We've talked about the connection between rock music and horror culture in a number of other threads. Here's some of my favorite magazines and comic books from the horror/rock nexus:

I bought this when it first came out. I love the Tom Sutton art in Marvel Premiere #50, and how all the characters from the album were worked into the story. 8)

Great stuff Horrorhunter. I have the 70s Alice Marvel comic---one of my favorite books. I still have to get "The Last Temptation" book. Someone is re-releasing it soon, but I hear it's gonna cost around $40.

Maybe you haven't heard yet, but I was involved in a drunken brawl and spent the night in jail. I apologize to my friends for engaging in behavior unbecoming of a UMA member.
It does prove though, that even at 65 yrs old I'm still a butt-kicking rockstar! LOL

I love this movie. I used to have VHS tape of it when I was in high school. The movie embarrassed Gene and Paul for a long time, but I think they realize now there's a cult following. It's one of those "so bad it's good" flicks. We talked about this in another thread before, but I think one of those Kiss anthology video sets is the only way to get that film on DVD. It's on my list.

I've been working feverishly on a Misfits Fiend Club Facebook page (started on March 1, 2014); the page includes all incarnations of the band from 1977-1983 and 1995-present and is kind of a history lesson on the band. I've uploaded all audio/video that I've found of The Misfits 78-83, Samhain 84-86, a few early Danzig shows, The Misfits™ third appearance and select shows from 1996-2004 (included one with Myke Hideous on vocals and one with Zoli Téglás) and just today I put up a Danzig/Doyle Misfits set.
I am trying to organize/catalog all Misfits photos from 77-83; each line up has it's own photo album, including line ups from 1996-2002. There are tons of pics I've found that as of a few months ago I had never seen! There are also photo albums for the Crimson Ghost, the Bleeder's DIE-gest, my Misfits stuff, Misfits flyers/show announcements from 77-83 and more.
The notes section is packed with notes about various Misfits/Misfits™ albums, I've created a column called Flicks for Fiends where I write about horror/sci fi movies that influenced Glenn Danzig and The Misfits™. There are also notes on other aspects of The Misfits/Misfits™; line ups, songwriting credits, lawsuits and more.
If you dig either era of The Misfits then check it out!

That's really cool site zombiehorror. It's too bad Danzig and Jerry Only can't put aside their differences and do a proper Misfits reunion.
Let me ask you something, on one of your clips, you identify Doyle and Michael Graves performing with the Marky Ramone and Dez line-up. Did Graves and Doyle make a special appearance or something? They're not in the band again right?
I always thought the Graves/Chud line-up was acceptable alternative if Glenn wasn't going to be in the band.

Correct, Mike came back for a short time; I believe to kind of set things right with Jerry and the fans. But it was only for 7 shows and when he left (again) Doyle (who hadn't yet left the band) went too. Currently the band is Jerry, Jerry Jr. (rhythm guitar), Marc Rizzo (guitar), Eric Arce (drums); Marc is filling in for Dez who is on medical leave....we'll see if he returns!?

Listen Folks,a lot of people have been inquiring about my well being, well I have been going thru some health problems, but I have been taking care of this situation.About 2 weeks ago the Doc removed a Malignant Neoplasm from my larynyx. It was in early stage one,so this is a good sign .I am in good positive spirits and can actually speak well.I couldn't for months.Even while I was on tour and trying to sing.It was hard.In the middle of the tour Jerry finally said "go to the Doctor !"Which I was Planning to do as soon as tour was over.Any way I feel better but I still have some medical procedures to endure.I know a lot of folks have been wondering .I hope this clears up a few things for people. I can still Play Guitars ,but at the moment I can't sing for my own band,or The Misfits or Queen, for that matter. Here's some advice ,if you want to go thru all this type of medical fun, smoke em if you got em.Please no sympathy massages, that's not Punk Rock.

My Misfits Fiend Club Facebook site was shut down by K&L Gates claiming Cyclopian Music, Inc. trademark infringement, namely Misfits (Design), Misfits; even though there are a bunch of other Misfits, Misfits Fiend Club and Fiend Club sites that use those very same images. I was never contacted directly about my page but just came home the other day and found that Facebook had shut it down. I have started a new page and will rebuild if the old one is not restored, keeping in mind not to post the Misfits logo or Misfits (design/skull).

The correlation between Horror and Hard Rock/Heavy Metal is undeniable. I played drums professionally for 25 years. One of the bands I was in during the 80's was called Tyrant. First pic is the album I recorded with the band on Metal Blade records. They had done one album prior to me joining and another after I left. That's me on the right in the 2nd pic. I've mellowed considerably since then. :)

That's amazing! We used to stock Metal Blade records at Zed & I'm pretty sure we carried that Tyrant album. Small world. I love the drums. I always wanted to be a madman drummer like Keith Moon.

Thanks Mord. Most record stores like Zed carried Metal Blade records back then. A lot of bands got their start on that label and their subsidiaries. And yes, Keith Moon was a madman. ;D Here's a pic of us at the Troubadour in Hollywood on the strip.

That is too bad but glad that you are willing to continue your love for the band by rebuilding the website.
I have been a Coop fan for well over thirty years now and even if I don't care for some of the newer records I applaud the man for hanging in there for this many years. Hasn't slowed down a bit. I was fortunate enough to have found a collected edition of the Last Temptation Comics at a Garage Sale for a dollar. Written by Neil Gaiman of Sandman fame. A great read for those interested. The track Sideshow off the album really echoed his early style of music from the Nightmare era.
Not sure if there is any Calgarians on this site but back in the nineties there was a great local band called the Forbidden Dimension. The singer went by the name Jackson Phibes. He was a huge fan of all the things we love here at UMA. The band wore ghoulish make-up similar to the misfits and their tunes had a great pyscho-billy sound with some great surf riffs. Great Stuff.

That is awesome man! I remember that band. I lived in SoCal for a while when I was kid. My dad and I would go up to Tower Records and I'd pick out cool horror themed metal records. I was like 8,9,10 yrs old but I'd tell my dad to buy stuff like Grim Reaper "See you in Hell," Mercyful Fate "Melissa," Venom "Possessed," Iron Maiden "Killers," Slayer "Show no Mercy" etc.
We used to listen to this radio station KMET. We'd stay up late on the weekends and listen to the "Metal Shop." I'm pretty sure they played Tyrant. BTW: Lizzy Borden was another cool horror/rock guy on Metal Blade records back then.

You hit the nail on the head Geezer! Those are the bands of that time period, some who were also on Metal Blade records. I had a lot of fun in the 80's and that was when metal was at it's peak.

Being a musician, my favorite ara of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal is between 1966-1986.Those twenty years of heavy music really solidified my musical hunger for not just Metal and Hard Rock. But....Punk and Dark Wave.

Too cool!!! Its funny I was in my basement Saturday working on the lab and I came across my Legions of The Dead cassette. I had that one and the Too Late To Pray tape. Pretty much anything on Metal Blade / Combat / or RoadRunner I trusted to be good stuff. Im a metal head from the 80s. Metal and horror have always gone hand in hand. We'd drink some beer, listen to Celtic Frost then watch Wizard Of Gore or something similar. I was all about the blood and guts then. Now Im more into the 1930s-1960s but I cut my teeth on gore lol.

What a small world. You're absolutely right about Metal and Horror! "Legions of the Dead" was Tyrant's 1st album. I came on board right after.

The Classic Coop in the mid 70's I think.
There were a bunch of Cooper Comics released in 2014 and abit into 2015. I think maybe six issues. Anybody check them out? Just wondering if they were good or not. Always wanted his Marvel Premier issue but could never find it and when I could I couldn't afford. LOL
-
Great sketch Gossamer! I love the Coop. You should be able to find the 70s Marvel Alice Cooper issue for a reasonable price. I picked up one for like $10. Not mint condition, but very good. I have all the Dynamite Cooper comic books, but haven't read them yet. The illustrations look pretty cool though.
On a side note, Cooper was here (Detroit) the other day and talked to a local journalist. In the article he reminisced how in his youth he used to walk up to the movie theaters in Detroit and watch films like Creature from the Black Lagoon. He also said he really likes "It Follows." Cooper is particularly proud that the film-maker is a Detroit guy.

I love Charlie's style as well as Keith Moon's - but since ferocious drumming such as Keith's is always appreciated (and rightly so!) I have made it a point in the past to sing the praises of Charlie, as well! His style is just perfect for the Stones, and some of the late 70's and early 80's tracks have some very creative drum fills from him. Of course his early 70's drumming on "Sway" is quite unique, too! I'd also point out the Voodoo Lounge album for more great Charlie work, and "Gunface" from Bridges to Babylon.
-
I love Charlie, too. He has one of the most distinctively recognizable drumming style in all of rock. I really love his playing on "Exile on Main St.". I can't believe he's still touring & kicking serious ass.
-
I agree gents Charlie is a amazing drummer and have more appreciation for him and the Stones after reading Keith Richards book Life.
Geezer that premier Cooper comic was kind of a Holy Grail for me. We had three comic stores in the city I grew up in and searched them constantly for it. Magical years of comics and Alice for me as I was into both. That book would never appear when I had the money for it. But when I could afford it it had either a huge stupidly high price on it or it couldn't be found. I guess when the time is right I will get it. The chase is the fun part.
I was actually unaware that it was Dyamite that put out the newer Alice books. Honestly I have only read some of the Shadow books which were great. Now I am wondering if Alex Ross did any covers for the Alice Cooper series.
I lived right across the river from Detroit in Windsor. Yeah the Coop always was proud about the city. Thanks for posting that info. I totally see him checking out the horror flicks back in the day.

They probably did that to give him the long hair rock star look. Ugh.

I wonder if they gave the creator or exec of Creatch Rock Opera a raise or fired him. And how does Beetlejuice fit into that fiasco?
Oh the Horror of it all.
Easy dreadlock would be seaweed or is that what those are supposed to be?

Totally agree Mord. The first Sabbath album is a classic. They recorded it in 2 days. Tony Iommi's Fender Strat crapped out during these sessions so he used a backup Gibson SG he had which wound up becoming his primary guitar along with custom versions of it made by JayDee guitars and he still uses the first one he had made to this day.

I agree, spontaneity plays a huge part in the success of that first Sabbath album (as well as other great metal & punk lps). Too much time in the studio tends to sterilize the end results, imo.

I watched the making of Paranoid a little while back. The fact they used to start new tunes while jamming in clubs and Ozzy would make up lyrics on the spot. Often silly and later discarded but he would sing them in perfect tune. Sabboth were simply amazing. SO dark and spacey. Leading the

Cool stuff Hepcat. I always dig this song. They used to play this on the local alt rock station a lot. I don't know that much about the group though. Was this a one-time thing, or do they incorporate supernatural themes in other lyrics?

I agree with all you guys, but then again I chose "Geezer Butler" as my user name and the Black Sabbath movie poster for my avatar, so what do you expect?!!, lol.
Sonically, Sabbath pushed things further (and heavier) than Zeppelin, Cream, & Hendrix. But in terms of the evolution of heavy metal, Sabbath were pioneers aesthetically (as illustrated in the first album cover) and lyrically too. Jimmy Page flirted with occult themes but Sabbath just owned it. I've read and watched interviews with the Sabbath guys and they talk about the experience of watching horror films. That's the same vibe they wanted to capture, but while you're listening to their music. I think they nailed it perfectly.
Here's great quote from Rob Zombie: "Every cool riff has already been written by Black Sabbath. You're either playing it faster or slower or backwards, but they wrote it first."

A line in Roky Erickson's song "Stand For The Fire Demon" lets me know it was probably inspired by "Curse of the Demon" (especially since a former member of one of his backing bands said it was one of his favorite films). I won't give away which lyric gives me this impression...but also, "Casting the Runes" is the name of the story that "Curse of the Demon" is based on, and there is a live album from Roky with this title. It all adds up, I think.

Beck, Bogart & Appice. Great line up and album. Too bad it didn't last long. As a drummer I really liked Carmine's playing as well and his brother Vinny.
When he was in Vanilla Fudge, Carmen was big influence on John Bonham. Late 60s Deep Purple very much influenced by VF too. Always liked Fudge's version of "You Keep me Hangin On."
But yeah, Beck's version of "I ain't superstitious" is a classic. It's hard to remember, but Rod Stewart used to rock back in the day.

Rod Stewart has popped up at Beck performances in the past few years to sing that. Beck is so incredible to this day.

Recently deceased legendary actor Christopher Lee was a classically trained singer as well. He'd been applying his rich sonorous voice to the heavy metal genre in the past ten years. Here are his releases on CD:

Good call Hepcat. I'm not a big black metal guy, but Cradle of Filth is very popular. I did see Polish black metal band Behemoth one time. They rock corpse paint. Pretty heavy stuff.
In terms of old school rockers, I gotta give props to Judas Priest. Saw them in concert last week and they ruled as usual. Over the years Priest adopted some horror/darker themes in their songs and album covers. Check out the "Defenders of the Faith" and "Nostradamus" album covers for example. Also songs like "The Ripper," "Beyond the Realms of Death," and "Love Bites" kind of horror-ish.

Wow, that's crazy. Gory Glenn: you ever run into any of these metal guys out in LA? Either guys from your bands or other 80s era metal dudes?
I was back in SoCal a few years ago and went to the NAMM show in Anaheim. I met Kerry King and Dave Lombardo (one my favorite metal drummers). Meeting Glenn Hughes was the coolest though---I'm a huge Deep Purple fan. But there were hard rock and metal musicians all over the place there.

I don't really run into them anywhere other than Facebook as I'm rather tame these days and don't frequent the kinds of places I used to. I still talk to former band mates once in a great while but most of us 80's guys live different lives these days. :) There are a few that are still going strong. Saxon is still making records and touring. As a matter of fact they are touring the US right now which is pretty rare these days. They tend to stick to Europe. If you haven't seen them I highly recommend it.

Saw Deep Purple and Blue Oyster Cult last night. Great show.
In terms of 'monstery' songs, BOC performed "Godzilla" and "Don't Fear the Reaper." Both classics. Godzilla especially great song IMO.

A Halloween costume was key to Pat Benatar discovering the formula to launch her to stardom:
Halloween 1977 proved a pivotal night in Benatar's early, spandexed stage persona. Rather than change out of the costume she wore to a Halloween contest at the Cafe Figaro in Greenwich Village that evening, she went onstage at Catch a Rising Star in costume. Benatar said: "I was dressed as a character from this ridiculous B movie called Cat-Women of the Moon."
Audiences had previously responded to her performance with only polite applause, but that night the audience went wild. That lesson in presentation proved to be the key that launched her recording career. Here's her take on Emily Bronte's crazed woman:

According to the band, this will be Black Sabbath's last tour. I know they've been saying this since 1998, but I think they really mean it this time. They're in their mid 60s and Tony Iommi recently battled cancer. Geezer Butler (the real one, not me ;)) has said he no longer wants to tour. Ozzy the only one saying he'll continue solo career.
Either way I'll look forward to seeing them on this tour.

I read an article this weekend where they mentioned the possibility of Bill Ward coming on board. We'll have to wait & see. The guy did define heavy metal drumming for a whole generation (and then some).

I love to see, Ward behind the kit again. He was and still is still an influence on me as a musician. In my opinion, Ward is a great drummer
who by-the-way kept his chops/technique in check. ( Unlike Peter Criss. Poor, Peter)

Hammer of the Gods[/I]]In the delta of the Mississippi River ... they said that if an aspiring bluesman waited by the side of a deserted country crossroads in the dark of a moonless night, then Satan himself might come and tune his guitar, sealing a pact for the bluesman's soul and guaranteeing a lifetime of easy money, women, and fame.
Since Mississippi bluesman Robert Johnson had exploded into stardom seemingly overnight but died just as quickly at the age of 27, legend has it that he was among those who sold his soul to the devil at the crossroads. Here's Robert Johnson's Crossroads Blues:

I know their Eddie Cochran cover at the end is VERY sloppy, but hey, that was the untamed sound of 1970's punk rock! This is from 1980, and The Damned are even BETTER these days - absolutely amazing in concert last year...I would highly suggest seeing their concerts to anyone who really loves rock 'n' roll. The albums may not all be 100% perfect (what band's discography is?) but live they always pick the best stuff. Dave Vanian has a great voice and Captain Sensible plays a really wild and incredibly exciting guitar!

A major snowstorm prevented me from making it. I did however, get to see Bolin at The Bottom Line in NYC. He was promoting his solo album Teaser. One of the best concerts I ever saw. The guy was an amazing guitar player. He actually performed the Star Spangled Banner, and it was every bit as good as Hendrix's version. Another one we lost way too soon.

This thread began with the focus on magazines and comic books and somehow drifted to videos... which might be stretching the definition of "Memorable Memorabilia" a bit. But it's been a lot of fun every step of the way!
Black Francis frequently wrote lyrics dealing with science fiction and UFOs while with the Pixies, and continued doing so after he went solo under the Frank Black name. His 1996 album The Cult of Ray (the "Ray" being a reference to Ray Bradbury) featured the song Men in Black, which dealt with the popular MIB myth...

I went and saw Ghost last night and it was pretty awesome. I don't know if any of you are familiar with them but they blend horror in with their act quite well. They use a lot of religious imagery (the singer dresses as an evil Pope) and a good amount of their music has Satanic overtones. They have the people that work closely with them sign non-disclosure agreements when it comes to their identities because they like the mystique and want people to get into the showmanship of it.

Oh man, seeing Tommy Bolin lineup would have been unbelievable. I agree, very underrated guitar player. Check out Deep Purple "Phoenix Rising" dvd or blue ray if you can. Great documentary and concert. It's interesting, for years a lot of Purple fans hated the Tommy Bolin era lineup. Now, "Come Taste the Band" has taken on cult status. It's prob in my top five Purple records. That said, I'm still huge Ritchie Blackmore fan. So I had mixed feelings about seeing Deep Purple lineup without either Blackmore or Jon Lord. Just not the same.

Went to see Black Sabbath on Friday night. Great concert as usual. Performed some deeper tracks like "After Forever" and "Hand of Doom." Ozzy pretty much lost his voice, but you kind of expect that at this point. Tony Iommi and (the real) Geezer Butler were outstanding though. They're coming back in summer, so I'll get to see them one more time.
We've seen and heard "the retirement tour" with so many bands that don't mean it, but I think this really will be it. We may see some special performances here and there, but I think this is the last time we will see a Black Sabbath tour.

My favorite heavy bands back in the late 1970's - early 1980's were Zeppelin, Sabbath, Rush, Priest, ACDC. By the time bands like Metallica, and Guns and Roses, came onto the scene I was outgrowing the genre, and getting into other types of music. I too am a drummer from way back (52 years-old now). Saw lots of fantastic concerts in my time. One of the best shows I saw in the early 1980's was Ozzy Osbourne's very first concert as a solo artist, after he was booted out of Sabbath. His very first solo concert here (ever) in the 'States was in Towson, Maryland at Towson State University (Towson Center). Motorhead opened for them, and I absolutely hated them. In fact, almost everyone that left the arena that night hated Motorhead. They were fairly unknown at the time, and to me, they just soundly like a huge wall of noise…every song had the same tempo and double-kick beat. We had great seats (third row center). As I remember at the time, not many people were into Ozzy, and his first solo album had just come out, so I can remember when the tickets went on sale there was no line at all, and we walked right up and bought great seats. Who'd have thought? Ozzy and his band sounded stellar back then…Rhoads, Sarzo, Aldridge. Ozzy still had a great voice back then, and could hit all of the high notes. He also still had his "marbles", and was fairly coherent as well. So glad I got to see him back when he was young. I was a huge Sabbath fan before Ozzy went solo. I only saw Sabbath with Dio, on the Heaven and Hell Tour, and although it was a good album, to me, Sabbath was never the same without Ozzy singing lead. Dio is another metal celebrity who never appealed to me at all…hated his voice…too melodramatic for me. Anyway, to me, Sabbath were the first to inject real "horror" into rock music.

It's not rock, but Waxwork just released the soundtrack for Friday the 13th, Part 3 on vinyl today. There are 2 versions: regular cover w/ blood spattered hockey mask vinyl and lenticular cover w/ blue and red "3D glasses" vinyl. I won't lie, I'm pretty excited to be able to blast the disco theme next Halloween while handing out candy!

A classic from 1959:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SEllHMWkXEU (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SEllHMWkXEU)
I was fascinated by the lyrics when I was a kid although I didn't realize the song was about a killer not a shark. But I didn't much like it otherwise as a kid. It was just too jazzy for my young taste.

Old School? New School? Didn't go to school?? Crypt has everything for your warped sensibilities. Rockabilly, Garage, '50s, '60s, Surf, Soul, Exotica... I wish I had the dough for their whole catalogue.
But based off your two posts, I emphatically recommend everyone find themselves copies of their Born Bad Collection (All songs that The Cramps either covered or borrowed from, where the "Werewolf" song appears) and their Back From The Grave Collection, where "Scream" is included.

For those not aware, on op of his two records of all new material, Lost Themes & Lost Themes II, John Carpenter has re-recorded some of his best movie themes and released them through Sacred Bones Records as 12" singles. They have Halloween on the same record as Escape From New York and Assault on Precinct 13 with The Fog.

Great stuff! I still love this video. It's important for a couple of reasons. If you're a Kiss geek like me, the video is important because it captures a rare moment of Ace Frehley and Eric Carr playing in the same lineup. Unfortunately, by the time Eric joined the band, Ace already had one foot out the door.
marsattacks666: you ever watch the "Unmasked" tour footage from Australia? Some of fav Kiss concert footage. The only time you can see Ace and Eric playing a whole set together.
Anyhow, that video was important too because when MTV first went on air, "I Love it Loud" was one of the few hardrock or metal videos in the rotation. I Love it Loud and "You got another Thing Comin" by Judas Priest were pretty much the only heavy rock videos MTV played. Pretty soon MTV started playing a lotta videos from the hair bands like Van Halen and Def Leppard, but early on I Love it Loud was pretty much it. So it was a big deal in my house.

Geezer.
As a KISS collector (Horror, too) I have obtained a sizable KISS collection (also- Metal, Punk, Goth, Hard rock, Country, Rockabilly,Surf) that includes videos from different eras and line-ups of KISS. The first KISS videos I ever purchased were the widely circulated-KISSVISION, circa 1990s.
I totally remember seeing I Love it Loud on MTV ( which now discussed on KissFaq). The I Love it Loud video us super cool.

Went to see Anthrax and Death Angel the other night. Great show.
Anthrax not thought of as a 'horror rock' band per se, but there are some cool horror connections. Guys in the band are big horror geeks.
*Scott Ian, for example, played a walker on an episode of The Walking Dead.
*The song "Fight 'em till you Can't" is about the zombie Apocalypse.
*There is really cool bonus footage on the live DVD "Music of Mass Destruction" of Charlie Benante going to the Sideshow Collectibles Warehouse and walking out with some Universal Monsters.

Hey thanks MA666! I just looked up that story. Here's the link if others are interested: http://www.blabbermouth.net/news/anthrax-scott-ian-has-a-message-for-kiss-fans-stop-questioning-gene-simmons-and-paul-stanley/ (http://www.blabbermouth.net/news/anthrax-scott-ian-has-a-message-for-kiss-fans-stop-questioning-gene-simmons-and-paul-stanley/)
I hate to say it, but I agree with Scott Ian. At first I thought the idea of Eric and Tommy wearing Peter and Ace's makeup was pretty whack. But when you understand the history of the band and read the autobiographies, you realize Ace and Peter are pains in the ass. Like a lotta Kiss fans, Ace and Peter are my favorite band members, but you have to admit these guys can be self-destructive. And at this point, I also agree with Scott that Peter probably can't swing it anymore. I'm not dissing the guy, but he's like 70 yrs old!
Here's more on the rumor Ace may rejoin: http://www.blabbermouth.net/news/ace-frehley-on-rumored-kiss-return-its-a-possibility/ (http://www.blabbermouth.net/news/ace-frehley-on-rumored-kiss-return-its-a-possibility/)
I would totally be down with an Ace, Paul, Gene and Eric lineup (this would actually be second time around with this lineup; I think this lineup toured in Japan and Australia in early 2000s).

KISS are wearing their CREATURES outfits. Pretty awesome.
I dig the CREATURES era.

Went to see Ace Frehley in concert a few weeks ago. Fun show. Great to see original space ace. Rumors circulating that he will rejoin Kiss. Paul Stanley squashed it, but we'll see.
