So which was the more fabulous toy, the Great Garloo by Marx or King Zor by Ideal?

Who had one or the other? Did anyone have both? Who has them now?
:-\
I had them both back in 1968 they were hand me downs from my neighbor. Then my stupid older brothers dropped a refrigerator on Garloo and all that survived was his head. And King Zor was taken away from me because I only had marbles to shoot out of him and I broke a few windows. Ahhh Good times! :)
I have Garloo. I got him for Christmas back in '62 and let me just say he was and is AWESOME! What toy commercial can come close to this?
Great Garloo commercial ( Marx 1961 ) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I0p0WRhAp9o#)
Okay...maybe this one.
Robot Commando commercial ( Ideal 1961 ) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_awi5nS7w8Y#)
Rickh, Thanks so much for the great tv commercials! I've never seen the Garloo one! Love where he dumps the train trestle! Zor or Garloo? That's a tuff one. See you added Robot Commando to the discussion.......Here's my Christmas '62 letter and envelope to Santa that was found in my Mom's things after she passed away. Mom was great at listening to what we wanted for Christmas. Also, Hepcat, I have to add that you are leaving out the true King of early 60's plastic in the face-off, in my humble toy-lovin' opinion......Naw, I'll let you guess.......Bud

Man, I love that letter. The address with the reindeer is priceless! You wouldn't be talking about Big Lou would you??
Awesome letter Bud!! But who the heck is "Stanta"?? :D
LOL.....Yea I caught that too. I don't really remember what Kansas City 14 Mo. means either. As for the spelling.....I'm just lucky we have spell-checker for posts here on the UMA....Bud
Man those commercials are great. The letter is priceless ;) Stanta Claus :P
Alright you guys.....I was mighty little......then. 240 and 6'7" now. So stop making fun of Stanta!
Rickh, you got it....But it's Big LoO. I believe it was Toy Shop Magazine that pronounced the big 5 of the early plastic greats.....Big Loo (King), Robot Commando, King Zor, The Great Garloo and I believe #5 was Odd Ogg. All the best gifts any kid ever got for whatever occasion! Bud
The Gang (of 5) thought this post would be the perfect opportunity to get dusted off and out of the basement. We caught a break as the wife was upstairs at the time and saw none of this photo session.......she isn't for the toys breaking out of the basement except if I'm selling em...which I ain't! Don't know if you can tell, Odd Ogg is chewing on my startled rubber King Kong....I love to torture that critter (check my avatar)! Bud

AWESOME! Love the 5
Thanks Toys of Terror, you have some mighty awesome collectables too! You've got me with one eye on the E-bay in hopes of a Pressman Shrunken head kit. I did some searching and found several Pressman Detestable Edible kits from the 60's. Alittle like the Mattel Incredible Edibles, but not quite so cool.....someone must have found a stash of those Pressman Detestables somewhere.....Bud

Smashed to pieces by a piddly refrigerator?! I guess the Great Garloo wasn't so tough after all then. I would have thought it would have taken a whole skyscraper to bring him down.

Sadly I don't own either item - yet.
I can, however, show you lots. I'll take some pictures of my collectibles room and my three model, game and toy cabinets over the next couple of weeks and post them on this board. Here though is a teaser of my main model cabinet that I had taken last May. I've made some additions/improvements since.

Yes, the kit under the Steve Canyon is a Jesse James.
I'll post better pics of this and my other cabinets within a couple of weeks. Not having opposable thumbs, it takes me a while to get such things done since I have to enlist the aid of The MAN.

WOW-magnificent collection of vintage boxed kits Hepcat!! Do you plan to build them someday? I love those awesome 60's monsters-Garloo, King Zor and the rest. They were before my time. When I was a kid in the late 70's the monster toys to have were the Shogun Warriors robots and the Godzilla and Rodan that went with them, and the Remco monsters.

No, no, absolutely not! The originals are collectors' items! Reissues/repros of almost all of these kits are widely available though and I do plan to build many of these some day. I'll paint them the same gaudy way I would have painted them when I was eleven years old though. For example, the Mummy will be turquoise as he is on the box while I think the Creature will look good a metallic green with a neon yellow belly.

You can't expect him to keep focus when his cranium (and whatever is contained within) is the size of a walnut.
It is hard to stay focused with such a tiny cranium! My thoughts keep drifting to finding other monsters to terrorize and maim or finding huge boulders to heave at pesky red and silver giant sized alien superheroes that always show up and ruin my fun.

QuoteMagnificent collection of vintage boxed kits Hepcat!! Do you plan to build them someday?
Had some collector friends over to my basement toy dungeon and had passed some G I Joe stuff around for them to see......out of the corner of my eye I catch my big (somewhat dumb) buddy Dave starting to fingernail the original cello wrap on a G I Jap figure! Asked him what the heck he though he was doing......"Oh, I just thought I could see it better out of the box". OUCH! There are toys you play with...there are models you build.......but at some point those items step over into the realm of valuable collectible and you no longer play or build........ RedKing, you got a very small brain, so no slappin' this time, but what you see in Hepcat's photos is a shrine not a sandbox.....Read it, learn it, live it. Know this, I am holding a walnut nutcracker in my hand, so be good..........Love, Buddy
Hepcat.....please identify.......immediately below Aurora Graf Spee......Bismark? Also 2nd kit up from Graf Spee? Another ship I think......Bud
The kit immediately below the Graf Spee is an earlier issue of the Graf Spee! Both had excellent box art so I bought them both. The kit two above the upper graf Spee is an Avro CF-100.
I have an Aurora Bismarck but it's over 14" long and thus too long to be stored in this cabinet with most of my best kits. My Bismarck is with three other Aurora kits, a German Wolfpack U-Boat, a P-61 Black Widow and a Jerry West, in the same room but in the other curio cabinet that holds my board games, lunch boxes, Kenner Presto & Sparkle Paint Sets, Hasbro Marble Mazes and other miscellaneous toys and models.
8)
And you know we are looking to see those other cabinets! That Aurora U-boat has great box art doesn't it? I really like the other ship box art that is in the same fashion as the Graf Spee.....Bismark, Yamato etc. Box art is the big thing for me......I've picked up on several Lindbergs in the last few years as my admiration of their box art has increased.....and the Pre-S Revells....and the early Airfix box art.....so much good stuff and never enough money.....Bud

Yes, the German Wolf Pack U-Boat does indeed have great box art. So good in fact that I believe that it was the first Aurora military model kit that I sprung for as a kid. I built close to a dozen Aurora and Hawk ships and planes after that and had them nicely displayed on a little curio table in my bedroom when disaster struck. My big sister came along and vacuum cleaned them. Up went some of the little pieces of course. That broke my heart and I built no more.
I'll be taking better pictures of my model and toy cabinets and their contents over the next couple of weeks. To tide you over until then, here are a couple of pics from early last summer of the other cabinet in my collectibles room where my Aurora Bismarck resides:

Great stuff! Truly cabinets full of wonders. Love to see more (and more close ups) as time permits. Thanks for posting.
Hep, I really appreciate those Kenner Sparkle sets! Very nice! In the 1st cabinet you have Revell 1/24 Racing Bodys.....can't make out which ones....I have the Lotus 23 and Porsche RS-60. Bud
Wow Hep, your wonders never cease!! I have to say, I don't know if I could resist not building some of those vintage kits. I know they are valuable collector's items, but I have never been one to leave my stuff mint in box, I like to be able to handle the kit or figure and see it from all angles. Of course that is just my personal preferance, i totally understand keeping things mint in box!I also agree with you on the box art-for me, a big part of what makes the old kits great is the fantastic box art they had. I have repros of several kit box art on my walls in fact. I also LOVE your lunch box collection! I had that great Universal Monsters lunch box when i was in 5th grade which was right around the time I expanded my interests from giant monsters (Godzilla and Harryhausen) and dinosaurs to include the classic movie monsters as well.
Quote from: BigbudIn the 1st cabinet you have Revell 1/24 Racing Bodys.....can't make out which ones....I have the Lotus 23 and Porsche RS-60.
They're not just bodies. The top shelf consists entirely of M.i.B. slot cars. In fact they're still sealed! From the top the Revell ones are a 1/32 scale Ferrari 250 GTO , a 1/32 scale Lotus 23, a 1/24 scale Ferrari 250 GTO and a 1/24 scale Corvette Stingray.
Quote from: RedKingI also LOVE your lunch box collection! I had that great Universal Monsters lunch box when i was in 5th grade which was right around the time I expanded my interests from giant monsters (Godzilla and Harryhausen) and dinosaurs to include the classic movie monsters as well.
Cool! I never had a need for a lunchbox since after the first ten weeks or so of grade one we moved to a house that was only two blocks away from my school so that I was able to go home for lunch.
I wasn't exclusively a monster guy either. I had a whole smorgasbord of interests. The Topps " You'll Die Laughing" cards and the Leaf "Spook Stories" were what initially opened my eyes to monsters but it was the Aurora monster models that really sealed the deal. I therefore pulled out all stops to get my hands on a Creature/Wolfman monster wallet when they were offered up as a prize in a newspaper selling drive in my town.

Yea, we didn't really stick to the King Zor vs Great Garloo question..........I'll go with King Zor for an odd reason......I love his original box.....too cool........and so big ............Buddy

Oh, that sounds like a swell idea, Buddy! Great seeing your Dandy with sombrero variant, and with all the acoutrements. He even has his tail! My Dandy is just the regular version...without the box, whip and tail.... so, yeah...I'm not club worthy. :( But he does work. He was one of my earliest childhood toys. Haunted! How can the founder and only official member of the Dandy the Lion Club be thrown out!? You guys are driving me crazy! I've gotta get some pics up of my old hearse......'61 Olds hearse. Love your avatar.............. Buddy
Wae your 61 Olds hearse produced by "Comet" coach works? My understanding was that Ford bought the name "Comet" for it's new economy car abouut the time your hearse was produced, and the company renamed it's self "Cotner-Bevington".
Not sure about all that, Hearse.......you sure threw me with that Cortner-whatever......my last name is Bortner.........Buddy
GM never built a funeral Coach that I'm aware of. Typically, a builder would get a chassis (From GM, and prior to 1955 also Packard) and build the Coach on that. My 1959 is a Cadillac, but the hearse body was built by "S&S". The Ghostbusters Ecto-1 was a miller Meteor, and Harold's 1959 was a "Superior". Sometimes builders would stretch out a chassis, like National. It would be interesting to know who did the conversion on your 1961 Oldsmobile.
I'd kill to get my hands on that Jag-hearse from "Harold And Maude". That thing is off the chain!!
Hearse, I'll get a pic up......pretty sure it was a production model.....and def. was an Olds. Scatter! That jag alone got me to watch Harold and Maude several times. Buddy

A few days ago, a KING ZOR in the box still working with all the parts was up on EBay for Buy it Now of $1395 or make an offer! Only problem was its feet had cracks in them. I was sorely tempted but couldn`t afford it. Now it is gone, someone snapped it up. Sigh...
I think the seller had it up for sale six months to a year ago at a substantially higher price but got no bites.
:-[
I had a King Zor until about a week ago. It was in a storeroom in my parent`s house back in Iowa. However, my dad had used the house for collateral when my mother went into a nursing home. Now the state stepped in and made my brother sell the house to pay as much of the nursing home bill as possible. Unfortuanately, my sister didn`t tell me about it until all the dust had settled. The house is gone & all the stuff in it was sold at auction. Now I see a King Zor up on EBay for $200 with the seller in Ohio. I`m really convinced that is my King Zor. Not a stretch that a seller travels around neighboring states collecting items for resale. Anyway, I`d been thinking for over a year asking my sister to send me KZ and I kept forgetting to contact her. Oh, well, I still have the great memory of my 2 older brothers carrying that big box into the living room for me on Christmas Eve 1963.
Oh that is just horrible.

Wow! Great pic!
Great Garloo should be at least a head taller than King Zor though to offset the weight disadvantage Garloo would have given Zor's length.
:)
Thanks, Hep & good point! I'll have to adjust the height. When I did this, I drew ZOR as an actual dragon/dinosaur. Is he supposed to be a mechanical, robotic monster or a living, breathing beast? I'd like to write up a script and turn it into a mini-series comic book, just for UMA'ers. Any ideas on "origins" of these two giant monstrosities?
I believe King Zor is a cyborg.

I did have The Great Garloo and King Zor. I also had Hamilton's horribles (I think that's right). I was 8 when I received Great Garloo for Christmas and the Bedrock playset. Oh how Garloo would terrorize the Flintstones. 2 years ago I bought a re-release of Gigantic Frankenstien. I had been looking for 1 for a while, an original or the re-release. I had Big Loo also. I'd love to find a Great Garloo, I've already found another Bedrock playset. Dave

Mark, that is AWESOME!
Thanks Mike :) - I was planning on doing a comic book just for the UMA'ers, with Zor as the monster cyborg he really is. Got a little sidelined, though ::)...
That sounds like a great idea if you get around to it. i know I'd love to see it! I saw both the old TV commercials for Garloo nd Zor on the big screen a couple years ago during Godzilla Kaiju battle at a local theater. They showed a double feature of Godzilla vs Hedorah and Godzilla Final Wars and in between features ran a ton of trailers and commercials-including these two iconic monster toys! It was put on by a local group called It Came From Schenectady. They put on several film shows a year and are doing another Godzilla night in march-I can't wait!!
Wow! It Came from Schenectady puts on great shows!

They really do. They had a Troma fest last week with Lloyd Kaufman appearing, but not really my cup of tea. Every October they have a 24 hour film fest with a huge variety of movies.

Bud
