Title: Puzzles, anyone?
Post by: Illoman on July 17, 2012, 01:22:54 PM
Ever since I was a kid I have always enjoyed putting together jigsaw puzzles. Here's a few I've saved through the years:

Disney ones, circa 1973:

Those are nice Illo! I often think that a good puzzle is about the only inexpensive item I find at alot of flea markets or garage sales. Your Frazetta's are special nice.....Buddy

I can remember buying several puzzles from the companies advertizing in the backs of "Creepy", "Eerie", and other mags back in the 60s and 70s...at one point, I remember having a 2x3 foot poster from one of "The Shadow" pulp adventures.

Recently I've been buying Halloween themed puzzles from Bits and Pieces.

I really enjoy those "sliding puzzles" - where there is one square missing and you have to move things around to get the picture put together.  I have a few larger sized ones of  famous classical artwork (Picasso, Matisse, VanGogh, etc.) but the absoute hardest ones are the M.C. Escher.  They take at least twice as long to get together as the others.

Man, I love those too!! I have a Howdy Doody and an Archies one. When I was a kid I had a Mighty Mouse one and a Yogi Bear. Wish I still had those...

When I was in college back in the 70's I had several puzzles of monsters that Jeff Jones had painted.  I'm pretty sure one of them was a mummy and I'm not sure what the rest were...maybe a swamp creature?? Does anyone rembember these?

Interesting that all three of these slide puzzles were made by the Roalex Company and that the Frankenstein one was #201. I wonder how many different ones were made by Roalex in all and whether anyone has catalogued these slide puzzles in a book.

Oh, please allow me to provide full disclosure.
I collect...images.
Of course, I also have mountains of stuff, but I am a revenues image collector. It used to be book and magazine clippings. Now it's mostly digital. I have some sliders myself, but I located these images (which are wonderfully huge scans) in a Flickr collection. I'm not sure I still have the link, but you can try searching the Flickr site. Some amazing collections there. Some have generous scans.
As far a prices go, someone is trying to sell "The Impossibles" one on eBay for $300. :/

Among the most interesting collectibles Playboy spawned over the years was the series of canned Playmate Puzzles that came out in the early seventies. Here's a good list:

Nope, not a chicken.

It was Alien. But this raises the question--which came first, the Alien or the egg.

I'm not sure of the provenance of this Bat Slide Puzzle from 1966:

The bat puzzle does look like it could be Plastic-Trix. It has the same skull and headstone illustrations, and some of the same monster illustrations on the card, too, and both are made in Brooklyn, NY.

Here's the last slide puzzle that I have, it's a Popeye from 1974. It's made by Toy House who also made little two or three inch tall versions of the Colorforms Outer Space Men which are hard to find today...

I have two Addams Family Mystery puzzles. They come with a mystery story you read, then you assemble the puzzle to solve the mystery.

Star Puzzles were made in New York from 1967 to 1969 by Adult Leisure Products Corp. They came in a round tin film canister, but I've also seen them packaged assembled on a cardboard backing sealed in cellophane with a label on them.
They are round puzzles about 18" in diameter with unusually shaped pieces. Each one is either in black and white, or sepia-toned, or black with one light color replacing what would be white in a B+W photo. I've seen Marilyn Monroe, Jean Harlow, W.C. Fields, and a couple of others I can't recall. They are hard to find. I have a Marilyn Monroe plus the three that are monster related. Here is my Bela Lugosi/Dracula canister...

And here is my assembled Lugosi puzzle. I assembled it, took the photo thinking it was missing one piece, took it apart, then found the missing piece, so, I'm happy to say it's actually complete. If they weren't so challenging to assemble I'd make it again and retake a pic of the complete puzzle.

Yes--that, along with the odd shapes make them challenging.

Here's another Star Puzzle--Lon Chaney as Quasimodo.

Besides being packaged in the metal film canisters I've seen some that were packaged assembled on a cardboard backing and wrapped in cellophane with a label on the cellophane. So, my Lon Chaney must've came like that and someone saved the label.

Here's one on e-bay showing the alternative packaging...

After doing my Bela puzzle I found the missing piece mixed in with my Mr. Hyde puzzle pieces.

I don't know how much someone might be willing to pay for one of the Lugosi Star Puzzles, but I do know that in their metal canisters they are pretty hard to find, and in the cellophane packaging they are even more hard to find.

Here's the last of my monster-related Star Puzzles. It's John Barrymore as Mr. Hyde. I also have the Marilyn Monroe Star Puzzle, but I haven't assembled it yet.

That's the one I like the best! Green Hornet's Black Beauty cars for the TV series were evidently built by Hollywood carmaker Dean Jeffries and based on 1966 Chrysler Imperials.

Aurora issued a fabulous Black Beauty model kit in 1966:

Speaking of cans as well as puzzles, among the most interesting collectibles Playboy spawned over the years was the series of canned Playmate Puzzles that came out in the early seventies. Here's a good list:

Is this your puzzle? I think somebody put the wrong puzzle in the box. That can't be right!

Yes, that is my puzzle; I actually assembled it. The box even says that the puzzle doesn't match the front artwork. This was actually a higher priced, premium (?!?) "Golden Mystery Puzzle", where a booklet comes with it and you read along with the psuedo-Hardy Boys detectives and try to solve the mystery, with clues in the puzzle itself. Why Golden licensed the Mummy for this puzzle is the real mystery (the copyright on the puzzle, itself, is attributed to Universal). What they SHOULD have done is make it a more difficult two-sided puzzle, with the Mummy on the reverse side.

I'll accept that moniker. Here, in keeping with my villainous abilities, is yet another example from my collection, of a box from a long-ago-time. A time much different than today. a time when young people would wake up early on Saturday morning just to watch the special programs that aired on TV. Inside this box are many pieces of cardboard with printing on them. If you can arrange the smaller pieces correctly, you will arrive at a larger composite image of color, and depth of clarity. Is the assembled image similar to the image on the box, or is it different?  The answer to that question lies in your  ability, to arrange each piece in relation to every other piece correctly. Time is running out...

Jigsaw does at least have a puzzle pattern on his costume, or is that his skin?

Here's some interesting heroes--THE MIGHTY HEROES, created by Ralph Bakshi for Terrytoons in 1966. Bakshi would go on to make many animated films like FRITZ THE CAT ( the first animated film to receive an X rating ), WIZARDS, AMERICAN POP, FIRE AND ICE (based on Frank Frazetta characters), and an animated LORD OF THE RINGS in the 1970's. The MIGHTY HEROES have some funny names like Rope Man and Diaper Man, and Cuckoo Man...

I have a bunch of Whitman frame tray puzzles from the 1960's. This one is Shazzan, which is another one created by Alex Toth for Hanna-Barbera, he also created THE HERCULOIDS, and SPACE GHOST. It was a cartoon about two siblings Chuck and Nancy who travel around on a flying camel named Kaboobie aided by Shazzan, a magical genie.

Here's another one from my collection. It's a hard to find Flintstones boxed puzzle featuring the Gruesomes, who were a kind of  Addams Family that moved in next door to the Flintstones...

That's right. The Gruesome also made appearances in the Flintstones comic books of the time, too. I've got a pretty good collection of The Gruesomes collectibles. Here's the completed puzzle...

I like the Gruesomes, too. They did make a few Gruesomes collectibles. I have a coloring book, a Big Golden book, some small plastic figures, wrapping paper, a super 8mm home movie, this puzzle, and some Flintstones comic books in which they appear.
