Title: Weird-Ohs Items!
Post by: Hepcat on January 07, 2011, 11:17:50 AM
The success of the Hawk Weird-Ohs line of model kits spawned many other items. I'm aware of these:

1. A Marx Nutty Mad series of statues.

2. Two Leaf card sets, Weird-Ohs and Baseball Weird-Ohs.

3.  A series of six decals individually wrapped in cellophane.

4. Ideal Weird-Ohs board game.

6. A binder.

7. A Weird-Ohs/Silly Surfers record album.

(http://lpcoverlover.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/10.resized/267464479_8cb9736e7a-1.jpg) (http://lpcoverlover.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/10.resized/cvr_silly.jpg)

8. A Weird-Ohs store display mobile.

But what have I missed? Were there not magic slates, puzzles and other Weird-Ohs toys? How about store display posters?

I don't know much about these items, cool as they are, but please tell me you like...
The Ventures, Dick Dale, Horten Heat, and of course the Stray Cats ;)

I believe that there are masks, and there's definitely a helmet. And Dick Smith's monster makeup book sold through FM has instructions to make yourself up as a Weird-Oh--it even made the cover.

I think I saw a bagatelle game (a pinball-type thing using marbles) on eBay a while back.

And about 10 years ago, there was some weird-oh merchandise put out to coincide with a CGI tv series, but it never really caught on. (I think Taco Bell or another second tier fast food did a tie-in).

My brothers and I had small (approx. (9x12x3) vinyl brief cases with Weird-Ohs colorfully printed on the top.  I remember a yellow one, a red one, and possibly a black one.  They were cool as hell.

There's a Weird-oh's ring binder shown in the "Wallets" thread of the "Monster Toys" category.

Nicely put, Terry. Myself, being a musician who plays and digs surf, rockabilly, psychobilly, punk, thrash and metal,
one doesn't have to like or love surf music to appreciate the Weird-Ohs. Weird-ohs kick butt. ;)

Hey Gasport, I hadn't really given it much thought. The cool stuff that jump-started the 60's monster stuff, in my memory, were the Aurora monster kits, the Rat Fink Roth kits, the Weird-oh models and figures, and the Nutty Mads, also the lesser known MPC Uglies...................Not exactly sure what the order of appearance was......Bud

Oh, absolutely Bud! As far as monster craze items go, all roads lead back to the Aurora factory...I was just trying to hone in specifically on the monster hot rod phase of the chain. I remember it all beginning with Rat Fink.

I have all 66 of the Weird-oh Baseball cards (color photocopies of the backs, too) framed and on the wall of my man-cave.  I had some of them as a kid but finally grabbed them all off of EBAY in assorted lots.  I also created my own figure  (my own design, #13, Screwball)

Thanks! I used  MagicSculp http://www.magicsculp.com/ (http://www.magicsculp.com/)  It is much more durable than Sculpey, although I have developed a hideous allergic reaction to the stuff...sigh.

Free advice: wear gloves, work in a ventialted area.   Build up an armature with coat-hanger wire and tin foil.  Apply masking tape on that.  Secure to a mounting block of wood. Work in small batches as the Magiscsulp will adhere to itself.  You have about an hour once it has been blended together. Use Krylon plastic adhesive paint as an undercoat.  Paint with acylics.  Finish with Krylon Clear Matte Finish Plastic Adhesive paint.  Here ended the lesson! :)  Good luck!

Glad to see there are some rockabilly, surf, and rock n' roll fans on here. ;) Its so funny, these items just scream rockabilly and surf to me when I see them  Awesome!

it's very much the car culture, big daddy ed roth style  and i think that has become synonymous with rockabilly, psychobilly, and horror punk,  the same can be said for classic horror in general after all you can look at any psychobilly band and see a Frankenstein or the bride on their shirts and album covers. i listen to psychobilly and punk music and i think one of my prized possessions is this misfits shirt with the wolfman on it.

I love ed roth's work and always get this warm little feeling when i look at this kind of art, i consider myself a low brow artist as well and have a tattoo of a little wolfman surfing along with  one of my dad's cartoon characters, my dad was totally into the car/surf culture of the sixties and his work is definitely inspired by this kind of fink and weirdo art.  i just love this stuff

You are correct. The Weird-Ohs were Hawk's response to the Revell's "Big Daddy" Roth line of fink kits.

I think Big Daddy and Stanley Mouse both started doing the "monster in a hotrod" thing about the same time (and possibly independently of each other--anyone know?).

They way I heard it Mouse was first with his Fred Flypogger and his other monster characters and Roth picked up on it and came up with Rat Fink and his Fink bunch. Prior to the those monster fink characters though, car clubs wanted personalized sweat shirts and artists would show up at car shows to do weird-oh drawings using an airbrush (the style was like what was in that Leave it to Beaver episode). Roth had the edge on Mouse in that he also built show cars to promote himself. Roth's Fink characters and show cars caught Revell's attention and the rest is history!

Lifted from Mouse's site:

MOUSE MEETS BIG DADDY

It was about 1960. I was at a hot rod show in Pittsburgh PA. The show had a lot of tasty hot rods in it ...not too glittery. It was the usual set-up for me. Had to staple up the pre-painted shirts on the back boards, wheel out the air compressor, plug in the air brushes, stack up the Mouse Studios catalogs and lay out the hill and country crash helmets.
A message came saying that Ed "Big Daddy" Roth the great shirt painter from Los Angles wanted to talk to me. Up walked this rather large, muscular guy with a beard, no shirt and a belly hanging out over his levis. He said, "Mouse, I know that you have the exclusive rights to painting shirts at this show and this is your territory but I'd like to set up and paint too. Besides, you would probably learn something, especiaIly how to make $300...not $100 at a car show."

I said, "Yes."

Roth set up next to me flashing his devilish grin. He sat on the tiniest stool that I have ever seen. The sight of his 250 pound Body with no shirt on and his large belly hanging over; painting sweatshirts with a tiny air brush left a lasting, indelible impression on me. He painted some great skulls with rattle snakes passing through the orifices. They were very well rendered and detailed air brush drawings but ... he was slow.

Meanwhile, I painted quickly and fully colored-in my drawings. I sped along. It was great fun. Big Daddy made his $300, just like he said he would ... I made a thousand dollars that day.

Roth took my catalog back to LA and showed it to his staff. They took my hot rod character "Freddie Flypogger," added rodent type ears, nose, and tail and called it, "Rat Fink." In one fell swoop, they took my character and stole my identity.

The Rat Fink character went on to bigger fame and fortune and I got ready for the next phase of my art; the great poster revolution.

Yes and no--I gotta figure that this item is a lot rarer than many movie posters, comic books, toys that would command higher prices. For all I know, it might be the only surviving documentation of some of those shirt designs.

Of course I can't afford it, and probably wouldn't buy it if I could. But a reasonably priced reprint?

Hi Everyone
This is my first post.I have a weirdohs monster toy that I got maybe in 1964 or 1963.It is Freddie Flameout and LeakyBoat Louie.it is just their heads side by side molded in a pink plastic and mounted on a wooden dowel that is painted a light pink.Below the faces it has the weird ohs logo and on the bottom it has hawk model company. On halloween after I got them  I carried them with me trick or treating.I have never seen them on ebay or on any other site.If I can get a good photo I will post it here.I gave the best descripton I could but they need to be seen in order to know what they really look like.

Morbidious,

I love the sculpt.  And noticed some of your other work in the background of the video.  Good stuff.

With Super-Sculpy...what kind of finish do you get with that (ceramic, plastic, something else)? Also, how durable is the piece afterwards?  Would it survive a drop to the floor?

Thanks.  Gaberax

Rat Fink, Flypogger, Nutty Mads, Weird-Ohs, Lindy Loonys...
I love all this stuff!  ;D

For the Weird-Ohs there was also a board game (http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/22437/the-weird-ohs-game) 7 (some kind of) hand held pinball game- forget the name they gave it...

I've also seen this squirt gun (http://www.go-boom.com/images/mr_fink_watergun.jpg)
under the Weird-Ohs/Nutty Mads on Ebay but carded I see it was made by Palmer Plastics...

MPC also put out a Nutty Maddish line (any info on how many characters were actually in this line would be great) but, here's a few-

& I get a kick out of these Jaymar puzzles from the era-

I have two what I believe are Marx "Wierd-O" trolls similar to this:

I don't like them very much.  I was forced to buy them to get another type of Marx troll I wanted.  Anyone here interested in these (trade or sale)?

Always considered this Marx Drincar to be a Weird-o/ Nutty Mad item! He sets on my nightstand under the lamp. Was a wonderful Craigslist find!   Buddy

Are those the DelRey editions that have been coming out of late? if so, those rock!! They used actual carbons off of REH's typewriter if the original manuscript wasn't available. You get pure, REH with no editorial interference.

Hep, LOVE those great old model kits! I wanna stick my nose in 'em and take a big long sniff of that ancient styrene! I have some vintage un- built Aurora monster long box and Big Daddy kits myself and once in a while i do just that. I also even bought a Mr Magoo Soaky that still had the soap in it so i could take a whiff sometimes...amazing how these old familiar scents can transport you right back to childhood...great stuff!

MDG, I am stunned at how similar our collecting habits are; Brother Rat Fink, Sling Rave Curvette, Nutty Mads, the POGO figures [they came with laundry soap, right?] and the Soupy button! That blue cup with the flashing eyes looks VERY FAMILIAR! I know i had it as a kid and used to drink out of it. Is it Captain Kangaroo??

Yeah, that's the captain. That cup and the two small Hot Wheels are the only things on that shelf that I actually had as a kid (my sister has one of the cups too.)

2. Cool guitar! When was it made?
I did the guitar, probably 7 or 8 years ago. My son bought it from a friend of his for something like $60--not sure why, we had about eight guitars in the house at that point. No brand markings on it at all and the body was covered with purple wall paint. I wanted to try my hand at customizing, so I took it apart, stripped off the paint, cleaned up the hardware and did it like you see here.

A real learning experience (did you know you're supposed to ground the pickups?) and not a great job overall (it plays like a plank), which is why there are no closeups. But it looks neat hanging over the door.

I had read this myself somewhere before and got to thinkin' about it ...so I got out my tracing paper and did this ...and it looks like the ol' STANLEY MOUSE may have a good point ...but what difference does it make? ...they both changed the world. I think it would make a great custom model. Make a FRED FLYPOGGER and make the ears, snout, "R.F.", and tail so they could hang back onto Fred Flypogger turning him into RAT FINK

Rat Fink's geneology is getting more complicated. Stanley Mouse apparently agrees that 'Monte' Monteverde was the original creator:
http://www.artinfo.com/news/story/37105/i-smell-a-rat-the-true-creator-of-lowbrow-arts-iconic-rat-fink-revealed/ (http://www.artinfo.com/news/story/37105/i-smell-a-rat-the-true-creator-of-lowbrow-arts-iconic-rat-fink-revealed/)

Monte's work is probabaly familiar to any of us that grew up in the 60s.

Does anyone know the facts about the smaller version Nutty Mad figures by Marx? Or are they even by Marx? On occasion I have spotted an E-bay auction where these smaller Nutty Mads are described as old and very rare (and thus, very valuable). My own belief is they are only a half step above the Mexican re-pops in value. Anyone able to fill in the facts on these?   Buddy

They were larger and squarer than typical magic slates, and came in pastel pink, green, and blue maybe? Not sure if was blue. Each was topped with a specific character..."Digger", "Drag Nut", etc., with the classic artwork. Been a looooong time since I've seen them!

Let's see. I had a Freddy Flameout notebook (three ring); also a Davy notebook. A few of the model kits and a couple of the Nutty Mad style plastic figures. Around the same period, I built up three Ed Roth kits (Surfink, Batfink, and Mr. Gasser). Mr. Gasser was my first one. I was also inspired to draw similar monstrosities. I called them "Goonies" (around 1964 - '65). I made some pocket change drawing them on classmates "blue Horse" notebooks.

Here's a snapshot of my "desktop" in the early '60's. Upon close inspection you can see a couple of Ed Roth kits, Surfink (missing a hand) and Mr. Gasser (on his side) and of course Big Frankie, the original Aurora Frankenstein, and the Remco Herman Munster. That's a jiggly gorilla under the lamp and a skull shaped candle next to it. Things became VERY cluttered in the following years, making this pic seem downright austere to me.

The first posters I had were the ones offered by NBC, promoting their new fall season. I guess it was fall of '65. So this photo must be from that summer. The posters were I Spy, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Get Smart (Jack Davis art), and Bonanza. Within the next three years, posters took over the entire room (a large basement room in a split level house). Some of these were the so-called "personality" posters, which were ubiquitous at the time. Most of them were B&W images from the history of Hollywood and were $1 apiece.  They were around 30 x 40 inches. I had a King King, a Laurel and Hardy, and a great one of Boris Karloff as Fu Manchu. Then the psychedelic posters took over.

Yes GAKENSTEIN, I'm afraid that's a stuffed little gator. Got it at The Alligator Farm in Florida on a vacation. It's freaky to recollect the shop with row after row of these stuffed critters. Some of them were in perverse poses; playing little bongos and wearing little clothes. I was very fond of the little gator, almost like a pet, except that it was...dead. On a side note, I visited The Alligator Farm many years later and was happy to see that it had evolved into a real conservatory. No stuffed gator shops in sight.
You nailed it, Inkfink! Very sharp eyes. That is a little carved tiki with faux ruby eyes. I think I got it on the same Florida trip that spawned the gator. And, yep, those are retro wikis for sure; The World Book Encyclopedia. I spent a lot of time with those growing up.
Also in the shot is the camera bag for my Kodak Instamatic. I don't remember when that transistor radio went "the way of all flesh"...
Here's the same corner a couple of years later. Good grief, why am I airing my madness?! Oh, I'm on the UMA site, that's why!  >:D

I cringe at the thumbtack holes in my *posters*!! LOL!!! I guess the worse thing I ever did was way back in 1974 I bought a Barry Smith Conan black light poster. My dad made a frame for it out of paneling, and staple gunned the poster to it!!! Ouch!!!

Speaking of thumbtack holes, or lack thereof, I bought a concert poster (for a show I had just attended) when I was around 16 yrs. old for $5. It was screen printed on heavy card stock. I stuck it to the wall of my room with "poster putty". About half the room was wood paneling, the other half was cement. Fortuitously, I used the putty to adhere it to the cement wall, so there were no pin holes in the piece. I sold it to a collector of concert posters last month for eighteen thousand dollars. It took him two years of haggling before I decided to let it go. I had mixed feeling about it, but now that it's all said and done, I'm glad to know the poster in in a great collection.

Hi Illoman. There were two shows that day (as mentioned on the poster). I was at the afternoon show. Actually The Soft Machine was pretty interesting. It seemed like "orchestrated noise" and I always kind of enjoyed the experimental stuff. The Amboy Dukes were energetic. At one point Ted jumped off the stage and just kept on playing. According to my calculations, he was just 19 years old at the time. Hendrix followed with a fairly subdued set. But, of course, all he had to do was stand there and play and I was electrified (as was the entire room). I head later that The Amboy Dukes didn't play the evening show. There was speculation that Ted and the boys had tried too hard to upstage Jimi and were bumped for that reason. I have no idea if that's true or not. In my mind no one could have upstaged the power trio of Jimi, Mitch and Noel.

Thanks. I saw Ted around 1979 with AC/DC opening. Loudest concert I ever heard. I had ear plugs and *still* had that after concert ear ringing for two days!! My friends were in the cheap seats and were breaking off cigarette filters and stuffing their ears with them! For Ted's encore I took the ear plugs out to hear Ted raw. It literally felt like someone was inside my chest, bating on my rib cage. I don't know how else to describe it.

I snuck my girl friend's camera in, and was able to get one shot of the Ted. Right after I snapped this shot all the security guys came rushing over to see who took it. (I used a flash.) I was too scared to take another one.

The way I remember it (and I was sober at this one!!) he saw the camera and made that face! It was awesome. I really wish I could have gotten more snaps but really didn't want to risk it.

At the end of his encore he hit a feedback note, and while the guitar hummed away he set it on a guitar stand and bowed down to it!! Great, great showmanship.

About 25 or so years ago I bought a whole display box of these Weird-Oh decals. There were six of each still sealed in the box.

I still have the box plus four of the sets somewhere.

Let me check to make sure I can locate them first. I think they're either in a box in the closet or under the bed. The box needs to be put on display in my tpy cabinet anyway of course.

I forgot I have a complete set of the original gum cards.  I would consider trading them, as there are only a few Weird-Ohs items that I really want.  I remember I got a good deal on the set and that's why I got it. Wish I still had that binder or one of those SPP vinyl cases/kits.

The best thing about this set released by Fleer in 1965 is actually the wrapper, although the cards themselves are pretty good:

The set sold well enough to spawn a sequel;

The Yeti was sculpted starting with a cardboard drawing I made.  Then tin foil and tape to build up the body. The face and hands were sculpted using Magicsculp (although I have developed an allergic reaction so strong to the stuff that even with gloves, a respirator and a fan blowing the fumes away from me....I am still effected.  With Magicsculp I fear I am done  :(.) The body was made with Crayola Model Magic.  He is fairly lightweight.  Two suction cups attached with fishing line keep him hanging in the back window. I had two earlier versions but this one was more along the lines of my vision.  When the light is just right he really stands out.  I am very happy with him.

I wonder why they would go so half-way by not including a simple decal sheet? Anything to mimimize expense of production and optimize profit. Morbidious,

I love the sculpt.  And noticed some of your other work in the background of the video.  Good stuff.

With Super-Sculpy...what kind of finish do you get with that (ceramic, plastic, something else)? Also, how durable is the piece afterwards?  Would it survive a drop to the floor?

Thanks.  Gaberax

(*at*) Gaberax,  Thanks!  with super sculpey, you can achieve a pretty good finish with the right baking and  sanding knowledge and experience. I've seen people achieve a very sheen like finish as well as anything else you could imagine.  I guess it boils down to just jumping in there and gaining the experience for yourself.  As for durability, alot of it depends on what you used for armature material, but as a general rule of thumb, supersculpey would most likely crack or break if dropped on the floor (depends on how big or heavy we are talking).  Some items may be more durable than others. This particular piece would most likely break off at the vulnerable points (ei: the horns, fingers, arms, ect...).

MPC also put out a Nutty Maddish line (any info on how many characters were actually in this line would be great) but, here's a few-

The Nutty Mads were issued by Marx and not Multiple Plastics Corporation.

Three series of Nutty Mads were issued:

Series 1:

Roddy the Hot Rod (racer)
Manny the Reckless Mariner
Waldo the Weightlifter
Rocco the Champ (boxer)
Dippy the Deep Diver (Scuba diver)
Donald the Demon (racer)

Series 2:

All-Heart Hogan (policeman)
Bull Pen Boo Boo (baseball pitcher)
Chief Lost Teepee (Native American)
End Zone (football player)
Suburban Sidney (tricyclist)
The Thinker (Rodin sculpture parody)

Series 3:

Smokey Sam (firefighter)
U.S. Male (mail carrier)
Gutterball Annie (bowler)
Hippo Crit (physician)
Mudder (homemaker)
Now! Children (school teacher)

Marx then issued a series of six of the Hawk Weird-Ohs:

Drag Hag
Daddy
Endsville Eddie
Freddy Flameout
Davey
Digger

:)

Evidently Hawk planned to launch a second series of Weird-Ohs kits which was to include a hockey player named Freddie Faceoff but the craze for the Weird-Ohs line did not last much beyond a year and the plans for additional kits were therefore cancelled.

Interesting! That's four different binders confirmed. Curseofthewerewolf reports that he had a Freddie Flameout one and RPM says he has one with Drag Hag and Leaky Boat Louie on the front and Francis the Foul and Endsville Eddie on the back. Then there's the Digger one pictured in the ad:

I wonder how many different Weird-Ohs binders were issued by Standard Plastics Products?

That'd be cool alright, but I doubt that those binders would last very long with dozens of heavy card sheets in them without starting to come apart. I don't think those binders are very sturdy.

Here are three other unused Pactra Paint Sets I have though:

Love the old pactra bottles, sure I have a few dryed up ones that date back to the early 70s with me. Love that Funny Car packaged one almost as much as the weird ohs!

I agree. The Pactra bottles were quite a bit nicer than the more common Testor's paint bottles, and light years nicer than the little cans in which the Humbol paint was sold.

Here's a good picture of the Weird-Oh Paint Set from Ebay:

so do you have everything weird-ohs now? seems like you gotta be getting close
Title: Re: Weird-Ohs Items!

Not that close. I need the Daddy Magic Slate. I don't have any of the SPP binders.

Nor do I have any of the Marx figures although these are a lower priority. I was never previously into figures but the MPC Pop-Tops and various Marx figures now call to me strongly. For this I blame you other fellows for infecting me with your enthusiasm.

 ;)

And related to the Weird-Ohs I still need a Totally Fab! Frantic model kit (original only of course).

 :)

Are the paints still in liquid form?

No. I see no hint of liquid movement within the paint bottles when I turn this Pactra set, or any of my other three vintage ones, around and about. The paint appears to have congealed inside the bottle. I suppose I could do a better check by opening the box and then a few of the paint jars, but I'm not going to do that.

I have a few small jars of vintage Testors Big Daddy Roth paint and the paint pigment has separated out from the thinner in those. I suppose they could be mixed together again with a brush but I'm going to leave those little bottles unopened.

Nah, why bother it's original state, so many nice new paints to use if your gonna build something...heck you could bring one to a paint shop and have them match the colors! That would be something to have a Wierd-Oh kit built in original colors!

I suspect that the Crazy Cool colors in the Weird-Ohs set were all pretty standard Pactra colors anyway, just renamed.

Wow! I follow this realm of 60s stuff pretty close. How did I miss these coming out in 2008?! Don't recall mention of the vinyl, carded figures anywhere. These are full-color, smaller versions of all the Weird-Ohs, Surfing characters and the Beatle-esque singing group. Most are pretty close facimilies. I saw these at Ollies for the first time this week. (08-13) They are at a sell-out price of $1.58 each! I didn't look hard enough to see any model kits. Here's a link showing the figures:

http://www.amazon.com/Weird-ohs-Endsville-Eddie-Skate-Board/dp/B005VQYGFS/ref=sr_1_6?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1378238550&sr=1-6&keywords=%22weird-ohs%22 (http://www.amazon.com/Weird-ohs-Endsville-Eddie-Skate-Board/dp/B005VQYGFS/ref=sr_1_6?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1378238550&sr=1-6&keywords=%22weird-ohs%22)

Presumably there was a large reissue of the models of late. They are well listed at AMAZON. :

Aw!  Then the chronology would be ....Big Daddy Finks, Hawk Weird-ohs, Marx Nutty Mads. Got it!

It's interesting that the sculpts of the subsequent Marx Weird-Ohs figures were far superior to the sculpts of the actual Hawk models. It's ironic but the Marx figures are much more faithful reproductions of the box art of the Hawk kits than are the Hawk models.

Here's the Hawk Digger kit box art:

It is. These Ray Gaedke paintings were being auctioned by Hake's in 2014-

Here's one: click (https://www.hakes.com/Auction/ItemDetail/90739/LINDBERG-LINDY-LOONYS-ROAD-HOG-ORIGINAL-MODEL-KIT-BOX-LID-ART)

Some interesting and useful information regarding the scarcity of the original Hawk Weird-Ohs kits can be gleaned from this book published in 1996 by noted board game enthusiast and collector Rick Polizzi:

The book contains the following estimate of prices for boxed Hawk Weird-Ohs kits:

Weirdsville Customizing Set $500
Killer McBash $135
Leaky Boat Louie $100
Daddy $80
Davey $80
Digger $80
Drag Hag $75
Francis the Foul $65
Freddie Flameout $65
Endsville Eddy $60
Huey's Hut Rod $55
Sling Rave Curvette $30
Wade A. Minit $30

Now we can argue from now until the cows come home about a current price list let alone one from 1996, but the fact is that Polizzi's estimates provide a very decent ranking of the relative scarcities of these kits. Quite simply, I'm in general agreement with Polizzi's assessment and I've been collecting these and other select model kits since 1982-83.

Rick Polizzi's book also contains the following estimate of prices for boxed Hawk Frantic and Silly Surfer kits:

Bopped out Steel Pluckers Havin' a Bash $85
Frantic Banana Punishing the Skins $85
Totally Fab $85
Frantic Cats $75

Woodie on a Surfari $80
Hodad Makin' the Scene with a Six-Pack $75
Beach Bunny Catchin' Rays $70
Hot Dogger and Surf Bunny Riding Tandem $65
Hot Dogger Hangin' Ten $65

Here are pics of some of these kits:

Here are a couple of good pictures of the Hawk Weirdsville Customizing Set which includes complete Davey, Digger and Leaky Boat Louie model kits:

When I first started collecting model kits some 35 years ago, I wasn't interested in getting this set because of the element of duplication.

 :o

But I am now of course! Mint-in-box specimens are really tough to find though.

These kits are from Multiple Products, I saw them at Ollie's too, re-issues from the 60's kits, originals are scarce.

To my knowledge Multiple Products didn't issue any model kits.

Are you referring to Model Plastics Corporation (MPC)?

No, they were in fact from Multiple. Originally they were branded as Ripley's Believe it or Not! kits, and they depict torture instruments displayed in their various "Odditoriums."

I keep marveling at how well the sculpts of the Marx Weird-Ohs conform to the Hawk Weird-Ohs box art drawn by Bill Campbell:
