Title: A Taste of Halloween
Post by: Monsters For Sale on October 05, 2015, 12:52:42 PM
No, this thread is not about toys.  But it isn't about memorabilia, either.

Since we are posting Halloween updates in this category, I am posting this thread here, too.  If the moderators feel this should be relocated, please feel welcome to do so.

The familiar smell of fresh pumpkin roasting over a candle always makes my taste buds tingle in anticipation of the special treats of Halloween.  Here are some products that can only be had during the holiday season.

All of the following products are being sold at Walmart and Walmart Food Stores:

Thomas' English Muffins, Pumpkin Spice - Limited Edition.  (Thomas' is also making Pumpkin Spice Bread and Bagels.)

If you like toast in the morning, I heartily recommend the English Muffins.  Haven't tried the other two, but the Bagels sound good.

I like to spread this on my muffins:

Kozlowski Farms Pumpkin Butter, available year 'round.

If you've ever had apple butter, it's kinda the same but spicier.  I normally have it on a dark rye - even better if you sprinkle chopped walnuts on top.

Ben & Jerry's Pumpkin Cheesecake Ice Cream, Limited Edition.

Good, mild flavor.  This would have to be good as a topper on apple pie - or instead of whipped cream on pumpkin pie.

M&M's Candy Corn Flavored White Chocolate.

Haven't tried these.  Said to be typical white chocolate with a hint of the Candy Corn flavor.  Might be good if you like the flavor of Candy Corn but hate the waxy texture.

Sweet's Candy Corn Flavored Taffy.

Also haven't tried these.  But might be good to have the Candy Corn flavor with a salt water taffy texture?

What special products have you found?

I hope to find a pumpkin beer that ACTUALLY tastes good.
So far the one's I've tasted don't taste much like pumpkin OR beer - just takes like something that does not belong together.

But yes, pumpkin pie always rocks.

I love the taste of beer, but hate the taste of pumpkins. I would love cheesecake beer, though.

Pumpkin Pie shakes at Arctic Circle (fast food chain)

Ghoul Aid Kool-aid Scary Blackberry is exquisitely divine, I challenge you to sip it without your pinky in the air link a snob. I bought a case at target, or as I call it Targeeeeaaaaaay, it is way more classy (and expensive) than Walmart, has carts that glide instead of shimmy, and the checkout girls are less homely.

Found this new Limited Edition Pumpkin Spice & Roasted Pumpkin Seeds Bread by Oroweat at the local Albertsons Supermarket.

The pumpkin spice flavor isn't as strong as I would have liked, but the crunchy roasted pumpkin seeds are a nice touch.

Albertsons is also carrying the full line of Thomas' Pumpkin Spice English Muffins, Bagels and Bread.

Those Thomas English Muffins are quite good. If you don't want to go that route for breakfast, might I suggest some Pumpkin-flavored butter (or margarine)?

I think the Thomas' English Muffins are my favorite so far - That and the Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream.

That flavored butter looks like it might be pretty good.

And, like the Ben & Jerry's Pumpkin Cheesecake Ice Cream, you can keep it in the freezer and have it for months after the holidays are over.

I haven't found any seasonal M&M's that I can't do without, but I do like me some Easter candy, so the recent trend to make Easter and Valentine's style candies spooky for Halloween sits well with me

It's a pity we have to put a food thread in Modern Monster Toys for lack of appropriate sections. Not only did The Great Purge wipe out a lot of good content, it also left us without good options for posting. In the long run it's proven to make it less enjoyable for the people who really keep UMA going... us.

I don't want to seem negative. What's done is done and we can't go back. My real point is that we need a General Discussion section again to post everything that doesn't fit anywhere currently. Be it food, video games, superhero comics, whatever. There are many things that are loosely related to monsters that don't have an appropriate posting home in current UMA.

BTW, great thread, Adam.  :)

I've had two Pumpkin Pie yogurts. Oikos Greek Style Pumpkin Pie is awesome! Tasted like filling right out of the pie, mixed with a bit of whipped cream. Yoplait Light's Pumpkin Pie was a disappointment. Obviously artificially flavored (whereas the Oikos lists pumpkin puree as its fourth ingredient).

The Peeps people also have these:

The 9 tombstones have only the 3 inscriptions shown.

(Not sure if the Caramel Apple Peeps were posted before.)

Hershey has this Candy Corn bar in two sizes:

Russell Stover has joined in with a Pumpkin Spice Latte Chocolate Bar:

Ghiardelli has Pumpkin Spice Caramel-filled Chocolate Squares.

Mars has these "Pecan Pie" M&M's:

Only thing here I have tried.  Found them at Walmart Food Store.  Can't recommend these.  Wa-ay too sweet, and did not make me think of Pecan Pie.  (Stick with the Candy Corn M&M's.  They remind me more of ice cream than of actual candy corn.)

Mars evidently didn't want to tinker with a tried and true candy bar, so they just colored the 3 Musketeers Bar nougat red:

I think it would have been a lot more fun to color the inside of the Peeps red.  "Oh my God!  Your baby chick is bleeding!"

Pillsbury Grands Cinnabons go the Pumpkin Spice route.

Hostess Donettes Pumpkin Spice Mini Donuts with Cinnamon Icing.

Hostess Pumpkin Spice Cup Cakes.

Philadelphia Pumpkin Spice Cream Cheese.  Tried this one.  Too sweet and not spicy enough for me.  (But I also discovered that they now make a Bacon-Flavored Philly Cream Cheese - Yum.)

If you bake, check out the cake mix, muffin mix, cookie mix isle.  Looks like everybody who makes mixes is getting in on the fad.

I couldn't find it, either.

I stocked up on the limited edition Thomas' English Muffins.  A friend suggested that I freeze a few packages.  I'm giving it a try.

Also got a few containers of the Ben & Jerry's Pumpkin Cheesecake Ice Cream for long after they are gone from stores.

Rather than start a new topic for 2016, I will just start adding to the thread from 2015 - since many of last year's treats will probably return this year.

Nonni's makes Italian Biscotti in various flavors all year 'round.  For the holidays they have added this Limited Edition flavor:

Nonni's Limited Edition Pumpkin Spice Biscotti

I found these at a Big Lots Store.  (I still slip up and call them "Pick 'n' Save" some times.)

Don't these sound good with a cup of hot tea on a crisp October day?
 -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(EDIT:  I gave these a try.  They are really GOOD!  I recommend them.)

                  Pumpkin Spice Pudding from Jell-O

I am glad Mr. Peanut clarified that the almonds are covered in pumpkin and spices as opposed to just pumpkin spice, which as we all know is the magical seasoning that makes pumpkins grow.

I'd like to try the ice cream!...

Ben & Jerry's made a pretty good Pumpkin Ice Cream last year.  I'm pretty sure they will make it again this year.

My local Walmart Food Mart couldn't keep it in stock - kept selling out.

Here are some cookie additions:

These Pepperidge Farm bags are dated to expire in 2014, but I see that they are on sale again this year.

Here is another variation from Nonni's that I did not see at my Big Lots Store.

Dark Chocolate Pumpkin Spice Biscotti from Nonni's

Any of these would be good with some Pumpkin Spice Ice Cream.  I want to find some more of those Nonni's Biscotti of both kinds.

I haven't seen the Candy Corn-flavored M&M's yet this year, but they were pretty good - so maybe these are OK:

Pumpkin Spice M&M's from Mars Candy Company

Or if you require fancier chocolate:

Pumpkin Spice Milk Chocolate Truffles from Lindt

These look good to me:

Pumpkin Spice Malted Balls from Nuts.Com

The Whoppers folks should make a version of their own - and maybe make small bags of them plus "Candy Apple Malted Balls" or "Caramel Apple Malted Balls" for handing out to the trick-or-treaters.  I'd buy 'em.

Something to sneak in to the movies:

Pumpkin Spice Boom Chicka Pop Kettle Corn from Angie's

Haven't tried these yet, but I like their regular Kettle Corn - Not too salty, and no un-popped kernels.

Candy Corn Oreo Cookies  from Nabisco

Never was a fan or gum.

Looked around for the Pumpkin Spice Oreos.  They have been out for several years but I have never seen a bag anywhere.  I found these Candy Corn Oreos at Target - didn't think I wanted to try them.

By the way, Target had the Ben & Jerry's Pumpkin Cheesecake Ice Cream and Pumpkin Spice Eggos.  Think If I toasted an Eggo extra crunchy and put a scoop of the ice cream on top it might be good?  (Some people might even put a thin drizzle of caramel and crumbled pecans on top and call it a fancy desert - topping it with a maraschino cherry is purely optional.)

You guys are talking about Halloween-themed treats and pumpkin spice flavored items and no one has mentioned the stuff from Dunkin' Donuts yet?  Their pumpkin coffee and doughnuts are great.  Just be careful though.  Last year, Dunkin' Donuts discontinued all of the pumpkin stuff immediately after Halloween, because they're just that impatient to get the Christmas stuff out.

Target had a ton of different M&M's, in 3 different places.  Couldn't find the Pumpkin Spice ones that are being advertised, but the Candy Corn M&M's are back from last year.

Target had a large Halloween section but very little in it, and all generic, if you don't count "Star Wars" crap - and I don't.

If you like the pumpkin spice coffee, there are multiple ways that you could have it imported to your country.  If you only prefer hot coffee, then DD does sell the pumpkin spice in Keurig cups.  If you really wanted to, you could try using the K cup pumpkin for iced coffee by putting ice in the hot coffee, but I tried that once and it was terrible.  If you prefer the iced coffee like me, then DD employees do actually "steal" the pumpkin spice syrup pumps and sell them on eBay after the flavor has been discontinued for the year.  However, this is something that I would only recommend doing at your own risk.  Make sure the sellers have good feedback.

As for the doughnuts themselves, that's going to be hard.  There are other people who try to make pumpkin doughnuts that are available in run-of-the-mill grocery stores, but I have never tried them and I don't know what companies would make/sell them in Toronto.  Dunkin' Donuts is the one thing that I'm actually glad I live in the United States for.  With this presidential election crap, I sometimes just want to pack up my bags and head up to Toronto myself (or anywhere else in Canada).  ;)

Very sad. Up until about twenty years ago there was a Dunkin' Donuts in Union Station in downtown Toronto but no more. There's one in Place Ville Marie adjacent to La Gare Centrale in downtown Montréal though!

But you better not be thinking of coming to Canada if you're not prepared to embrace Canadian football.

These thin, crunchy Pumpkin-shaped cookies look like they would be good with a cup of hot tea on a chilly fall afternoon.

I bought some of these and was eating them and just realized from looking at box that they were dyed fillings. I get the nice Halloween art and colors on the box, but does anyone really "half bite" a  Jr. Mint ? Does it matter what color is inside the chocolate coating ? I had to take a look. Funny as heck.

"Cookie butter (Danish: Trøffel-masse) is a food paste made primarily from Speculoos cookies crumbs; fat such as vegetable oil, condensed milk or butter; flour and sugar. The ingredients are mixed until it becomes spreadable like nut butter."

I tried the Little Debbie Pumpkin Rolls and Bat Brownies.  I can't recommend them.  I wouldn't even put them in a kid's school lunch, although he was making a fuss.  The Pumpkin Rolls were filled with way to sweet icing and the Brownies were like year-old fruit cake.

I think the Walmart cream cheese filled Pumpkin Roll looks pretty good.  But I'll want to employee a knife and fork when consuming mine.

As a kid, I hated Easter.   What a waste of a holiday.  It always came on a Sunday, so we didn't even get a day off from school; the candy was cheaply made; the chocolate was waxy and your basket was stuffed with worthless imitation grass and these inexpensive little space-fillers.

But, for those of you who might actually like them:

Fine milk chocolates have a wonderful creamy texture on the tongue.

Most bunny-shaped chocolate lacks that and doesn't have as rich an aroma to entice you to take a bite.

Still, when you are a kid and it is the only chocolate you have...

99.9% of all this brown candy is not real chocolate anyway. Even Hershey's. A real chocolate bar actually costs around $250.00 .  You won't see those in your Halloween Bucket.
There is a store in Rockefeller Center in NYC that sells real chocolate at $18.00 a piece. It is amazing stuff.

You know that real Cheddar is white/off-white and that orange cheddar stuff is dyed. Tastes the same.

The yellow/orange color comes from the beta-carotene in the grass the cows eat. They skim off the fat (where the beta-carotene is) from the milk to make butter.  That's why the butter is yellow and the cheese is white.

Sometimes a slight yellow, but never orange . Ever see orange milk ?  Those orange cheetos and cheezits, and orange chedder cheese logs and bricks are all dyed. It is more attractive to consumers that way.  Same taste though. I like all the white cheddar products. You don't get all that orange stuff all over yourself. Like red Pistachios.

I'm not a big fan of pumpkin flavoured pastries though.

Our WM has a bakery/deli. I just assumed they made them. If not, then they truck them in from somewhere.

From a bakery cum toxic waste disposal site in Newark, New Jersey probably.

As a kid, I hated Easter.   What a waste of a holiday.  It always came on a Sunday, so we didn't even get a day off from school; the candy was cheaply made; the chocolate was waxy and your basket was stuffed with worthless imitation grass and these inexpensive little space-fillers.

Me I took whatever I could get as a kid.

Wow.  I could never pinpoint exactly what I didn't like about Easter candy, but I think you've nailed it here.

Worse yet it was hollow. I always thought that was such a rip-off.

Fine milk chocolates have a wonderful creamy texture on the tongue.

Most bunny-shaped chocolate lacks that and doesn't have as rich an aroma to entice you to take a bite.

I don't like chocolate that's too fine, i.e. rich. You can't eat as much!

 ;D

Although I do agree that most bunny-shaped chocolate isn't really very good.

A real chocolate bar actually costs around $250.00 .  You won't see those in your Halloween Bucket.

There is a store in Rockefeller Center in NYC that sells real chocolate at $18.00 a piece. It is amazing stuff.

I was disappointed at the lack of any licensed Pepsi Universal Monster Displays this year.

But Nabisco has these "bookcase" Frankenstein & Bride displays in a couple local Albertsons Food Stores:

You can see that each free-standing display is made up of 2 bookcase displays stood back-to-back.  They are about 6 ft, tall.  The heads are positioned just in from of separate backgrounds to give them a 3D effect.

I didn't see anything on them to indicate these are made with Universal's blessing, and I have never seen these cartoon images anywhere else.  I wonder what Universal will have to say to Nabisco about this?

(Sorry, I messed up the color on the 2 Bride pictures.  I took the Monster pictures facing one way and the Bride pictures facing the opposite direction.  I didn't notice the different hues until I got home.)

Nabisco has had licenses with Universal for years. It would not matter anyway ,since they are not selling the displays and the displays do no damage to or infringe on universals marketing. Therefore it would probably fall under fair use of the likenesses.

That is actually not how this works.  No one can use copyrighted material to promote or sell a product without paying a licensing fee to the license holder.  They may not be selling the displays, but they are using the displays to sell the products, thereby profiting.

Nabisco no longer has a licensing deal with Universal, but they have been using generic monsters for advertising in store displays since about 2013.  There were some really great displays and box art a few years back that might have gotten the attention of Universal, which may be why they have changed them so much in just a few short years.  The first year, I would have sworn they were lifted right from the 1991 style guide.  These new ones have just enough differences to slide under the copyright radar.

Thanks for that info, but darn it,  I thought I understood this copyright stuff.  We have been dealing with the attorneys, the US copyright office, the printer, Universal Pictures, Comcast, and third parties for some weeks now, and it turns out that only one license is required and after only a few phone calls, it's pretty easy to get a Copyright License Agreement . I really, really wish I could post the paperwork here, but of course it cannot be done. It would surely enlighten most people, that is for sure. And I am going to read it all again myself, or have my attorney read/explain it to me. Ha .

Thanks. Have many color variations and art designs. Using the pink ones for my party, then another company takes over the project in the new year. I had been involved in a toy project years ago. The toy has not done that well and do not want the headache again. I only want to invest in sure things now. Ha

Popcorn/ice buckets.
I would be interested in purchasing a reasonably priced (i.e. CHEAP) repro of the popcorn bucket. I never had one as a kid so there isn't that sense of nostalgia that would make me pay big bucks for an original. The graphics have the cool Monsterkid aesthetic which makes it desirable as cheap eye-candy to add to the collection. You, or whomever, would probably be able to sell several of these as long as the price was right.

Nothing wrong with selling cheap custom repops as long as they aren't misrepresented as originals. Of course there's always a chance that once a bunch of repros were let loose in the marketplace some might eventually be misrepresented by some unscrupulous or ignorant seller. It should be easy to tell a new repop from an original anyway unless some crook decided to "weather" the piece. Years down the road some of the repops might have enough age and wear to make it a little confusing. I would suggest making the repros a slightly different size from the originals to give a definite way for folks to tell the difference.

Try this on the previous page:

Planning on producing what?

Toys, models, books...   ?

and...
Cool.

I thought that was just for your own party.

Not crazy about the pink buckets.  Thought about other colors?  (Orange with the black monsters would be very Halloween-y.)

Good luck with your projects.

You were one of the people discussing it. C'mon, man.

Not a special taste, but some special packaging:

Big Red, 7-Up, A&W Root Beer, Sunkist, Canada Dry & Squirt - 12 oz. soft drinks - from Dr. Pepper/Seven Up

Available at Walmart, these look like they would be a hit at any kids' Halloween party.

Hostess has their "Scary Cakes" (orange iced chocolate cupcakes) and "GLO Balls" (orange snow balls) back again already.  Nothing special about that, but they did beautiful boxes this year - very dark and spooky.

(They looked much cooler in the store.)

Oh man! So good and so good for you.

A few years ago the Hostess snack cakes came with DC superhero themed designs for Halloween:

Fruit Chews - Assorted Fruit Rolls - from Tootsie Roll Industries

Lemon, Lime, Orange, Cherry & Vanilla Tootsie Roll Miniatures.  The only time I remember seeing these was when they would show up in my trick-or-treat bag.  In the "What's Your Favorite Halloween Candy?" competition, they ran neck-and-neck with Brach's Candy Corn and Spangler's Circus Peanuts.

Yummm.

I hadn't seen (or eaten) any of those since I'd gotten some trick or treating fifty years ago when I came across them in the Halloween aisle in the Dollar Store about four years ago. They were delicious over fifty years ago and they're still delicious today!

Just a reminder that pumpkin-flavored stuff is back in stores at least through Thanksgiving - and many products until the week after New Year's.

One of my favorites, Thomas' Limited Edition English Muffins will be available in Pumpkin Spice and Cranberry editions.

Not too sweet and great toasted with butter.

Haven't tried these, but man does that picture look great!

Also, Kozlowski Pumpkin Butter is finally back in stock at Albertson/Vons stores.  Think Apple Butter but better.  They also make Apple Butter and various fruit spreads.  Really good stuff.

I gotta stock up.  I ran out last year and have been anticipating their return to shelves.

                                                        HALLOWEEN - Food - Zombie Skittles - 2019

New for 2019, They will be released in 3 different sizes.

Here is a press release:

Skittles is offering customers a trick hiding in their treats this Halloween.  Mars Incorporated is introducing “Zombie Skittles” this fall. The limited edition candy will be marketed to those looking for some Halloween fun.

Each package includes a mix of six flavors. Five of them are your standard fruity flavors with Halloween-themed names like “Boogeyman Blackberry” and “Blood Red Berry.”

But, the sixth flavor is called “Rotten Zombie.” The candymaker describes it as an “utterly disgusting taste experience.  Customers will not be able to tell which candy is Rotten Zombie flavor because it will be hidden with the other flavors.

The company promises the taste will “elicit strong reactions from anyone and everyone daring enough to try it.”

Hmmm.

                     HALLOWEEN - Food - Maple Creme Oreos - 2019 - Ltd Ed

Scheduled to come out at the end of August.

Not strictly a Halloween treat, this autumn edition will serve very well for Halloween and Thanksgiving.

I like Maple, but have always found it a little over-powering.  I think a couple of these would do well to satisfy any temporary craving for that special taste.  Good item to put out on party tables.  Everyone will want to have some, but few will want to eat the whole bag at one sitting.

I hope I get to try these while they are available.

Sometimes the Halloween version of snack-size candies brings us nothing more than Halloween-themed packaging.

But, I always thought anything that took on a Halloween look for the holiday was just that much more fun to find in my pillowcase treat bag.

Looks like Palmer is still making them, because Candy Warehouse lists them in their online catalog:

Terrific! Just gotta buy them online, then! Dunno if it’s nostalgia or what but THIS chocolate tastes better than other chocolate. You can taste the cocoa, or at least you could last time I had them.

They are the same cheap, waxy chocolate that we get in Easter baskets.

If you can't find them in grocery stores, try the seasonal shelves in large pharmacies.  They would have different wrappers, but Palmer probably makes coins for Easter and Christmas, too.  I'm sure they don't change the chocolate formula for other holidays - just the outer wrapping.

Cheap?! Waxy?!! You besmirch my beloved!!!

😆

I think it’s the nostalgia. I used to get the monster ones as a kid and these wrappers always delight me.

It’s like Halloween Oreos. The icing is just a different color but somehow they just taste better when they’re orange.

A few years ago, I bought a box of Count Chocula to try it again since... well, since I was much younger. Either they changed the recipe, or my tastes have changed but it was horrible! I ended up tossing the contents after one bowl.

As a kid, however, I pretty much loved all of 'em!

Available from Walmart in mid-September.

Blends traditional Spam with cinnamon, allspice and nutmeg.  Suggested for use as a topping for waffles, an addition to hash or “baking into morning treats” - whatever that means.

I'd be willing to give this a try.  Might be an interesting substitute for bacon with eggs and pancakes.

Ugh! SPAM! The true acronym- Special Parts And Membranes.

TAKE IT BACK!!!  My wife found me loathsome when she discovered I was particular to SPAM. Then I challenged her to the following. You thin slice some SPAM and cook it on a frying pan (I like it crispy like bacon) and your life will become a better place.  Better yet, add some Kraft Macaroni and Cheese as a side and all your worries will be swept away. She is a SPAM fan now (and I cannot emphasize how unlikely that is).

As to the composition of SPAM I would take that over sausage or hot dogs if your being picky (and I will happily eat all of them). I have been eye witness to the process for both many, many times and prior to being formed into the hot dog shape, hot dogs have passed through a long conveyor belt of ALL the nasty pig parts getting discarded from the ham, bacon, pork chops, even the sausage. The hot dog is made from the sludge that is left over from all of that (kind of like Danny DeVito in the movie Twins.  Add some food coloring and run it through the hot dog shaper and there you have it.  The hot dog.

SPAM, it's what's for dinner.

Ugh! SPAM! The true acronym- Special Parts And Membranes.

"The primary ingredient in Spam is chopped pork shoulder meat mixed with ham. About 90% of Spam is pork from a pig's shoulders. The remaining 10% (or so) comes from the pig's buttock and thigh, better known as ham."

It is held together with a little potato starch and the meat's natural gelatin.  Sugar and salt added.

Better than more highly regarded chorizo.  It has "lymph nodes, salivary glands and misc. meat bi-products".  Ymmm.   (I read that off the label for some that a roommate offered me many years ago.  I declined.

These might be OK if you want the taste, but not a whole pie:

I've never been interested in the fruit-flavored Pop Tarts, but I could be tempted to try one of these.

I don't know about this.....I love my strawberry Pop Tarts.

These have been around for a while.  The bag designs are pictured on the box.  (The bag graphics change every year.)

I like these little bags of pretzels.  I usually just want a few pretzels - but then I get stuck with a whole open bag that gets stale.  With these I can have a few at a time and all the rest stay sealed.

I also like the mini pretzels because I can pop the whole pretzel in my mouth at once and avoid all the pretzel crumbs that result from eating a giant Bavarian pretzel.

The marshmallow cupcake glow balls taste like any other color of Hostess snowball, I eat those all year long.

Why can't they redesign the General Mills Monster Cereal boxes? Those are the same as the ones they've had for the last two years, or better yet rerelease Yummy Mummy and Fruit Brute which hasn't happened since 2014.

Worst Hallow-taste news by far is that it appears that Target will NOT I repeat Not have the Hersey's chocolate apples filled with caramel and green apple this year despite being a smash hit for the last two years straight. I checked brick stock, I looked at SKUs at 4 different Target stores for their candy placements and I checked the Hersey's website, not a mention. I report this with deep sorrow because as far as I know they were the single greatest confection ever concocted by mortal man, beyond good, I mean eye-roll and shudder good. So good in fact that they sold out immediately on the day of, I had to go to seven stores to finally find some last year and bought all 10 bags they had when I did. Lament with me monster friends, a tasty fall treat is gone or appears to be.

I don't know if I would chance that as I am allergic to peanuts so if they have similar bags some with nuts some without too risky probably made on the same line. Also those look much larger than the Hersey's ones which were the size of a dollar coin or so.
You don't even chew you just let the chocolate melt in your mouth to experience the caramel apple sensation upon center breakthrough while letting the whole syrupy melted choco-mess slide down your throat. Man, I haven't had one in a year but can still taste it now. Looks like I need to message the Hersey's company and demand some answers. Pure decadence. Few things in life give that sort of indulgent food gratification, a cold beverage of your favorite flavor, a nice bite into a tasty well planned and proportioned sandwich, steaming cheese stretching from you pizza.

I just saw Cadbury mini eggs usually available at Easter reskinned for Halloween as well

These  "Mystifying Mints" come in a Ouija Board-shaped tin box.  There is 1½ oz. of heart-shaped, peppermint-flavored planchettes.  Michael's Crafts sells them for $3.99.

I know that's a lot (Hasbro licensing), but maybe someone could use the box for something neat.

When I discovered this gum a couple of days ago, I checked the label to see where it was made but I found only that it was made for Candy Dynamics of North Michigan Road in Carmel, Indiana which is a suburb of Indianapolis. Taking another look today I found it was actually made in Pakistan.

Now I might be bold enough to sample toxic waste goop from Indiana since I've lived all my life in the Great Lakes area and should have some immunity to the toxic wastes of this area, but Pakistan? No way.

Great stuff! Interesting regional variations. And some surprising one-offs - Hershey's in Delaware, Jolly Rancher in Illinois, Swedish Fish in Kentucky, Red Hots in Tennesee, Air Heads in Louisiana, Gummy Worms in South Dakota, Sweet Tarts in Wyoming and Nerds in Colorado. And I'm surprised that Hot Tamales are so popular down the center of the States.

Hey, that doesn't look like an American Oh Henry! bar.

That's because American and Canadian Oh Henry! bars are different. The American bar is the one with the flatter less bumpy surface to your left in this picture:

Quote from: Wikipedia
The bars are different in appearance: the Canadian version is one bar with the fudge in the center, the fudge surrounded with a thin layer of caramel, and the nuts surrounding that layer before it is surrounded in the (chocolate) coating.

Oh Henry chocolate bars were produced in Canada since around 1930 by the Walter M. Lowney Company which had moved from Boston to Canada in 1903. (I can't find a good comprehensive history of Lowney's right now though.) Sadly Lowney's was acquired by American chocolate giant Hershey's in 1987 and yet another icon of Canada's cultural identity disappeared.

Know your candy!

So evidently the Mars bar sold in Canada is the British version. Unlike the version that was sold in the States, it has no almonds. For a number of years though the American variant of the Mars bar with the almonds was also sold in a white wrapper here in Canada:

Canadian Mars Bars Commercial (https://youtu.be/8NpNfv7cSzI)

I used to buy the almond version fairly often but it's no longer available.

Snickers bars in an almond as well as the regular peanut variant are available in Canada though. So are a bunch of other gimmicky Snickers bars to which I pay no attention. Nonetheless I rarely buy Snickers bars of any kind. I much prefer the Mars bar with the almonds.

Nothing like Vachon Passion Flakies are sold in the United States and they are simply the best! They can be bought individually wrapped at most variety stores but buy a whole box of six in a supermarket. You won't regret it. They'll make you want to move to Canada.

As a kid I almost always bought Oh Henry bars rather than Sweet Maries because I liked the Oh Henry name better. But Sweet Maries are actually a touch sweeter and thus tastier than Oh Henrys and that's saying a lot! At 60 grams a Sweet Marie bar is a couple of grams smaller than an Oh Henry bar though. It was one of the Willard's brands that Neilson's acquired in the 1970's. Since 1996 Neilson's has been part of the Cadbury conglomerate and sadly most Neilson's chocolate products now carry the Cadbury brand name.

Get an Oh Henry too. You can of course compare it to the Sweet Marie bar.

Previously a Lowney's brand but since the 1990's Lowney's has been part of the Hershey conglomerate. Cherry Blossom is tough to find these days but is worth it! Talk about a mega dose of sweet flavour!

Once my favourite though in recent years I've found myself preferring Sweet Marie and Oh Henry. Originally Willard's Extra Big, Neilson's renamed the brand after acquiring Willard's in the 1970's. Since 1996 Neilson's has been part of the Cadbury conglomerate, but the Mr. Big chocolate bar remains truly excellent. Even a multi-national hasn't been able to screw it up.

For peppermint lovers! Not as smooth as the York Peppermint Patties, but Pep has it all over whatever else when it comes to appearance. Another one time Neilson's brand now made by Cadbury.

Walmart has their Pumpkin Cake Roll with Cream Cheese Filling for sale again.  I ordered one with a grocery delivery, but I ordered too late in the day - they were already sold out.

I'll do my usual earlier order next time.

Sweet Chaos gets my seal of approval. Sam's Club does not. I'm more of a downtown Kresge, Woolworth, Zellers, Metropolitan or Grant's store kind of shopper.

Believe it or not, the shape does affect the taste, because the peanut butter to chocolate ratio is different, unlike in M&M's.  I myself prefer the eggs, because they are the perfect balance.

HALLOWEEN - Food - Monster Cereal - General Mills, 2022

Count Chocula, Franken Berry, Boo Berry and Frute Brute

The announcement:

"General Mills' Monster Cereals are back for the 2022 Halloween season in four limited-edition boxes designed by American artist Kaws (stylized as "KAWS").

For the first time in almost a decade, Frute Brute (last seen in 2013 and offering the "howlin'-good taste of fruit") makes a return and is joined by Franken Berry, Count Chocula, and Boo-Berry.

The limited-edition boxes are inspired by the "vintage styling of the original boxes."

Not very Halloweeny looking.  I wish they would have used a darker/nighttime background and maybe a few Halloween staples like pumpkins, full moons, etc.

The prize is a limited edition set of 4 KAWS designed Monster Cereals figures.

Here's where to enter the contest:

                        https://www.kawsmonsters.com/

Here is the code for entering without making a purchase:  Monsters424

You can enter once each day in the months of August, September, October and November.

(Or wait until a winner puts his up on eBay at what I am sure will be a reasonable price.)

HALLOWEEN - Food - Pumpkin Spice Grahams - Goldfish & Dunkin' Donuts, 2022

The folks who make Goldfish Crackers and Dunkin' Donuts have teamed up to make Pumpkin Spice Grahams.

If they have the taste of pumpkin graham crackers and the crunch of the traditional Goldfish, they might not be all that bad.

I worry about the texture.  Not crazy about soft graham crackers - like the crunchiness of Goldfish.

Frute Brute is 428 (both boxes, so I assume these are the codes everybody gets on their boxes)

From my boxes:

Count Chocula is 425
Boo Berry is 426
Frankenberry is 427
Frute Brute is 428 (both boxes, so I assume these are the codes everybody gets on their boxes)

They are keeping track of which product brings them more contest entries.

424 = No purchase Internet entries
    425 = Count
    426 = Boo
    427 = Frank
    428 = Brute

I'll bet the big mega boxes have another number.  (Maybe if everyone uses the Frute Brute number, they will bring them back again next year.)

Those things are only marshmallows if you sucked all the air out of a marshmallow and let it dry up for a few weeks.

If you don't win, have no fear.  You can always get a set from eBay!

I've yet to try a Little Debbie pastry product that I can stand.  But I'd be willing to give this ice cream a taste test.

I'm hoping they'll allow me to just pay for Happy Meals but only get the buckets. I haven't had McDonald's in close to 20 years and I'm not about to break that run or waste the food.

You can buy the toy... most of the time.  Some managers refuse, but they should let you do it.  If you go to one restaurant and they say no, head to another.  Just make sure, if the first place was a franchise that refused, don't go to a store in the same franchise.

Who knew "marsh"mallows ever had anything to do with actual marshes?  I sure didn't.

Nor "Mallow" plants, that I'd never heard of.

Never seen them in the states... and I've been to every supermarket in the region this season.

Piles of these other Frito-Lay Halloween boxes can be found in any Canadian supermarket or Walmart:

Pity I don't like Doritos because the Doritos box gets my vote for the best one followed by Lay's, Cheetos Crunchy and Ruffles.

Here's this year's Halloween assortment from Nestlé:

But Miranda and I thought something more was needed this year:

So we cooked up a special bar:

Have you seen it in your neck of the woods yet?

Yeah, we have the Witch's Brew KitKats from Hershey's, but we don't carry Nestle KitKat.  I do not like "white" KitKats.  Nestle doesn't do anything for Halloween stateside.  Your assortment is cool.

So before I help Selene go shopping this weekend:

(Selene was very naughty this week. She turned the local parson into a salamander. I think he deserved it though.)

It's scans of the side panels you want for Clipart (whatever that is)?

So before I help Selene go shopping this weekend:...  ...  It's scans of the side panels you want for Clipart (whatever that is)?    ???

High Res scans of the silhouettes, like the witch dancing with her cat familiar.

Those would look good on Halloween-themed T-shirts for kids - or to decorate stationery / Halloween party invitations, etc.

So I bought a box of the Nestlé's chocolates with the cat and three of the Frito-Lay boxes including the one with the dancing cat today. I'll get them all scanned tomorrow.

I'll get them all scanned tomorrow.

So I scanned the sides and end panels of the three Frito-Lay boxes as well as the Nestlé box and each of the individual chocolate bars. I can provide these scans to anyone who PMs an email address to me.

These aren't contemporary purchases but cool none the less & are purely Halloweeny rather U.M. Have held onto them for about 8-10yrs now.

Here's a beer called 'Hobgoblin' by Wychwood Brewery I used to enjoy (not so much this blonde version they call 'Gold' but the bottle was too nice to pass up). The company used to do excellent labels every year for Samhain, but dropped that 'decadence' on their regular Ruby Hobgoblin Ale during the past two & a bit years hoo-ha for a very crap label instead which is a real pity. Glad I kept the good uns though. Excuse the dust on the bottle.

& here's another shelf sitter I have had for about 10 years. The actual treacle expired 2015, no idea if it would be still good to eat or not, probs fine, though i wont be trying it anytime soon. I have two of these actually, not sure where the other can is. Anyway, love the design of this, goes back to whats now deemed 'Retro Halloween' aesthetic, it does have that bygone era design, but that's what beautiful about it to me. Has  a bit a Carni look too, can imagine walking through this as an entrance at a sideshow somewhere 🎃

Not sure if it's something done States side, but when we were kids, one of the party games for Halloween was Treacle slathered crumpets or scones hung up just above nose height on a horizontal string line & you would have to try & compete with friends, siblings, cousins, etc by eating them with your hands behind your back, very messy & much fun 🎃
