You are NOT kidding....What burns me is the ones who do it as a business on Ebay.  Ebay USED to be a place for collectors but not now.  Now these guys come in and buy huge lots of stuff and then turn around and sell it for twice as much and double the shipping charges so they make even more money.  I hate ebay.

What you say is too true. Obviously these people haven't sat down with a financial planner. If they had, they'd realize that there are much more effective ways to make money than to screw around nickle and diming with toys. Not only that, but speculating literally keeps these toys out of the hands of the people who truly desire them. Just my two cents. Spend them wisely. ;)

Welcome webelongdead. "We Belong Dead" just happens to be my all time favorite monster movie sound bite. I'm a bit envious that it's your ID.

Anyways WBD, I would point out to you that one source of monster merchandise is our Classifieds Board here at UMA. But like any other web site, you must use discretion with whom your choosing to do business with. So far there have been no reports of deception or fraud at our board. At least none that I'm aware of anyways. It's always going to be "buyer beware" no matter where you shop.

If you haven't already, go do some window shopping over at our Classifieds Board. You never know what your gonna find - http://www.universalmonsterarmy.com/forum/index.php?www;board=5

You might also put up a "wants list" in the classifieds. Maybe somebody will have something, or know where you can find one.

What problems exactly are you having on eBay?  I buy on eBay all the time and very rarely feel like I "got the big bone".  Unless I buy a skeleton of some sort, that is...

I would have to agree. I've made many, many purchases and in the rare instances (maybe two in the last ten years?) that the seller makes a mistake they have always put it right.

One time I won an auction for the book And the Darkness Falls, an anthology of horror stories hand picked by Boris Karloff. I had been looking for this for years, with a dust jacket, and won it at a decent price. What I received was an anthology of Ellery Queen mysteries!! I immediately emailed the seller, he apologized, told me to keep the Queen book, and sent me the Karloff book. The Karloff book was in darn near mint condition!! I was amazed that I got it for what I did.

While everything has its faults, I for one enjoy the crap out of ebay. Yes, there are some crooked sellers out there with inflated shipping charges and lousy feedback, but you DON'T have to buy from them. Among other items, i've amassed an incredible collection of Wolfman and Frankenstein Monster Nik trolls [see Frankenstein Troll Heaven thread] that i simply NEVER would have happened upon without ebay. Sometimes for a steal! [sometimes not] I've also taken advantage of the classified ads here on the UMA site and have NEVER been disappointed. We're all kindred spirits here.

I need intervention to pull me away from ebay.

Amen!  Preach on!!  If I'm not watching 40 or so items and bidding on 5 or more items then I'm lost!!  I've only been a heavy Ebayer since I started selling my unwanted toys from childhood back in February but I've yet to have a bad sale or buy......Jinx, jinx!!  Actually I did win a Hasbro Creature for my daughter back on April 8th and I've yet to receive it!  Still hoping the seller comes thru, they have good seller feedback but they've yet to answer any of my e-mails.

As far as buying and reselling at overpriced rates-I've won several lots but only needed 1 or 2 items in that lot.  I turn around and re-list the doubles that I've acquired but at reasonable prices because I'm not out to make back what I spent on the lot and I don't want to keep an unwanted item when someone else can win it for their collection.  Also if an item is worth something (and sometimes even if it isn't) usually the winning bid will reflect that no matter how low the starting bid is.  Then again, Ebay is like going to a casino, sometimes you win, sometimes you loose.  One week an item will go for an exorbitant rate (Good for the seller.) then another week it'll go for pennies on the dollar (Obviously a win for the buyer.).

I probably overpaid (Actually I know I did!) for my Remco 3 3/4 Dracula but I wanted one to complete my set and Ebay idiots were bidding on them higher than you could just buy it now?!!?  So I bought it now.  Anyone see the posting over at the Classic Horror Film Board where someone bid $42.00 for an issue of Famous Monsters 246 that you could just get from FM for over half that!??!  Bidding like that does not help regulate pricing on Ebay.  Sometimes I don't mind overpaying for something I want since I don't plan on reselling anything.  By the time I die and my kids have to resell everything I'm sure the price I paid won't matter.

It seems that, more and more, you either "overpay" on ebay or don't bother bidding.  There are still some good deals now and then.  But on a lot of stuff, people will just bid whatever it takes to get the piece, even on run-of-the-mill items.  I guess money is no object for some people.  Sadly, I don't think most of us are in that group.

This is the time of year when eBay prices are their highest for most items...  from after Xmas through about the beginning of April.  This year the "economic stimulus" checks are going out so over the next 2 weeks prices are going to be higher than ever.  If you wait until Summer, that's the best time to buy, by far.  eBay sales are always slowest in Summer, sellers get in a pinch, and things are available much cheaper.  Smart collectors will save their money from now until the middle of June and hunt hard on eBay from then until the middle of September.

A few quick examples-

I was trying to win a set of the first Jack in the Box monsters, since I passed on them originally, a couple of days ago.  They ended up going for around $28.00 (Including shipping, I always including shipping when I consider bidding!).  I had quit bidding on them since another set was listed just a few days before the first ended and I ended up winning them for $15.95, which was the opening bid of $9.95+shipping cost.

I also recently picked up an Aurora Frankenstein for $17.84 (Again that includes shipping.) well under what I've seen them go for lately.

Finally with some luck I happened to find a loose but mint Wolfman Pozer that a seller had just listed for a buy it now of $13.00+$9.50 so I jumped on it since I never picked one up when they came out.  Currently there is a Wolfman Pozer with 4 days to go selling for $21.50 and usually I've seen these go in the 40's!

Ebay it's like a roller coaster ride of joy and frustration!

I've gotten some fantastic deals on 60s monster toys in just the last 30 days.  By the time I pay it all off, the interest might erode some of my "savings," but I think I'll still come out ahead.  I might sell a couple things in May to help pay for these purchases. It's been at least a year, maybe two years since I sold anything on ebay, or sold anything, period.  I agree with Bobby that the stimulus checks are going to create a seller-friendly market on ebay for a few weeks.  Good time to sell, bad time to buy.

I've got to save my money for September/October when all the Topstones, Telcos, Gurley candles, Oh Lantern pumpkins and Imagineering makeup hits ebay.  That's my busy buying season.

Don't forget the soon-to-be on Ebay official MAGE toy releases of "The WolfMan in: House of Frankenstein", and "I was a Teenage  Frankenstein," and finally "Boris Karloff in The Raven" All are 8" Mego style figures. All sales will go to directly benefit the UMA toy tour. All will be on Ebay in the next couple of weeks. Keep watching! How could you pass them up, Raymond?

No. There are only three. They are custom made figures that I am selling as a fundraising maneuver for the UMA. They will go on Ebay. I make custom 8" style Mego monster figures. There are pics floating around on the internet. If you go back in the pages of this message forum you will see pics of a custom Coffin Joe I did, and a custom Aurora James Bama Wolfman.

Once these three are gone, that will be it. My previous post was made tongue firmly in cheek.

Best,

Matt Jaycox

I can say that it is unusual for Matt to sell any of his creations.  They are true works of art, with great attention to detail that only a true monster affecionado could create.  I have seen the three figures that will eventually be going up for auction, and they are amazing.  The winners of those figures will be very pleased.

Matt's work is the best.  They are not "fake toys."  They are pop art, worth owning for their own sake.  Coffin Joe himself was very impressed with Matt's interpretation of him:

It's easy to see why. Matt's Coffin Joe is a superb piece of work.

Say, Raymond, why don't you bring this little guy to Wonderfest with you? I would really like to get a better look at him. In fact, I'll even be so kind as to watch him for you while you're off manning the display. Isn't that generous of me? ;)

I love that you can get anything you want on e-Bay but e-Bay does Not care if you get screwed.  They claim they are just a platform. They have rules that only insure money gets in their hands and the other rules are just fluff and not enforced.  It's a cool place when you find people you can trust . PayPal has screwed me really bad twice and I doubt I use them anymore. They are an e-bay company that is more like a Cold robot and cares less about you than their Mother company. I'm on e-Bay every day though..their the biggest. I wish someone better will get the market with humans involved...well honest, caring humans, Just ma pinoin. ShadowmanN
