Title: The last thing you spent money on
Post by: BlackLagoon on September 11, 2010, 08:25:58 PM
Be it a really cool monster collectible or something that put a smile on your face.....or something that totally sucked, like auto insurance, grocery or socks...what was the last thing you spent your hard earned dough on?

I'll start--I just bought a new copy of the awesome KISS import "Killers".

Spent money on two-part urethane foam and related supplies, plus my first airbrush and compressor.  I'm foaming and restoring some old masks. I'm still very new to it and learning the ropes.

a large wolfman figure that was reduced at TRU cause the box was trashed. got it for 10 bucks!  I think these retail  for 40.  i can repair the box, but I plan to put the figure in a display case, so why bother. if you see damaged merchandise at TRU and ask a Mgr. they will most likely mark it down for you just to move it.

Went to a barn sale yesterday where you could fill a bag for two bucks, so for $4 I got: two big and one tiny plastic jack o'lanterns, a life-size styrofoam santa face, two different 45rpm record holders with neat-o teen graphics, an old, but usable, thermos, a glass cocktail shaker, ST:TNG Companion book (gift for a friend), a 10"  Bing Crosby xmas record, the Mitch Miller xmas album, four 60s spy-related albums (incl. the Goldfinger soundtrack), a Les Baxter 2-record set, a couple other albums with neat covers, and some other toys and books that my son threw in.

I'd love to see a pic of these, or even one of them. Are they metal or plastic?

A hard plastic. I had them as a kid, they're very lifelike (though the Iguanadon is standing upright in the retro style!) and they are all to scale. I'll post some pics when they arrive.  ;)

;D Halloween  ;D  Bought a new webgun (which requires an air compressor) but also, I'm adding walls to the cemetery this year and want to texture them, painting them, as well as I'm planning on building my 1st pneumatic prop. Another I'd like to do, which rounds out the little maze is the pinacle, but cost prohibitive this year, so it will be manually driven  ;D

Wow!  Your little boy is gonna be doing cartwheels across the yard this year!  Sounds like you have a plan! I cannot wait to see the Halloween Haunt photos. Everyone in the UMA is so artistic and imaginative, I hope people put stuff up early so that I can get inspired. I missed ALL Halloween night last year, although my daughter claims they propped me up to see the TOTs. I can't remember any of the details. This year:  NO spinal sugery!!!!  So I am in it for the long haul- Already making pvc zombies. I never ever ever want to miss Halloween again, or as we call it "The Show".  haha

Seems like it.......... Ripped out the NASTIEST 25 year old wall-to-wall carpeting in existence to get to bare floor. And disgustingly enough, somebody has taken about half of that discarded carpeting off of my front lawn (after it's been rained on repeatedly mind you)and carried it away presumably to install it in their own abode.

Blech.

I did that when I laid down my wood floors. I had to wear a mask and seal the room off with plastic due to all the decades old dust.

Yep,try tearing up 1000 sq of Berber carpeting that had 10 years of various animal piss that was so bad it literally melted the old padding to the floor and you had to scrape it up,paint the floor to look like carpeting and do a double seal coat.. YES,the joys of owning a home that the home inspector probably sat inside ate chips and watched TV. I have so much NOT to code stuff it's crazy and $$$ to fix, OH but the inspector said it was OKEE DOKE.  u6juu

Tell ya what you rug ripper uppers shoulda spent money on.....a Panther machine!

I ripped up an entire building of dorm rooms in a day with that bad boy. Looks like a minature Bobcat, has one caster wheel in the front, and 2 large wheels in the rear. There are handles on each side of your seat to control the wheels and a joystick in between your legs to raise and drop the hydraulic blade in the front--there are also a stack of weights under your legs.

This thing is heavy..I mean its gotta be close to a ton. You put that blade down, get some bite under the rug and push those sticks forward.....everything goes. I tore up carpet, tile, lineolium, thin layers of concrete---and destroyed a bathroom doorway and door with it  ;D

Which is probably why they say "commercial use only"--I misread, I thought it said "comical".

Anyway, back on topic last thing I spent coin on--the thing that drives me nuts: Auto insurance, what a friggin racket!!

It's basically a hand held bazooka, which is constructed to shoot a ball of air. They are very cool especially when you use it on someone secretly! It's like getting hit by a Ghost, or having a Ghost fly by ya! I'm thinking of making a little cage for in front to hold dry ice...

It's basically a hand held bazooka, which is constructed to shoot a ball of air. They are very cool especially when you use it on someone secretly! It's like getting hit by a Ghost, or having a Ghost fly by ya! I'm thinking of making a little cage for in front to hold dry ice...

I am so beat, I can't begin to describe it. I've been fighting rain since September, after after a weekend of drizzle, we've two days of High Winds and warmer temps, then MORE rain! Ugh!

To answer your question, the wife said that little man needs a Frankenstein Monster in the display, so I needed framework for that, and I've still two wolf men to build!

I saw ZH's note about it, but need to go back and see if there is video on it.

It willl look great next to the Karloff Frank window cling on our front door. I do wish it was Chaney, but haven't been able to find any other classic monster since I stumbled upon Frank last year.

It didn't. I've been digging into our savings. But it had to be done. Having the entire A/C unit crap the bed a week after we closed busted our budget BIG time.

But the place looks pretty good.......I love it!

Bravo! BaronLatos, I just can't seem to muster up the energy to get out there and look around for bargains! I did order some stuff online, just to delight myself next year. But for some reason, this Halloween almost drained us physically. My husband and I worked like fiends to bring everything in on Sunday night and we woke up with sore muscles!  That has never happened before -I guess it was the whole 2 day marathon of TOTers. We had over 200 total. I bought that Martha Stewart Pumpkin Clock I've always admired online- it was pretty cheap  :)

It was truly providential, I had seen the caracature magazine once before, and it went for far, far higher than I could afford.  The second one was a real treasure...the article is on Barry Brown's site about "Unsung Heroes of Horror".  Our friend THE DRUNKEN SEVERED HEAD has a scan of the portrait.

Last night i found a couple of cheap WATCHMEN DVDS for sale at the Video Store, the first was 'Tales Of The Black Freighter' an animated horror story, genuinely creepy, with it was a featurette and a 1970's news piece about the memoirs of the original Night Owl.

Second was a two disk set 'WATCHMEN : The Motion Comic' , 12 chapters containing everything in the Graphic Novel with sound, music, and some computer generated motion.

I would say it was worth $4.00 for all of that. ;D

Christmas beer supply - two crates of lager, bottle of Bourbon, bottle of Scotch, one bottle of Bailieys, four bottles of wine, two white two red and a bottle of mulled wine. Somehow beer tastes better at Christmas and the hangover's don't matter.

Sounds like a hell of a party at your place kong!

It will hopefully be drank over the next few weeks!
I will also be making some Mars Bar Vodka - take one bottle of good Vodka i.e Smirnoff, empty contents into a container then slice up half a dozen or so Mars Bars (depending on how thick you want it) then pour the Vodka back in and run the bottle under a hot tap or place it in a bucket of hot water until the chocolate bars melt, then leave it in the fridge for a couple of days and you have a delicious Mars Bar Liqueur!

Fantasia/ Fantasia 2000        OG- What are you doing with all those fuses?

They are fuses for replacing blown ones in some electronics. One was for a Fog machine that stopped working on Halloween night, and the other is for a unit that you plug lights into, and an MP3 player to make the lights dance in the yard. Had too many amps being drawn on the first night. Fog machine is still a mystery. Amazing, these fuses are uncommon so I had to go to specialty stores to get them.

Right.........because naturally the gas would come AFTER the burrito rather than before. You have the order all wrong.

A stack of books and other things from our Border's that is closing...I will miss hanging out there but with some books 50-70% off, I got my summer reading loaded up:

- Team Of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln Doris Kearns Goodwin

- Discourse on the Method Rene' Descartes

- Wine and War: The French, The Nazis and the Battle for France's Greatest Treasure Donald and Petie Kladstrup

- A Moveable Feast Ernest Hemingway

- The American (previously A Very Private Gentleman) Martin Booth

A couple of Moleskin noteboks for me, a couple books and some stationary for my wife and a couple books for my daughter

I am currently reading Donnie Brasco by Joseph Pistone. A great read so far.

Amazon was having a really good sale on TV show dvds and I got everything above for 250 bucks!

Finally made it over to a rare book store near me that I've been meaning to check out. There were quite a few books there that I would have loved to take home but I can't be spending hundreds or thousands of dollars for a single book right now, but I did manage to find a reasonably priced copy of "Round The Fire Stories" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, from 1902. It is a collection of exclusively horror stories. Pretty good score for me.

Amazon can have some killer sales from time to time and when they do I usually pick a few things up incredibly cheap.
Good score.

Ooooooooh  Hepcat!  That sounds fantastic!  When's the big trip and have you ever done this before?

This Friday and I've done it too many times to count.

Doesn't the train get wet?

No. It's 80 miles of mostly farmland between the western edge of Lake Ontario and London.

I am of couse talking about London, Ontario, a city 120 miles SW of Toronto with a population of 355,000 known for these things among others:

1. Where Frederick Banting invented insulin.

2. Guy Lombardo's hometown.

3. The birthplace of Eric Lindros.

4. Home of Labatt Breweries, brewers of 50 Ale and Blue.

5. Original locale of Carling Breweries, brewers of Red Cap Ale and Black Label Beer.

6. Home of Canada Trust, now TD Canada Trust and Canada's next to largest bank.

7. Home of the London Life Insurance Company, now unfortunately part of Great West Life.

8. Site of the University of Western Ontario and its perennial powerhouse Mustangs football team. Not only is Western one of the very largest universities in Canada, its business school is consistently ranked among the very best in North America and its hospital was the site of the first artificial heart transplant in the world.

9. Home of O-Pee-Chee, distributor of Topps cards in Canada and originator of the hockey cards that were sold under the Topps imprint for many decades.

10. Site of Canada's fourth busiest passenger train station.

 ;)

Oh I know, driving is no fun at all!  I'm usually the driver on most trips because my husband has computer stuff to do and he is always drowsy in the car.  I even have a couple cds I always play on the start of the trip to wake up, and then I'm good to go. But, man oh man, I would love to just sit in my seat and kick back and watch the scenery roll on by    :)    I have to have a train trip on my to do list!

"Simulacron-3" by Daniel F. Galouye (1964)
a book I've always wanted to read-
but it's been a hard one to find - & quite pricey if you did...

(this is the book the movie "the Thirteenth Floor" (1999) is based on
as well as the 1973 German made for TV miniseries World On A Wire (http://"http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/la-ca-indie-focus-20110814,0,6761744.story") )

Finally, Phoenix Pick  re-released it in June.

Heating element for our dryer.

Spent all day Saturday replacing the old one. Of course our dryer only had front access meaning I had to take apart the whole dryer, not just the back.

;D  that seriously cracked me up. .  and something I would probably do, if I ever would actually donate anything.  ( I tend to keep everything . . blank stare . . Its a sickness. I cant help it  ::)  )

and as far as the last thing I spent money on..
oh what a day...

more boxes ( yes more. more than the last 60 , I have bought in the last 48 hrs. NOT kidding. wish i was . . sigh. .   )

more tape

scheduled a storage unit ( which they charged me like instantly of course )

reserved a moving truck ( charged me too )

then I went to check my mail at my post office box. . oh guess what?  THAT was due too !!!!! ughhhh..  yet MOREEE outgoing cash,
and what was sad ? Not even one dang birthday card in there. just BILLS !!!!! * cries. .

all of that depressing expenditures required an immediate "pick me up", hence a giant double double protein style burger,  from In & Out  :)
out of the uh,,.... ****clears throat and can barely utter the words****, 1500 [plus] dollars spent in the last 4 hours, the burger was the best 4 bux spent.
Thats for sure

now im home, just got out of a much needed bubble bath and will resume the evening being lazy. I deserve it !!  who feels like putting together moving boxes
after the day Ive had??/ Not I !!   bleh!

A contraption for the pool made with glorified bungee cords that hook to your ankles to allow you swim in place.

seriously??/   lol
that sounds very interesting . I must see this.

I just bought MORE tape. . [for putting boxes together.]
I am soooo sick of putting boxes together. . it is Boringgg.. takes longer to put a box together
than it does to fill it up.  ughhhh...

getting ready go to buy my daughter shoes.
the little darling informed me last night, *via text, cuz she is gone right now **
that her feet grew over the last week and none of her shoes fit.
I was like, . " well can you stop growing please, at least till you come home & its easier for me to take you shopping & remedy these sorts of things   )
seriously though- how does that happen? I dont like that. How theyre little one minute,
and before you know it, theyre taller than you and another year closer to moving out .
Makes mommy sad.    .   . sigh. :(

"before you know it, theyre taller than you."
That shouldn't be long ::)

One thing I don't miss: buying clothes for constantly growing kids.  My kids both ended up taller than my wife (no big thing--she hit 5 feet when she was 30. Daughter is 5'7"--Son is almost 6'.   But they are off on their own--and they never call and they never write--after all we did for them . . . ::)

Now where was I?
Last thing I spent money on?

I know, LOL. I met a artist who used to work on the Secret of the NIMH movie, he is a teacher that works at the art college that I go to. Still, I don't have him as a teacher... That would be awesome...

Good thing I'm still in art college right so I can meet more artists, but he's petty much quiet guy, just sitting and drawing whatever he's doing while his students work on their own animation project.

$15 of happiness... We didn't know that replacement shower heads were soooo cheap! For 12 years we have been suffering with a contractor grade cheapo shower head (is that one word?), anyway, we bought a new one and it was easy to install (according to my spouse), and NOW I feel clean for the first time in years!! Our trickling shower head often left me with shampoo still in my hair, due to lack of rinsing pressure!! Ahhhhh! I'm so happy  :)  :) And I KNOW I am gonna have a better outlook on life!
Now we need to buy 2 more for the other showers!!  Yay!! I'm claen and I want to shout it to the World!!

and Charp, the showerhead thing cracked me up.. kinda stinks that you couldnt have discovered that little factoid like YEARS ago,
so you wouldnt have to go around with shampoo in your hair and whatnot . Bleh!
well, congratulations on being clean and happy !! :)

Yes Fester, if you notice .. I'm picking up 'Weight Control' IAMs in the blue bag and not the regular IAMs in the orange bag.

Btw ~ In n Out Burger is now as far East as Texas.

I like their T-shirts (Isn't this the In n Out Burger Appreciation thread?) ..  http://shop.in-n-out.com/Collector-Shirts/3003/dept (http://shop.in-n-out.com/Collector-Shirts/3003/dept)

Yep, I noticed that.
We are a blue bag family too.
The dogs are losing weight.
Me? Not so much.
Maybe if I left off the sausage gravy . . .

"Btw ~ In n Out Burger is now as far East as Texas."
That would almost make me agree to move to Texas.

Wow..those are really affordable hamburgers! Now I want one, too  :)  I can't speak for the Dog IAMS, but the Cat IAMS tastes awful (according to Mad Caddie) he will only eat Fancy-Pants Feast...and hamburgers. funny enough...
I just bought lunch AGAIN, at In & Out... hahahha
girls and I woke up late ( we all slept in till like 3 in the afternoon ),
said " we are hungry "..
and the lil one  , Violet , .said " can we go to In & Out ? "
I said " againnnn? " and they both said , "Everyday is a good day to go to In & Out !!!"
( it was very commercial-like ),
but I have to say I agree with them, which is why Im sitting here , eating my animal style fries,
amused that this thread has gone on this long just with In & Out comments alone... lol

btw. little factoid. In & Out doesnt have commercials.
its sooooo good, that they dont need to advertise, at all.
word of mouth is good enough.
cool. huh?

This is my usual order : double double - protein style ( no bread ) . and animal fries. . ( covered in cheese & thousand island )

mars- You are so right with your expression of pain!  ouch....indeed. I used to zip back and forth to Milwaukee when my daughter was in dental school, and on Midwest Airlines it cost about $200 roundtrip, which was about the same price it would cost me to drive. It was awesome to fly up there in a couple hours in luxury, AND they gave you chocolate chip cookies! NOW....it would cost significantly more, because Midwest is gone and Delta is way more expensive. We flew to South Dakota last year, and it cost us $700 each! errrgh!

Ended up going to WizardWorld Comic Con St. Louis ($55 a ticket), wasn't really planning on it but a friend ended up asking me so I said, "What the hell?!".

The reason I wasn't really planning on going was because I'm not into autographs and I'm certainly not going to pay $25+ for one!  Did get to see some from afar though; Henry Winkler, Billie D. Williams, Lou Ferigno, Malfoy, Andrea from Walking Dead and a few others.

I ended up finding DST's retro Bride for $15 so I bought that for Sam....so had to find something for Jo!  Well I find a Lily Munster shirt, which of course Sam loves her too, so I got them both Lily shirts to wear as pajamas and will set the Bride a side for Christmas.  I was originally going to sneak the Bride into my collection but Sam loves her to much!

As a door gift they were giving away reprints of Walking Dead #1 and most dealers would instantly buy or trade for $15, I opted to keep mine!  Apparently they'll do a different variant cover for each Comic Con (8 total I believe) so there will be lots of folks looking for all the variant covers!

I went to three stores that were totally out of it .. Dumb looks when I asked why. I then went to the 4th store (the first place that the 'Other' went to) and the shelves were bare there too but there were workers stocking shelves and a nice woman went into the back and found that there were two left .. I thanked her and bought one.  :D

Long Live the Queen!  Bella Rules!
Speaking of empires & kingdoms & such-  I got a new ottoman this weekend! Woohoooo! Replacing iron coffee table after my husband fell off a ladder and broke his knee on the corner of the table....and after everyone in my family has maligned the table and called it "death table" because they can't navigate around it properly.  Anyways, I'm letting it retire in Florida at my sister's house. But my faux leather ottoman is pretty cool-  and it was cheap- from Ross!

Its the day after Thanksgiving and the wifey and I are making lunch and our refrigerator (built apparently in 1997) starts making funny noises and we pull the lettuce out of the crisper and its frozen nearly solid.

"I guess it's time for a new fridge." Says she.

"On black Friday??!!" Says I, holding the frozen lettuce in my hand.  "Ok."

So we head out, on the way to the nearby Home Depot I'm yammering on how I'll go as high as $500 and she's laughing at me reminding me it's not 1997 any more-- we wait for some help and with specific measurements (and I get her to agree on a cool BLACK fridge) I walk out of there after paying $513!  WOOOO!

Saturday, we received a 7-pack of 12tb drives and late last night, I put 6 of them in a RAID5 start-up to format them.   I'll be home after lunch and that should be done, then I'll pull one and replace it with the 7th and format that one, then start a long, long copy job to fill about 30% of the disk-pack.  Then pull one and replace it with the original "pulled-but-formatted drive" and let a rebuild occur.  I'll time all of those and compare to our 8tb RAID5's.

The 12tb's are still a POOR value at a 75% price increase over the 8's (50% more capacity, 75% more cost - NOT a good value).  But our wholesaler made the best offer and this is good enough for testing purposes.

I'd much rather spend money on 100% gains in capacity than these measly baby-step gains.  I don't see why they don't make me the 24tb drives at $139.  I've been asking for that for a couple of years - what are they waiting for?!!  They could sell TONS of those (and just to me, too).  With 6-drive RAID5's  (about 120tb of total capacity but only about 70-80tb efficiently usable, I could keep our five RAID towers then, and load on quite a few more DVD file-sets.  Boy... that's gonna take a LOT of menu-building, though!  Oh well - that's why God invented child programmers!

I finally received something I've been looking for on and off for 40yrs:
A replica 16th Century: German Zweihander (2-handed sword) with a Flamberge blade (Flame Blade).
After watching the Fearless Vampire Killers and seeing this Great Sword in Count von Krolock's Castle, I had to search for one...and here it is (It's truly awe inspiring weighing in at almost 8 lbs with a length over 63":

Sadly, 3 animal cage-traps so we can snag a possum, and two feral cats that hang around.  The cats will be given to our no-kill animal shelter although these are wild cats that I'd be surprised if they'd ever tolerate human company.  We just don't want KITTIES to be sprouting around...

And the possum, once captured (IF), will be taken down-river and released.  The food supply will be more plentiful, fresh and with far less city-street traffic around.

'Tis the time of year for rabies and fleas and ticks, and we don't want those wild critters around the park pets.
