Title: The Minor Films I Most Want To See On BLU-RAY
Post by: Monsters For Sale on September 08, 2016, 12:54:12 PM
With so many minor movies finally coming out on DVD and Blu-Ray, I got to thinking about what small films I most want to see get official, fully-restored releases (dare I wish with Commentary?) in the near future.

I think the three I most want to see on Blu-Ray (with extras) are The Man From Planet X, The Day the World Ended and Invasion of the Saucer Men.

I first saw The Man From Planet X on TV one night when I was home alone at a very young age.  (The only time I can remember ever being left alone.  My parents made a quick run to the drug store for some item they needed.)  I was lying on the floor, quite close to the TV, when the music welled up and The Man peered out of the spaceship window, his face filling the big TV screen.  I quickly changed channels until my heart rate returned to normal.  Just a few seconds later, when I returned to the station it was on, (we had to go all around the circular dial to get back in those days), I was disappointed to find that The Man's face was no longer in the window.  I felt foolish for being frightened.

The other two I can recall seeing first run in our little theatre.  I enjoyed them both immensely. Funny how some first viewings are so easy to recall.

What low budget favorites do you most look forward to seeing given first class releases?

Invasion of the Saucermen for sure. I've been clinging to my bootleg copy forever. I would love to see the 70s Ilsa grindhouse movies on BR.

What would make it perfect for me is, of course, Commentary - plus the inclusion of the made-for-TV color "remake" The Eye Creatures as an extra.  Not likey to happen as I think they are from different studios and all copies of Eye Creatures that I have seen are in terrible condition.

C'mon, Guys.  What's at the top of your wish list?

On top of mine were

1. Boy Who Cried Werewolf
2. Without Warning
3. Dark Night of the Scarecrow
4. House of the Long Shadows
5. Monster of pierdas Blancas
6.

Those got cleaned up quite nicely and made to blu ray, or are on their way

What I would really like to still see, that hasn't been touched:

1. Wasp Woman ...public domain...and crummy copies available. But the blu ray treatment and restoration would be a thing of beauty

2. Teenage Frankenstein

3. Teenage Werewolf

4. Hand of Death

That would be fantastic, an ILSA bluray release. Also, Invasion of the Saucermen. My Saucermen copy
is beyond old.

Guess i'm not sure if this counts as "minor" film, but I want original Godzilla versus Mechagodzilla on blue-ray and Godzilla 1985.

I agree with this 100%. I have been hanging on to a bootleg I picked up at a hole-in-the-wall comic convention a few years back, just waiting for an official release. The other big 3 on my list would be Earth vs. The Spider (1958), I Married a Monster from Outer Space (1958) & Teenagers from Outer Space (1959).

In no particular order:

The Flesh Eaters

The Slime People

Mutiny In Outer Space

Women Of the Prehistoric Planet

Devil-Girl From Mars

Cat Girl

Terror From the Year 5000

Giant From the Unknown

...Giant From the Unknown

Giant would make a great Blu-Ray.  Image Entertainment put out a very nice DVD of a copy from the Wade Williams Collection.  So we know superior elements still exist.  (I'm gonna re-watch that one right now.)

It would be fun to have a commentary about this very low budget film that used makeup created by Jack Pierce.

Not a "minor" film in the sense we have been talking about - but not a $200,000,000 blockbuster, either:

Just finished watching "Matinee" with John Goodman.  THAT is a film I would love to see get a Deluxe Collector's Edition BLU-Ray release.

It should come with Director and Film Historian Commentaries  -  Cast Commentary/Reunion/Interviews  -  The complete "MANT!" feature  -  Postcard-sized posters  -  and maybe coupons for Full-Sized Mail-away "MANT!" posters.

I'd be first in line to pre-order mine!

There is no complete feature. Just a couple of scenes/clips.

I would LOVE to have that. The U.K. was lucky enough to get a killer blu-ray of Matinee and The 'Burbs. I'm incredibly jealous.

Mike, do yourself a favor and invest in a region free player. They're not that expensive and will open the door to a world of exclusive import only releases. The restored Hammer Dracula alone is worth the price of the player.

I love what we have.

William Schallert and Robert Cornthwaite seem to be having a great time doing this.

Mant moves like as if he were being played by Murray Langston.

Both "MANT!" and 'The 'Burbs" are unappreciated Joe Dante films that wound up on German Blu-Ray releases.

I think the original elements for these two have been lost or damaged beyond all hope.  But I would dearly love to have someone discover something not far removed from camera negatives and blast these onto the Blu-Ray scene:

"Invaders From Mars" - 1953

"1984" - 1956

Complete with all the extras.

Although I don't consider this film "minor" in any sense of the word:

THE THING From Another World, 1951 has never been given a full-fledged Blu-Ray issue.  There is a bare-bones Blu-Ray put out by Warner Brothers as a "Warner Archives" made-on-demand release.  But screw that.

I want a proper 4k scan regular Blu-Ray disc with all the bells and whistles:  Tom Weaver commentary, additional one or two commentaries, some historical prospective documentary with directors like Joe Dante, et al (maybe hosted, narrated by John Carpenter), Stills and promotional material gallery, etc.

Even though The Man From Planet X just beat The Thing into release, It is The Thing that stands out in most minds as the first movie to feature an alien in the flesh.  It was the movie that set the tone for so many that followed.

How about a little long overdue respect?

Unfortunately I have these two on VHS.

Two releases I would love to see with a HD Blu-Ray treatment are Gargoyles (1972), with Bernie Casey, and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1968), with Jack Palance.

I know some of them have been mentioned earlier in this post, but my all time dream would be a complete Blu-ray set of all of the AIP monster films of the 50s and early 60s. They all DESPERATELY need to be restored and given some real care. They have languished either in release hell or on DVDs in less than sub-par formats.

These flicks need to be given some respect with full restorations, tons of bonus footage, documentaries etc.

It would be something like this:

THE AIP MONSTER COLLECTION (BLU-RAY) SET 1:
Beast with a Million Eyes (1955)
Day the World Ended (1955)
Phantom from 10,000 Leagues (1955)
It Conquered the World (1956)
The She Creature (1956)
Astounding She Monster (1957)

THE AIP MONSTER COLLECTION (BLU-RAY) SET 2:
The Undead (1957)
I Was a Teenage Werewolf (1957)
Invasion of the Saucermen (1957)
Cat Girl (1957)
The Amazing Colossal Man (1957)
I Was a Teenage Frankenstein (1957)

THE AIP MONSTER COLLECTION (BLU-RAY) SET 3:
Blood of Dracula (1958)
Terror from the Year 5000 (1958)
Attack of the Puppet People (1958)
How to Make a Monster (1958)
War of the Colossal Beast (1958)
Teenage Caveman (1958)

THE AIP MONSTER COLLECTION (BLU-RAY) SET 4:
Night of the Blood Beast (1958)
The Brain Eaters (1958)
Earth vs. the Spider (1958)
The Headless Ghost (1959)
Ghost of Dragstrip Hollow (1959)
Attack of the Giant Leeches (1959)

How many of us wouldn't shell out for something like this? This is my dream set.

If they were in sets like that and at a reasonable price, yeah, but most of these kinds of BDs are being sold as singles at $25-35 ea. That's about a grand for all those movies. I've got all but 4 of them on DVD, or DVD-R for the PD (and Suzi) titles.

Just off the top of my head:

1) Man-Made Monster

2) House of Horrors

3) Jungle Captive

And, although it's not a minor film:

Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1932)!!!

Fair enough. I guess I was thinking along the lines of the Blood Island boxed set and Hemisphere Horrors boxed set that Severin put out recently.

I've got most of them too, but they have been copied from the VHS transfers and don't have the best image. It would be fun to see them cleaned up a bit and given some better treatment.

Day the World Ended, 1955 - BLU-Ray - Scream Factory - Scheduled Release Date:  March 10, 2020

And we finally get it in its proper 2.00:1 "Superscope"!

We are so lucky to have companies like Shout! Factory for delivering the goods on such a consistent basis!  We've gotten SO MANY great titles over this past year from them, with many in awesome steel-book editions,  that I can't wait to see what awaits us in 2020!
