Title: What are your favourite Aurora monster model kits?
Post by: Hepcat on February 13, 2012, 12:04:12 PM
Vote for your five favourite Aurora monster model kits!

Raycastile's site has some great pictures of assembled kits:

Gallery of Monster Toys (http://thegalleryofmonstertoys.com/60swing/60smainpage.html)

And here's a thread on the Aurora kits offering more pictures including ones of the box art:

I have to say the Phantom is my alltime fave. That diorama with the prisoner at his feet haunted me in my childhood.

I picked the following five but it was difficult to narrow down to five ...

Bride of Frankenstein
The Witch
Dracula's Dragster
Mummy's Chariot
Wolf Man's Wagon

I went with the Forgotten Prisoner and Frankenstein as my top two choices.  I've always been a sucker for a spooky skeleton figure and I would love to see a reissue of the glow version of the Prisoner.

My list and my reasons...
DRACULA I've always liked Dracula's evocative, unsymmetrical base and full cape over the body - for some reason I love all of that superfluous plastic!
FRANKENSTEIN is the classic - I marvel at the simple sophistication of the pose and base.  Check out the torn, weathered coat, the fold of the lapel, the wrinkles in his pants - beautiful details. And I don't understand people who criticize the sculpt of the face - especially when you consider it was sculpted 1:1 out of an acetate block!
WOLF MAN Lots of people don't like the Wolf Man because it doesn't look like the Chaney. I think as Lemon's artistic interpretation of a Wolf Man it's a winner. The agressive pose, like the Creature, is the most predatory and menacing.  I also like the base when contrasted with the rest of the Aurora line - it creates a variety in the bases which enhances the series.
CREATURE Like I mentioned above, the Creature's predatory pose, combined with the uber coolness of the character itself, put him on my list.
THE WITCH   That beautifully detailed base diorama put it on my list. I like the Bride for the same reason, but the Witch's dirty, musty hovel edged out the bride.

i voted for creature, phantom, hyde, quasi and maddog/vulture. only built creature and phantom once myself. others never built. but are in the mix.

built all the big 4 at least twice (frank, drac, mummy, wolfman).

The original six kits are perhaps not surprisingly polling well with only Wolfman failing to place among the top six:

Creature 21
Frankenstein 21
Mummy 16
Phantom of the Opera 14
Bride of Frankenstein 12
Dracula 12

I actually thought that the Bride might poll even better! The biggest surprise for me so far though is the strength of the Frankenstein kit in this poll since I think the Frankenstein is a fairly pedestrian sculpt. I guess a lot of respondents are voting for Frankenstein simply because that was the kit that drew them to monster modelling when it was introduced by Aurora in 1961.

I love the Frankenstein, especially the tombstone base. I agree with ChrisW about the face sculpt. I think it's great, taking in consideration it's from 1961. Superior to the recent Moebius Frankenstein IMO.

Yup, the Aurora Bride is a beauty! I also have to agree with all the positive comments about the Frankenstein face sculpt. It is a true icon of the sixties (and seventies). Think of all the classic toys that used it as inspiration... the Pez dispenser, the Monster Niks, the Ahi figures, to name a few that come to mind.

My faves and reasons:
1. Godzilla-This is not only my favorite Aurora, but my favorite kit of all time, period. It is one of the only original Auroras I had as a small tyke in the 70s. I remember the garish Aurora glow in the dark box and my dad building it for me. Later I had the Monogram reissue from 1978 several times. A HUGE part of my childhood.
2.Frankenstein-fast forward to 1983. I'm 12 and just starting to get into the human sized classic monsters (I'd always been a big fan of giant monsters like Godzilla, Harryhausens and dinosaurs). A new UHF station has just started up and every friday they have a triple feature horror show-Theatre Bizarre and are going to show Frankenstein and the WolfMan this week. After school that Friday I go with my Dad to the hobby shop in the mall that we always go to and lo and behold Monogram has reissued the "Big 4" Universal monster kits! Dad says I can get 2 so of course it hs to be Franky and the WolfMan cause they are going to be on later tonight!Jusas with the Big G, sentimental vaalue overrules considerations of sculpt accuracy, which franlkly is not bad on this kit-it is a good likeness of Karloff from Bride.
3.The Wolf Man-see above story
4.King Kong-Like Godzilla, Kong was the only other original Aurora monster kit I had as a kid.
5.The Mummy-I love the sculpt and menacing pose of this kit.

Frankenstein has now moved out ahead of the Creature!

Frankenstein 31
Creature 28
Mummy 20
Phantom of the Opera 19
Dracula 17
Wolf Man 16
Bride of Frankenstein 15
Forgotten Prisoner of Castel-Maré 12
Godzilla 10

Wolf Man as well has made a strong upward move, but the Bride seems to be faltering.

I built the Mummy and the Bride kits as a kid. The Forgotten Prisoner was the only one my best buddy built. I now have his buildup, but my own are long since gone.

I agree though that the Forgotten Prisoner deserves more votes.

THE WITCH & THE BRIDE: I love the detail in both.
THE FORGOTTEN PRISONER: For the Famous Monsters tie in, & the fact that it's an original creation for the series. And what's not to like about a 'glow' skeleton?!

I've always liked the electric blue colour of her bandages on the box but for whatever reason few modellers paint them that way.

This was a difficult choice, especially with Aurora kits. But, I went
with the staple kits. The Creature, Frankenstein's monster, The Mummy
and Forgotten Prisoner. Really though, so many other really cool
kits.

Even though he's off model, I have to go with the Wolfman. He's my favorite Universal Monster, and the kit is a lot of fun. A novice model painter like myself can go off on the fur and get some nice results with low technical skills. I built one back in high school, and now me and my son are working on one.

The very first model kit (not just monster kit) I ever had was King Kong. My dad helped me build it as I was only 4. I loved that kit, and I remember bringing it for show-and-tell in kindergarten. The next one was Godzilla. I was a little older, maybe 6 or so. I painted it with Testors green enamel (a vibrant kelly green), and I painted it with red lips and blood on his hands as depicted in the wonderfully lurid James Bama boxart. I was (and still am) a fan of prehistoric animals and dinosaurs, so King Kong, Godzilla, and the Creature are my favorites. I see The Hunchback of Notre Dame isn't placing very high, but it made my list for the drama and pathos of the pose. Actually, it's very hard to chose just 5! They are all wonderful in their own way.

My favorite models from the past include:
The Forgotten Prisoner of Castle Mare (built 3 times, each time with extreme detailed painting)
The Creature from the Black Lagoon ('love the long nails and adding just the right amt of blood)
The Mummy (nice detail, fun to paint in extreme detail)
Frankenstein (my first model kit, my older brother made sure I spent a LOT of time building it)
The Phantom of the Opera (built at least twice, love the detail)
The Hunchback - molded in dark brown, lots of deep whip cuts on his back to paint red, quite a gruesome kit, indeed - strange that I built the model before seeing the movie...

I don't think it was strange.  You didn't have to have seen the movies to be taken with the Aurora monster model kits. The only one of the movies I had seen before I built any of the kits was the Hunchback of Notre Dame.

I picked 5 but ONLY 5 is difficult. For me, I picked some for sentimental value (Godzilla was my first one) and others because they are just so well done. I would have to say that for me my least favorite one was the Wolfman. Not that it is badly done but the likeness is so far off and he was my favorite monster.

But because the box art of the Aurora kit was so iconic, James Bama's Wolfman became for many of us the definitive Wolfman against which all others were measured. My problem with the Aurora Wolfman kit is that the sculpt isn't up to the quality of the box art.

First a high quality job by Jim Bertges that's everything a professionally built and painted kit should be:

i see them all as good sculpts, just some better or more evocative than the others. i bought some replacement heads for my next go round, so if they look good they will go on.

the yagher box cover kits are a mite pricy so i did opt to get some base customization kits where not too expensive. phantom, hyde, hunchback... will see if any others emerge...

all good pics above.

My favorite was Frankenstein, simply because it was the first one (sort of like remembering your first kiss, or is that as warped as a piece of glue-drenched plastic?)

Thank you kindly for posting this. It takes me back to my first kit. Indeed it's true it was the first monster kit for so many of us, and so it will always remain special. 'Makes me want to hunt it down all over again & add even more paint detail. cheers.

The fabulous James Bama box art that the Aurora monster model kits featured was one of the reasons behind their phenomenal success in the mid-sixties. Another was the great ads Aurora took out on the back covers of DC comics to zero in squarely on the target market:

October 1963

My favorite Aurora model would have to be The Bride of Frankenstein. I first saw an ad for the kit in an old back issue of Famous Monsters, its rarity and illusiveness gave it an almost mythical quality in my mind. Had it been released in the glow series and I had just never come across it? And while the kit isn’t without its flaws (it’s the wrong scale compared to the other models, the horizontal pose is a bear to display, and it’s so fragile that pieces seems to fall off by just looking at it); there is still something special about it that makes it unique among the lineup. For instance, it was the last Universal monster and the only female movie monster of the series, it was also most elaborate and had the best sculpting of the later models. All modesty aside, I really like the way my custom version turned out. I was lucky and got one of the rare Frightening Lightning variants, and while I couldn’t bear to paint over it, I did want to accent it in such a way that would bring out the details of the glow plastic. When it comes to painting models, I believe that less is more, so I did a simple rub off technique with metallic green paint. Next, I repositioned and angled the operating table and finally, for the finishing touch, I added gold chains to replace the regular plastic ones. Now Frankenstein’s Bride looks equally good in the daytime, at night, or under black light, as you can see below.

I agree with some of the other posts here that expressed disappointment with the wolfman sculpt compared to the Bama box art, which led me to build it up like this...(warning...this is my very first attempt at a buildup and I am no Yeager, but I hope to improve with time...)

The Bride of Frankenstein kit has been fabled in collectors' circles since the eighties anyway. I recall the exact words of a seller with whom I was negotiating a price some fifteen years ago "But this is the Bride man!"

Thanks. It really is a great model. I just wish that when Polar Lights re-released it they had brought it up to the full 1/8 scale, the way Spider-man and the Hulk were re-released a few years later.

For me, The Mummy always hit all the notes...balance, mood, astounding detail and almost perfect screen accuracy.

Dracula is almost tied for 1st on those points and might be 1st if the face was Lugosi.

Phantom isn't bad there either but is out of scale with the other 11 (he's slightly too big). And he's a little too "clean," but I probably get that from seeing Lom's shabby, rotting Phantom so many times as a kid.

Frank is the icon but the whole presentation is more like a monument to Frankenstein instead of a snapshot in plastic of the movie character. That's not a bad thing but it does make that kit less dynamic and more static for me (that's also why he makes a dandy gold-painted trophy).

The Wolf Man is a well-done werewolf but was never THE Wolf Man.

Jekyll...swing and a miss. Bigger scale and a little more going on in the lab might have helped.

Hunchback is well-done but never struck me as a horror character. He's too likable, esp. if you read the novel.

Creature is pretty well done too, but the head always ruined it for me and I was never a huge fan anyway.

Kong is ok. Godzilla...meh.

The Witch was a neat idea and I built a couple but...I dunno. Just never worked for me. Lots of stuff to look at, though.

Forgotten Prisoner captivated my imagination as a kid because I never saw one. Now seems a little "basic," somehow. Plain, almost. Boring? Not sure what word I'm looking for.

So yeah, The Mummy has it wrapped up tight.

Frank - best sculpted head of all
Creature -- fun kit to paint with white claw nails with bloody tips
Phantom - like how the mask fits perfectly and the prisoner scene
Prisoner - I've enjoyed building it and painting it super detailed at least 3 times

Completely agree about being disturbed by the prisoner.

I think that the Mummy was the best all around (great, movie-accurate Chaney Jr. sculpt). Frankenstein had a great head sculpt and is easily the most iconic. The Phantom was my personal favorite for the same reasons previously stated (that prisoner was freakin' creepy). The Bride was the most elaborate and sophisticated one. Dracula was cool and iconic (but I think I'm factoring in the great Bama box-art). The Creature was a bit of a letdown but fun. The Hunchback on the torture wheel had sentimental reasons (my dad taught me how to paint models with this one). The Hyde always looked lacking to me. Finally, the Wolfman was the worst on all levels (likeness, sculpt, execution, base etc.).

Since we're on the topic I have a big question regarding the order of the release of the models. I want to line mine up in the right order.

1964 first had Hunchback but what was the order of the rest? Kong, Godzilla, Hyde, and Guillotine. My current understanding is that Mr. Hyde came after King Kong and Godzilla, mainly because of this ad:
But often I see Hyde being listed as before
and I have no idea about the guillotine

Interesting that ad. Because of this ad run by Aurora itself, I had always thought that King Kong and Godzilla were the seventh and eighth additions to the Aurora monster model kit line:

That Captain Company(Warren) ad may simply be indicative of which kits Captain Company had in stock at the time as opposed to providing any kind of solid indication of which kits Aurora had issued to that time.

Hunchback definitely came before King Kong and Godzilla.
The two ads you posted above show the same artist drawing the first six. Perhaps he was told to draw one introducing King Kong and Godzilla and have the old ones in the background. But he never knew about the Hunchback model.
Here's a list of my current understanding of the order: http://www.universalmonsterarmy.com/forum/index.php?topic=28987.msg477305#msg477305 (http://www.universalmonsterarmy.com/forum/index.php?topic=28987.msg477305#msg477305)

I always heard the Bride and Witch were 1965. But I'll take your word for it on the monster rods. Wasn't Kong's Thronestar and Godzilla's Go Kart released later though. And the Go Karts box art was done by James Bama but the Prisoner wasn't. I believe Bama had quit by then. Oh and don't forget for your list that the Monsters of the Movies Dracula, Jekyll, and Hyde were just altered Canada only Monster Scenes figures. And they split the Jekyll and Hyde kit into two different kits for the Monsters of the Movies.

The box art for the Forgotten Prisoner was done by Mort Kunstler.

Here we have a hobby shop monster korner.
It has Big Frankie and the Guillotine being sold along side many models including Frankenstein's Flivver (which can be seen on the shelf with the other pre-built models). It's right in front of the Hunchback box. And several boxes for the Flivver and Dracula's Dragster can be seen below and even more Flivver boxes above. The place is crammed with them.
Of course Big Frankie and the Guillotine were only sold in 1964. Plus there are several things here pointing to the 1964 customizing contest. So CASE CLOSED
There's also a poster in the back advertising the new Jekyll as Hyde kit and it shows Hunchback, Kong and Godzilla in the background along with the other older models.

The Frankenstein kit rates higher to most people because it's the most iconic one, and sentimentality- it was first. Being first gets more credit in nearly everything. The kit looks great, as well, but some of the other kits top it for me. I consider Creature the #1 Aurora kit. But, I'm sure there's some sentimentality involved in my top choice as well since I nearly always favor CFTBL regarding UniMons.

Hard to nail down exactly why we like certain things more than others, and there are probably a plethora of reasons for it...not the least of which is what we had fun with as kids- what we experienced first.
