Title: The Fantastic Ben Cooper Character Costumes!
Post by: Hepcat on June 02, 2017, 10:08:37 AM
It seems that Ben Cooper produced more costumes based on comic and cartoon characters than did any other company!

Here are a couple of pictures of the Ben Cooper Superman costume:

The face sculpt of the mask is rather good, and the costume isn't too bad either.

Here for comparison's sake is a scan of one of my Superman comics:

Ben Cooper costumes are cool.  Some of the hero masks alone bring hundreds.  That old supply and demand rule .

With the Wonder Woman movie now hitting the big screen, a look at the various iterations of the Ben Cooper Wonder Woman costume would be timely. Here's the mask from an early version:

It's a bit too round faced and thus bland. Not very pretty overall. The mask was improved in later releases:

There is no doubt that Batman is way cool. This mask and costume though is substantially less so:

The mask included with the Ben Cooper costume made the Flash look particularly gritty:

No, sadly at present I don't own any costumes at all. Maybe someday but they're not an immediate priority.

Very low priority for me. I hardly had any store-bought costumes when I would TorT as a kid. If I tripped over some with nice packaging for cheap I would buy them, but that's about the only way. I love Halloween stuff, but the actual kid's costumes not so much.

I get more picky as time goes by, what with my diminishing space and the ever higher prices for collectibles.

To me the appeal of these Ben Cooper and Collegeville costumes arises from the following factors:

1. I remember them hanging from the ceiling at the Kresge store in downtown London in the early sixties.

2. They're gaudy to beat hell! Gaudy is a praiseworthy characteristic in my book.

3. The availability of so many semi obscure characters including these:

The Fly a.k.a. Fly Man

Doctor Solar

Beany

Cecil the Sea Serpent

Bucky O'Hare

Buzzy the Crow

Hot Stuff

Courageous Cat

Felix the Cat

Bullwinkle

Batfink

Secret Squirrel

Atom Ant

4. They're all about Halloween, a holiday that's beyond cool!

The negatives though are many and serious:

1. I never had any of these costumes as a kid. Nor were there any I specifically coveted. They therefore weren't really a part of my life as a kid which reduces the nostalgia factor for me dramatically.

2. To display them properly by letting them hang would take up a lot of space. Moreover getting them back in the box folded properly would be a pain in the ass. They can of course be left in the boxes but unlike model kits and board games, the boxes are at best semi-generic. In fact, most of the boxes are pretty boring.

3. Viewed through adult eyes, many of the costumes don't do the underlying character justice, e.g. the superhero costumes I've been posting, and as such leave a lot to be desired.

4. The thought of buying what's in effect clothing that could very well have been worn by some kid strikes me as just plain yucky.

Here's a post I made almost five years ago:

Periodically we must all stop to smell the roses and appreciate what we actually already have!

At some point though I'd like to get into collecting these things:

1. Vending machine cards and premiums from the sixties. Bubble gum from vending machines was a big part of my life as a kid and vending machine cards are very easy to store in my existing card sheets and binders.

2. Cereal boxes and premiums from the fifties through the seventies. Cereal was also a very big part of my young life. They'd present storage/display problems though so for the time being I'm limiting myself to collecting the football, baseball and hockey cards that were printed on the back of some of these cereals.

3. HO Lionel train cars. My buddy had an HO Lionel train set and I marvelled at the operating cars that were pictured in the catlogue. I even tried to save up for a set. The cars would also be easy to display/store in the same cabinets in which I keep my model kits.

4. Carded rack toys like the Space Aliens in this thread and the MPC Pop-Tops and Weird Monsters. The toys I had in my very early years never went beyond anything more elaborate than a random assortment of these little figurines, mainly knights and soldiers. They'd be tough to display though.

5. Magic Slates. I liked them as a kid and they were made over the years with dozens and dozens of cool licensed characters. They'd be easy to store with the major problem being that I know of no catalogue that summarizes the ones that were made.

6. Roalex sliding puzzles like this one:

Once again, I liked them as a kid and they featured so many cool and exciting characters.

7. Halloween costumes. I always admired the ones on display hanging from the ceiling of the Kresge and Woolworth stores in downtown London but I never even tried to get my mother to buy me one since I knew that she would consider such a one use purchase to be shamelessly profligate. But display would present a real problem so this collecting area is on the far back burner.

8. Wacky Wobblers. So many cool characters! And easy to store/display in a cabinet. But it's still so entirely open ended since they're still being made. I prefer collecting things with a finite as opposed to open end.

I'd currently reorder the list as follows:

1. HO Lionel train cars. Since I already have a small collection of around ten of the ones from the fifties and sixties, I'm moving this category to the top of my list.

2. Vending machine premiums from the fifties to the seventies, in particular the display cards. These can be stored very neatly and conveniently within plastic card pockets in a three-ring binder. The major problem would be that I know of no catalogue that summarizes the ones that were made.

3. Magic slates. I liked them as a kid and they were made over the years with dozens and dozens of cool licensed characters. It would be easy to store dozens within plastic card pockets in a three-ring binder. Here are a couple I own right now:

The major problem would be that I know of no catalogue that summarizes the ones that were made.

4. Bubble gum card display boxes. Since I collect cards and wrappers, this is a natural for me although right now I only have a single 1958 Topps CFL display box. I've resisted the urge to collect these so far because the vintage ones are extremely tough to find in really nice condition and would therefore be very expensive to purchase. But a small collection of a couple of dozen choice ones would still be nice and perhaps doable over a decade's time.

Moreover a few select Halloween candy boxes could be a subcategory of a display box collection.

5. Roalex sliding puzzles of which I already have three. Dozens of these could also be readily stored within plastic card pockets in a three-ring binder.

6. Wacky Wobblers! Just because there are so many cool characters!

7. Miscellaneous monster figures and stuff including a Marx Dinosaur playset or three. Horrorhunter has infected me with his enthusiasm for the Marx playsets.

8. A few toy guns, e.g. a Johnny Seven O.M.A. and a cap gun and holster set or two.

Notice that I've dropped Halloween costumes off the list.

The Ben Cooper Green Lantern costume featured a particularly good mask:

The Ben Cooper Spider-Man costume could be found in a nice looking box but the costume itself was pretty lousy:

I'm surmising that yellow was added to enhance the costume's reflectivity. Compared to Spider-Man's actual outfit though, the Ben Cooper costume left much to be desired:

My favourite Ben Cooper superhero costume is probably this one:

It's not any better designed/executed than the others, but the Fly is such a semi-obscure character that I have to give Ben Cooper kudos for doing a Fly costume!

The Ben Cooper Astro Spook Halloween costume is among the most storied Halloween costumes of them all, particularly among us UMAers!

Obviously, nearly every main character of the original Star Wars movies got a costume. R2-D2 is rather not someone you'd expect to translate into the shape of a human body, but here we are.

To me the appeal of these Ben Cooper and Collegeville costumes arises from the following factors:

1. I remember them hanging from the ceiling at the Kresge store in downtown London in the early sixties.

Ahhh... Kresge's.  One of my childhood paradises.  We had one here in NJ.  I remember the costumes displayed as you speak as well as the Aurora Models they sold.  GREAT store.  Never left without something.

Ben Cooper originally issued a Wolfman costume in a comparatively staid generic company box:

(https://static1.squarespace.com/static/51b3dc8ee4b051b96ceb10de/5615a827e4b042d6d89bcd68/5615a836e4b042d6d89bcddf/1444259896712/ben-cooper-wolfman-costume.jpg)

The costume though was beautifully gaudy:

The box for the Wolfman costume was eventually pimped up quite nicely though:

Ben Cooper used the Spook Town brand name for a number of years beginning in the 1960's:

Some of the costumes marketed as Spook Town were indeed pretty spooky:

I never understood the decision to put an image of the Superhero on the front instead of just replicating the actual costume! Hated that as a kid!

I never had a full-fledged store bought (Collegeville, Ben Cooper, etc.) Halloween costume as a kid. My parents would have thought such a thing was shamelessly profligate and completely out of the question. None of my trick or treating buddies ever had such a thing either. We all just wore masks that we'd bought at the local corner store.

I'm therefore not sure when I first noticed that most of these costumes had the character's name or picture emblazoned on the front and were thus self-referential. But I thought it was ridiculous and bizarre when I did.

But I now associate the tacky self-referential aspect with the kids' costumes of old that I remember seeing hanging from the ceiling in the downtown Woolworth, Kresge, Metropolitan and Zellers stores.

As a result that's now what I expect in a kids' costume.

Quote from: Wikipedia
The company(Ben Cooper) suffered heavy financial losses in the early and mid-1980s. Beginning on September 29, 1982, seven people died after taking the painkiller Tylenol. Investigators discovered that someone had tampered with the product, lacing it with potassium cyanide. Terrified parents nationwide refused to allow their children to celebrate Halloween the following month, and sales of costumes plummeted and did not recover for several years. Ben Cooper, Inc. formed the Halloween Celebration Committee along with eight other manufacturers of Halloween costumes, masks, makeup, and accessories and (in cooperation with the Toy Manufacturers of America) published the booklet "13 Great Ways to Celebrate Halloween" in order to reassure parents and help stimulate interest in the holiday again. Despite this setback, in 1984 the firm was still the largest supplier of Halloween costumes in the United States.

I didn't know until now that the Tylenol tampering case acted to put a chill on trick or treating!

A side-by-side comparison reveals that the mask from the Ben Cooper Aquaman Halloween costume from 1967:

Utilized the same mold that was used for Green Lantern's mask with different colours selectively applied:

It seems that Ben Cooper was shamefully eager to do some economizing at the time.

Here's an interesting article on Ben Cooper including an interview with Ira Cooper, the son of one of the company co-founders:

Behind the Plastic Mask: When BEN COOPER Ruled Halloween - 13th Dimension (https://13thdimension.com/behind-the-plastic-mask-when-ben-cooper-ruled-halloween/)

Quote from: 13th Dimension
RetroFan: Speaking of superheroes, in the ’60s, Ben Cooper produced some of the earliest merchandising for superheroes, including Spider-Man and Green Lantern, anticipating the decade’s superhero boom. Who on staff first realized the appeal of superheroes?

Ira Cooper: This was nearly all Nat—something for which he rarely gets the credit—although it was Ben who saw it, let’s say, concomitantly, and turned the comic and cartoon art into Halloween art that kids would want to wear. But it was Nat who pushed it, as he was directly connected to the growing world of comics and TV cartoons (which he monitored in great detail).

Ben saw the immense value in the costume front being a “billboard” for the character’s most salient features. Had they gone for realism (with some notable exceptions) they would have lost that “look at me” value of the costume that the child showed off one night per year.
