It's an actual molded sign from Collegeville that hung in a store. That makes it even more special to me.

I have a boxed version of that "mike myers" clown.  It is from the early 90s, maybe 1991?  I was surprised that it was that recent.  How old is the one on the display hanger?  Is there an older version of the same mask?  When was that design introduced?

Extremely cool!  I still have vivid memories of shopping for Halloween costumes in Houston when I was a kid and the year there were the GIANT head costumes. I'm pretty sure my brother got the Alfred E. Neuman one! I know there were Hanna-Barbera ones with oversized heads/masks and have saved images from eBay. On a Google search I only see the normal Halloween costume. Anyone else remember the 'big head' one (and not this Mardi Gras' one I see online...but a similar approach).

I need to somehow save the pictures so I can see them at a moment's notice- like smelling salts! curseofthewerewolf- I have never seen Flyman or Solar man!  Thanks for posting these!
I am soooo close to start searching around for a couple of these costumes to collect! The Gypsy costume is my personal favorite.

I definitely miss the days of going into KMART or Woolworth and my parents buying me those wonderful boxed costumes. Or should I say, Box 0' Funtastic.  The thought of owning something splendid from ones past, is exciting. Thank goodness as collectors WE, are able to do so.

Post by: curseofthewerewolf on September 24, 2011, 02:25:44 PM
I have saved some of my favorites on my PC (and CD-R's) that I'll probably never actually physically have.  I can't even remember any great store-bought costume I had. I know I had a Superman playsuit from the Sears catalog that I wore to a church Halloween costume contest. I added a Band-Aid to try and be clever.

I got as much pleasure checking them out at the store knowing I may not even get any as I got older.  We would recycle, go home-made or make our own weird combinations. Naturally I'd love to have loads of the old cool super-hero, monster and Beatles ones!!!!

I have saved some good sites, but one of the best went away.  I wish I had a better quality image of the FLYMAN one. I can't say I remember actually seeing Daredevil, Iron Man, Thor, Mr. Fantastic, etc. when they first came out. I'm sure I would have wanted a FLASH or GREEN LANTERN one if I had actually seen one.

I regret not buying just the GL costume itself a few years ago on eBay at a good price. No mask or box, but the costume was probably never worn.

Here's where the FLYMAN costume was:

http://www.retrocrush.com/archive2003/costumes/ (http://www.retrocrush.com/archive2003/costumes/)

This wasn't the best site for what 'we' would like...that one is a goner. I know the guy who ran it made a grand farewell of sorts and gave his reasons. He was not going to leave the images posted for some reason. It's a shame. I would always send people that link. Such a wonderful trip back in time. The stuff he showed would have made for a great book unlike the one that came out a few years ago that was very skimpy on actual Baby Boomer costumes.

And more images (w/some probably from the same place):

Boy, I'd love to have that "Phantom of the Opera" costume.  I see there was one listed on ebay in August 2010.  Oh well.

It looks like the mask is made from the same mold as this one:

Look at the hairline.  Same mold, different printing.

This jogs a very faint memory.  I think I recall a Huckleberry Hound over-the head mask -- early '60s.

Man, I LOVE that Jack-O-Lantern head with the top hat costume; that Trick-or-Treat image on the costume is beautiful. It embodies everything I love about Halloween. I love that glow-in-the-dark Skeleton too. These Collegeville and Ben Cooper cheap store bought costumes qualify as folk art if you ask me. They define a time and place in American culture that didn't exist before the 1950's and is gone today.

I only have one in my collection: a Collegeville Spooky Spooks Ghost!

Oh, btw!  I bought a  rare Metaluna Collegeville costume a year ago, without a mask.  Same situation as the Alien costume. I had the mask, then I found the costume and box on eBAY. But, the weird thing is, I had the complete Metaluna costume previous to that. Not knowing the rarity, I had traded the Metaulna(Collegeville) for something, I can not remember what I traded. Lol. I did regret it though.

Well Collegeville and Ben Cooper costumes are both of similar quality, they were both very popular, and sometimes you will see one having the same exact mask as the other with just a different paint job. Other Halloween costumes were made by Halco, and even Sears.

I love the ones that POP in a black light, it so reminds me of the eighties.

I used to admire the Halloween costume displays at the downtown Woolworth, Kresge, Zellers and Metropolitan stores in London, Ontario in the early sixties. I never aspired to get one though as I knew such a request would be a non-starter with my mother. I just bought a different mask at the corner variety store every year. To my current dismay I threw each and every one of those masks out sometime after Halloween (or my parents did). I can't even remember what any of the masks were specifically although I know they were all funny animals.

The sign was used in the late 60's through the early 80's. I bought it with some costumes on line.

How old is your oldest costume? Do you have any pre-1970 costumes?

when I saw Halloween 4 IN 1988 I Remember seeing these exact costumes in the school scene. Two cruel little boys were wearing the MASK costume and the Frankenstein costume, also this witch costume was featured in the same film but in a different scene. I have been looking for this Frank costume with the breaking chains for a long time. I finally found one.

Hi, I've posted the following picture before and I was wondering if it was a Collegeville Costume or a cheap knock-off.  It was from 1969- 1971 and it's a Polaroid, so it's rapidly fading. I just can't figure out if it's a gypsy or some kind of fortune teller/witch costume and it's been bugging me.  Anyway, I figure there's enough costume expertise around here to help me solve the mystery and look around for one someday. thanks..

The mask you have shown here is a witch mask from the early 70's originally it was a Halloween giveaway mask by Zest soap, but it was made by Ben Cooper masks, looks just  like the one in your picture. I own this exact mask. Great old photo by the way, I love it.

WOW!!!! That was fast!  Thank you sooo much! I have been looking around for the better part of a year, for that mask! I just couldn't get a clear description in my mind, and it made no sense to me!  I kept staring at the cape and mask as a pair, but now I realize it was a mix and match costume! So cool! And there was color film in the 70s, but my parents didn't buy any! hahaha!! My dad was an insurance investigator, and got free Polaroid b&w film from work. I am really happy to be in such great company here at the UMA! And I have looked at your Collegeville photos at least 8 times! What an outstanding collection you have, sandman  :)  Those costumes bring back  so many happy memories to me and many others here. Thanks again!

I am very happy I could answer your question. You had the now, very sought after Zest soap mask.  Also of you would like to own that little memory here is one for sale on ebay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAGE-WITCH-HALLOWEEN-MASK-/260864612642?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cbcbe1922 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAGE-WITCH-HALLOWEEN-MASK-/260864612642?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cbcbe1922)
I haven't seen one for sell in a while, they are kind of rare since they were a soap giveaway mask, not a lot were made for Zest. It glows really bright in a black light.

Wow! Great pic! Is that you?

Yeah, it's me  :)   I grew up in Michigan and I'm glad my dad made every childhood photo look chilling with Polaroid b&w instant camera film! hahahahaha!! I can still smell that weird sponge thing that you rubbed across the photo, which I guess was some sort of preservative.....or finishing chemical??  Anyway, I am thrilled that the costume was identified before the picture faded away. I have several pics of myself that have already faded.....and each time one fades out, I look at my hands to make sure I'm still here  :)
My husband, who has zero interest in my Halloween costume obsession, was surprised when I read this whole thread to him and delighted when I showed him sandman's collection!! He says he doesn't remember seeing these costumes when he was a kid, he was born in the 50s- but I think he just has a weak memory. Probably because I've filled his mind with my gibberish for the last 32 years!

I was born in the 60's and I vividly remember almost all of them, especially the various  Frankenstein, Devil , and skull masks which were my favorite as a child.

The reason you so vividly remember them now is because you must clearly have been enchanted by them when you were a kid. And that's why you collect them now.

I had a tiger costume that came from Woolworth's sometime around 1959, 1960 or 1961. I remember wearing to school for a Halloween party and again in our class play but don't remember the year or if it came with a mask. It might've been Collegeville or Ben Cooper or some other manufacturer ..

I am fuzzy about the details of the costume and even the year that it was purchased .. I do remember that my one line in the class play was "No hunting in the nursery at night?"

I now usually celebrate Halloween as a hippie ..  ;D

Loyalist?  LOL that's actually funny. No I like both Collegevile and Ben Cooper, if you read what the FB page says it states for everyone who collects Collegeville and Ben Cooper costumes, actually the site is for anyone who collects these type costumes. Why in the world would you think I am a enemy of Ben Cooper? I don't recall EVER saying or even hinting that I am.  As far as the facebook organization you're asking about...I don't really know what you're asking about. It's just a fan page. LOL

It really is true that the little things in life, like plastic Halloween masks, can make you feel so very happy! I am so full of joy tonight because I checked my email, and saw that I was the only bidder on the sweeeeet witch mask that sandman hooked me up with!  :) The auction turned out wonderful- $9.99 for  sheer delight! Thanks sandman- I will be wearing the witch mask- with a much larger rubberband- in a week or so. This is officially the first thing from my childhood that I've ever chased after, and I'm so glad I did.  I can't wait to display it along side my faded Polaroid   {^...^}

Copy-and-paste and replace the deleted AT symbol for the (*at*) where they removed it on each---for whatever reason. You know, the 'AT' symbol with the 'a' inside a circle we use on email addresses. Is there some way to post it without it automatically altering it?

I see the forum thingy altered the (*at*) symbol.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/93779577 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/93779577)(*at*)N00/sets/72157616202184878/?page=3

It needs to have the "(*at*)" symbol in the middle or it won't work. I guess it won't let you post emails or something on here? It won't even let you post that symbol.
It also called the apetail, monkey tail, atmark, at symbol, or commercial at. Copy-and-paste and delete the (*at*) and replace it with the symbol.

The MR. FANTASTIC is a variation from the only other one I have saved from eBay or online (Silver on mask, leg artwork instead of plain). Looks like they just used the same art below the waist on all three of these costumes. Click on the auction links to see multiple photos.

I definitely miss the days of going into KMART or Woolworth and my parents buying me those wonderful boxed costumes. Or should I say, Box 0' Funtastic.  The thought of owning something splendid from ones past, is exciting. Thank goodness as collectors WE, are able to do so.

Woolworth and Grants are where we used to go. Does anyone still have any of the costumes they wore as a child? Mine were tossed out eons ago unfortunately.

The Phils also had a giveaway for a Larry Anderson mask.

Does anyone remember the Philadelphia Phillies wearing uniforms with that burgundy colour as opposed to red? Back in the eighties the colour they were wearing looked burgundy to me on TV but I've never seen a Phillies jersey with burgundy trim. The ones I've seen have always had red trim.

Yes they debuted those in 79 for Saturday home games. Thankfully they got rid of them the same year. I believe when they had the celebration for Vet stadium Larry Christenson came out wearing one. :)

I'm not. It's like a secret society of Collegeville, Ben Cooper and Halco enthusiast. A few of my closet friends
collect these boxed gems. Amazingly, there are a few videos and fans on Youtube that discuss these costumes 0'

The uniform you've pictured looks red though. I'm talking about the traditional Phillies white uniform but with pinstripes that are a maroon rather than straight red colour.

I was going to go on ebay and look for a Batman Ben Cooper costume but then I realized it probably would be smart to wait until after Halloween.

Then again they probably fetch a decent price at any time of the year.

I have a bunch of the following pics over in the Weekly Finds thread but they fit right in here as well.
Many of these I have picked up in the last month or so. A couple were in beater boxes but still sealed and unused. Both Collegeville and Ben Cooper. These pics are pretty big so you'll have to scroll right to see the whole pic of the masks.

This one was still sealed in the bag for over 30 years so it is pretty wrinkled.

I've been looking on ebay for one to add to my collection but I haven't had any luck. If someone recognizes the manufacturer, it would help narrow my search.

The hangers are vintage. They were sold either in the box with the cellophane window or on the rack in hangers. Boxes were by far more common. Ben Cooper went bankrupt and was sold to Rubies costumes. Halco is still around although they don't do Halloween anymore, at least I don't think they do, falling back on their Santa Claus suits. Collegeville is also out of business. I think it was sold to Paper Magic Group part of CSS Industries that also bought out Don Post Studios, Topstone/NUskin masks, and Illusive Concepts masks.

I have never heard of crepe costumes in Ben Cooper, Collegeville, and Halco only in vintage 1920s era Halloween Costumes with cloth masks. If it was crepe it may have been far older than 1976. By the 60s, 70s, and 80s, costumes were either flannel with vacuform mask or rayon with vinyl and vacuform mask. I have never seen that one but will keep my eye out for it.

Here's an example of a  'big head' Alfred E. Neuman costume I had memories of from earlier in the thread. I could find no pics back then. Don't remember the little cap on him, but it is indeed a BIG HEAD Alfred E. costume. It is also calling it a Mardi Gras costume. Maybe there was a normal version, too. I KNEW I remembered one.

It's an actual molded sign from Collegeville that hung in a store. That makes it even more special to me.

What year(s) would that sign have been in use? How did you find it anyway?

Would you say that Collegeville costumes were of better construction than Ben Cooper ones? Which company's box art graphics were better?

Here's an example of a  'big head' Alfred E. Neuman costume I had memories of from earlier in the thread. I could find no pics back then. Don't remember the little cap on him, but it is indeed a BIG HEAD Alfred E. costume. It is also calling it a Mardi Gras costume. Maybe there was a normal version, too. I KNEW I remembered one.

Yes, AEN came in both a standard and a 'Mardi Gras' sized costume. A friend of mine found a ton of NOS standard sized Alfred masks about 20 years ago, along with Col. Sanders, Red Skelton, and a few others.

I should have worded it better. I know there was a 'normal' MAD costume & mask.  I meant a BIG HEAD costume that looked like the 'plain' Alfred head with no green cap. That example does look very Mardi Gras or even Christmas-y. I don't remember that aspect (the green stocking cap), but that was a LOOOOONNNNNNGGG time ago. When I saw this photo I was glad to see there indeed had been a 'big head' version, but not like it had been in my mind. It was certainly Halloween costume sales time.

I bid you good luck in your search for the Trick Or Treat costume aka Jack O lantern head mask. They are one of the hardest to find and they fetch a nice chunk of change. I will never sell mine. I have been looking for another one for 5 years. There is also a version that does not have a day glo paint job on the mask. I have been told the day glo ones are the rarest.

Very nice costumes everyone. I have a chance to buy a Phantom of the Opera costume, mask and box. I haven't seen it yet but he says its in really nice condition. He is asking $100. Any thoughts? Thanks UMA! BTW, I picked up a few very nice Devil masks that were Zest giveaways. They are up for trade if anyone is interested. Thanks again!

Just the mask alone fetches abut 50-60 if it is day-glo and around 20-30 if it is not. An entire costume with the original box is pretty rare.

It depends on if it is the 70's costume which is vinyl or the 60's which is cloth. The one from the 60's I'd say yes from the 70's no. There's a guy on ebay that has been trying to get a C note for his Frankenstein from the 70's but he hasn't had any takers on it. They should fetch around 50-70 if it's in primo condition.

Did Collegeville change from cloth to vinyl costumes in a certain year? Did Collegeville change all its costumes to vinyl in that year or were costumes that were previously made of cloth continue to be made out of cloth? Did Ben Cooper make the same switch in the same year?

Here's a Collegeville costume devoted to my favourite Harvey character:

I'm pretty sure THIS is the (GHOST ) character my Mom purchased for me, when I was a little Monster kid. This mask has furrowed eyebrows.

Cool! Very few of us here have wives/girlfriends who haunt graveyards at night.

This Collegeville Spooky Spooks Vampire costume is sometimes mistaken for a Michael Jackson costume:

Come on though! What kind of parent would let his child even pretend to be Michael Jackson?

It must have taken many years and lots of cashola $$ to have mint on hanger pieces. WOW! Ya just don't see them anymore. Some collectors are paying decent $ just for a mask with a broken rubberband. I have restrung about a dozen of mine, easy to do and costs about 25 cents and 3 mins of time.

I do to.

Or, at least extend it to 2 or 3 days so we could repost pics with faded hot-links. Sometimes we can't get on here early enough the next day to post another pic if one has faded. It would help a little with the recurring problem of missing pics.
