Title: Universal Monsters VHS Artworks
Post by: crissrudd4554 on November 17, 2014, 11:06:17 PM
As I'm sure most of you know I already had a thread where I posted most of these but for some reason many of them are not showing now. Rather than simply repost, I decided to make a new thread so its a little more organized. Sorry that they disappeared before. Don't know how that happened. When I find time I'll restore the links to the old thread. For those who haven't seen the original thread here I share the art works used on the Universal Monster VHS releases. If anyone has more to add feel free to post!

I'm currently updating some of these but figured I'd share what I have at the moment since I had shared these in the old thread but of course are not showing now. These are my fan made BluRay covers which feature the VHS artworks instead of the original posters. I left the back covers untouched from the actual BluRay covers. Dracula is an update while Frankenstein is a new addition. Incase the images don't show a link is provided which should work.

I remember the VHS artworks when I was a kid at my grandparents house and they were big in to the Universal Monsters and I saw all the awesome VHS covers. This was when DVDs where popular before blue rays.

"Spectacular price of $14.99 each"? And we complain about the price of that 31 movie boxed set.

Well for starters, the narrator's reading is different, they reveal the Collections titles in text form instead of showing the covers, the ending is longer and reveals more about their promotion

I noticed that. I just thought you meant something like an alternate take or something. The marketing info was very interesting, though.

Well it is the first time I saw a CC promo WITHOUT the '90s Monster crest which they usually showed at the end so that was kinda odd. Interesting to see clips from Invisible Man and The Mummy which they usually didnt.

I wonder where these were shown. Maybe on a promo tape sent to video stores back then?

That makes sense. I used to get stuff like that when I worked at a music/video store (remember those?).

Found this nice copy of the Murders in the Rue Morgue artwork on some Russian movie site. Not much different than the one I have but its slightly wider. I was gonna ask the uploader if he had it logo free but it of course is one of those sites where they have to send you an email to activate your account and of course I've received no email! Errr!

This is just a random post but I have noticed that, so far, The Invisible Man films are the only ones that I have artworks for the original film and its sequels (He also makes a cameo in A&C meet Frankenstein and I even have that artwork).

Yep, that's the only complete set. Unless you want to count the 4 A&C Meet The Monsters films as a set? The art on those are some of my favorites!  :)

I would probably add "Meet the Killer - Boris Karloff". No monsters, but a fun film.

I wish I still had it but about 12 or 13 years ago we got a video catalog in the mail (might have been Movies Unlimited, not sure. I remember there was an image from Some Like It Hot on the cover) which had an Abbott & Costello Monsters VHS set. It wasn't the same set released around 2000. This set had the tapes from the early 1990's and also had Meet The Killer Boris Karloff!

Was it a black & white cover with a grey and white portrait of A & C?

I always thought Meet the Killer should be an official A&C Meet The Monsters movie, because it stars Universal's #1 horror star. Hold That Ghost is one of their best movies, but it doesn't have Karloff, or even a real ghost.

Actually, it's a homemade DVD set with cut & paste back cover art (the front art is the grey A&C cover you posted). The actual films are from the A&C box set. My brother did it to hold me over until Universal does a proper set. They may never get around to it, so I'm grateful for what I have.

I guess I'm part of a small minority who actually likes '43 Phantom. I just watched it in its entirety last weekend and still am quite fond of it. Yes it will forever live in the shadow of its iconic predecessor but its still a good film. I think if they had gone with the idea of the Phantom being the father it would have been a better film. I do think its a shame that Phantom is the only film in the new set without any additional films. Why not include The Climax or something? Afterall that was originally conceived as a sequel to '43 Phantom and I think if She-Wolf of London is included with the Wolf Man films than Climax should be with Phantom. Or even better just package '25 and '43 Phantom together! If Warner Bros. are willing to package public domain adaptations of Oz with the '39 Wizard of Oz why can't Universal do the same with Phantom. Yes I know they're two different studios but I'm just saying.

Absolutely, Criss, that's what all of us have been asking. These cheap horror DVD sets with 50 movies for ten bucks include the Chaney Phantom, why can't the original studio do that. I understand if the cheapskates don't want to spend the money to fully restore it, but at least include a crappy print as an extra or something. It just makes the Universal sets seem incomplete.

I was always a bit puzzled by this cover. Note the redone Classic Collection banner? Was this released before the other reissues which have the Classic Monster Collection banner? Was Universal thinking of revamping the CC but with the poster arts? It should be noted this tape was reissued with the CMC banner.

No I have the tape shown above. It's from 1999. Anyways for whatever reason I'm glad they changed the banner. I like to think those brilliant VHS artworks from the early 90s are synonymous with the Classic Collection label.
Title: Re: Universal Monsters VHS Artworks

1999 was the first DVD release and the new '99 VHS set had the same movie one sheet box art. Don't know why the Mummy VHS was different? The Mummy DVD had the same banner as the others.

Yes its very strange especially because there is one with the same banner as the DVD. Since the cover I showed before was the only tape as far as I know with that alternate Classic Collection banner, I say that this one came out second. I have the one I posted before however which does say 1999.

This is just a random post but I have noticed that, so far, The Invisible Man films are the only ones that I have artworks for the original film and its sequels (He also makes a cameo in A&C meet Frankenstein and I even have that artwork).
The one you don't have is Invisible Ray but they didn't even release that in the line.

Yes, but it is about an invisible person, unlike INVISIBLE RAY (which is not about an invisible guy named "Ray").

SHE WOLF OF LONDON has no actual werewolf, but gets included in the WM set because you don't really know that till the end. ;D

No it was a stand alone but since I had found the artwork I figured I'd post it. Haha

Well good news is I know the magazine that had the A&C Monsters VHS set that had the early '90s tapes plus Meet the Killer Boris Karloff. It was the 2003 edition of Critics Choice Big Book of Movies. Sad news is I still havent found it. :(

Something I'm amazed is I've found many of the arts for the sequels to a lot of films but not the original films. Put it this way. I thought I would have found Frankenstein before I found House of Frankenstein!

Kinda makes sense to me.  There must be many collectors who would like to get a copy of the artwork for the original films - but far fewer who want them all enough to spend the necessary money.  Economics.  (Or just smaller fan base.)

Funny enough I had a dream last night that I found a B&W copy of The Wolf Man artwork on some website. Might be time for me to get hunting again ;)

Old news but anyways I found the magazine. It was a 2003 edition of Critics Choice Big Book of Movies. Anyways heres the set I was talking about. Never seen this set outside of this magazine.

A collection that finally includes Killer!
though "finally" is the wrong words as this was probably next to the first collection (besides laser-disc)

Those VHS box sets were the absolute coolest from back in the day.

I wish it had been in the "Meet the Monsters" DVD set.  :(
