Title: Renzi Car-- So it WAS released with the decal after all !!!
Post by: mjaycox on October 12, 2014, 08:23:38 PM
I've seen this decal in ads for the Renzi mobile before, but I thought the common wisdom was that it was not actually adhered to the cars that were sold...

What a find.

My prediction? that is going to be one expensive decal...

Not quite sure how the decal would have originally been applied......there is a raised line of plastic in the molding where I thought it would have been applied to the door. It has no chance of laying flat in the door area....and yet the view given of the backside of decal leads me to believe it made good contact with the Monster Mobile when applied....hum........

I appears that this is more like a sticker, than a model kit type of wet transferred decal. It also looks like somebody cut it down from what was probably a rectangle.

According to the photos and seller's description the obvious sticker residue is only on the passenger side of the car. The seller is unclear as to whether or not there were stickers on both sides of the Monster Mobiles. Of course it could have varied greatly on what was then cheap toys. Certainly not cheap now.

It's a little weird that a Brontosaurus is on the lower right side of the sticker. I know dinosaurs were called "monsters" on some '60s toys but you would think there would be something more standard represented with those bats like a skull for example. And, yeah, I know "Brontosaurus" never really existed according to modern paleontology (it's Apatosaurus), but in the Monsterkid '60s the toys were labeled as "Brontosaurus" so that's correct concerning the toys.

It's also strange that there is no flat smooth area for the sticker, like the Haunted Hulk sail for example. It was either poor planning or the sticker is suspect. And, it does look trimmed, as Mike mentioned. It could still be legit and just be thrown on at the last minute in the Renzi manufacturing process. Cheap toys in the '60s are infamous for slapdash quality control which only adds to their charm for weirdos like us.  ;D

I'm too old (and stubborn) to change.  For me there will always be a Brontosaurus and Pluto will always be a planet.

Lucky I was born after that whole Piltdown Man hassle was already settled.

How long before someone is selling replacement "Monster Mobile" stickers on eBay?

I'm less jealous of the sticker, than I am of the fact that he has Pink Frankenstein/Gargoyle and Green Wolfman/Mummy

I would like to have that variant... I have owned three separate Renzi cars over the years, and they have always had the exact opposite color scheme

Did the Renzi mobiles you remember come with only the one sticker? Where was the sticker, or stickers, attached? On the passenger side door or elsewhere?

Id say one sticker as far as i can remember but anything was possible back in those days. Two of my aunts worked at Renzi and Come Play Plastics which was a local (Worcester) blow plastic factory. Renzi was italian and a lot of italian people worked there. Renzi Jr. is still around and has some of the old molds but not the monster mobile because i asked him about it. the mold was destroyed. He has the King Kong Bank mold still.  Also. Matt! i have the opposite version of you... i have hot pink Frankie & mint green wolfman. But i also have black wheels!

It went for $1,875.00! Someone is very happy today.

The sticker is too big, so they may have stopped putting it on cars at the factory early on. That means someone that worked there might have saved a box of stickers from the dumpster. Could be sitting in their damp basement or leaky attic right now.

The average Renzi price, a few recent cases notwithstanding, is around $650-800.

This car went for $1875

Therefore, my question is answered: that is a $1000 dollar sticker.

For THAT price, a sticker better Scratch and Sniff ME, not the other way around!

I'm probably one of those notwithstanding cases, but I had to shell out $1,500 for mine. Like this one with its sticker, mine has a unique feature that sets it apart from other Renzi monster cars it has orange monsters. I've never seen another with genuine orange monsters. A nice Halloween orange. And like this one with the sticker, the auction for the one with orange monsters was highly "publicized." By the time the auction closed, we already had pages of posts about it. A unique feature + lots of online buzz = high closing price.

I'm gonna guess it didn't have any. And I'll bet I have a 50/50 chance of being right!  ;D

I had a bid for $1,500 in for this car, and I already own one (thanks to an awesome  fellow UMA member)   It was worth that to me for the only known example with a sticker. And it had opposite colored monsters.

I'm gonna guess it didn't have any. And I'll bet I have a 50/50 chance of being right!  ;D

Some of the other  renzi  blowmold cars came bagged with header cards. ive  seen an ambulance with a Dr Kildare card and a blowmold phone by renzi. So  it could be possible. I would love to see the art on  one if it existed...

Of course, there's also a 50/50 chance that I'm wrong!  :(

I'd love to see that header card, too!  :)

You all may be on to something and maybe not. the ones i got from my aunt who worked at Renzi's did not bring me home freshly packaged items...most of them were throw aways with mold flaws etc. that's why i say i had a LOT of them back in the day because my aunt knew i loved this s**t and when she saw them discarded she would take them home to me. When i saw them at stores i would swear they were (despite their size) bin toys in big wire baskets. but then again I'm 59 this week and have been hit in the head a million times.... But i do remember the past better than the present. but the monster moblie sticker very well could have been on a plastic coating but i don't remember such packaging....

Still not difficult to have both versions....one car. Renzi did several toys using the same wheels......I display mine with big white wheels both front and back...just my preference.

Hep, I bought the Monster Car with both sets of wheels and the decal in 1955 at the gift shop on the top floor of the Empire State Building....when I was 2 1/2. Ha! No no no......the thread has been about the decal showing up on an E-bay auction.....afew posts back I credited my decal to that auction and my use of Photoshop...ha! Or was it the gift shop at Disney World in 1949? I may be confused...ha!

Are we all pretty much in agreement that the decal was originally rectangular? And that this is a cut-away example of how it originally was?

I would think so. If it's die-cut, it's pretty weird. If I were making a copy to put on a car, I'd make it a rectangle.

The car doesn't appear to be able to accommodate a sticker of that size. It looks like a cut-down header card to me, especially with the extra information on it. Item numbers and copyright information are usually put on packaging and somewhere on the toy mold, not on a decorative sticker. The stickers for my Haunted Hulk, Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea vehicles, or Hamilton's Invaders toys don't have any of that extra information.

Just click on the pic for the large view. I can't see any edges of the sticker. I does show the sticker on the car, but there's no way to tell if they were ever shipped out that way. Some times things change from ad to store. It's a mystery yet to be solved!  :)

They might have just trimmed down the sticker and put it on the side of the car for the purpose of showing it in the ad. The surface of the car sides aren't flat and don't look like they were originally meant to accommodate a sticker. The sticker was probably on the packaging originally, whether it was a cello bag or header card. We agonize over details as collectors that ad guys didn't take as seriously for cheap toys back in '60s. They just got it done and moved on to the next. Us twisted monster collectors have elevated their status to high art. All of this is supposition on my part in regards to the Renzi Monster Car, but based on similar toys I saw/bought as a '60s Monster Kid and chased back down as a current Monster Kid.

Aw...the mystery continues. Let me say this....to gather both sets of black and white wheels in both large and small size it was necessary for me to purchase several Renzi large blowmold items. 2 of those Renzi items had stickers attached to them. My bet is the Renzi Monster Car did come with the sticker attached. The auction that started this conversation  clearly shows glue residue on one side of the car's door panel....also....when super-sizing the catalog ad which contained the Monster Car it is very visible that the decal molds over the protruding ridge on the car door...it is definitely stuck on. Plus consider this....the Renzi blowmold items that I have purchased, including the Monster Car are large. Some very large. And very cheap...originally. I just can't believe they were individually wrapped. It would be enough of a nightmare for a retailer to find space to display several Renzi items....but add to that having them wrapped? Not a picture I can believe in. I'm gonna be good with doing another decal with Mike's template in a rectangular shape and call it good enough....

The car had sticker residue on it on the drivers side in the auction didn't it?  am I imagining that? The sticker had a sticky side. And looked just like a 60's sticker.
It was a cheap blowmold toy, made in the 60's... I'm sure they were real worried if the sticker would stay on the car. Probably not...
Its very obvious it isn't part of a header card, its a sticker. And I will believe the cello wrap statement when I see one, OK maybe two.
All evidence in my opinion points to the car ( at least at one point) was released with a sticker on it.....we have an advertisement showing one. An auction with one. But yes we also have  More cars without one than we can count, maybe they all fell off? Maybe the renzi company stopped putting them on after the initial release? Who knows...

I just can't believe they were individually wrapped. It would be enough of a nightmare for a retailer to find space to display several Renzi items....but add to that having them wrapped? Not a picture I can believe in.

All interesting and valid points.

ill ask A (Anthony) J Renzi Jr. what he remembers if anything...?  next time i see him in Leominster area....

Yes, please do! And ask him whether he has any boxes of leftover Renzi Monster Mobiles to give away because they're just taking up valuable storage space.

What is so cool is that we have ourselves an example of the Monster Car Sticker. I made mine just on reg printer paper and cut it out. Any suggestions on where or how to get one made on real sticker material? Something I can do on my own computer printer?

Ask at Staples or a similar store. They should be able to sell you something.

Fellow Renzi Monster Car owners! Armed with Mike Scott's beautiful visual of the newly discovered Renzi decal I had a professional print shop do me a sheet of Monster Car stickers. They are 2"x4" and are gorgeous! There is a slight white border on each sticker that needs to be cut away before applying the decal. I am keeping 2 or these for my personal Monster Car and will gladly mail one of the rest to any UMA owner of a Renzi Monster Car....just send me your full name and address. We are family....I'd like to share with you, and again, these are absolutely beautiful!         Bud

Oh...the wife has a trimmer/cutter if anyone wants me to trim the slight white border off....

The stickers look great.

I'm not into repops either but on some of those 50 year old plus toys a really accurately reproduced sticker isn't a bad thing. The decades are tough on some of those stickers. I went that route with my Haunted Hulk because the sail I purchased was missing the stickers and the new ones I put on made it look like it did back in 1963.

Here's my Renzi mobile with its nice replacement stickers courtesy of bigbud. I owe you one buddy!
I noticed when I went to put the sticker on the passenger side there was old glue residue along the topside of where the sticker would go, and it was about the same length as the new sticker, never even noticed it before, crazy!
Mine is the black tire version as well, but i have an extra set of whitewalls with little front wheels if i decide i want to change it out.
i noticed i have opposite color monsters than buddy and monster bob.

And i personally have to let Frankie drive, i mean c'mon!

I usually think of the Renzi "Hot Rod" as the coupe (one seat). I don't think I've ever seen the 2 seat in light blue, before. Don't the figures pop into holes in the seats? (No holes.)

Same mold, same wheels. But different color, and yes it has the floorboards cutout for figures to sit in. And no center holes punched for the blowmold figures in the seat. I have pictures of mine loaded up with monsters in the other renzi car thread.
this is the version someone on ebay painted black and put recast resin figures in and sold for $800.

It's just a two seater version of a blue hot rod, which is common. It was always a $20-$35 item, and I myself would not be a buyer, even at that.

The Monster Car itself is not what I would call "rare"...they used to pop up very regularly at shows and such, usually priced at $45-$75. I saw large numbers of them over the years that were in the stream for sale. Unfortunately, with forums such as this, knowledge gets spread, and so more collectors want them, dealers hoard them, low end dealers keep them, etc. The same thing happened with the Halloween Bucket Head, which everyone but a few would shun for $250 just a few years back.

I paid $35 for my light blue one just for the tires. But then I realized my ahi figures fit in it perfectly so now it stays just the way it is, loaded with monsters.
I would say its worth whatever someone wants to pay. But I wouldnt pay over $50 myself.
And I definately wouldn't buy the fake one that was made.
But if you dont want to pay $1,500 to $2,000 for a real monster mobile this is a cheap alternative. And it helped me cope until I found my monster mobile!

True enough I saw lots of them over the years , usually sold in the $75 - $125 area I recall when I had both the large Munster Car in the Display Box and the Loose Monster car I decided to Keep the Munsters car due to its TV tie in and orig packaging,  also in my opinion it was much rarer

Huh? Just the one, and a four seat sedan? No, what you need is two different hot rod coupes for your monsters so that they can do some street racing on the main drag! Complete with the Bride or Victim holding the starting flag! Now that would be a wild setup.

Nothing wrong with buying something I don't really want dirt cheap and selling it for a huge profit.  (I just turn around and spend the money paying going market price for one of my grails.)

While I am not secretive about what I buy things for, I wouldn't rub it in the face of prospective buyers.  If they ask, I don't mind telling them the truth.

My best buy was a wooden jigsaw puzzle.  I knew it was a bargain at $5.00, but I didn't know it was collectible until I looked it up on eBay 'cause I wanted to buy another like it.  After having the fun of putting it together, I sold it for $736.00 on eBay.  Had the buyer asked, I would have told her its history.

Nothing wrong at all with reselling something found cheap.

My best in the field find was an Apollo Lander Module Contractors model MINT, with original shipping box, found for $100. I kept it for a year and a half while I enjoyed it and researched it. Once I listed it on ebay, I was surprised to  get $1775.00 for it since they usually reached a top bid of around $700. Mine was special with the box that listed the production number. It was number 16 off the line so didn't suffer from the yellowing associated with direct sunlight later models did, and that bit of research paid off.

I don't mind sharing my score price. If it doesn't sell, I still love it and am honestly looking for those repo figures to put in it. The knowledge of the rarity of this piece was learned here when I first discovered this site. I had a 1964 Penny's Christmas catalog with the Renzi listed showing the decals that people were unsure of being on the car so I posted that catalog page then for everyone's benefit. I reached out yesterday to find the decals if available along with the monster figures. When the figures don't meet the reserve & $87 was last bid two years ago I am hoping the $500 is a fair opening price for near mint body.   https://www.ebay.com/itm/AJ-RENZI-MONSTER-MOBILE-CAR-034-FIGURES-034-1960-039-S-ORIGINAL-FRANKENSTEIN-/151655305977?nma=true&si=UOoD%252FV9m0OtYJNjAsj17eKpS%252FfI%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 (https://www.ebay.com/itm/AJ-RENZI-MONSTER-MOBILE-CAR-034-FIGURES-034-1960-039-S-ORIGINAL-FRANKENSTEIN-/151655305977?nma=true&si=UOoD%252FV9m0OtYJNjAsj17eKpS%252FfI%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557)  (https://scontent-dfw5-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/29683328_10214131139585850_6558738597607339063_n.jpg?_nc_cat=0&oh=78448142135cc7f90a25482e389ffa47&oe=5B33D27B)

What a ripoff!  It is clearly priced at 66.  (Price gouger.)

Interesting that the original car used an untrimmed label and just let it partially cover the spare tire and whatever other feature was in the way.

Man, the Frankenstein wind-up was only 66, too?

I don't mind sharing my score price. If it doesn't sell, I still love it and am honestly looking for those repo figures to put in it. The knowledge of the rarity of this piece was learned here when I first discovered this site. I had a 1964 Penny's Christmas catalog with the Renzi listed showing the decals that people were unsure of being on the car so I posted that catalog page then for everyone's benefit. I reached out yesterday to find the decals if available along with the monster figures. When the figures don't meet the reserve & $87 was last bid two years ago I am hoping the $500 is a fair opening price for near mint body.   https://www.ebay.com/itm/AJ-RENZI-MONSTER-MOBILE-CAR-034-FIGURES-034-1960-039-S-ORIGINAL-FRANKENSTEIN-/151655305977?nma=true&si=UOoD%252FV9m0OtYJNjAsj17eKpS%252FfI%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 (https://www.ebay.com/itm/AJ-RENZI-MONSTER-MOBILE-CAR-034-FIGURES-034-1960-039-S-ORIGINAL-FRANKENSTEIN-/151655305977?nma=true&si=UOoD%252FV9m0OtYJNjAsj17eKpS%252FfI%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557)  (https://scontent-dfw5-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/29683328_10214131139585850_6558738597607339063_n.jpg?_nc_cat=0&oh=78448142135cc7f90a25482e389ffa47&oe=5B33D27B)
You do realize the one you have isn't the monster mobile right? The original is dark blue, almost purple. And there are no holes cut in it for dolls to sit. The figures are blowmold in pairs and they punch into the seats  with a plug thats molded into them. The light blue version is not as rare and was made for barbies etc..

This car just doesn't say "Barbie", to me! A red Mustang says "Barbie".  ;D

Though it wouldn't surprise me that they've been made, I've never seen any.

Pair Barbie and Midge for a double date with the AHI Frankenstein and Phantom in the baby blue sedan for a twin bill at the drive-in!

All you have to do is find someone who has them and convince them to make copies!  ;D

Contact this guy and see what can be arranged:

          www.MUCKYCHRIS.com (http://www.MUCKYCHRIS.com)

You'll need to beg/borrow/steal a pattern.  Maybe he could make various other monsters as passengers.  A Creature would be nice.  (Or how about an all '50's sci-fi car?  Creature, Mole Man, Mutant, IT! From Beyond Space, etc.?)

He regularly marries monster/sci-fi heads to other bodies.  If you could get a cheap non-monster Renzi car passenger, he could copy that to make the base.  Then he could copy any monster head to marry to it.

I don't think the head would have to be to scale.  He makes the same figures in many various sizes.

What do you think?

Hello guys and ghouls! Been away awhile, but haven't forgotten you! The Renzi Monster Car has several possible original tire configurations....white large tires, white large back and small white front tires, black large tires and large black rear with small black front tires. My monster car has all possibilities though I have it displayed with large white rear and small white front tires. So for those of you that are as picky as I am this is a HEADS UP- on Ebay at this moment are two relatively common Renzi toys that have the small white and the small black tires that go perfectly with our monster cars! Both are airplanes....one is a g i joe type plane that  is BIN at $35 and the other is a WW 2 looking plane currently with no bids starting at $24.93.  These wheels are hard to come by, and when they do appear the price of the toy they are on usually is high. So here's a chance for you guys to up-grade that monster car! See ya around!    Big Bud

The Renzi Monster Car has several possible original tire configurations....white large tires, white large back and small white front tires, black large tires and large black rear with small black front tires. My monster car has all possibilities though I have it displayed with large white rear and small white front tires.

What we need to know though is the performance characteristics of the white tires versus the black tires. Which compound has superior grip characteristics on each of the different household flooring surfaces likely to be encountered? E.g. carpet, hardwood, linoleum, vinyl sheet, ceramic tile, porcelain tile, slate, marble, granite, concrete, etc? And how about outside on asphalt, concrete, interlocking paving stones, gravel and dirt? On wet versus dry surfaces?

Now I'm assuming the smaller front tires would lower ET's on the drag strip, but how otherwise does switching to smaller front tires impact the car's handling characteristics on various tracks? Say super speedways vs. short tracks vs. paved road courses vs. dirt tracks? Which tire configuration would you recommend for each of the various track types?

 ???
