Title: Classic Collection Artwork!!
Post by: crissrudd4554 on February 23, 2013, 04:42:40 PM
I'm just curious if anyone is able to find any logo free large views of the artworks used for the Classic Collection artwork. Here's a few examples I've stumbled on.

I don't have anything, but I think these are great. Wish they would use these for the DVD releases.

Here's another one. Not that big. If anyone finds a larger view and one thats in color like the video cover feel free to post.

That would be smart, and Universal's current home video marketing team doesn't know how to be smart, hence why they keep releasing these films with black and white or sepia-toned covers.  Hello!  Nobody's gonna notice them if they look like that.

Good point. Why are the powers-that- be at Universal such screw ups at every level?

That is some amazing artwork. I loved the ones for Murders in the Rue Morgue, The Invisible Man, and Dracula's Daughter.

I made these for fun. Their custom Blu-Ray covers featuring these artworks. I pulled these from various Laserdisc covers.

As we await for the discovery of more large logo free images of the Classic Collection artwork I found something else that may put smiles on your faces. Some nice large logo free images for the early 1990s VHS releases for some of the horror themed Abbott and Costello films!!!!!!!  :D

Title: Re: Classic Collection Artwork!!
Post by: crissrudd4554 on August 07, 2013, 02:05:07 PM
I stumble on these mostly by accident. The Black Cat and The Raven ones I found on a website called Horrortalk where they were reviewing the recent UK DVD releases of the films. Island of Lost Souls I found on a site called Moviemail where they were reviewing the UK BluRay. The image was in B&W though so I had my friend Ansel colorize it so it was identical to the VHS cover. Dracula's Daughter and Mummy's Curse I believe were from Netflix. I'm hoping to find larger versions of those two. The Invisible Man I found on facebook on the official Invisible Man page. The image was in reverse so I fixed it. The Abbott and Costello pics I found on movieposterdb.com. The rest that I've found which isn't much I can't remember.

Great question, Mike. I backed those up with a DVD burner, in case the LD player gives up the ghost. Another one is Magnetic Monster, which is available as one of those on-demand no-frills DVD-R's. That one's a fave, since I sat mesmerized by it as it aired on Armchair Playhouse when I was a pup. A few years ago I snagged a set of the lobby cards...

Even though I have that and the GOG MOD and a home made RIDERS TO THE STARS DVD-R, I would love to see a set of those three on pressed DVDs!

I took the images for House of Frankenstein and House of Dracula from the LD cover. Unfortunately the image wasn't as clear as I hoped which is why there a tad fuzzy. Still nice in the meantime until I find better ones.

Well I sent someone over at HorrorTalk a message to see if by any chance he had any more of these pictures since he had the Black Cat and Raven pics that I later posted here. No luck. He just sent me a link to the other reviews on the site about the DVDs that were recently produced by the company that issued those Black Cat and Raven DVDs in the UK. Well I'll keep looking. If anything turns up for anyone be sure to check back.

No unfortunately none of the Abbott and Costello monster films were featured in this collection. However here's a fan renderings I did a few months ago of what it may have looked like if A&C meet Frankenstein and A&C meet the Mummy may have looked like if they had been part of this collection. The first one was a collaboration between me and my friend Ansel. The last two I did myself using the artworks that were used for the early 1990s VHS' of those films.

Someone should make a book of this artwork  in hardcover. I'd buy it. Nostalgic over vhs art..... already. I am a lost cause, lol. >:D
I would soooo buy one (hardcover 1st edition, please). I there even a book on Universal Monsters movie poster/lobby card art? If there isn't, there definitely needs to be one.

I wish these could've been used as DVD art work. The films were recently rereleased on BluRay but they reverted back to the poster art.

I don't dislike the poster art. Old school fans probably prefer that anyways. I was happy that the Jaws Blu-Ray cover used the poster cover image that first appeared on the paperback book as opposed to the recreated versions that were used on the past DVD covers. However those early 90s artworks for the Universal Monsters are just fantastic! Very hypnotic and just great to look at. I also do have one complaint in regards to using the posters as the covers, why is it they don't use an original Frankenstein poster as opposed to the reissue poster??!!
Title: Re: Classic Collection Artwork!!

Good question. Sideshow was able to use a variety of poster art on their beautiful 12" figure boxes. They could definitely mix it up for the dvd/Blu-ray releases. Maybe they keep using the same posters over & over for consumer recognition sake.

This was the artwork for the VHS standees/display cases in the video stores.
The originals and still the greatest!

Thanks for posting this thread. Those beautiful graphics really do deserve a book to feature them. I totally agree, that "House of Wax" laser release was designed to resemble the style Universal was using then. I also like these much better than the poster discs.
When I was working at a Blockbuster in that time period, the chain had a big tie-in promotion with Universal. The had small counter/shelf tops that had adaptions of the artwork, pretty much from Frankenstein,  The Bride, Dracula, The Wolfman. The also had two double-sided hanging hard cardboard posted, box shaped about 3 feet by 2 feet. They were of the Dracula/Frankenstein and Wolfman/Creature Walks Among Us. One does have to wonder why the latter more esoteric image was used rather than the original Creature or The Mummy. (Shows some real lack of skill at Universal's side on that choice.) They are unadorned with any lettering or graphics. Nice collectibles in themselves.

Finally managed to hang my Lugosi and Chaney Blockbuster panels.  Dracula is above my Mezco Monster shelf, and the Wolf Man is on the door.  I'll have to flip them in a few months so I can see Karloff and the Creech, but -- right now -- I am very pleased to just have them on display.

After looking at it again, I don't think the Mummy's Hand pic I posted a while back is a legit copy. It looks like someone took a copy of the VHS cover and made alterations. How I can tell is because the Egyptian figures painted on the wall in the background are missing and there appears to be some additional 'wrinkles' added to the bandages in the lower right corner, the same spot on the video cover where the MCA/Universal logo is!!

Exactly! They haven't used these arts in God knows how long. When I saw the Invisible Man artwork as the profile pic on the IM Facebook page my spirits rang high in hopes that perhaps these artworks would make a comeback especially cause this was around the time the BluRay set was being prepared. Nothing there then of course the BluRays were reissued individually but of course they went back to the poster art which is fine but I still prefer the 90's artwork. Maybe in a few months I'll try them again. Also what's the harm in showing the artworks? There only images. It's not like we're exposing the whole movie to the world! Anyways I'll keep looking when I can I'm just exhausted from continuous searching that's all. I've said it before I'll say it again anyone find anything post away!

Took a stab and made a complete Creature bluray cover featuring the VHS artwork. The back cover I sourced from the actual BD cover and left untouched. I sourced the front cover from a UK laserdisc cover since I cant find it logo free. Nonetheless I think I did quite good! :D

Universal!  Where are you?  This is what we want.  This is what we have been wanting for twenty years.  This is what we will buy.

Figured I'd do a cut and paste job with this one. Incase you guys missed it the copy I posted of this the other week ago was missing the reflection of the Monster in the head gear. I reinstated it using a scan of the VHS cover. Good enough unit a legit copy surfaces.

Thanks again Leo. I'm doing my best. These pictures are very tough to find but I keep looking. I guess some of them Universal has under lock and key. I sent a request to their licensing department about using the Frankenstein image and they wanted $500 for a licensing fee. Seriously?? They may as well license me the whole damn movie. $500 for a picture?? Anyways I keep looking and post when I can. I always appreciate feedback from these pictures since this VHS series was my introduction to Universal Monsters and its nice to see these covers in their unaltered glory!

One thing I find interesting is I have virtually none of the 'main' movies i.e. Dracula, Frankenstein, Mummy, Wolf Man etc. yet I have ones for some if not all the sequels and a few less regarded films. Guess Universal are very over protective now. Anyways I'm with you Mike. It would be great to have printable versions of all of these. We'll see what lay on the horizon.

I used to get good responses to this stuff over there just like here but now no one responds anymore. Oh well. I post this stuff to connect with the people who I know feel the same way I do. Those are nice! I may get those! I hope they have the other titles from the Lugosi Franchise DVD18.

And oddly enough they didnt use the VHS art for that film either so it kinda falls outta place with the designs for Black Cat and Raven

Speaking of Murders in the Rue Morgue, the DVD-R version on Amazon uses the VHS art

And they were all released by the same dist. on the same day. Maybe that's the only thing Universal provided them with?

They released all the Lugosi Collection movies on DVDR. Kinda wanted pressed discs, but those are the fallback choice.

Well since they issued the 30 film box set which does not feature DVD18's like the previous Legacy sets maybe a reissue of sorts of those films will be done but lets not get our hopes up just yet. Universal still have to please everyone with a BluRay counterpart to the new DVD set.

Love all those import covers. Why can't the U.S. Universal get things right anymore?

I'm not, which is why I'm looking at the R2s.  :D

I'm still waiting for a proper restoration to the soundtrack of Frankenstein!! Not the muffled sounded version used on every release since 2004 which I will add is missing portions of the soundtrack! Check the link below to see what I mean!

Dayummmm. Yeah, that is ridiculous! $500??

I think the links were lost or something. One thing I find irritating about this site is you can only edit posts for a short time and then they become permanent.

That really should be changed. I can restore the pics, if you can give me the urls.

I wanted to reawaken my original thread so like I did with my 'second thread' here's the covers again in smaller form so hopefully the links wont be corrupted this time. I'm even reposting the arts for the A&C Monster films, Universal Horror Classics, and Hammer Horror Collection. At the bottom is links to the other thread and where the images at their full size can be seen.

Two new additions. Brides of Dracula (1960) and an alternate version of The Evil of Frankenstein (1964). Strangely BOD is missing the large window that appears on the actual video cover.

Here's the Frankenstein artwork...sorta. I cropped this from an image of a Japanese Laserdisc cover so it's not the FULL artwork but is as of now the best copy of the artwork I could fine. Hopefully the full one will surface someday.

Two new additions. Brides of Dracula (1960) and an alternate version of The Evil of Frankenstein (1964). Strangely BOD is missing the large window that appears on the actual video cover.

The Brides of Dracula benefits from the absence of the window pane. The Evil of Frankenstein. The maiden's hair follows the laws of gravity for one upside down. Her mammary area does not. At all.

Criss, your opening comment is a request for "logo free large views of the artworks used for the Classic Collection" and I'm unclear of what you mean by "Classic Collection".  I assume this is the Universal Monster Classic Collection?

When I'm looking for ultra-large JPGs of classic movie posters, I consider the Heritage Auction site to be The Go-To Site.

http://www.ha.com/ (http://www.ha.com/)

This is a 'sign-up' site - it's free BUT to sign up, new users must wade thru numerous pages of seemingly profile-related issues.  That's because this is an auction site - it's important for me to remember that.  They anticipate bids, bidding, credit cards, IDs, etc.  So, during this free sign-up process, there are several references to credit cards, staying signed in, security, etc.

I skip past those.   They are not necessary.

In addition, there may be numerous pages of "indicate your interests" which Heritage Auction would use to email you about recently-received objects that meet your selected interest-choices so they can send you alerts.

I chose the bare minimum on any 'required' page, and then after I had logged in, I went back into my profile and deleted all choices.

NEXT... there's one more hoop o' fire to leap thru.  Normally when logging in, I am dumped into the Current Bids section.  This has a few thousand items, at most.

What I REALLY want is to locate the ARCHIVES section, which has several hundred thousand posters and Stills.  From there, I type in the name of the film, and voila, I'll be presented with a page of matches.  Or none, if none exist.

It's a pain to sign up, but the quality of the artwork is worth it, for me.

Yeah, he's looking for the original paintings used for the VHS boxes, as you can see by the many collected in this thread.

It's like looking for the original Gogos paintings use for the FM covers. Gogos has an art book with many of those originals. It would be great to have a book for the Uni VHS cover art, too. I'd buy one!

Ah yes, VHS artwork.  Heritage Auction (HA.COM) offers movie posters, lobby cards, some stills.  And many can be color-separated, as well as displaying years of aging (cracks, folds, tears) which presses my limited ability to clone-brush.

Thanks for that clarification.

You can usually find a good enough example of most any poster, there. If I need all the fold lines removed, it's just a matter of time.

Hello ChristineBCW

As Mike said I'm looking for the artworks used for the VHS/Laserdisc releases of the Universal Monsters. However, I'm specifically looking for the ones from the early 1990's. The Universal Monster VHS collection at that time was called 'The Classic Collection'. Many of the artworks I've found through various sites on the web and have shared them here but many I have yet to find. In regards to ha.com, I have in fact visited that site many times and yes they do have some neat stuff. Classic posters and memorabilia. However, they do not have the artworks I am seeking.

Criss, your patience and skill are most impressive.  I hope this is a way you earn a good wage, too - something like that needs to be rewarded!

In offering up HA and TheWrongSideOfTheArt, I was frankly 'chumming the waters', also hoping to elicit websites of artwork for my own devious purposes (to clutter up Mike Scott's mailbox?!!  ;) ) so I'll be sure to keep an eye out for these threads' updates.

Understand that Criss is finding (no mean feat) images of these original paintings on the web and not converting a VHS box.

If you want some more great monster art, visit my old monster mags blog. There's a link in my signature.

Thank you Mike and also Christine understand I'm only finding these to share with everyone for their enjoyment. I have no intention of profiting from any of this. About a year ago I messaged universalclips.com about one of these images and they wanted me to pay a $500 license fee to use the picture so I sadly struck out there. Whichever pics I have shown here are pics I've managed to discover on my own accord on the web.

And speaking of which, is there a link (not a hyperlink) between the images, or does each seem to be posted by one guy and another as a one off sharing of something they found interesting. I'm just sort of amazed that there are so many of these paintings on the web. It's not like pulp art, or comic art where there's a large following.

Most of the one's I posted last year I found on a site called customaniacs.org. However there have been others I've found elsewhere. The Invisible Man artwork was the profile pic on the Invisible Man Facebook page. The A&C Monster artworks I found on movieposterdb.com. The Black Cat and The Raven artworks I found on horrortalk.com. Island of Lost Souls I found through a Portuguese movie site. Murders in the Rue Morgue I think was from Flikr. However where I uploaded them originally and posted the link here I guess was hyperlinked since the links broke after time as you recall. Not sure how that works. I have a yuku account as well since I also post on Classic Horror Film Board and I've uploaded them in my photo section there and shared the links to those here and so far they havent broke. I also have a OneDrive account where I've uploaded them and shared them here since you'll be able to see them at their full resolution there.

(I understood that these images weren't objects for sale, or profiteering.  What I meant, in my 'best wishes' for Criss was that the talent, patience and skill to produce that quality of work can be translated onto other artistic pursuits worthy of "making a living."  I was hoping Criss actually used his obvious skills for that.  Patience is not just a virtue - in Art Restoration companies, it's a salary.)

So now I'm wondering, where did all those people get the images? How did they pry them loose from Universal's archives? Such are the mysteries of the internet, I guess!

As for broken links, you gotta put stuff in your own space if you want it to stay. You never know when the other guy will yank the pic.

This is mostly for those new to this thread but it'll be a refresher to those who have visited before which I'm sure most of you have. Anyways below I have posted the artworks yet again but I decided to do something a bit different this time. Along with the artwork I have posted its corresponding VHS cover. While my main focus here is to find the artworks for the films that bore the 'Classic Collection' banner on its VHS cover (hence the thread's title), I've also shared artworks to others such as the A&C Monster films and the artworks to other Universal Horror films. For the section for artworks I've yet to find I just posted its VHS cover.

Great collection.  The webbing over DRACULA'S DAUGHTER's head is so compelling, but there's so much intricacies on all of these works of art.

Unfortunately, this listing of artworks makes me scramble thru our collection and also looking up DVD availability for these.  JUNGLE WOMAN, JUNGLE CAPTIVE, CAPTIVE WILD WOMAN and JUNGLE this and that.  I fear I've let a few of these slip thru the cracks.  So many missing films, suddenly!

About the only classic era Universal horror/sci-fi movies that haven't been released on DVD (including the DVD-R "Vault" releases) are:

The Jungle Captive (1945)
The Cat Creeps (1946)
The Spider Woman Strikes Back (1946)
Curse of the Undead (1959)
and the lost 1930 The Cat Creeps

Got some new stuff here. None are from the Classic Collection but since I had posted other non-CC artworks prior I figured these would fit. First is the artwork for The Invisible Ray. Next are a few from Universal's '50s SciFi Collection.

Fun!  :)

I remember when I was torn about starting to buy DVDs or sticking to VHS tapes. Finally, in 2002, I took the DVD plunge and haven't looked back. I've added a few BDs, but whatever the next big thing format is I'm not interested. My movie library on disc will do me till I fall in the grave and I'm satisfied with it. I still have my old VHS tapes if I ever want to stroll down memory lane (though as time progresses more and more of them will either play poorly or fail to play). We'll always have fun memories from the VHS days anyway.

We were literally getting ripped off on everything in the late '80s and early '90s.  I look at the prices on some of the Halloween decorations I have...  Outrageous.  The only reasonable prices were fast food.  Now we're getting ripped off there and saving big on monsters.  I'm okay with that.   ;D

Actually, $15.00 a pop wasn't so bad; considering that just a few years before this it cost about $10 to get a silent, super-8 movie from Castle Films, that only lasted about 10 minutes ($20.00 if you wanted sound)!

For $15 now I could get 3 or 4 of those tapes off ebay or Amazon.

I've purchased all of mine for $1.00 or less.  Still missing a few titles, but I thank God for Goodwill.   :D

Interesting to note that the $15 price is kinda coming back since thats roughly what it cost to buy one Blu-ray of these movies!

There's a small chance I may have the Mummy's Hand artwork by the end of the month. Hoping a site that reviews the French BD's for The Mummy sequels coming out this month will have the pic featured somewhere. That's how I found those uncropped one's above.

Mike's picture gave me an idea. I took his picture and ex-ed out the covers that I have found the logoless artworks for. Half an ex means artwork was partially found. Figured this could work as a visual guide for what artworks are left, that I'm on the look out for at least.

I would like that a lot.

Seems like there used to be couple sites where some of the more creative fans would post fan-produced DVD wrapper art.  I don't know where those are anymore.

The studios put out a lot of movies with really lousy art - even though the poster art seems to be mainly in the public domain, and it would it so logical to use them for the fronts of the DVD cases.

(*at*)aura of foreboding and Mike Scott This astounds me too. Had someone asked me 2-3 years ago what I thought I'd find first, I'd be sure I'd have the 8 big ones before we could even talk about the sequels. The fact that I have the arts to practically every Frankenstein and Mummy sequel as well as every Dracula, Wolf Man, and Creature sequel yet none for the originals says something about how locked up these artworks are. Sometimes I often wonder if its due to licensing among the descendants of Lugosi, Karloff, and Chaney but then again I've actually found a couple with them already so I dont know. It really is a mystery. Anyways here's a couple DVD covers I have saved. I'm continuously doing these so there will be more to come! :D

If only Universal would put out a deluxe set on single discs.

I'd spring for a HI-DEF /BLU-Ray set, just so I could replace the factory covers with these.

MORE!  MORE!  MORE!

I'm saving these pictures.

If Universal ever does a complete re-issue of all of them on Blu-Ray, I am going to finally upgrade from the Legacy issues.

If, when Universal does, they keep the movies to no more than 2 films per disc, I would be willing to buy 2 sets,  (after the prices come down) just so I could display the full set the way I have the VHS set all these years.

My only addition before printing these wrappers would be to add a small number to the bottom of each spine.  I like to keep all these in chronological order by release date.  The developing, ongoing saga of the monsters' evolution makes more sense to me in that order, and I like to do binge watching sometimes.

It also makes them look even more like a set of Classic Monster Encyclopedia perched on the shelf.

Oh, yeah...  and  MORE  MORE  MORE!

Universal should be paying you for the work involved in adapting the VHS art to DVD format - and then using them for future releases.

The Dracula, Frankenstein, and Wolf Man front covers I sourced from Japanese LD covers since they are presently the only decent versions of the covers I could find that I felt could be useful on a DVD cover. I have The Invisible Man artwork however it was too cropped on the top to fit the cover. I had a friend photoshop some extra space at the top however when I viewed it in full view in Photoshop it looked too blurry. So what I did was paste the original image over his image and did some erasing to blend the two together. I actually have the Japan LD for that film as well so it's possible I may redo that cover when I get around to scanning the LD cover. ;)

I think "A&C Meet Frankenstein" deserves the grey Classic Collection heading.  They are the Classic monsters.

"The Invisible Woman" is more comedy than serious and it has the grey heading.

I never cared anything about the other A&C monster movies.

Quick question. Does anyone here happen to have the French BD for FMWM?? I found this screen grab on a DVD site which shows the VHS artwork from the disc's photo gallery. It looks a bit less cropped than the one I posted. Question is if anyone here owns that BD any chance you can post a larger grab of this frame??? Thank you!

If there's a still gallery on the disc could you please check to see if the VHS artwork is there and if possible please share a frame grab of it?? Some of the still galleries on the French BDs feature the VHS artworks which is why I'm asking.

An 'uncropped' Frankenstein meets Wolf Man taken from a frame grab from the French BD (Thank you eegah over at CHFB for providing this). I put uncropped in quotes because this appears to be an uncropped copy of a crop since the actual VHS cover reveals more image than this image.

I was looking at some of the minor Universal horrors that were issued on VHS around this time.  Not part of the "Classic Collection", they were issued separately as "Horror Classics".

I like the VHS artwork for "Night Monster" better than what followed later.

Here is an example of the VHS box for "The Strange Door":

And what looks to be the original artwork:

Got me to wondering what Universal films were listed un the "Horror Classics" banner.  I know of the following titles:

Black Castle, The
Climax, The
Curse of the Undead
Night Monster

Inner Sanctum Mysteries - 3 double features
Calling Dr. Death / Strange Confession
Weird Woman / Frozen Ghost, The
Dead Man’s Eyes / Pillow of Death

What others were there?

The Black Castle (have artwork for)
Black Friday (have artwork for)
Calling Dr. Death / Strange Confession (Inner Sanctum)
The Climax
Curse of the Undead
Dead Man’s Eyes / Pillow of Death (Inner Sanctum)
Jungle Captive
Jungle Woman
Murders in the Zoo
Mystery of Edwin Drood
Night Monster
She-Wolf of London (have artwork for)
The Strange Door (have artwork for)
Weird Woman / The Frozen Ghost (Inner Sanctum)

Thought I'd do a quick reference guide for the "Universal Horror Classics" VHS boxes and the few that didn't get included in either set. (The Invisible Ray should have been part of the "Classics Collection"!)

"The Old Dark House" should have been wedged in there somewhere.

Not really a "monster" picture per se, but a lovely little James Whale Universal horror nonetheless.

I know.

I just meant that it deserved to have been included in the group on its own merits.

A Universal produced, James Whale directed, Boris Karloff starring chiller.

May as well finish it off with the "Golden Age of Science Fiction Thrillers" series and a couple of other Universal '50s sci-fi movies.

Nice work!  I would just add some blue highlighting around the Monster to let it blend more with the background per the original.   :D

If the sky were black and blue it would appear stormy and give better contrast. The green sky looks too flat and doesn't make the foreground images pop the way they should. Maybe add a tinge of pink on the horizon at the hilltop like the sun were setting behind the storm.

Are there any other CFTBL (or sequels) domestic VHS releases besides the "Good Times" tape, the "MCA 3D" tape (both below), the 3 "Classic Collection" tapes and the 3 with one sheet poster covers, released at the same time as the first DVDs?

As far as I know there are not. For CFTBL you pretty much nailed it. MCA 3D VHS, Goodtimes VHS, Classic Collection VHS, and Classic Monster Collection. For the two sequels there were the Classic Collection VHS' and the Classic Creature Collection VHS' with artwork modeled after those in the Classic Monster Collection. Interestingly the Creature sequels were the only films in the Classic Monster Collection that did not get a double feature DVD. They would not make their DVD debut until the 2004 Creature Legacy Collection.

That would be great.  It really needs to be part of the "Collection" set.

You shouldn't have said "DVD cover". They'll think you're going to sell something. Although the answer would probably have been the same, no matter what you said.

Probably. A year or two ago I tried getting the Frankenstein artwork for a presentation which they said would be alright however I guess they were under the notion I already had it since I never got it. However even if they approve I think you have to pay a license fee of like $500!

Yesterday I was able to email one of Universal's marketing guys and asked if these artworks would ever be used for anything again in the future. In an earlier message he requested that I not use his name but here's what he had to say.

At this time, there are no plans to re-use this art at all.  We’ve got 3 main looks we’ve been using…original posters, black & white (with red titles) and the new legacy collections (which is my personal favorite of all the art we’ve done on these). We also have some limited edition “glow in the dark” art that will be exclusively at Walmart starting tomorrow through Halloween.

It’s good to hear that feedback on the VHS art. I’ll take that into consideration next time we revisit these. Thanks!

Another thing to keep in mind if you get the DVD versions is the discs are not new. Its the 1999 discs with new packaging. I learned this the hard way when I got the Frankenstein disc about two years with the black and white cover and red logo thinking the content was new only to discover the gold '99 disc was inside.

You heard me correct. The 2014 Legacy Collection DVD sets featured the new remasters while the 8 single DVDs from 2014 used the '99 discs. The 2012 4 packs also had the '99 discs. Im not exactly sure which prints were used for 6 film DVD set or the Frankenstein/Bride double feature DVD.

So I also took some additional stabs at The Invisible Man. For a reminder here's my previous version.

Not bad but definitely could use some tweaking. For that one I had to shrink my DVD template to accommodate the artwork I was using since it wasn't big enough to fill up the cover. For this next variation, where I was able to keep the template in its default size, I sourced the front from a Japanese LD cover.

Not bad either but I felt the image had too much space and the logo was dominating the cover too much and restricted my use of the image. So the logo had to go. After some tweaking with the image, as well as borrowing the logo from an Invisible Man action figure card, I came up with this! I considered using the transparent logo from the LD cover but I honestly think it works better without it especially on the side cover.

Yeah.

The transparent Invisible Man title is pretty hard to read on the spine - and that is how we find the DVD on the shelf.
The only time we see the title on the front is after we have already located the disc we were looking for.

The covers I've made use for thus far. :)

Anyways I figured I might do something fun here. Some may be curious what I use for some of my covers especially when I've yet to complete my search for the textless artworks. So here's a list of what I have used. Keep in mind I can't keep track of everything I've used so some things may be left out. For example, most of the back cover stills I've found from a variety of places (Google, eBay, monster sites, etc) so I'll likely leave most of those out unless necessary. I'm also gonna leave the Abbott & Costello covers I did out of this list. Anyways here it goes.

Yes I'm still here. ;) About a month ago a DVD of Tower of London was released in the UK which used the VHS artwork and font.

I decided to use this to update my VHS style DVD cover and here's what I got.

Sure it still has its imperfections but I think its an improvement over my previous version not to mention this has the correct TOL logo! I did have to partially use the VHS cover to remove the logos in the bottom left corner hence why that area is a bit grainier looking than the rest of the image. For comparison here's my previous TOL cover.

I think I discovered something interesting about the Invisible Agent cover. Here's the photo that was sourced for the background.

Here's the cover art.

Note that this mustached Nazi is absent from the source photo (or is he??).

Also note that the Nazi who is second left in the original photo has been moved to the foreground just behind to the left of the Invisible Agent. However, you'll also notice that the mustached Nazi is in exactly the same spot that the foreground Nazi was in the original photo. Look closely at those two Nazis in the artwork.

While it could be argued that the mustached Nazi is from a separate photo, based on the evidence I'm presenting I do not believe thats the case. Looking closely I believe the mustached Nazi is simply the foreground Nazi with a simple mustache added and perhaps minor alterations done to his face to make him appear as a different person. Thoughts??

That’s true for the most part but looking closer at your picture it actually looks it’s still partially visible so I assume they just figured it’d be easier just to remove altogether.

Some updated covers. First is an updated Island of Lost Souls I made a while back that I'm not sure I posted. Next I made some updates to Son of Frankenstein and Revenge of the Creature. SOF I basically just redid the background on the front from scratch. ROTC I redid the whole back cover template and added some 'glow' to the characters which I think makes them stand out more (there's a similar glow on the VHS cover itself). Might still need some color tweaking though.

I know I haven't been posting as much in here lately but I did find these recently and figured I'd share. I was actually trying to make DVD covers based off the Classic Collection covers as far back as about 2008. Here's some early variations I did. I obviously didn't have the textless covers to work with at the time so I tried going in my own direction using whatever resources I could. Now that i have some of the artworks I basically abandoned this concept and instead have been able to make covers that are more faithful to the VHS covers. Keep in mind at the time I did these early variations I didnt have Photoshop like i do now. I did these with Microsoft Paint and PowerPoint. I didnt even bother to use a DVD cover template to get them all size accurate unlike my 'newer' covers. So these are a bit imperfect but a neat twist on the concept given I didnt have the resources I wanted to get these where I wanted them. ;)

Did some updates. MURDERS I finally found a better copy of the back cover still. HOUSE and CREATURE I redid the back cover templates and realigned the text. I also sharped the HOUSE logos. CREATURE I used a copy of the back cover still that has better detail and lighting and also has the production number in the bottom right corner (like on the VHS cover). REVENGE I replaced the side view logo with the squished down version like on the VHS cover and also sharpened the front cover logo.

And a new addition, The Mummy's Hand. I just used the VHS cover for this so not as well put together as some of the other covers Ive done but still pretty nice considering. I used the VHS cover for the back cover as well since I had a difficult time replicating the back cover using the original still.

Took another stab at Phantom. Of all the covers I've attempted thus far Phantom has to be the most difficult. Just a refresher here were the three earlier attempts.

And here's my current version. Not much changed from the last one. Framing and coloring's a bit better as my 'faking' the floor in the bottom left corner. A bit brighter as well.

You may note that the back cover has remain consistent over the four variations! ;)

Since the textless Son of Frankenstein artwork I have lacks the reflection of Karloff’s Monster (I assume due to licensing), I decided to reinstate it using the VHS cover.

Yep looks awkward IMO. What I find interesting is Karloff’s reflection actually shows him forward instead of reversed. The scar on his head gives this away plus here’s the source photo.

One promo still remains from a YouTube clip as of now however. Link is the same.

Did this mostly for fun. Tried creating a textless Mummy’s Hand artwork using elements of The Mummy Collection LD set cover.

I've actually made a few VHS styled DVD covers for my own use. When I get time I'll share a few. :)

So...

Of the Universal Classics Collection VHS's (the ones with the distinctive grey header on the front), which ones have you made DVD artwork for - and which ones have you NOT done?

Just a simple list.

Also, did you ever do an upgrade of the Bride of Frankenstein cover?  That's the one that seems would benefit most from tweaking.  It's kinda dark and there is not a lot of separation between Bride and the background.

Do you think you could cobble together a "Classic Collection"-style cover for Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein?  It has always bothered me that this one was not included in the collection.  It features three of the original monsters (four, if you include the Invisible Man's cameo) and the original Dracula.  Of all the later comical horrors, it was the one that really SHOULD have been included.

First an update. I tweaked my Promo compilation again (probably the last). Promo 1 I recaptured mostly for quality purposes (though it’s not really much different than before) and Promo 7 has been replaced with a capture. All the ones I had previously pulled from YouTube videos are now replaced!

https://vimeo.com/288781897

Next to MFS’s questions. Sadly no I have not been able to update my Bride cover (though I would like too). I haven’t been able to find a larger scan of that LD cover (or even the LD itself so I could scan the cover myself) or better yet the textless cover art. Such a shame when the more popular titles have to have slightly weaker covers. But don’t worry the first chance I have to properly improve it I will! ;)

Ones I haven’t done yet I’m just kinda goin off the top of my head.

Spanish Dracula
The Monster and the Girl
Man Made Monster
Captive Wild Woman
House of Horrors

As for A&C covers a few years back I did make these VHS styled covers for both Meet Frankenstein and Meet the Mummy showing what they may have looked like in the Collection! :)

COOL!  That's all of the biggies.  The others aren't that important to me.

So all that needs to be done is to marry these two (with the spine overlap at the top.)

Now, If I can figure out how to shrink all the spines for slim cases, and add tiny white volume numbers to the grey box at the top (I want to file them in order of release dates), I can print them all - and have them on the shelf just as I did when they were VHS's.

I wish I actually knew what I was doing.

This is weird. I didn’t make this one yet it somehow ended up in my OneDrive folder. Somehow someone was able to access the folder and add to it and slipped in a tweaked Frankenstein.

Not a bad try whoever did it. For comparison here’s mine.

I figured it out. I had shared the link without disabling the option for those with the link to edit the folder. I fixed it! ;)

So one aspect of these covers that I knew would need to be updated eventually was the MCA/Universal logos. I mainly held off on this because I knew if I did this it would require me via my perfectionist attitude to go back and update ALL the covers I've done. Well I finally bit the bullet and did just that. For the sake of discussion though I'm not gonna share them all in this post. If you have access to that OneDrive folder I shared they're all there and updated. Here I'm just gonna do a comparison.

Before.

After.

At least you can read the Home Video part and make out the globe on the side cover logo now! Not to mention the I in Video is more visible in the updated logo(s).

Two updates. A&C meet Mummy I replaced the back cover still of A&C and Marie Windsor with a scan I found on ebay. The fuzzy iPhone version I had of the photo before is no more! TOL I did a complete redo of the front (and technically the side). I still used the UK DVD cover as the base but combined it with a scan of a French VHS cover to extend the artwork to the side cover and also give the bottom slightly more lift!

Also got a newbie here. A&C meet Jekyll & Hyde!

Nice visuals, but there had to be a more appropriate choice for the music.

I am really appreciating that Scream Factory is releasing Blu-Ray editions of the minor Universal Horrors on single discs in their "Collections" series.  I like to split them up in separate, slim-line cases and file them alphabetically with all my other Horror/Sci-Fi/Fantasy films.

Right now, I am using plain white paper for case covers.  Oh, how I wish some enterprising, talented, highly motivated sole would design individual case art that could be used by the collectors like me who are hopeless in such matters.

What Scream has given us (or announced) so far:

There must be some collector out there who is thinking along the lines of tackling this project.  If there were only some way to get in contact with him/her.

I did make this cover for the volume one set using the VHS covers but the only place I shared it I got one response and it was how they ‘much prefer the original posters over those cheesy 90s covers’ or however they put it. Not to mention given how some of the films in the new sets never had a VHS release I never proceeded with the other covers. But anyways here’s the one I did.
