Title: "Horrified"; a new Universal Monsters Board Game
Post by: TheMadScientist on February 15, 2019, 06:30:52 PM
A Universal Monsters Board Game called "Horrified" is coming out this August. Looks pretty cool, based on the limited information provided. Details here: https://io9.gizmodo.com/horrified-board-game-brings-all-the-classic-universal-m-1832534827

I'm okay with it.  They look like Monster Squad monsters.  Definitely better than the stock art!  I'd like to own this.

"Horrified"?  No.

More like nauseated.

"Horrified"?  No.

Because of the art?

Yep.

Makes me wonder what the  “high-quality sculpted miniatures” of Frankenstein, the Bride of Frankenstein, the Wolf Man, the Mummy, the Invisible Man, and the Creature from the Black Lagoon" will look like.

Anyone seen pictures of those?

I haven't. I think the game was just announced not too long ago, so there's not a ton of information out about it.

I'd have to see the game pieces first. If they're generic, not for me.

If the box art is generic, the figures will probably look even worse. Look at their version of the Frankenstein monster (on the box). It looks more like Rami Malek.

I wish Monsterville had continued beyond Halloween with stuff like this.

I wonder why they stopped making Universal items?  The product they had at Target was popular and seemed to sell pretty well.

Yeah, those and the Mego Dracula and Nosferatu were the last reasonably priced monster collectibles. I guess you have to choose between crap and exorbitant "statues".

This video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5fDirPI5e8 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5fDirPI5e8) has a look at the game so far. Jump to the 1:13 mark (it also has some details on a Jaws game immediately after they show the Universal Monsters game, in case you are interested in that too). Looks fun to me. I'll probably grab this when it's released, as I play quite a few board games with friends, and this will be perfect for the fall/Halloween season.

Thanks! That Jaws game looks promising.

The board design looks a lot more interesting than the box art.  I'd really like to see the final games pieces.

Note the little figures in the third picture.  Looks like a Green Bride and Tan Mummy at the top.  Maybe a Green Frank in the lower half and a Black Figure to the left of him.

That's what they look like to me, also. The "black" one looks brown, to me, and is probably the WM.

Poking around the Internet, I found these:

Horrified - Board Game - Ravensburger - 2019 - Game Pieces - Dracula & Creature

Judging by the color, I'd say these are prototype casts.  But, that is a handsome Creature sculpt.

Whatcha think, Mike?

Judging by the size of the playing cards, they are really tiny.

Anyone buying this game?

All I really want is the Frankenstein Game Piece.

I'll probably have to wait until someone spills coffee on their game board and tries to sell the game pieces on eBay.

Anyone seen anything about the retail price of the game?

Dumb me.  it was in the first post:

"Horrified: Universal Monsters will hit shelves August 1, and it’ll retail for $34.99."

     $35 ÷ 5 Game Pieces = $7 per piece.    (I would pay $7 for just the Frank.)

it all boils down to what The Wolf Man looks like. Drac and Creechie look great!

The box lid shows 7 monsters:  Dracula, Mummy, Frankenstein, Invisible Man, Bride, Wolf Man and Creature.  It also states that it is for up to "5 players".

We have already seen what look like 5 game pieces: Dracula, Mummy, Frankenstein, Bride and Creature.

Maybe there won't be an Invisible Man or a Wolf Man.  ?

(If they do make all 7 monsters on the lid, that brings the per monster price down to $5 each.)

I've found quite a few places saying we will get all 7 monsters for the game - but, I've been looking everywhere I can think of, and NOBODY has pictures!

I hope they come up with 7 different colors for them.  I think the Bride should be White, Frank and Creature could be two different shades of Green, Mummy looks good in the Tan we've seen, Wolf Man should be Brown, Dracula Black, Invisible Man Grey?

I hope the lack of pictures doesn't mean they are still negotiating with Universal for final approvals.

C'mon, guys!  This is supposed to be available on August 1st.

Invisible Man Grey?

Clear.

Clear.

Yeah.

I was just trying to avoid 2 whites.  I figured off-white bandages.   Clear or cream color would be good.

It has always bothered me that a bandage-clad Invisible One is done in clear.  If he's clear, he should be naked.

EVERYBODY LOOK FOR PICTURES!

He made some invisible sheep and knitted some clothes with their wool.

I was worried we weren't going to get a Dracula since he seemed to be a character you don't play as, so I am glad to see a sculpt for him.   Not sure we'll get an Invisible Man.

I was also concerned about Drac, since he is not named in a number of the posts I've seen while looking for pictures.

I was glad to discover the picture of him with Creature.

I'm really hoping this is released without too many changes from what they've shown. Looks like a ton of fun! Between this, the new Universal Monsters Funko minis and all the stuff from Super 7, I'm going to need to start saving.

What's up with this game?

The few pictures I found were on one site only - and not all on the same site.  It is almost the middle of June; this I supposed to be released in August; no one has a good set of pictures - not even the Ravensburger site - and no one is taking pre-orders.

So...  What's up?

Not a good sign. Unless things change, I wouldn't hold out much hope for it.

Unless I misread, the 1 August release date is at Gen Con. I'm not sure they're promising that as a street date for retail, but the game is on at least one wholesale site I'm aware of. Ravensburger often seems to partner with retail (Target being the big one). While it might not ship to the public on 1 August, I wouldn't worry about not seeing it for sale during the Fall/Halloween season.

Oh.  So that's why no pictures - they are saving the big reveal for the show?

OK, that makes sense.

Here's a site that says they are taking pre-orders for $32.49:

https://www.coolstuffinc.com/p/277231 (https://www.coolstuffinc.com/p/277231)

Note:  Don't know when this was originally posted, but it is showing the $44.99 MSRP that was being quoted about 3 months ago.  Now everyone seems to be agreed that it will be $34.99.
