Title: Booberry, Count Chocula, Frankenberry, and Fruit Brute
Post by: toysfortheages on May 10, 2012, 10:45:28 PM
Just curious.... Does anyone here care about and/or collect 70's era General Mills monster cereal boxes?

I love them (Especially Frankenberry).  I love all of the novelty merchandise like the new plush baby versions of the characters.  I wish that they would have included Yummy Mummy and Fruit Brute in the set!

I love all old cereal boxes not just the monster ones. To this point though I've never taken up collecting them.

Yes, please do. We'd love to see your box collection.

I just bought some the other day. If you have a Big Lots near you, you might be able to find it. I bought it for 1.50.

What I understand is that in order to maintain copyrights and/or trademarks, they have to produce a certain amount each year. That may be totally bogus information, but it would explain the rare seasonal appearance of these old cereals.

The only cereal box I have is a Super Sugar Crisp box, but with a monster premium ad on it.  My understanding is that there are only 3 or 4 of these known to exist.

Cool!  What year are those from?  In today's world Post would be probably be shut down for having a cereal that boasts SUGAR in the name and features a 1970's black urban stereotype mascot named SugarBear, LOL.  Now they're called "Golden Crisp" and have Diggem' the Frog.

Diggem' is the mascot for Kellog's Honey Smacks; Sugar Bear is still with Post cereals, Golden Crisp!

True, true. I get angry just thinking about how sugar has been demonized by the Association of Hysterical Mothers of America.

Nope, it's the actual cereal. I bought it shrinked-wrapped, in Florida. I have NO idea,
why the shoppe shrinked-wrapped all their cereals? Weird, though. I'll take some
more shots of the box. :D

I have a bunch of General Mills Monster boxes and I usually shrink wrap them to keep the dust off them and keep them white and finger print free. Some are pretty valuable such as the ones with Dracula on the Count Chocula and Frankenstein on the Franken Berry. But you want to make sure there is a breathing hole in the wrap, or sometimes the wrap with continue to shrink over the years and crush your boxes.

I don't have a lot of pictures of most of my boxes right now. Unfortunately most of them are still in storage from when we moved over a year ago. But, on the plus side, the move allowed me to fill all my voids with new stuff.

Here is a picture from last year of our kitchen corner, where most of the food items and cereal monsters end up that were not packed away. I will have to take some closer up pictures. This one was taken to show off some apes heads I was selling (if you like Apes stuff check out the Flickr account--there are plenty of photos of that there).

Hepcat, I find that I make a much better collector that I make a board member.

It might be because my collection is so varied and my attention shifts from one to another and I often buy what strikes me, which with a thing like eBay is always some thing new. I collect and have/do belong to boards for monsters (here) 2 Planet of the Apes boards, one for Cereal items, one for robots and space toys, one for Masters of the Universe, and one for Megos.

I do however get my fix of talking to collectors by doing and going to a fair amount of shows.

Sorry, I don't know the collecotrs you mentioned, or have never run across them one here. Maybe there should be an Apes apperciation thread--and I would certainly like to see one for Monster art.

Here are a few more pieces that Jonathan did that are Cereal Monster related (that I still need to frame, when I stop spending money on more toys).

Frankenberry  http://jawart728.deviantart.com/gallery/?offset=48#/d3g791x (http://jawart728.deviantart.com/gallery/?offset=48#/d3g791x)

Count Chocula   http://jawart728.deviantart.com/gallery/?offset=48#/d3g70h2 (http://jawart728.deviantart.com/gallery/?offset=48#/d3g70h2)

Boo Berry       http://jawart728.deviantart.com/gallery/?offset=48#/d3g70ym (http://jawart728.deviantart.com/gallery/?offset=48#/d3g70ym)

Karloff as Frankenberry     http://jawart728.deviantart.com/gallery/?offset=48#/d3g79yy (http://jawart728.deviantart.com/gallery/?offset=48#/d3g79yy)

Lugosi as Chocula  http://jawart728.deviantart.com/gallery/?offset=48#/d3g7b21 (http://jawart728.deviantart.com/gallery/?offset=48#/d3g7b21)

And for the shameless plug I know he does have at least a few more copies of each left (which were signed and numbered) for sale on etsy (http://www.etsy.com/shop/JAWart (http://www.etsy.com/shop/JAWart)) and if you put "UMAmember" in the apply shop coupon code section at checkout time you could save 10% off.

i too love the nostalgia factor of these cereals. i have a few plushes and the funko bobbles and fruit brute is of course my favorite.  I would love to get the original banks but they go for  big bucks on ebay and i have yet luck out at the swap-meet or yard sales.

I am one of the top cereal box collectors in the world. The Sugar Crisp glow monster heads are one of my favorite cereal toys and I have one of the 12 or so boxes known to exist. I will eventually post a picture of another great Sugar Crisp box which is the only-known sample (at this time) of a 1975 box which had the 11x14 glow monster posters. This particular box was released immediately after the aforementioned glow monster heads and has only 1 sample known to exist. Why this is so when there are a dozen of the glow head boxes remains a mystery. - Robb

So..
I'm in the middle of moving , and I finally "gained access" to my collection of cereal boxes. They are all "broken down flat" ,
and still somehow take up a buncha room. Thats why I didnt have access, because I have them packed into crates, (sort of the way I keep my vinyl) & those crates were all up in my closet where I couldnt reach  ::)..
Just so you know, its going to take forever to take out "handfuls' and take pics.
I only did one handful /stack right now. . so you can see the sheer volume I'm dealing with here.

oh , and these boxes were mixed up in the handful i grabbed out .
i love all monster related boxes .

I couldnt find my plush count, boo & franken. . Im sure I will come across them soon,
and my POP vinyl ones got packed 2 weeks ago, when my first living room got boxed up  :(
Boooooo ..
now theyre gonna miss out on the group picture . sigh.

Oh man, so do I! Cereal boxes are wild cool! Did you eat all those cereals yourself or do you have an aftermarket source for boxes? Are aftermarket boxes more expensive if they have not been broken down and flattened?

 ???

And don't even consider sending Scatter any of your paper collectibles! He lives in hot and humid Florida which is death to collectibles!

I only did one handful /stack right now. . so you can see the sheer volume I'm dealing with here.

some of my other stuff. .

and this is a cute little watercolor paint thingy. .
i love it .

oh , and these boxes were mixed up in the handful i grabbed out .
i love all monster related boxes .

I couldnt find my plush count, boo & franken. . Im sure I will come across them soon,
and my POP vinyl ones got packed 2 weeks ago, when my first living room got boxed up  :(
Boooooo ..
now theyre gonna miss out on the group picture . sigh.

Too cool MissD! I love those bobbleheads!

missdead13--- Nice Trick or Treat bag! I also really like that little water color paint set.

Here's my cereal figures. I recently just got Boo Berry from this set, too. I'll have to take a pic of him, too.

I have a confession... I've never had any of those cereals. :(

heresy !!!

but I will confess, I've eaten enough for both you and I and all the other members here on UMA.

and that kinda answers one of Hep's questions.
wanted to know if I eat all my cereal myself, or buy the boxes from another source.
Alot of it is my own collection, [ cereal I bought and ate myself ] -
and I also have some vintage boxes that I probably did eat ,like from ages 2/3 on, but
my parents werent gonna let me save the box and be a " hoarder" , as Scatter so affectionately referred to me as... lol
so now,  when I come across boxes , either at antique malls or Ebay or wherever,
and I recognize the box, i buy it .

funny thing is I do remember " hoarding"/keeping stuff like that , even as a kid,
and my mom would come in my room with a trashbag, and just start mowing it down, throwing all my "stuff" away :(
If she only knew she was doing me a diservice, by making me an even WORSE/ ( lets say BETTER !!! ) collector as an adult .. hahaha

I have purchased vintage boxes of cereal that are flattened out already,
and purchased them still together with the cereal in it !
both are pricier than youd think. but i cannot help myself. .  when youre a lil kid, sitting at the table eating your cereal, staring at the box,
it somehow gets burned into your brain, and when I see those images now as an adult, I feel a compulsion to buy it.
I guess it is the same thing with all my toys and monsters.
Nostalgia :D

I still remember when the Monster cereals were shaped like buttons and had a completely different taste than the newer ghost shapes and when they added ghost and later bat marshmallows and monstermallows. I had a bowl with my family this morning.

I still remember when the Monster cereals were shaped like buttons and had a completely different taste...

Yep, really killed the flavor when they took away the frosted coating!  Make the monster cereal bars, gooing them up with a layer of melted marshmallow really brings that nostalgic flavor back!

On second thought, I could use a bit of Franken Berry as well. I have a housemate who reaches for raspberry flavoured items all the time although I myself much prefer blueberry. Count Chocula though is sold everywhere around here all year round so that's not a requirement.

The marshmallow changes are easy to see over the years but the actual cereal itself takes careful scrutiny of the cereal boxes and fond memories sifting. They started out small and quite hard with a sugary coat similar to frosted flakes or frosted alpha-bits, then over the years lost the sugar coating became bigger and more "airy," this is about the time when they switched dyes or something because they no longer changed the milk color a nice brown, pink or blue. Then the worst of all they switched to peanut flour (I have a peanut allergy.) I have written a few letters and even called them once to voice my dismay over the general limited availability  and taste of my once favorite cereals. Stupid General Mills with their whole grain kick and their cowtowing to the health nazi moms out there who think anything sugar must be banned with their serious reduction in sugar in all of their cereals, reminds me of the NYC mayor moron trying to ban large sodas.  If I want to buy a box of sugar laden rot my teeth goodness I should be able to! Parents who don't like dentists can buy cheerios or total they don't need to ruin everything else.

Not only has the shape/taste of the cereal changed so have the marshmallows and the look of the characters. Here is a progression, look closely at the cereal shape, round with four holes like a button and frosted, marshmallows are small and pencil eraser shaped. The first Count was drawn by George Karn and was a spookier version of a vampire with an odd craving for chocolate. Quickly his image is toned down to be less scary and more loveable however in commercials it is still the spookier count through the 70s and into the 80s. The loveable count adorns boxes and makes his way into commercials in the 80s. In 1971 Count Chocula is the first chocolate flavored cereal according to General Mills with chocolate flavored marshmallows.

New bigger marshmallows. The cereal is still round but now the marshmallows are shaped sort of like Count Chocula heads, Boo Berry Heads, and Frankenberry heads.

The cereal is now pac-man ghost shaped and the box says the cereal is now haunted.

The marshmallows are now called Monstermallows because of their monstrous size.

Next up for the marshmallows was the addition of bat shaped marshmallows.

In addition to the monstermallows now there are ghost marshmallows that have a flying ghost shape.

In 1988 in addition to the ghost and bat shaped marshmallows the monster cereals get new monstermallows in the shape of monster heads with possible bolts/electrodes on the sides.

This commercial announcing the debut of the new monstermallows (also in the 1st Yummy Mummy commercial I previously posted) shows Universal Monsters Bride of Frankenstein, Frankenstein's monster from Bride, Count Dracula, and the Mummy all endorsing the cereal. In 1987 Dracula and Frankenstein also were on boxes (previously posted) of Count Chocula and Frankenberry.

In the 1990s Count Chocula is completely re-vamped and the cereal no longer has a frosted coating. Guest appearances of marshmallow shapes have included Scooby-Doo and Casper the Friendly Ghost and Wendy the Witch over the years. Somewhere along the line the ghosts become sort of a flying ghost shape sometimes swirled and occasionally there are star marshmallows, wolves, and lightning bolts.

The downward progression of box art and character design continues through the  1990s and 2000s. In 1993 The Count is changed from the loveable Count.

(http://theimaginaryworld.com/mnbox03.jpg)(http://www.mrbreakfast.com/ucp/101_1304_ucp.jpg)(http://www.mrbreakfast.com/ucp/101_7635_ucp.jpg)(http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3501/3216844884_a4b24f4be4.jpg)

Characters changed again for the worse.

Since 2010 the box art has not changed. Even the back panel is the same. I personally hate the new character designs compared to the originals.

1971 Frankenberry is the first strawberry flavored cereal according to General Mills with strawberry flavored marshmallows.

1973 Boo Berry is the first blueberry flavored cereal according to General Mills with blueberry flavored marshmallows. He started out with droopy eyelids and a voice reminiscent of Peter Lorre. Then he sorta got skinny must have went on a diet, then turned sort of Casper-ish. Now well let's just not talk about what he looks like now. One thing to note is now the yellow hat and red bow tie are gone replaced with purple versions.

1974-1982 Fruit Brute cereal is multicolored to the other monster cereals monochromatic scheme and had lime flavored marshmallows.

1987-1990 Fruity Yummy Mummy is also multicolored like Fruit Brute but has vanilla flavored marshmallows. Yummy Mummy's body size started out smaller and became larger and sometimes more purple than the original yellowish-orange, pink and purple bandages. For some reason he was never considered one of the monster cereals by General Mills even though he was featured prominently in Count Chocula and Frankenberry advertising and commercials and had the same marshmallow changes.

Oh man! That's the one I like the best!

Despite all the changes/downgrades throughout the years, Boo Berry, Count Chocula, Fruit Brute and all are still part of a complete breakfast! And to complicate the picture, all the changes/downgrades of the cereal and box imagery have never been immediately implemented in Canada. An older variant of the boxes is typically found in Canada. Different market preferences here.

Apparently they didn't want to take a lot of effort to develope a new cereal and since Fruit Brute had been missing from the cereal aisles for a few years it was a simple switcharoo changing out the marshmallows and calling it a new product!  They have corrected that travesty with the new releases.

Checked 4 days in a row!! No monster cereals at either Target or Kroger but rumor on the Halloween Forum is that Shop 'n' Save has them out on the shelves!

Hey ZH, I just checked Shop 'n' Save!  They don't have them out yet either!

Same here..... I got all the other flavors, but frute brute was absolutely nowhere to be found. I am thinking it is based upon actual release date of when the factory is ready to make it. I bought all ,.......but frute brute......... and they have different times when the batches where made. It makes me think they haven't got around to making/shipping them yet. For 3 bucks at walgreens, you can bet i stocked up. It looks like their is gonna be a manhunt for Frute Brute. If any member finds it at a store, please share it with all.

Maybe the reason you couldn't find "Fruit Brute" was that there wasn't a full moon.:P

Count Chocula is sold in Canada year round, but I haven't seen the other monster cereals for years. Count Chocula has in fact replaced Coco Puffs which is no longer available on store shelves. Similarly, while Lucky Charms is always available, I haven't seen Trix for years in Canada.

The Target by me just yesterday cleared the Back to School shelves and I found a whole empty section with Halloween signage and end caps, so I suspect they'll have their Halloween stuff out by the end of the coming weekend. That's likely when they'll also put out the monster cereals.

My brother came through with the retro boxes from Target. My Target still doesn't have them. I scored a set to eat and a set to display the boxes. I liked Yummy Mummy better than Frute Brute but they were nowhere near what I remember from the original mummy and Fruit Brute. I still prefer Count Chocula and Boo Berry to the rest. Here is a vintage box for comparison. The new boxes are smaller.
Title: Re: Booberry, Count Chocula, Frankenberry, and Fruit Brute

I found the retro boxes at Target for $2.50 each on Wednesday 9/13/13 and bought them out. I bought 5 sets of each. I may have left a box of count choc or two. I filled up the whole cart. I have found the current boxes with the weird distorted art at Winco (just choc, frank, and boo) and at Walgreens for $3.00 each but they were missing Frute Brute so I only grabbed 4 out of the 5 kinds. Walmart and Macey's usually carry them in my area but have nothing so far. The new boxes and the retro boxes have the same back announcing the return of Frute Brute and Yummy Mummy and each has a monster fan quiz on the side panel that is different for each cereal flavor. I have eaten them ever since I can remember (hopefully they bring back the original recipe) but out of the new ones Orange Yummy Mummy is pretty tasty. They all are ok but none dye the milk anymore or have that delicious sugar frosting coating crunch, instead they are airy imitation pale shadows of their former glory.

He sure did! Those retro boxes are beauties! Our Target has most of the boxes, Walgreens has all except for Fruit Brute. Haven't seen that one anywhere in the wild.

It would appear that some exec at Walgreens definitely dropped the ball, because people nationwide are reporting Walgreens only has 4 out of the 5 monster cereals, they are missing Frute Brute. In my opinion the most important of the releases this year. A shelf space issue? Didn't want to take a chance on a relatively obscure product? Boy o boy are they stupid for choosing not to stock it. Not to mention that General Mills suggested sale price on their website and media releases is $2.50 a box for the monster cereals which Walgreens promptly jacked up to $3.00 a box. I am so disappointed in Walgreens right now.

So far the retro boxes seem easier to find than the "normal" frute brute boxes. I bought several sets actually. It seems very random however, many Target stores still do not have any available and seem clueless as to when or if they will be getting it when asked or called. Walmart and Maceys grocery stores traditionally carry these seasonal items but I haven't seen them there yet. People have been getting lucky at mom and pop markets and local grocers but I have tried many and came up empty. Seems the regular Frute Brute box will be the hardest to obtain rather than the exclusive retro boxes after all.

Ravenloft,

You might be right. I haven't found the new Frute Brute box yet either. But I don't mind chasing them a bit. It's fun and I get to look at the Halloween stuff at different stores while I'm out searching. Technically, it's still early in the Halloween season. I wouldn't worry. I'm sure you'll find some.

That simply is not correct. The cereal is no longer frosted. The new boxes state they are but they are vastly different than the frosted coating I remember (you can't even see it) the old coating was plainly visible. The monster cereals originally used refined oat flour and degermed corn meal. During the late 80s and 90s General mills switched to peanut flour but they are now using whole grain corn and rice bran. Fruit Brute was discontinued in 1982. Fruit Bruit was a button shape with four holes and a vastly different color than the modern cereal. Fruit Brute also had lime flavored pencil eraser shaped marshmallows called sweeties. Originally Fruit Brute had artificial grape, strawberry, orange, cherry, and lemon flavoring. The new cereal is cherry flavored. The design has changed. The shape has changed. The flavor has changed. The marshmallows have changed. The ingredients have changed. The name changed. The colors on the mascot changed. The employee you talked to had no clue what they were talking about.

New 2013 retro box

Fruity Yummy Mummy however is much closer to the original 1988 cereal. By 1988 when it debuted they would have still been using oat flour and degermed corn meal but the change to peanut flour was not long coming and may have occurred prior to Yummy Mummy's cancellation in 1992. The ingredients have changed but the flavoring is very similar. The marshmallows have also changed they used to be vanilla flavored Frankenberry shaped heads called monster mallows and later bats were added that were vaguely berry flavored but tasted like Lucky Charms marshmallows. Originally Yummy Mummy advertised that they had artificial grape, strawberry, pear, cherry, lemon, banana, orange, and pineapple flavoring. The new cereal is advertised as orange creme flavored. The new cereal has whole grain corn and rice bran. The cereal still looks similar and the mascot didn't change names or colors (retro box vs originals).

Fruit Brute also had lime flavored pencil eraser shaped marshmallows called sweeties. Originally Fruit Brute had artificial grape, strawberry, orange, cherry, and lemon flavoring....

Mmmmmmm!!!! And with a frosted sugar coating too!

The design has changed. The shape has changed. The flavor has changed. The marshmallows have changed. The ingredients have changed. The name changed. The colors on the mascot changed. The employee you talked to had no clue what they were talking about.

You tell the lying corporate bastard! And give him a couple of hard shots in the head while you're doing it to punctuate your point.

I've been able to get all five between two targets but they are selling like HOTCAKES!  Chocula doesn't last a second.

They had everything but Frankenberry at one of my Targets. I like the retro boxes, but just grabbed some Chocula (it's the only one I'll eat). I'm a happy camper now. Target also had a DVD and Blu Ray sale, so I got a DVD with Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires and 2 other Hammer flicks for $7. It really feels like Halloween is here now! (Despite the heat....)

Went to the other Target today.  Chocula is almost gone there.  Frute Brute is also low.  The others are all well-stocked.

Have you shown them your weapons? Advised them that you've stocked up on milk, which doesn't last forever .. just for this event?

Hope that you get your cereal soon or star shooting.

They had them all my my target, and I have been enjoying my monster cereals every morning.  Yummy Mummy wasn't bad for an orange cereal.  Kind of more had a tutie frutie flavor.  Frankenberry has been delicious this year, don't know why?  More sugar?  I carefully cut open each box to use them for display.

Still haven't found a regular frute brute box to complete the set. I have all the retros and 4 of 5 regular boxes but no joy until it is complete. Targets in my area all have abundant retros which are selling very well, Walgreens appears to still only carry 4 out of 5 normal boxes (missing the Brute), Winco is sold out of the regular 3 they had (missing the brute and mummy) Walmart, Macey's, Smith's, Harmon's, Reams, Associated foods, A fresh market, and all of the local mom and pop grocery stores I have tried have none.

So, now that a bunch of us has gotten these, how do YOU rank the flavors?
I bought 5 sets of retro boxes, 3 sets of regular boxes and 1 set of double wide boxes (finally found Booberry) for a total of 50 boxes this year.
Some were for my twin brother, some were for my collection to remain unopened, but that still left me with 3 boxes of each flavor to eat. Let me start by saying they are no where near as good as they used to be, I have eaten them practically my whole life so I am as much of an expert as anyone on Earth on how they have/do/should taste.

In the days of old Booberry was the most highly sought after for its unique frosted blueberry taste, obtaining legendary status and a cult following of devotees followed closely by Count Chocula because of its rich chocolate flavor. Frankenberry was great but the strawberry milk it produced was better than the actual cereal, which paled in taste to Strawberry shortcake cereal and would have gotten passed up if not for marshmallows and fellow Monster mascots.
Fruit Brute was strange with its lime flavored marshmallow bits and a kaleidoscope of fruit flavors so it was dead last out the the bunch in taste when it was available. Trix was a better blend of fruit flavors or even better yet Dinersaurs or fruity pebbles.  King of fruity cereals was Nintendo cereal but I digress. Yummy Mummy was the same cereal as Fruit Brute but with vanilla marshmallows so it was a great improvement on the recipe and bumped poor Frankenberry to the last when it was available. I believe sales statistics of each brand if they were ever available would show this same trend. Chocula was a strong contender for the most popular though.

Fast forward to today. the cereals are so bland tasting compared to the originals that it can hardly even be called the same cereal. Count Chocula tastes very similar to soggy-in-milk off brand coco pebbles or Coco Crispies, the richness of the chocolatey flavor is nearly gone. What happened to Booberry is just plain tragic as the taste fails completely without the frosting coating it once had. Still I pour a bowl now and then but it just sadly reminds me of how great it used to be compared to now. Frankenberry is nowhere near as sweet as it used to be but somehow it is less noticeable than the others with the strawberry flavor. Frute Brute is an entirely new flavor (cherry) and is an admirable attempt. It has an interesting flavor and is stronger taste than any of the current main three cereals that are usually available in the last several years. Yummy Mummy also is a brand new flavor abandoning fruit mix and vanilla instead of going with orange. I must admit I was skeptical and not that enthused by orange flavor which did not sound that appetizing. I was more than pleasantly surprised however, it tastes great, sorta like a orange sickle and has strong flavor unlike the others which are pale shadows of their former greatness.

In my opinion I rate the current cereal recipes as follows:
1. Hands down Yummy Mummy, it really is yummy and quite delightful, hard not to keep pouring another bowl when finished.
2. Frute Brute, interesting new cherry flavor that you can still actually taste
3.Count Chocula a bland almost flavorless "chocolate" taste that is only redeemed by marshmallows. Barely colors the milk now.
4. Frankenberry a bland but still pleasant strawberry flavor. Barely colors or flavors the milk now.
5. Booberry Oh how the mighty has fallen. A despicable shame that it does not taste anything like it used to. Weakly blueberry flavored. Sort of like eating blue packing Styrofoam peanuts. Barely colors the milk now.

I have had a box of each monster cereal available year in and year out for decades and will likely continue to do so, but I think that General Mills needs to bring back the original flavors and quit worrying about what health food nuts think. There are plenty of healthy cereals made for adults or cruel parents who won't buy sweetened cereal for their kids out there. These cereals were never about that, they were for purely for kids in a more innocent age loaded with rot your teeth sugary goodness. Just imagine the outcry if cupcakes were only available in nearly sugarless health food wacko recipes, Oh wait they actually have those and they are scoffed at by all except the deluded, who fancy themselves on a diet but are still putting away a box of cupcakes.

Bring back the sugar! Bring back the Frosted coating! Bring back the Flavor! Good job on the new Yummy Mummy! That is all.

Even better! Glad to hear it! :)

Ravenloft, love your review of each current version of the Monster Cereals! And yes, I'm all for having healthier versions of things (at the same price as the regular versions, please!) but as you say, one should always have access to the tastier, less healthy version.

And in the case of the Monster Cereals (especially now that these 5 only come out once a year) we really don't need healthy versions...we will all survive 3 boxes of each 1 once per year :)

At least FB and FYM have a lot of flavor, since we may not see them again after this year if they don't sell enough.

That would be General Mills fault, though, as both FB and FYM were shipped later, and in lesser quantitirs.

You have plenty of boxes....make some monster cereal treat bars!!!  You'll be surprised at how much that marshmallow coating brings back the flavor of old!!!

I've got to admit I am presently addicted to the Chocula Cereal Bars that General Mills already manufactures.  They are ten times better than the cereal itself.  But, I want to make some of my own too!

Yeah, I'm not sure why they don't make the other cereals into bars?!  All they do for Frankenberry and Booberry is fruit roll ups.

My change to the Monster bar recipe is to use strawberry marshmallow for Frank, Chocolate Marshmallows for chocula, and I bought some fruit flavored ones for fruit brute and mummy. Poor boo just gets the vanilla marshmallows.

Here's a picture of my first batch in 2009.

That box art was the best "modern" art in years.  Now Franken Berry and Boo Berry are unrecognizable, though I do like the Chocula.

I don't feel that these need any boost in flavor besides the marshmallow coating but heck, if you are wanting to kick Boo Berry up a notch try mixing in some blueberry syrup into the marshmallows!

So, now that a bunch of us has gotten these, how do YOU rank the flavors?

Quoting yourself, always fun! OK here's my unofficial ranking

5 BooBerry
4 FrankenBerry
3 Frute Brute
2 Yummi Mummy
1 Count Chocula

Chocolate always ranks 1 in our house, though I liked them all actually  8)

So my mom scored a Monster Bash magazine for me when bringing my kids a set of the cereals for Halloween. I never even saw this advertisement in any Target stores I went to. Did anyone else see this magazine published by General Mills?

The book is mostly a recipe book with a section on the monster cereals and treats to make with them like cookie stacks, pops, and bars. It has a section on "Chilling Cocktails" Halloween themed alcoholic beverages, "Bewitching Bites" Halloween themed finger foods, "Thrilling Entrées", "Devilish Desserts", and "Tricky Treats". There is a also a section on Halloween crafts and games, and "Haunting Home" a decorating ideas guide.

Old store display, the seller said 1971 but it obviously wasn't because Fruit Brute is on it; I'd say earliest would be 1974!  The seller was asking $1000 and the guy on the show (not Jordon, the main guy but one of his buyers) bought it for $800 for his private collection!

Sorry about the flash if you want to check out the episode it is $28K Wonder Woman from Wednesday, February 05, 2014!

This is the only pic I could find online (from an old Ebay auction) but it is listed as a mini-repro!

It isn't a store display. It was a mail-in offer for The Monster Mansion for $12.99 plus two proofs of purchase from the monster cereals. It is four feet tall. The offer expired on Nov. 30th 1982. It is the second box design the first being Count Chocula or Frankenberry up close eating the bowl of cereal with a spoon (Boo Berry curiously is not eating his). The second design is the monsters pouring milk on their cereal with a full body shot. It still has the original button shaped cereal bits with frosted coating and the eraser shaped marshmallow "sweeties".

I'm guessing there is zero luck we'll ever see the Lugosi and Karloff boxes.   The new Frankenberry reminds me of a cell shaded video game.

picked up retro style booberry, frankenberry, Count Chocula boxes with the cut out masks on the back from Target today, also Booberry and Frankenberry fruit roll ups in retro style art and Chocula treat bars in retro packaging. Off to get the regular boxes at Smith's tomorrow, my girl spotted them there. Walmart had none. I wonder if the fruit roll ups and treat bars will have different packaging than Target. Pics when I get all of them home together.

Here is what I found this year:
retro art style boxes at Target of the main 3 cereals with cut out masks and fruit roll ups and treat bars in retro art style. Sad beyond words that there is no Yummy Mummy or Fruit Brute this year.

Regular monster cereal boxes were spotted by me at Walmart, Walgreens, and CVS Pharmacy but were obtained the cheapest at 2.50 a box at Smith's grocery store. Not sure if fruit roll ups or treat bars with non retro packaging are available at other stores besides Target, I couldn't find any. Many of the Targets I visited had last year's box art style for Chocula without the cut out face mask, didn't actually check the expiration dates to see if it was old cereal too.

I picked up the retro boxes of Count Chocula, Frankenberry, and Booberry at Target today for $2.50 each. I checked Wal-Mart a few times earlier on with no luck. I already removed the bagged cereal and flattened the boxes out to throw into the old monster collection.

The treats and bars are indeed available at Kroger-owned stores like Smith's.  I found them and was disappointed to see that the Chocula bars had last year's art, while Boo and Franken had the updated artwork for this year.  Same problem as the retro Chocula boxes at Target.  I really hope they get another shipment with the real boxes.  I need my Chocula mask.

Count Chocula is the clear winner of the new box art.  Booberry is alright and Franenberry is horrible, he looks like a tween version of the character.

I don't like any of them. Count Chocula looks too much like a yuppy businessman, and Booberry looks like, well, a high school coach which is not a good ting.

Wonder why they aren't going to do Fruit Brute and Yummy Mummy?

Probably because they didn't sell enough last year.

...which is a shame, because the 2013 edition of Fruity Yummy Mummy absolutely obliterates the remaining monster cereals...and this is coming from a big fan of all three of the remaining ones. But still, I'm skipping them this year, since FYM13 set the bar so high that the others are not that amazing in comparison. :'(

I've seen pictures of them, and I understand there is more than one version with Dracula, because his medallion was said to look too much like a Star of David.

Pictures of the Lugosi or Karloff Monster cereal boxes are in this very thread way back on page 5 and yes the Dracula medallion caused a stir among General Mills execs who were worried that it may offend and was removed in a second version of the Lugosi box of Chocula

Expect to see a handful of variations in the packaging of this year's cereals. Target is selling exclusive packaging featuring a cut-out castle, while Walmart is offering glow-in-the-dark, cut-out masks of the Monsters. And good news for those of you in Canada: Boo Berry and Count Chocula will be returning to the shelves in the Great White North this year.

Yummy Mummy was awesome, but I also liked Fruit Brute, as I'm a fan of cherry flavor, in general. All 5 should have been brought back.

And while on the subject. What other monsters should have had cereals?
Well here's a sketch of four characters almost used by General Mills for a Multi Berry Flavored cereal that's idea was shelved all together:

Hey! I'm the artist of those proposed General Mills characters! Those were created sometime between 1998-2000 (when I worked at Saatchi & Saatchi in NYC; General Mills' ad agency at the time). If my memory serves me correctly, GM was considering consolidating Frankenberry & Boo-Berry cereals into a new "berry" cereal, and a new monster was thus needed. They may have also been considering a brand-new berry flavor to join the line, but at this point in time, the monster cereals were on the steady decline, which leads me to be live that my Frank/Boo consolidation memory is indeed accurate.
Being a huge monster cereal fan, I naturally jumped at the opportunity to contribute designs :)

Oh, thanks. I had always thought these were made in the 70's. But 1998-2000 makes so much more sense. Thanks for explaining this.

Oh, thanks. I had always thought these were made in the 70's. But 1998-2000 makes so much more sense. Thanks for explaining this.
The original monsters are all from the 70's and 80's, Count Chocula (chocolate cereal) and Frankenberry (strawberry cereal) debuted in 1971, Booberry (blueberry cereal) was added in 1972 and Fruit Brute (multiple fruit flavored with lime marshmallows) in 1974.
Fruit Brute was discontinued in 1982. The three main cereals Chocula, Frankenberry and Booberry have had continuous runs since the 70's. In 1987 Yummy Mummy (similar to fruit Brute, multiple fruit flavored cereal but with vanilla marshmallows) was added and was later discontinued in 1992.
by the late 90's monster cereals were no longer available year round, only released for distribution during the fall quarter season.
All five of the monster cereals were available during 2013 but with Fruit Brute's name changed to Frute Brute and with Cherry flavoring instead of the original multi-fruit, and Yummy Mummy with a new flavor reminiscent of orange creme-sicle.
After 2013, Yummy Mummy and Frute Brute have not been released since, and only the main three monsters Chocula, Frankenberry and Booberry have been on the shelves seasonally.

Pete is talking about the concept art for new berry characters that was never ultimately used by General Mills with his 1998-2000 comment.

I always thought there should have been a Creature form the blackberry Lagoon, a Bride of Frankenberry raspberry flavored, or a grape or Cinnamon flavored monster.

I'm well aware of all this as I was also talking about the concept art. I want Crunch Snack of Nuts and Grains but I think it's too clever.

I was being sarcastic.  I was pointing out that I think pretty much anyone who posts on this board knows the history of the monster cereals.  Now the joke is dead.  You killed it.   :P

Yes, I liked both when they came back in 2013 and 2013 Yummy Mummy was the greatest cereal I've ever had. I realize both 2013 Mummy and 2013 Brute were not their original recipes, but I can't imagine the original Mummy recipe being better than the 2013 one. I wish they never took the 2013 version away.

For some reason, I only saw the cereals in stores, once this year. Either in late September or early October. I don't know why, but I'm guessing maybe only small shipments of them went out.

In the last year or so I have had all of these monster cereals and I can't figure out the love for them. They are either very bland or in the case of Fruit Brute too sugary sweet. I'll stick to my Apple Jacks.

I bought the big family size boxes of Count Chocula, Frankenberry, Booberry, and Halloween Lucky charms, at Walmart early in October. First thing was to remove the cereal bags from the boxes and break them down, fold 'em up, and add them to the ever rising mountain of monster junk.   I've been snacking on the cereal for weeks. Still have some Count Chocula. I like to eat them dry while I'm watching movies and such. It's become somewhat of a ritual every October.  tynhrt

The original cereals had a frosted coating on the cereal itself, it was removed at some point in the 90's and the cereals have been bland ever since.  The closest you can get to the original flavor is to use the cereals to make "Rice Krispie treats", it's the only way I'll eat them.  Fruit Brute and Yummy Mummy were originally misc. fruit flavored cereal, like Froot Loops; Yummy Mummy actually replaced Fruit Brute when it was first introduced.  When they reissued them together they decided to change their flavoring up, Fruit Brute as cherry flavor and Yummy Mummy as orange flavor...but they still haven't put back on the frosted coating to any of them.

Where did you find the Brute in the last year or so? It's been five years since I last saw it :(

There was a little end cap at the local Jewel Osco here in the Chicago suburbs. Maybe 15-20 boxes max.
