVES by Simon Hawke
COMA by Robin Cook (artwork also used for the movie poster)

If anyone here knows of any of the artists who worked on these covers and could please let me know, I would greatly appreciate it. I would have attached images, but I am unfortunately having some trouble doing this right now.

Thanks again so much!

-James

You'd get a much better response if you took the trouble to post these pictures. That way some of us might perhaps recognize a specific artist's style and venture an educated guess.

Hmmmm.

The cover of The Brides of Dracula could have been executed by the fellow who drew the signed picture below:

Dracula's face is almost the same in both pictures. What gives me pause though is that I don't see any strong similarities in the women from the top pic to the other. For one thing they're drawn with far more slender arms in the bottom picture.

I don't think those two Dracula images look anything alike. The second is by Alex Horley, who has a very distinctive (slightly Frazetta-ish) style. I have a large poster of that very image!

I found online an auction for what claims to be the original art for that Brides of Dracula cover, and it just says it is by an "American Illustrator."

Read on. It says it's by Dean Owen.

Dean Owen is the author of the book not the artist.

Dean Owen is the author of the book not the artist.

The sentence is a bit confusing. Add a couple of commas and it's the artist.

"Original paperback book cover illustration, for The Brides of Dracula, by Dean Owen"

Hi Hepcat,

Thanks for the response. Yes, I intended to post photos promptly, but got dragged away from that due to other deadlines.

I do appreciate you posting the artwork for the Brides of Dracula novelization by Dean Owen and the Dracula and his brides pic below that. Will post images of the other books shortly.

Thanks very much!

Hi everyone,

Here are images for some of the book covers in which I'm attempting to locate the artist's name and other info. As these were sourced online, a few images may not be of the best quality. I will post the remaining images either tomorrow or Saturday.

Thank you very much for looking, and for any assistance you can provide!

Well Iím glad to see the cover art to The Fog posted above😁 I went to find my copy when this post started and somehow it has disappeared. A lot like my car keys, the pesky thing seems to have gotten up and wandered away, lol

Hi Monsterscud,

Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure, it could be him.

I wrote a piece on Tom Chantrell for Rue Morgue a long time ago, but I don't remember these paperback covers coming up in my research. In addition to his movie poster artwork (Hammer, Star Wars, etc.), he did do the artwork for a large, early '70s reference book, A Pictorial History of Horror Films, by Denis Gifford.

Thanks again!

Sometimes the illustrator is noted on the verso of the title page or the back cover. Unfortunately not all publishers do this so having to search for a signature on the cover If any) or find folks who are familiar with the artwork...i.e. UMAers in this post, who come to the rescue! Love all the covers posted here! The two Hammer omnibuses look like interesting reads.
