I like superheroes. Marvel and DC. When all these films first started, I was like "at last!". Now---it seems that this is all Hollywood makes. Suddenly everyone is a fan. I was fairly impressed with Marvel until phase 3. Excluding Civil War and GotG2 (which I liked a lot), the newer films have just left me going "whatever".
Doctor Strange was ok, but honestly....if ever a character should have been spooky, and not comical....its Dr. Strange. The comedy for comedy's sake left me annoyed.
Spiderman Homecoming was a disaster. He was great in Civil War, but he's Iron Man Jr. in this film, who happens to spin webs and go to high school instead of flying and being a multi billionarie.
Black Panther. Saw it last night. Liked his character far more in Civil War. He is basically a Wakandan Iron man in this. His suit is suddenly the main part of his ability to battle....same as with Spiderman. Just as Spidey was turned into Iron Man Jr.., T'Challa is turned into Black Tony Stark/James Bond. It changed the character a lot in my opinion.
I think these flicks are turning into Iron Man clones, and losing what makes the characters individually entertaining. Dr. Strange should be anything but funny. Dark, mysterious, spooky even....but not Starlord or Tony Stark.
Unfortunately, if I tell anyone I didn't like these three films they immediately start calling me names, or accusing you of not being a "true fan", or the default adjective of "hater".....which I don't understand at all. Especially considering I read these comics years before most of the current cinematic patrons were even born.
Maybe I am just getting burned out on all this junk. I didn't think the new Star Wars was all the rage everyone made it out to be either. It wasn't a nightmare altogether, but there was a lot of stuff that left me scratching my head as to why it was inserted in the first place. :'( :'(
I enjoyed Homecoming, they nailed the personality of the character (Toby was a great but they rushed the character into college; Andrew Garfield was a snarky douche with a bunch of Ultimate Spider-Man elements, definitely not the Amazing Spider-Man I knew) but unfortunately his evolution was rushed probably do to wanting the character to be better equipped for Infinity War. Dr. Strange had comedy but I don't think it was from the character himself, with one liners and the same for his appearance in Ragnorok. Haven't seen Black Panther yet but definitely looking forward to it.

I was looking forward to all of them. I didn't leave with my expectations met.

I'm right with you Anton. Btw, where oh where is Submariner??? I grew up in the 60's like a lot of us on here, and he was one of the main Marvel superheroes. Even a Saturday morning cartoon to boot. How can they not make a Namor movie, but make an Antman movie? Who the hell is Antman??? I'm pissed.

I liked Antman.....I didn't even mind it being played with some humor. He's been around awhile. Not as long as Submariner. Subby may be tied up in one of the other company/ licensee snafus. Especially since they made him a mutant and affiliated him with the X-Men. I heard he was being talked about though. I like him as much if not better than Aquaman. They should both fight Cthulhu,lol.

Subby was my favorite superhero when I was a kid, so naturally I'm disappointed he hasn't hit the big screen yet. Maybe, like you say, Antman was good. I just have trouble taking a superhero serious with a name like that.lol

There have been a few Sub-Mariner references sprinkled in the MCU. "Iron Man 2: Nick Fury's map of hot spots clearly shows activity in the Atlantic ocean, and fans got excited to see Namor the Sub-Mariner. Marvel's plotted out the next five years of movies, and Namor's name still hasn't shown up. I think there was some kind of under water city shown during a Stark Expo. in one of the films too. The recent change at Disney's Tower of Terror to Gaurdians of the Galaxy includes some artifacts found at the bottom of Earth's ocean but "very little is known about the civilization that created them".
Up until 2015 or so Universal held the rights to the character, which they purchased in 2001.
I've been a little hesitant about Phase Three films as well. I grew up reading the original material too and have found the "updates" to costumes and powers a little unsettling. At times the humor in these recent films has felt forced instead of genuinely funny. I haven't seen Black Panther yet but I'm hopeful it will play like Don Mcgregor's run in the comics.
The discussion of a Submariner film in this thread reminded me of the 1950's effort to produce a TV show based on the character. It never went anywhere but if it had Submariner would be the second (after Captain America?) marvel hero to make the leap to film. One can only wonder...

My complaint has been the constant re-telling of origins. JUST LET UNCLE BEN GO. Crikeys! Does EVERY Spidey film NEED that constant irritating reference point? I did enjoy HOMECOMING but, how many films will he be held back and regurgitated thru high school? Will 9 more high-school Peter Parker films finally get it done? Two more? Five more?!!
IRON MAN has been somewhat more progressive although Daddykins still isn't getting left out. "You're not the man your father was-!!"
FF... gag, oh please... X-MEN, etc, just how many more times will we relive concentration camps and "my old friend" re-tellings? Can they possibly just MOVE FORWARD on all of these?!! I've always been far more of a fan of Beast and Cyclops, even Scott than the erector-set Wolverine. He's manufactured, not born. And for THOR, I really miss wobbly Dr. Blake and his cane... SHAZAM!! Oh wait, that brings up a different superhero-!
I get tired of the filmmakers acting like they have control of us and demand we forget all other films and only reference theirs. "Ours is better because we have better CGI..." Uh huh... yeah... wait in 10 or 20 years and pop off. Peter Jackson's KONG is pretty slick looking, but 1933's KONG will be the masterpiece that all film-students will latch onto.
I get so tired of the re-tellings. New versions. New twists. Honestly, The Professor made just as much progress repairing the SS MINNOW as Marvel Movies do by the constant retellings. rearrangings, etc.
Well previously Marvel had no control on Spidey, X-Men, Fantastic Four or Blade. I would have loved another origin of Peter Parker with Marvel behind the helm and as far as high school goes; that's where the character belongs...at least for several films.

I read comics as a kid-during a comics reading nostalgia binge a couple years back. Being a Spider-man fan I even sent a letter to Steve Ditko, but the movies, especially by Disney-Marvel, I gave up on them after Avengers 2. One of these days I will probably watch Ant Man and Civil War but I am in no hurry.
They have some great ideas for FX action scenes but most of the time make them forgettable.
By contrast I never get bored with Robocop or Superman the movie.
I watched the Adventures of Captain Marvel 1941 recently-that should be the template for doing a good comic book superhero movie. No fluff, mostly action and fun.
With all the modern fx, they forget how to make them fun.
Beyond that, I think there desperately needs to be new media companies offering something different in design and philosophy from the big companies which have so much money that domestic audience profits do not appear to matter.
I spend much of my time watching pre-90s movies for that reason.
There's an amusing mid 60s Italian superhero film The Fantastic Argoman which is worth checking out.
Have to watch that Turkish film with an evil Spider-man one of these days. 3 Dev Adam.
