Title: Your Top 3 to the Grave
Post by: the_horror_man on March 26, 2015, 09:31:22 PM
You know the old saying, "you can't take it with you" when you die. Well, screw that, I'm taking some of my collectibles with me. Yup, right into the casket they will go with me. ;D I was thinking, which items from my collection would I take? I am curious as to what items others would take to the grave as well. I think 3 choices seems like a good number. Now, if trying to decide which 3 is keeping you awake at night, lol then you can chose a runner up. The runner up is just in case something happens to one of your top 3. Also, you have to currently own the items. I would like to see pics of everyone's choices. However, if you are not a pic person, just post your list. Also, come back to the thread anytime and update your list if needed. Ok, here is my list in no particular order and the runner up.

Subway Toys The Screamin Jack 1/6 figure
Incredible Hulk custom statue
Custom Sea Witch mask

Runner up
Devils Rejects Otis 1/6 figure

None.  In my "heaven" all the monster toys I've ever wanted will be provided once I die so the earthly ones won't do me any good.   :)

i think this would be a fun thread, Horror Man! Great idea! I have to think about it for a bit though...none of my monster toys are really that rare or special enough for me to put them on the list but I do have other toys that would probably be up there. Would love to see what everyone else comes up with!

Hi Count. This has only to do with the things that are dear to you. Price and rarity of the items is irrelevant. A good example of this is originally, there was another item that was going to be in my top 3, but I changed it. However, I might change it back. This simple vintage rubber Skeleton jiggler made around the 1960's only cost me $8 and it is one of my favorite collectibles.

If any of such stuff of mine is left, I hope it remains gets into the hands of someone else that it can bring joy to here.

As Zombie says, I expect things on the other side to take care of themselves.

Have you ever seen Mike Hill's Karloff sitting in the chair statue? It is probably one of, if not the most accurate piece portraying Karloff.

That's the problem I'm having too with the way this question is phrased. I don't want my treasures buried with me. That would be destroying them! I want my collection of stuff to survive and continue to be treasured after I'm gone.

With the exception of the 3 items that come with me, my whole collection will go to someone or several people. The Egyptian Pharaohs were buried with valuable items. I probably should add that this thread is only for fun. I am just kidding around and having fun or am I? ;D >:D

I'll compile a list then of the three monsterrific items from my collection that I'd most want with me in my cabin were I taking a slow leisurely round-the-world cruise in an ocean liner.

Space in those cabins is strictly limited so I'd have to be selective.

Okay. Here are the three monster toys/collectibles I'd take on my round-the-word cruise where I'd end up marooned on a dessert island:

1. Aurora Bride of Frankenstein

2. Aurora Mummy

3. Revell Brother Rat Fink

I built all of these kits as a kid so they all have special meaning for me.

My alternate would be my Standard Plastics Products Mummy-Dracula wallet:

Were it complete with the original cards, it would perhaps be my number #1.

Awesome! A fellow Kaiju fan. There don't seem to be many large monster lovers here. Godzilla is one of my all time favorites. The Hedorah figure is awesome. Speaking of, this is my CCP Hedorah. The figure is not painted, the vinyl is made like that. The companies logo is in the eyes. Also, he comes with the smog tower.

The concept of "taking something to the grave" means nothing to me. I'm not a pharaoh. I don't expect anything but oblivion beyond this life. But if there is life after death, I suspect I will have more important things on my ethereal mind than monster collectibles.

And I might find a corner for FMoF 8 (13 Ghosts) or 32 (Model Custominzing Contest results)

I'm still going with my previous selections:

Okay. Here are the three monster toys/collectibles I'd take on my round-the-word cruise where I'd end up marooned on a desert island:

1. Aurora Bride of Frankenstein

2. Aurora Mummy

3. Revell Brother Rat Fink

Were it complete with the original cards, it would perhaps be my number #1.

Although I might choose the Revell Rat Fink instead of the Brother Rat Fink....

Or, if the toy genie could grant you three additions to your collection, what would they be?

My top two would be a MIB Mad, Mad, Mad Scientist Laboratory:

And a mint unused SPP Creature-Wolfman wallet:

I had both of these as a kid. It's too difficult for me to choose a #3 above all others though. I have too many wants vying for that slot.

This thread was only for entertainment purposes. Just having fun. I see no reason to bump the thread to just cut a negative slice of pie out of it. ;D There is a saying. "Blowing out another's candle will not make yours shine brighter".

Imo, monster item collecting while having fun is what site is all about. Once again, maybe I didn't get the memo on that. I am a serious collector and it is one of my greatest joys in life. Has been for decades. If others are getting out of it or turning away from it, I am sure they have their reasons. I hope that people that love to collect still have the means to do so. I also hope that those who are moving away from collecting, is due to changing passions and are not forced to to do it.

>Imo, monster item collecting while having fun is what site is all about.<

With all respect "thm," that is not what this site is all about; it is part of what this site is about. Or at least, used to be about.

It was about the gimcracks and geegaws, yes - but it was even more about the films of wonder that caused those things to be made.

And about the great books and plays that those films were based on.

And about the deep imaginations of the gifted men and women who created those films and those books.

And about how all the above touched our minds and souls.

>Once again, maybe I didn't get the memo on that.<

Because one such little note could never hope to encompass that. It is a matter of the whole, expansive warp and woof of what The World of Wonder is.

There are still sub-forums on UMA for movies, books and all those other things. This particular sub-forum though is for specifically monster toys, which for whatever reason you've labelled "gimcracks and geegaws".

What in the world are "gimcracks and geegaws"? Seriously, I've never heard that expression. I guess I should get out more.

What in the world are "gimcracks and geegaws"?

Showy objects of little use or value.

I see no reason to bump the thread to just cut a negative slice of pie out of it.

While I'm at it:
(1) Remco Mini Monster Creature from the Black Lagoon (non-glow)
(2) Crestwood House Monster Series Frankenstein Book
(3) Wolfman Monster Ball (http://www.universalmonsterarmy.com/forum/index.php?topic=27264.msg444975#msg444975 (http://www.universalmonsterarmy.com/forum/index.php?topic=27264.msg444975#msg444975))

Thank you, Mike, you are the UMA's thesaurus.

I did basically know what a geegaw was, but I used Mr. Webster's definition, anyway.

I knew what geegwaw what nots and play pretties were from my granny. That's what she called everything that was simply an aesthetic bauble despite its genre.

I had a completely different definition of "play pretties".

-Craig

I agree with this. I did not mean to imply that this site is only about the items. I actually meant collecting monster stuff is all about having fun. I love a great discussion about monster/horror movies, but I am a tangible guy. I like to have items that represent the characters I love and admire. So my love for monsters is not only watching the films, but owning figures from these films. I consider them works of art. ;D

This was hard and my choices will probably change over time...but apologies if my picks aren't very monster related.
