Although Lucio Fulci's classic was called Zombie!, and the nude girl vs. zombie vs. shark underwater scene ranks as one of the top 10 scenes in the history of cinema... (well, close at least) this isn't about that. This is about a zombie that was much closer to the hearts and burned into the minds of many monster kids.
I'm sure most of you who read Famous Monsters in the early 70's remember this appearing on the back of some issues for a while, in full color.
I always thought it was cool, a long haired rocker zombie! I remember showing it to my mom and her reply... "I thought you wanted Frankenstein or Phantom or something. That thing is $39.50 and even if you had $39.50 you are NOT going to get that mask. It's a hippie!" She didn't think much of hippies...
It was priced like the Don Post masks, and sometimes appeared in the same ad, so for years I thought it was made by Don Post. Actually it was made by former Don Post employee Verne Langdon. Langdon is also responsible for Electric Lemon Records, famous in our circle for Phantom of the Organ, Vampyre of the Harpsichord, etc. In 2002, he released a CD called Music For Zombies, and reprised the photo from FM for the cover:
Verne Langdon is an interesting fellow, and if you are curious about him, there's a great interview at Boxomonsters.com
http://www.boxofmonsters.com/langdon1.html
Someone pointed me to it once when I mistakenly called it a Don Post mask. Here's what Langdon had to say about it:
Your ZOMBIE mask is considered an icon. How did that mask come to be?
After I left Don Post Studios, while at CBS I decided to sculpt at home just for fun. I did a "Neanderthal man" which was kind of interesting, and The Zombie. Milt Lewis was by then doing photography for me, and he captured both on film, and I sent the color transparencies to Jim Warren. The next thing I knew I received a check from Warren Publishing for cover art, and The Zombie was on the cover of the CREEPY SPOOKTACULAR 1972 ANNUAL. I got a big kick out of that, and after that issue hit the stands Jim called to say he was getting inquiries as to when & where his readers could buy the mask. We struck what seemed like a fair price back then, so in my spare time I made Zombies. I got tired of that real quick, and turned the project over to a makeup artist Friend (the late Terry Smith).
I'd always assumed ZOMBIE was a Don Post mask, but it wasn't! So you turned Zombie production over to Terry Smith. Between yourself and Terry, how long did production of that mask go on? About how many did you turn out? Do you still have a photo (or sculpture) of the Neanderthal?
I think between myself and Terry Smith we did The Zombie masks for maybe a year. I recall making less than a dozen. About that time my partner in Electric Lemon Records, creator of Hollywood's famed Magic Castle - Milt Larsen - was opening his Mayfair Music Hall out in Santa Monica, and Milt and I were writing songs for the show. I was directing the first show as well, and working by then at CBS, and then later writing and producing for Stan Freberg (Stan lured me away from CBS to work at his Freberg, Ltd. - but not very! - advertising agency). My plate was full. I needed somebody to do The Zombie, and Terry was willing. He probably did less than two dozen before Jim Warren retired the ad. Somewhere, in stored boxes of files documenting my life, there exist some color transparencies of The Neanderthal Man.
So there's a bit of history. They made about 30 of them total, and of that, there are only 2 known to still exist.
Several years ago, Kelly Mann "The Mask Doctor", in cahoots with Langdon, did a resculpt of the mask. Langdon himself only had pictures. They made 30 of them and broke the mold. Here's Kelly's story:
http://www.maskdr.com/Zombie/index.html
Those sold for $140 when they were released, but have rapidly escalated in price. There is an original for sale for $3000 last I heard...
There were a few recasts made. Someone with an original allowed a mold to be made from it, and I'm a little foggy on the details, but apparently Langdon got wind of this and shut them down. Now I'm not one to go violating people's copyrights, but I've really wanted one of these masks, and I didn't make the thing. If I'd been in the know when the Mann version was issued... but I wasn't. Even still, the Kelly Mann version is great, but it's not the same. The recast is about as close to an original as you can get. People who own them tend to hold onto them, and rarely do you see anything offered for sale or trade. I recently did manage to acquire one though, and that hole in my mask icons collection is finally filled. ;D

While I was looking for some pictures and information to compose this post, I ran across a really odd photo that has to be included as well. It's the Kelly Mann mask and it was on a blog that was in another language and had some other pictures that were decidedly adult in nature. This one, I had to do a little photoshop work to cover up some things that were falling out to make it UMAble and family friendly.

WOWWEE WOWWEE WOWWEE
Wow, you really do your homework, thanks for posting this, it was a fun read. The mask itself is kind of iconic.
A few years ago good ole' Verne was selling Zombie shirts based on this mask and also a Zombie tiki mug from Trader Verne's which I kept putting off buying. Then they ran out and the last I saw was that they had up the "last" one and wanted like $400 or $500 or something ridiculous like that.
Man why didn't I buy that mug when I had the chance.......
Very nice...both versions! :o
Very nice score!
I added hair to one of those for somebody a couple years ago

You and me both.
I did nab the shirt though. Haha

Unfortunately, no...
Great stuff Bobby. Thats one of Klung's photos I believe.
I was lucky enough to get one of Kelly's limited recreations of the Langdon Zombie. But then I had a serious problem... since this wasn't a familiar Universal Monster, I didn't know quite what kind of a context to put him in. Then I thought about the long hair and especially the oblivious facial expression and I knew exactly what I needed -- a laid-back surfer-type, slightly chilled to the gills, warming himself with rum and nicotine, and reading an article about his own fame while he slips, most gracefully, out of his chair:
I really don't know why but Verne stopped sending me his usual monthly newsletter almost immediately after I circulated this photo amongst a few friends. I guess I must have misinterpreted something about his original sculpt.... :-[
I loved reading this thread and thought it was a fitting place to post a pic of a recent score of mine. To me at least it was obvious where the artist's inspiration came from. ;)

Haha. Love it!
Awesome thread guys!
Bobby, congrats on scoring a zombie recently! As you mention, it's a true mask icon. In my humble opinion, one of the coolest monster masks of all time. I scored a recast at Maskfest about 3 years ago. Although it's a recast, it's one of my most prized masks in my collection. I re-haired it earlier this year...
I also scored a bald Night Owl version just over a year ago at Maskfest 2012. I added the hair to this one too...
Here are the two together...
Here is another of my very favorite other zombie masks, the Bayshore Zombie. While both of these are recasts, if I had to widdle my collection down to just 10 pieces, these would both be included...
I agree, Pete. I have drastically reduced my mask collection, and I feel the same way about my zombies:

I know this thread is positively ancient, and this is considered necroposting. I cannot think of a better thread to bring life back to than one about a zombie though. Does anyone know if there are any variations, tributes or anything of that nature that are available or planned for the subject of the Verne Langdon's Zombie?
Seems a shame for the newer collectors out there not to know who he is, and have him in their respective collections in some form of representation. Especially as popular as zombies are these days. I have been collecting for years myself....and don't have anything of this particular beast in my collection either. Although I may be getting the figure they did if the website is still active and hasn't went belly up.
EDIT: Turns out the website is vital and active, and they have some cool merchandise for sale on there.

Thanks in advance to anyone wishing/willing to point anything out to me with regards to my query, it would be most appreciated.

Don't know of anything new, but in my collection I have the Mann reissue mask #15/30, 1972 Creepy Annual (FN+), and the Music For Zombies CD by Verne. Here are a couple of pics off the net of the latter two mentioned items (that '72 Creepy Annual looks a little rough, maybe VG).

I just ordered the CD...thanks! I also ordered the figure from the Langdon website, and the coa is the mag ad reproduced so thats a cool bonus..... maybe someone will do a tribute version of the mask (we all know there's only one original in existence, and I believe Crimson Ghost has it). But if someone could do something noticeably different, I would want one. Others may as well. Kind of like Ole Shock Monster. GOT ANY PICS OF YOUR MASK YOU WANNA SHOW OFF?
Definitely worth bumping this thread. There are probably a ton of old threads that deserve to be resurrected. Actually, this made me a bit sad. Almost none of the posters in this thread post anymore. Where did everybody go? :(

Of course the one to have is RetroRubber's version because
Verne Langdon supervised its creation. NightOwl Productions
and Death Studios both released their own interpretations of
the character. Whether or not they're still available, I can't say.

Those are pretty cool too. Of the three shown, that Mann version is the fave. With only 30 made I may as well not try for that one though, lol. Not likely to happen. I keep hoping Trick or Treat will do a version.
The Night Owl version is sweet. Dunno if its available these days though.
I guess this is the Night Owl/ Justin Mabry tribute. Anyone know anything regarding price or availability? i am assuming its probably the least expensive option vs. Mann,,,,and I don't think the Death Studios is for me. Too different imho. But this version is close enough to the original design to be satisfying. I like the neck bib too.

I dont mean to necro-bump this thread but I was curious if anyone knew how many copies Dwayne Whitehead produced of his version?
Supposedly less than 10 altogether. But if I remember the noise that got started (some controversy) there were folks claiming to have original first generation strikes that were not produced by Mr. Whitehead. There are various threads around here about this subject. One was titled something like "rotten smelly Zombie" or some such that was offered on ebay. There was also a bit of chatter on other forums. HMA maybe?
I really would like a copy of the mask of some sort. But since I have no idea what I am doing, and don't wish to be taken advantage of, I probably will never own anything. Unless Langdon's estate decides to do another tribute of some sort, or alllow someone else to.
My bad: "rotten" was the word for one encounter from someone on ebay:
http://www.universalmonsterarmy.com/forum/index.php?topic=21956.0 (http://www.universalmonsterarmy.com/forum/index.php?topic=21956.0)
Addendum: in the thread above is a member named propman. He may ahve more information as to how many were produced, as he seems to be Mr. Whitehead. I make this assumption from reading the thread....but I cannot be certain. Cheers.
Another enlightening thread. Don't worry about necro-posts. The dead return to life regularly here.

This one was up on eBay recently but ended unsold. I got it from a very reliable source that this version was cast by Dwayne Whitehead from an original Langdon Zombie mask. It is the closest you'll get to having the real thing. The seller was asking $600.00. They may have had a change of heart as they mentioned the only reason they were selling it was to finance another mask purchase.

I contacted them after the auction ended.... and it was sold off the books. IE NO EBAY.
$600 was a bit too steep for me I'm afraid.
I guess I will stick with my figure his estate sold and my cd. Probably never gonna own any copy, of any rendition, of this character unfortunately. Everyone seems to love him as much as Shock Monster....but he never seems to stay in circulation....and always only a smattering of editions (less than 50) when he does see a new version. So I'm just gonna give up and be content with my figure. :'(

That's an eBay no no. :o Yeah, the chances of finding an affordable Langdon Zombie mask are zero to none. Shock Monster is a lot easier since Justin Mabry and ToTS have the license.

Well, it might be an ebay no no....but not in this case. The auction
had already ended....with no bids. Just watchers. I am sure they probably just sold it to one of the HMA or UMA fellas... since it ran its course on ebay and no one was brave or rich enough to pull the trigger. So no ebay.
I was merely inquiring if they were going to re-list it, as the temptation was great. They then informed me they sold it at another venue other than ebay and got what they wanted from it. So no one was doing anything underhanded to keep ebay out of the loop. Ebay and ebayers (like me) had our chance.....and no one ponied up the dough. So the seller moved on. Happens alla time.
As for rights to the Langdon Zombie....as a mask....why doesn't the estate make a new one? They have for Neanderthal and made a mask of the Druid Seance album cover. Why doesn't the estate make a new version? Or license someone else to? They plaster the Zombie's mug on Figures, shirts, pins, cds and...wait for it... mugs, lol. Why not masks? 8) ???

Good question and one that many have asked before.
Add me to the list then I guess, Glenn, lol. I would be happy to buy a nice mask to help keep the character alive. Eventually, he will become as obscure a reference as some other Don Post masks of the past if they don't re-invigorate him in some way for the public. Don't get me wrong....I love alll the other trinkets I have. Especially the figure. But, like Shock Monster, he started as a mask. Seems fitting to have a mask of some sort.

I don't know what the deal with that is exactly, but I can say...
That seller is a bit dubious, I believe he's listed recasts in the past and not listed them as such.
That mask is not from Dwayne Whitehead's mold. His mold is the only verifiably authentic 1st gen recast mold. Therefore, its uncertain if this is a 1st or 2nd gen recast. But it is a recast. I
The description is intentionally vague. There is no useful information in that description. If someone wanted to sell a mask for $500 they'd write a better description then
" Vintage Retro Creepy " Zombie" Ghost Monster Horror Creature Monster "I believe that it's been recently haired, at least in the last couple years.
Its got a sloppy paint job or something was spilled on it as there are drips around the neck.

Heres the deal with the Zombie (as I understand): There are 3 original, there is one re-cast mold from one of those 3 and less then a dozen masks from that mold (I believe), There is Kelly Mann's resulpt approved by VL. I think there are 30 of those (http://www.maskdr.com/Zombie/index.html (http://www.maskdr.com/Zombie/index.html)). Anything else is an original sculpt that VL had nothing to do with.
The local pick up only thing (and the price of course ) led me to question what it was. It really is a shame that such an iconic character in the mask and Monster kid world is only available in the most unconventional mystique like ways, lol.
It's good to know for future reference that the only good recasted version came from Mr. Whitehead.
Thanks for the observations and for having similar thoughts as to the somewhat "wonky" nature of the listing. Makes me feel a little better. I hate to think the worst of folks, and it often gets me in trouble, lol.

The original Zombie mold would not have been in the DP inventory. This was an independent mask that VL made after he left DP.

It is the closest you'll get to having the real thing. The seller was asking $600.00. They may have had a change of heart as they mentioned the only reason they were selling it was to finance another mask purchase.

Great mask! Around time 5:40 is an amazing Wolf Man bust. Also, the Myers 2 in the back ground is amazing.

I liked the commercial he opened the video with as well. I like the time I grew up in for the most part. Good era to be a kid.
Apparently at one point in time, a Langdon Zombie Tribute mask was a possibility at Trick or Treat. Look above the Twisty outfit. Even has a neck tag. Who knows....maybe one day they will follow through with it. I would love an affordable version to pass candy out at Halloween time. 8)

That doesn't look like the same mask to me it definitely looks like someone was tributing the Verne zombie with the sculpt on the shelf in the photo; there looks to be a more circular pattern on the sculpt like Langdons.

KA...I think ZOMBIEHORROR is right. I don't think it is the Radioactive mask, unless they altered the sculpt and changed the hair do because a deal couldn't be reached. Closer look: unmistakable mouth, pebbly skin and veins in neck bib present .

My Bad.
Maybe he will be present in the 2018 or 2019 catalog, lol.
Should be interesting to see.Hey Glenn any updates from TOTS.
Glenn is our #1 mask guy here I think. At least the #1 who actually is fully engaged and interacts with us.
Hey guys, I actually asked Chris about ToTS doing a Langdon Zombie mask. He said that they were going to and that the Langdon estate initially agreed to it but backed out before it could happen. Not sure if any protos were made though. That pic Anton posted sure looks like one.
Got any sneaks or inside intel on the 2018 catalog?
Nothing since they posted the 2018 catalog cover.

Don't they realize we need out fix? It's January! October will be here before you know it!
Thanks for the update Glenn.

Left to right:
Whitehead 80's mold re-cast Langdon Zombie mask, Verne Langdon official Zombie 1/6 figure, Justin Mabry Night Owl Zombie mask (once in the collection of Sandy Collora (director of Batmna Dead End, World's Finest, and Shallow Water), yesterdays Pin, and Music CD. I also scored a very fine condition copy of the Creepy 1972 Annual (not pictured). So unless someone eventually makes a Mego figure or a resin kit....or Trick or Treat makes a mask...my yen for VLZ is momentarily satiated. Bottom pic shows Mabry personally signed the mask to "Sandman" Sandy Collora. Hope you like. Celebrate with me!!!

Great score Anton! Congrats!
Anyone hunting a re-cast, there's one on ebay right now. Done up by the Tharps (big names in the mask community from what I understand). Not a bad price considering they did it up. I have seen less desirable masks get this much done by them. Glad I already secured mine. I don't have the money I used to for this sort of stuff, lol. I hope this helps someone. I live to serve, lol.

Speaking of Zombies; I understand these little gems made their debut at the Verne Langdon booth this Monsterpalooza. Naturally they aren't available for sale on the website (I want one!). I also wanted one of those stickers they sold last year. Those were never put up on the site either. Bummer.

Damn! The timing is terrible on this. I am holding an any new acquisitions until Mask Fest in August.
With regards to the Verne Langdon Zombie mask.....everything else can wait in my opinion. These are almost never seen. When they do, they always get sold and then there's always 15-20 watchers left muttering expletives under their breath, lol.

This is the last one, btw. Dwayne, the originator of the re-cast, commented on FB that he's retired the mold. He had provided a few to the Tharps, all of which they've sold. This last one was their personal copy. Congrats to anyone who got one while they were available.
Heres a pic of the one I got last year, with a few buddies:

Looking good Josh. Dang shame folks don' hang ontop something so unique and done especially for them. Mine is a treasured item, and as long as it took me to finally acquire one, its going to the grave with me,lol. Just kidding. But I will keep it til I am no longer on earth at least. You need to nab a figure to go with your mask. Go back a page or two to see mine. its great and still on the website "world of verne langdon".

Yeah, I'm not crazy about that figure. I used to have all the 1/6 Sideshow monsters, like 50+ or something, I don't remember how many they made, and I think I got 1/6 scale pretty much out of my system. I might buy the most recent Zombie tiki mug though. Thats kinda cool and I'm slowly getting into tikis

Josh...if you are able to find me a link to buy the tiki mug and the bottle opener, I would be thrilled!!! They really need to work on updating their online store. For people like me..... who go nowhere, lol.
Does anyone know the edition size of the figure? Hello Richard! LOL

OK, from what I had heard online, it was supposed to break down like this:
72 Deluxe Box Graveyard Zombies
72 Regular box Graveyard Zombies
72 Tiki Hawaiin shirt Zombies.
72 of each edition because the mask was released in 1972. 216 total figures if combine all 3 types.
At least that was the last chatter I got on it around the time I bought mine.
I'm not sure I want the figure without owning the mask, which is highly unlikely at this point. Anyone have the figure but not the mask?
JP
I had the figure well before I had a copy of the mask. It was all I could get until I eventually scored a Whitehead mask and then a Mabry Nightowl mask.

Having bought the figure first, and not knowing if you'd ever get the mask, obviously you could've lived with just the figure I'm assuming.

Yes....the figure is great. If it would've been all I could get; I would've been happy enough. At the time I was holding onto hope that ToTS would eventually do a version of the mask. My constant searching paid off, and letting folks know what I was looking for. Rob (thehorrorman) set me up with the Mabry (which was in the collection of Sandy Collora and is even signed on the inside of the mask to him from Justin Mabry). The Dwayne Whitehead mask made its way into my collection in a rather timely way as well after constant searches. I say go for the figure.
Just pulled the trigger on the VL zombie figure. Went with the one in the wooden box. Looking forward to it.
