Title: Diener Industries figures!
Post by: Hepcat on May 12, 2017, 11:30:03 AM
We don't have a comprehensive thread here on the various figures issued by Diener Industries over the years!

Among the figures issued by Diener were Space Creatures including robots and spaceships, Monsters and Dinosaurs. Each figure was issued in multiple colours such as orange, yellow, green, blue and brown.

They were issued singly as toys with McDonalds Happy Meals beginning in the late seventies or as carded rack toys:

Diener reused the molds and repopped the figures as soft rubbery ones, hard plastic or even pencil erasers - in other words as whatever they thought they could flog that particular year.

So tell us what you know about the various Diener sets and figures and about your real life experiences with these things! And show us pics of what you have (ideally with a good explanation)!

There is also a set of smaller dinos that look cooler than the larger set. I have them but I'll have to eventually dig them out to make a pic of to post. I couldn't find a net pic of the smaller ones.

Rubbery.

Though the Diener rubbery figures were marketed as erasers I'll bet not many were used for that. Why mess up a cool figure when you could just use a plain eraser? Most kids probably agreed with that which is why there are still so many of these in the marketplace.

So you're saying that the soft and rubbery category is the same as the eraser category?

To my understanding, yes.

I only have a set of the Space Creatures (Monsters), and the dinos (small & large), and I'm by no means a Diener expert. But, the rubbery ones were intended as erasers according to the packaging in the photos posted above.

Does anyone know if they were ever made in plastic?

All the ones I've seen for sale are rubber ones.

This is what the Minifigures.blogspot (http://minifigures.blogspot.ca/2008/02/space-creatures.html) has to say about the Space Creatures specifically:

Quote from: Minifigures
These sculpts can now be found in a number of different colors and at least 3 types of plastic, comparatively soft (retail release), medium (Happy Meal release), and hard (more recent incarnations).

Evidently Diener Industries produced quite a few other cool series of figures used as premiums within McDonald's Happy Meals. Here's a pic of a wild set of Mythological Creatures:

I derived much of the info on the Diener figures in my opening post from the blogspot of the Retroist:

Retroist - Diener Space Collection (http://www.retroist.com/2011/08/17/diener-space-collection/).

Retroist - Diener Monster Collection (http://www.retroist.com/tag/diener/).

Here's a good drawing of the Diener Space Creatures by Sean Hartter from the Retroist's blogspot:

I wonder which soft ones I have, since I don't have any others to compare them to?

Evidently the light purple colour is found only among the erasers. A light purple figure would therefore enable one to differentiate between the soft plastic Happy Meal figures and the ones subsequently issued on cards as erasers.

The Diener Space Raiders were a Happy Meal issue that preceded the Space Aliens:

Diener also subsequently marketed the Space Raiders as rack toys in the form of erasers:

So to muddy the waters even further, here are a couple of quotes from another thread:

I remember the robots and spaceships I got from McDonalds were a soft rubber, while all the aliens (as well as mythological monsters that Diener made, such as the centaur and Medusa) were a much harder, almost pvc material.

Yeah, The Space Raiders are soft and The Space Creatures are hard. There are 8 colors of each: Blue, Brown, Pink, Yellow, Orange, Dark Green, Light Green and Light Gray.

Pink, Dark Green, Light Gray?

The best and most detailed description of the Diener Space Creatures may perhaps be on the Little Weirdos (http://www.littleweirdos.net/2013/11/diener-space-creatures-revisited.html) site.

Beginning about the 1:40 mark, the softness and bendability of the Diener Space Raiders is compared with that of the Diener Space Creatures:

! No longer available (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1r085a5nnP0#)

But the fellow wasn't even aware that both sets were issued with McDonald's Happy Meals and as carded rack toy erasers. Therefore he may have been comparing the flexibility of a Space Raider in eraser format against a Space Creature from a Happy Meal.

I think you're mixing the eraser only colours in with those of the figures issued within Happy Meals. It seems that the Space Creatures issued within Happy Meals came in only Orange, Yellow, Light Green, Light Blue and Brown. Pink(Light Purple), Dark Green and Light Gray may have been colours used for the erasers but they weren't used for the Happy Meal figures.

Someone may perhaps have acquired the sign and empty bin, filled it with whatever Diener Alien Creatures they had handy, and then taken the picture.

I've not been able to find any really good pictures of the Diener Dinosaurs on the net (or the Jungle Creatures and the Sea Creatures for that matter). Curious given how many Happy Meal premium collectors there are these days.

Are the large and small Dinosaurs made of exactly the same rubbery material?

I must have Happy Meals one, then.

Speaking of Happy Meals, at the age of twenty there's no way we would have stepped up to the counter at McDonald's by ourselves and ordered a Happy Meal. We would have been much too cool for that. Of course we wouldn't have been collecting little rubbery plastic figures either so that would have presented no problem.

At the age of 35 having been bitten by the collecting bug we might have stepped up to the counter at McDonald's and sheepishly ordered  a dozen Happy Meals "for the hungry kids in the van on the soccer team we coach".

At the age of fifty though we just step up to the counter like confident full grown men and order a dozen Happy Meals. Then when the girl says "You must have a whole team of kids in the van", we just sneer and reply "What kids? I just collect the little toys that come with the Happy Meals. The food I donate to the Mission on the corner."

;)

The food I donate to the Mission on the corner.

When the BK monsters came out in '97, I didn't even order any food. I just drove up to the window and asked for this week's monster.

The smaller ones are much softer.

It would be interesting to compare the hardness/flexibility of the separate Dinosaur issues to that of your Space Creatures, particularly if you know whether your Space Creatures were given away as part of Happy Meals or issued on rack cards.

My Space Creatures are Brown and rather hard. My large dinos are hardish and different colors. My small dinos are very soft and different colors.

With the conflicting info in some of the links we posted it seems like we're still not close to the facts about hardness and color dictating release types. To be honest I'm okay with what I have and I won't be looking for any more Dieners. I only collect monsters and dinos anyway, so I'll pass on the other sets (even though the Mythological Creatures could be considered monsters I guess). If I found nice packaged Space Creatures and dinos for cheap I would probably pick them up, but they're near the bottom of my want list currently.
